“I’VE BEEN PUTTING IN THE WORK, I’M A REBEL WITH A CAUSE” – STORMZY

P R E S E N T S

S T O R M Z Y AT THIS YEARS GIBRALTAR CALLING By Anna Gerlach

This year, Great Britain Grime legend STORMZY will headline Gibraltar’s biggest summer festival combining music, sunshine and the sea with some of the largest dance and pop musicians on this planet. MTV Presents: Gibraltar Calling continues MTV’s long history of media partnering with tourist boards and councils in order to promote cities and regions to youth audiences. Besides other huge International line ups such as Two Door Cinema Club, Rita Ora and Scouting For Girls, STORMZY is set to rock the house after gaining two Brit Awards this year for the categories "Best British Male Solo Artist," and "British Album of the Year."

T

he Hip Hop, Grime and Contemporary R&B rapper has defied all expectations, not only of what a Grime artist can achieve, but of what a completely independent artist from the streets of South London can accomplish. After just two years in the business, STORMZY celebrated great success earlier this year as the headliner at London’s WIRELESS festival, with a sell-out audience of 45,000. However, his career was not planned out right from the beginning. Back at school he was actually meant to go to Oxford University: "I got the best grades at A-level, and the owner of my school was a governor at Oxford. He wanted me to go and it looked like it was going to happen. My mum thought I was going, my friends thought I was going. Then I started making videos and going on YouTube…" Another example of how the internet helps the younger generation full of creatives to gain more awareness and catapults them right to the top. Since releasing his debut EP, Dreamers Disease in 2014, the 22 year old artist has scooped up two MOBOs, toured the world, won "Best International Artist" at the BET Awards, performed on Jools Holland, become the first unsigned rapper to feature on the BBC Sounds of… list and sold almost a million records. So, how did he go from sitting in school to playing in some of the biggest venues from Camden to Japan in just 8 months? "As a kid, my mum used to play Ghanaian hiplife, gospel and afrobeats," he said, "My sister used to play proper R&B slow jams, and that shaped my tastes quite a bit. They made me appreciate soulful sounds and songwriting. But the main music effect on me was external." While most kids in the UK spend their spare time playing football in the streets, STORMZY was clashing: "There was a place called Rap Academy in my area. They had decks and there would be instrumentals playing all the time, and I'd just hog the mic all night and spit. I remember once, three guys walked in, and they were way older than us. I decided to clash them, and it turned into three versus one." At this point, music seemed to only be a hobby he used to enjoy with his friends. He was a one man band, taking care of his own promotion and bookings. Once he turned 20, he decided to make the leap and

take his music to the next level. In 2013, he launched a YouTube freestyle series titled "Wicked Skengman." His debut EP, "Dreamers Disease," soon followed in 2014, showcasing how diverse his style actually is, with tracks like melancholic R&B hit "Forever" and "Jupa," an upbeat afrobeat song. The EP also contained "Stormtrooper", one of his most conscious tracks, talking about the sad reality of domestic violence: "I wanted to show I could do big R&B records, big afrobeat records, and deep ones too," he explains. "I wanted to get all those sounds out of me, and show I'm not just grime."

"AS A KID, MY MUM USED

GHANAIAN HIPLIFE, GOSPEL AND AFROBEATS."

TO PLAY

Exclusively through Grime, the British musician has been aiming to draw more attention to emotions, the soul and the deeper meanings behind the lyrics. "As a human, I feel a lot of different emotions. Yeah, I want to

make a record that my mandem can play in the car and get gassed to. But I also want to make a record for the quieter times, when you're alone with your thoughts. To make a record like that, you need different sounds and styles. Sometimes I'm pissed off, and it will come via Grime. But sometimes I feel loving, and it will come out a different way." What STORMZY has achieved so far is truly incredible and was only possible with his focussed passion for music and the motivation to make a difference, as he says: "Just make your mark and step in the game."

STORMZY will headline MTV Presents Gibraltar Calling on Saturday 22nd September 2018. Tickets can be purchased online at: http://www.gibraltarcalling.com @MTVPRESENTSGIBRALTARCALLING

Ellie Goulding is getting married!n A

On 7th August, The Times newspaper was the lucky publication to reveal the happy couple’s big news: “The engagement is announced between Caspar, son of the Hon. Nicholas Jopling of Yorkshire and Mrs. Jayne Warde-Aldam of Yorkshire, and Elena, daughter of Mr. Arthur Goulding of Herefordshire and Mrs. Tracey Sumner of West Midlands." Three days later, Ellie posted this lovely image of her and Caspar - who btw is an art dealer, currently working for New York based Sotheby’s - on her Instagram, alongside some heart-warming words to her fans: "I tend to keep my life very private these days and I have enjoyed the time I’ve had away from all the madness. But we’ve had so many beautiful messages of support and love the past few days, as have our families, that we wanted to say thank you so much! We appreciate it more than you could ever know. You’re the most wonderful person I’ve ever known, and I can’t wait to be your very giggly, in awe and loved up wife x." Yes, we absolutely love this wave of love, peace and harmony that’s been coming up from the celeb world… Congratulations to the gorgeous couple!

Celebrity FLASH O

n the opposite side of the Mediterranean ocean Madonna celebrated the end of her glorious 50s in the magical town of Marrakesh, with a stunning photo shoot with photographer Hassan Hajjaj. Dressed like a Moroccan goddess, the superstar nailed it with her mystical walk through the desert, accompanied by numerous dressed-up horses and equestrians with large burning torches following her. Although it was Madonna’s birthday bash, she gave a present to her fans when she released the video of her ground-breaking performance at this year’s Met Gala, on her YouTube channel. The theme was "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination." The breath-taking intro shows Madonna emerging from the hood of her robe, surrounded by Gregorian monks. Then, suddenly, she begins to sing the lyrics

HAPPY 60TH BDAY, MADONNA! of - come on, what other song did you expect? - "Like a Prayer," of course! What follows is her switch to a more Joan of Arc look, whilst performing "Beautiful Game," and her version of Leonard Cohen’s "Hallelujah." On Instagram, she promoted the unveiling of the video with a big "Thank you" to all her fans: "In celebration of my birthday, and as a “thank you” for all your donations to my Birthday Fundraiser, I wanted to share a very special performance from this year’s Met Gala. Check out on my YouTube page and enjoy the entire performance!" It’s undeniable: For 60 years old, the stunning pop icon still knows how to rock a show - besides looking like a young 40! Happy Birthday to one of our favourite idols of all time, Madonna!

ctually, who isn’t getting engaged and/or married this year? After Justin Bieber, Kaley Cuoco, Leona Lewis and Karlie Kloss, British singer/ songwriter Ellie Goulding and her partner of 18 months, Caspar Jopling have just announced their engagement in a very traditional, but certainly beautiful way!

JANET JACKSON

IS

BACK

A

fter three full years of not hearing anything from the R&B, rock and pop diva, Janet Jackson has now finally celebrated her comeback with the video for her new track "Made For Now," featuring "Despacito" rapper Daddy Yankee. The song reflects the perfect summer jam to breathe in the last rays of September sunshine. In the vibrant music video, Jackson and Yankee dance through the streets of New York, celebrating an epic block party with global representation.

With a throwback to Janet’s glorious performances from the 80s and 90s, she impresses us again with killer choreography! The video was directed by Dave Myers, who has worked with Janet in the past, alongside other stars, such as Ariana Grande, Kendrick Lamar and Kelly Clarkson. So, if you are relaxing by the pool or in the spa at this very moment, plug in your headphones and check out Janet Jackson’s "Made for Now" on YouTube. Expect a never-ending summer vibe you will be listening to over and over again!

Rest in Peace, Aretha Franklin

ith over 75 million records sold, 18 Grammy awards and 77 entries into the US Billboard Hot 100, Aretha Franklin gave the world her heart and soul with her incredible voice and inspirational talent. Now, at the young age of 76, the queen of soul tragically passed away due to advanced pancreatic cancer. After first being diagnosed with the tumour back in 2010 and undergoing surgery, she still performed on the stage. She retired from show business in 2017, but still had two big shows planned in New Orleans and at the Heritage Fest in April earlier this year. However, both had to be cancelled on her doctor’s orders. Her last album "A Brand New Me" was also released in November 2017. Her family stated: “In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her

children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds.” Elton John, Donald Trump, Barack and Michelle Obama and many other famous figures have stated their respect for the superstar. Bill and Hillary Clinton, at whose 1993 inauguration gala Franklin performed, said in a joint statement: “She will forever be the Queen of Soul and so much more to all who knew her personally and through her music. Our hearts go out to her family and her countless fans.” In a separate tweet, Hillary wrote: “Mourning the loss today of Aretha Franklin who shared her spirit and talent with the world. She deserves not only our RESPECT but also our lasting gratitude for opening our eyes, ears and hearts. Rest in eternal peace, my friend.” We at SOCIETY will never forget Aretha’s soulful voice, nor her candour and passion for music! R.I.P. Aretha Franklin.

TYPICAL PARIS... W

hen Paris Hilton plans a wedding, it is sure to be absolutely epic! Oh wow, but excuse me, because Paris is not planning just one, but three weddings due to the simple ‘first world’ problem of having too many friends. Unfortunately, for the lucky invitees, an insider told Page Six that Paris

needs more time to plan, so is pushing all the weddings back to 2019. The specific locations are still to-beconfirmed, but in the running are some of the most exclusive resorts in Ibiza, Bora Bora, Fiji, Hawaii and Mexico. With her 20-carat $2 million diamond ring, she’s already set the vibe for what could be the most expensive wedding in the history of celebrity events!

DEMI LOVATO

"Sex is natural. Love is necessary. Heartbreak is unavoidable. Loneliness is brutal."

THE ULTIMATE SUPERSTAR, FLAWED IN THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WAY BY ANNA GERLACH

28

Celebrity Spotlight

W

hen looking at Demi Lovato, we see a flawless face with beautiful freckles and a shiny, healthy complexion. We see a female body with amazing curves and we hear a voice that gives us goose bumps. The media portray Demi as a superstar, a young girl who is extremely passionate about music and her career as a shining star of the 21st century. What we cannot see, nor hear, is what lies beneath the beauty and fame of the 25-year old. Nor can we explain why a few weeks ago, she was hospitalized after a heroin overdose… Or, can we? DEMI HOW WE KNOW HER Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, the singer, songwriter and actress started out learning the piano before landing her first acting job on the kids TV series "Barney & Friends," when she was 7 years old. A new star was born when in 2008, she celebrated a massive breakthrough with her starring role in the Disney original movie "Camp Rock." Playing the role of Mitchie Torres, a young teen who discovers her confidence through her voice, Demi inspired young girls of the generation Y, while making herself a big name within the industry. In the same year, Demi signed with Hollywood Records and published her tribute album "Don’t Forget."

Images sourced via: Instagram / Photographer: Angelo Kritikos

What followed were further huge TV roles in "Sonny with a Chance", as well a role on American musical comedy-drama, "Glee." Demi went on to release 5 more music albums for which she gained an impressive collection of awards, including an MTV Music Award, 13 Teen Choice Awards, five People’s Choice Awards, an ALMA Award, and one Latin American Music Award. But it’s not only Demi’s incredible voice and acting skills that has seen her rise to the top. Outside of the show biz world she has showed her caring nature in multiple ways, including becoming a mentor for teens and young adults at the National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day in 2013; or her role as an advocate for the LGBT community, besides acing as the face of the Marriage Equality Campaign. A DARKER SIDE But as every happy success story has a dark side, so does this one. Her self-written lyrics have revealed some of her pain with songs such as "Father," "Sober," and

"Confident." The icon has unveiled a side of her that nobody would have imagined when seeing her as a young teen, happily singing alongside Disney colleague Joe Jonas. Among other former Disney alumni who suffered from the tight schedules and restricted privacy, like Selena Gomez, Hilary Duff and Miley Cyrus, Lovato later unveiled she suffered from PTSD as a result of giving up much of her childhood.

THE SINGER, SONGWRITER AND ACTRESS STARTED OUT LEARNING THE PIANO BEFORE LANDING HER FIRST ACTING JOB ON THE KIDS TV SERIES "BARNEY & FRIENDS," WHEN SHE WAS 7 YEARS OLD. What I didn’t know back then, when watching her as a rising star, was that she was already suffering with addictive behaviour at as young as 16 years of age. Two years later, she reported that she couldn’t go 30 minutes without using cocaine, smuggling it with her wherever she went. At that age, I didn’t even know what cocaine really was.

June, singing: "Momma, I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore/ And daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor/ To the ones who never left me/ We’ve been down this road before/ I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore." At the end of July, the world stood still when Demi was brought to hospital following an overdose. Now she will spend several months in rehab, fighting against her demons to get back to her healthy self. Demi Lovato is the perfect example of a child growing up in pain and without having the time to be and live as a child. Could this be the root of her addiction issues? One thing is for sure, addiction can’t simply be solved by taking some time off. It is an ongoing process. Fighting a demon within oneself that so many other young people out there have to cope with. One thing is for sure, we at Society are standing behind you Demi, we know you can find the warrior inside yourself to push past this and be an inspiration for millions of young people all over the world.

Besides her struggle as a Disney superstar, another explanation for her mental state relates back to her family situation and the demise of her parents’ marriage when she was just 2 years old. Her parents split due to her father, Patrick Lovato’s, severe alcoholism. Demi went on to cut contact with him entirely. However, in 2013, after fighting against cancer, he passed away, leaving her heartbroken again.

"SIMPLY COMPLICATED" While evolving from a Disney star to an internationally acclaimed mega pop icon, Demi started suffering from Bipolar Disorder, began self-harming and developed an eating disorder. Plus her troubled relationship with drugs excelled. In 2013, Demi checked herself into rehab for the first time. After celebrating almost 6 years of sobriety, in 2017, she published her YouTube documentary "Simply Complicated," where she fully unveiled the facts about her struggle with alcohol and drugs, talking of the things that she learned she said, "Sex is natural. Love is necessary. Heartbreak is unavoidable. Loneliness is brutal." Here is where she began to show her true self and the warrior that lies beneath the beautiful face. However, in March this year, she had her first relapse and soon after, she published her song "Sober" in

I

n 2005 I was on a plane from Heathrow to Brisbane. After several hours wedged uncomfortably into my seat, I decided to stretch my legs. Walking down the aisle between rows of strangers, I stopped next to an emergency exit to gaze through the window. As I stared for many minutes at the vast, cumulous clouds passing hypnotically by and the glistening ocean far below, I gradually became acutely aware of the unbroken droning of the engines over the music in my headphones. Resting my shoulder against the plane’s bulkhead, feeling the engines’ steady vibrations course through me as I squinted into the sun, I began to truly marvel at my situation. Surrounded by hundreds of indifferent fellow passengers - chatting, reading, sleeping - I suddenly had what some might refer to as an epiphany. Others, specifically those from my hometown of Dover would probably call it more of a “shit-yourself moment”. Here I was, in a great big metal tube weighing literally hundreds of tons (not including American tourists), flying at 550 miles per hour 35,000 feet above the earth.... through clouds..... for the best part of a day!? Never having been the least bit scared of air travel, it now dawned on me just how remarkable, bizarre and downright unnatural it really was. I felt a little lightheaded. With so many moving parts operating at such heights, speeds and market-competitive prices over such durations, it suddenly seemed disconcertingly weird that the majority of planes don’t develop some fault or other and just fall out of the sky, taking our fragile, wingless little bodies and even more fragile little packs of complimentary peanuts with them.

Reasoning that these things were designed by geniuses and rigorously maintained by professionals (even the Ryan Air ones), I managed to drag myself back into a state of probablynot-about-to-die relative calmness. Nonetheless, it was a genuine moment of fear at my own mortality and awe at how far we’ve come as a species thanks to a relative handful of ridiculously clever people. Though hardly an everyday occurrence for me before this point, air travel was something i’d clearly not granted its full dues, but that 23 hour journey through the heavens now pushed the notion firmly into the realm of science fiction where it belonged. It made me think about the progress we’ve made and the dizzying science behind so much of what we take for granted. We were truly living in the future.... then I stepped off the plane in Australia and saw my first mullet...

Years later, that experience sticks with me (the flying round the world in a big lump of metal thing, not the mullet). It causes me to really reflect on our incredible achievements. I say “our” even though i’ve never personally designed a great flying machine or grown just the back of my hair to shoulder length. Granted it’s a doublebusy, noisy world but how often do we stop to really take it in and marvel at just how far removed we are from even our closest biological brethren? We share 99% of our DNA with chimpanzees, yet they’ve not progressed past making cups of tea and wanking in tyres hanging from trees, whilst we’ve been to the frigging moon!

WE WERE TRULY LIVING IN THE FUTURE... THEN I STEPPED OFF THE PLANE IN AUSTRALIA AND SAW MY FIRST MULLET...

HERE IS THE THING ABOUT... ...the 5 Love Languages

Just like our communication alters through countenance and gestures, so do the different languages of love. "The 5 Love Languages" is a book written by author Dr Gary Chapman, an international best-seller. In this ground breaking piece of literature, Chapman explains that we all speak ’love’ just like a language such as English, Dutch or French.

32

A

Here Is The Thing About

At first this might sound pretty complex to you, but here is the thing, it is actually really simple! A lot of people have said that discovering the 5 love languages changed their lives in a magnificent way. It has saved marriages and relationships, simply by making the complex communication between two partners a little bit easier. Even Kelly Hurliman, wardrobe stylist to Oprah Winfrey stated: “The 5 Love Languages changed my life. It changed my marriage. There's such simplicity in its message, but I feel like it's so powerful." But, of course, we are not Oprah’s wardrobe stylist and we certainly do not believe in everything the media tells us right away… The first time I discovered this common sense approach, I actually wasn’t in love at all, but suffering from a serious heartbreak. My online psychologist - yes, I made usage of an app for this matter - told me that I would have to discover my personal love language first, before I would be ready to find the right partner. I was really excited when 5 minutes later she sent me a link to a website. There I found a free online quiz where, after completion, I would finally figure out my love language. But before I get more into the details, here is a little overview for you on the 5 languages of love and what exactly they mean:

small ones, like a flower he picked for you, a cupcake from your favourite bakery or even an unexpected tank fill. It’s about all the little things which are meant to show you that your partner really knows and cares about you. 5. PHYSICAL TOUCH Nope, this one is not merely related to sexual intercourse (although this surely is one part of it). The physical touch as your first love language means that you adore when your partner holds your hand in public, when you kiss each other, even a slight kiss on your forehead or a soft back rub when sitting in the doctor’s waiting room. Here it is all about THE TOUCH! So after quickly completing my profile and saying whether I was single or in a relationship, I went through all 30 paired statements. Each time, I had to pick the one that I found most meaningful to me. An example could have been: To me, its more meaningful when… 1. My partner gives me a gift. 2. I hear my partner tell me, "I appreciate you."

BUT, OF COURSE, WE ARE NOT OPRAH’S WARDROBE STYLIST AND WE CERTAINLY DO NOT BELIEVE IN EVERYTHING THE MEDIA TELLS US RIGHT AWAY…

1. WORDS OF AFFIRMATION If this one is your first love language, hearing your loved one telling you words of affection, praise, or appreciation such as "Baby, I love you so much," or "I appreciate you," are the most meaningful to you and very important to keep you happy in a relationship. On the other hand, if your partner doesn’t affirm you, but gets verbally aggressive, this can hurt your feelings especially.

2. QUALITY TIME Everyone loves to spend quality time with their loved one! However, if it is your first love language, it’s CRUCIAL that your partner expresses his/her affection with undivided, undistracted attention. Getting dumped on a date or being in love with someone who hasn’t got much time for you will cause a lot of misery here. 3. ACTS OF SERVICE This defines that actions speak louder than words for you, when it comes to showing and receiving love. It’s about your partner being willing to bring out the trash, showing proactiveness and willingness to help and be there for you. Someone who does not care about any of this and makes you do all the work in the relationship (and household), someone who is simply being lazy, won’t be your soulmate - trust me. 4. RECEIVING GIFTS Oh, how beautiful it is to receive those precious little gifts now and then, am I right? Here, the meaning of gifts does not refer to huge presents like that new Tiffany necklace you really want. It’s about all the gifts, especially the

The result was pretty clear, but still eyeopening: My first love language was the "Physical Touch". However, at this point, I was single and craving for someone to hold me. Moreover, in my last relationship, holding each other and kissing etc. was very rare. And one thing that this test doesn’t know about me is: I always want what I cannot have!

And so here is the thing about the 5 love languages: I redid the test just now. About 10 months after going through those questions the first time, my first love language had changed to "Acts of Services." Wow! How could this be? Was this drastic change caused by all the changes that happened in my life within those past 10 months? Or does everyone have a different love language depending on their kind of relationship? My current partner’s first love language was the "Physical Touch" and he was certainly a bit devastated when I told him that now we don’t speak the same language - lovewise. However, we both learnt something in order to best express love and affection for each other. And the payoff of speaking each other's love language will sooner or later be a deeper sense of our connection. Try the test online & read the book, whether you are single, or with your partner and see for yourself: www.5lovelanguages.com

SISKO AKT presents

An Unforgettable

FASHION Story

How exactly is a great idea born, and which factors bring it to life and give this idea a true purpose and meaning?

F

or us, Sisko Akt has been a project that we created with true love and passion, combining our different styles and personalities as sisters and offering a unique vision of fashion to the world. The outcome has been overwhelming, and after three years of working side by side, creating, producing, directing and modelling together, we can openly say that we have had the beautiful opportunity to work with extremely talented professionals from the field. We cherish our co-workers, who have become part of a big family and we thank them for unconditionally supporting our project, without them it would not have come to life in the way that it did. Another gift that resulted from Sisko Akt, has been a deeper connection as sisters, best friends, and business partners, so we can confirm that working together in family can unite and bring you closer as a team. Fashion, creativity, and travel has had an immense meaning in our lives since we were very young girls. Fashion has transcended world history and as a result, all of the social, political, and cultural changes have marked all of society deeply, in a way that fashion has become more than purchasing brands or chasing the latest trends. It is a human form of expression, as it expresses the culture we were born into, and the changes we have gone through and are constantly going through in our lives. Therefore, throughout our fashion section, we have always strived to express and reflect upon relevant subjects like cultural and historical matters and create a window to explore exotic and beautiful locations around the world whilst presenting something unique. From shooting in the driest desert in the world, to the exotic Moroccan dunes at sunset and experiencing the history of Cuba or reflecting upon the power of fashion in the corporate world, here we want to share some of our favourite editorials, and, with the end of Summer and beginning of Autumn close, it is the perfect time to enjoy an unforgettable journey of two sisters, two styles, and much more... Hasta pronto! We want to sincerely thank the Society Magazine team for gracefully handing over to us, month by month, the immense trust and freedom to express our creativity and (sometimes crazy) ideas through our passion for fashion and creative direction.

Wow, when we look at these pictures, we can say that it was hands down the most challenging production of all! In fact, we had a location confirmed in a Cuban chiringuito in Marbella, and once on set, the sky turned black, there was a huge thunderstorm coming our way, so we raced against the clouds towards Mรกlaga, and had to improvise this shoot with only an hour and a half! One of the most memorable Sisko Akt shoots, storm included!

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mind-blowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.

Hair and Beyond This month Jonathan talks about what’s setting the world of hairdressing on fire.

FAST TRACK LUXURY The salon seems to be inundated with all things shiny and new this month. First up, I would like to introduce Great Lengths latest innovation, GL Tape Extensions. The GL tapes are inch-long strips of 100% human hair - medical grade, hypo-allergenic with non-toxic tape. The stylist basically takes an inch-long strip of your hair about the same thickness as one GL Tape, then sandwiches it by applying a tape extension underneath and on-top by squeezing them together. Once your full-head (30-40 strips) has been applied, they’re cut into shape to look as natural as possible. They can last from six to eight weeks and you can then have them re-taped and re-applied up to three times, which makes them a much more affordable option of hair extensions. Of course, as usual, the quality of Great Lengths products are amazing.

66

I would hand on my heart say that there is definitely a place for them even if it’s just due to the speed of applying them. Yes Princess Lottie felt she couldn’t scrape her hair into her usual gypsy bun, BUT they did go into her hair in under an hour, were comfortable to wear and when dressed down they looked stunning. So let’s not take Lottie’s opinion as gospel on this one! So which type of client would these work for? People who wear wefts will always wear wefts, but I feel the tapes come somewhere between bonds and wefts. Affordable, low-maintenance and super-quick to apply, what’s not to love?

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

JOIN THE RESISTENCE

YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE

Regular readers will know about my slight obsession with the Kerastase range, so you can imagine my sheer delight when they launched their new line Kerastase Resistance Extentioniste. It stimulates the scalp, then gently detangles lengths while reinforcing and finally sealing the ends. Basically in simple terms - it’s for strengthening. If you think about it, the mid length to the ends of your hair can be anything from 2-7 years old. This hair has of course been bruised, battered and abused over the years, so it tends to be significantly weaker than the rest of the hair. The Extentioniste range consists of a length-boosting shampoo (23,00€), anti-breakage conditioner (28,50€), weekly hair mask (42,50€), and the hero product of the range, the Scalp and Hair Serum (38,50€). Containing ceramides, it’s designed to be used on both scalp and hair to restore hair fibre cuticles and protect them as they grow. It’s perfect for anyone wanting longer hair as it reinforces the structure and surface of the hair, while giving it a healthy glow.

We would like to welcome Lesley Mearns to Reflections. Scottish born and bread, she has been living on the Coast for the past two years and is like a much needed ray of sunshine in the salon. Already proving herself to be a valuable member of the team, she excels in colour and cutting. With her sunny disposition

The feedback from my clients has already been extremely positive and although it is aimed at anyone who is struggling to grow their hair, it can be used on most hair types. I mean who doesn’t want stronger hair? Did I mention that it smells dead nice as well?

PEOPLE WHO WEAR WEFTS WILL ALWAYS WEAR WEFTS, BUT I FEEL THE TAPES COME SOMEWHERE BETWEEN BONDS AND WEFTS. AFFORDABLE, LOWMAINTENANCE AND SUPER-QUICK TO APPLY, WHATS NOT TO LOVE?

she manages to put even the most nervous clients at ease. I also love her very individual look, which makes for a refreshing change to the Marbella norm. I DO like people who smile. When you have to spend 15 years working next to someone who has a natural aversion to upper lip movement, (we all know who I am talking about,) having Leslie working next to me is like having a massive hit of B12.

AND THE GOLDEN STAR GOES TO...

I am going to shine a spotlight on my favourite hair work from the team this month. Starting with the lovely Lauren, I think this hair overhaul is a perfect example of just how good Lauren’s work is. She has mirrored the clients personality by creating a hair look which is understated, elegant and classy. Lauren started off by balayaging soft caramel tones through a very natural base. This lifted the overall look without committing the client to regular highlight appointments. As the client has naturally curly hair it has a tendency to look dry because of the lack of moisture. As soon as you start adding colour you are only going to increase the dehydration of the hair, which will make the hair look more unkept. Lauren counteracted this by using the obligatory Olaplex, (I am even advocating drinking the damn stuff.) The process was finished off with a damn good blow dry. For this look the emphasis was less is more and Lauren nailed it.

Paul has to deal with two issues here. Dehydrated hair with yellow tones. Again as this clients hair is naturally curly it leans towards being dry and the blonde process will of course only add to this issue. As hairdressers we spend most of our time trying to get rid of the yellow tones in blonde hair so Paul had to tackle the colour correction issue without making the hair condition suffer. Paul achieved this by using a cream blonde and fine ash lowlight. He finished off by applying the Nanokeratin treatment (220€), a semi-permanent hair repair and smoothing system that locks in colour and transforms dry, damaged or unruly hair into stronger, repaired hair. It eliminates bad hair days for up to 12 weeks giving you the ability to recreate salon-style blow dries with ultimate shine at home.

I just want to finish this column with the following, not wanting to be labelled a bitch or anything but you know what that say, what comes around goes around!!! Ta-Ra!

Having the right tools to balance out our sins can at times, act like a get out of jail free card. After years of supporting people from around the globe to feel and look good in the body they crave (and deserve!), I have a few fabulous tools on hand that I have seen deliver amazing results time and time again.

Yes, our bodies are designed to cleanse themselves. But in today’s world we come into contact with thousands of chemicals, toxins and pollutants every single day, not to mention the added indulgence of summer: potent cocktails, overflowing wine and rich foods. So it is no real surprise that our systems become overwhelmed leading to a variety of unwelcome symptoms:

Long term results will never come from extreme deprivation, lifestyle balance is always the key. Working with me means getting to indulge in the things you enjoy in moderation and without reliance, with no “diets” in sight. I’m offering private & free consultations to see if my program is right for you and even better, it is risk free for 30 days! If you don’t love it, get your money back!

What is Nutritional Cleansing? Nutritional cleansing is a natural, clinically proven and scientifically formulated program designed to help remove potentially harmful toxins and impurities from the body, restoring your natural balance. With the focus of the

Why Nutritional Cleanse? Using this process allows the body to ‘dejunk’ at a cellular level without the use of diuretics or laxatives - very different to the short lived results of a typical colon/juice cleanse. Instead, nutritional cleansing nourishes the body with dense nutrients allowing it to reset and recharge, whilst still metabolising (burning fat). This is known as autophagy, it is basically the body's way of recycling poor quality, unused stored waste & putting it to good use! Just some of the benefits: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Ask yourself, are toxins dragging down your health, weight & energy levels?

Who will benefit from adding Nutritional C leansing into their lifestyle? Just about everyone. I’ve been using this system daily, both personally, & with clients from around the globe with huge success for 4 years now and I find it to be the perfect lifestyle partner, balancing out our sins to reach health goals and - here is the key maintain them.

My top tips to start cleansing your body today!

1

Combat plaque that builds up overnight on your cells & kick start your digestive system by starting your day with a large glass of room temperature water, the juice of - fresh lemon & a pinch of salt, ideally pink (sea salt is ok!)

¼ 1/2

2

A healthy gut is the key to overall health; increase your intake of high fibre foods - kale is a great detoxifier! Add a daily dose of a good quality Greek yogurt for extra probiotics (not Greek style!)

3

It might seem obvious but drink lots of water especially in this heat! Dehydration is too often mistreated with food! (Unnecessary calories!)

4

Dry brush to exfoliate the body, allowing your skin to shed that top layer to rejuvenate and breathe – our skin is our largest organ absorbing anything that comes into contact with it in 26 secs! Be mindful of the products you use.

5

Get more quality sleep – this is when our bodies get the most rest. As boring as it sounds, every hour slept before midnight acts as 2!

MAGNA SUPERCARS CONCOURS D’ ELEGANCE –

SHOWTIME!

MARBELLA IS HOME TO SOME OF THE WORLD'S MOST SPECTACULAR SUPERCARS By Ian Kuah

W

orld famous for its wonderful Mediterranean climate, blue coastal waters, and spectacular mountain backdrop, Marbella attracts royalty, the rich and famous, as well as normal people, to call it their home or second home. Situated on the southernmost part of Europe facing North Africa and close to Malaga, the cultural capital of Spain’s Andalucia region, Marbella is also home to the highest concentration of supercars in the country. With owners from as far afield as Norway and Thailand these supercars and many fine classics represent a big part of the car culture here. Enthusiasts from other parts of Spain also bring their cars to Marbella to escape the greater heat from inland regions in summer, and the cold and wet weather in winter. The first formal concours d’elegance took place in Marbella in 2015. Encompassing supercars and classics, this debut event was a resounding success, and has become a highlight of the last week of

88

each July ever since. While this is close to the hottest time of the year in Europe, it is also the period when many car enthusiasts take their summer vacations, arriving in Marbella with their classics and supercars.

WITH OWNERS FROM AS FAR AFIELD AS NORWAY AND THAILAND THESE SUPERCARS AND MANY FINE CLASSICS REPRESENT A BIG PART OF THE CAR CULTURE HERE. Previous events have also witnessed some beautiful classic cars in Marbella concours events. Some were even driven

hundreds of kilometres from Valencia and Pamplona in Northern Spain to take part. Cars are made to be driven and there is no better way than this. This year the Marbella event was branded as the Magna Supercars Concours d’ Elegance in honour of the first Anniversary of Marbella’s premier luxury and supercar storage company. Magna Supercars stores, maintains and sells cars for owners who are not here all the time, their high security premises a virtual Aladdin’s cave of the world’s most exclusive supercars like the Bugatti Chiron, LaFerrari and McLaren P1. The 2018 Concours d’ Elegance held

TORQUE TALK

at the Magna Marbella Golf Course on 26th July was an invitation only event for up to 80 cars and 160 VIPs. However, interest ran so high that it was quickly over-subscribed and 105 cars graced the immaculate lawns on the day. As before the event was run to the French Concours Rules so the cars were primarily rated on their visual impact; the so-called ‘wow’ factor. The judges thus rated each car by its style, beauty and elegance, which accounted for 50-percent of the points. The remaining 50-percent of the score was based on condition, authenticity, restoration (if applicable), rarity, and historical Importance.

The overall winner, which exactly met every one of these criteria, was the incredible Lamborghini Aventador J, the factory show car presented at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. This car now lives in Marbella, the perfect place for driving a roadster. Unsurprisingly, its very wealthy owner has turned down many substantial offers for the car with a big smile.

Porsche’s Porsche’s old old school school driving driving machine machine hits hits a a sweet sweet spot spot MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE

GT3 Touring

91

TORQUE TALK

WHILE IT SOUNDS A BIT TRITE AND HACKNEYED THE ACTION OF THE GT3 TOURING’S SHORT SHIFT GEAR LEVER REALLY DOES OPERATE WITH THE PRECISION OF A RIFLE BOLT.

E

nthusiasts of Porsche’s evergreen 911 have always been divided into two camps. Some like the pure outline of the car sans spoilers, while others like the spoilers and bigger wheel arches. Meanwhile, and since the arrival of PDK yet another group has emerged to champion the manual gearbox. While Porsche never forsook the manual option in their mainstream Carrera, the search for ultimate lap times led the GT car division to a PDK only specification for the 991 GT3 of 2014, resulting in a storm of protest from purist customers.

92

In response to this Andreas Preuninger and his team took a step back and released the Cayman GT4 in 2015, followed by the 911R in 2016. The success of these manual only models prompted a choice of PDK or manual gearboxes for the 991.2 GT3 launched last year. But an even better idea is the road focused GT3 Touring, which looks more discrete than its winged sister as a daily driver.

While it sounds a bit trite and hackneyed the action of the GT3 Touring’s short shift gear lever really does operate with the precision of a rifle bolt. This is one of the first things you notice when you get behind the wheel and your hand naturally falls on the short, stubby lever. At that point no self-respecting enthusiast can resist depressing the clutch and operating the shifter.

The cabin also takes on a different tone from the normal GT3. There is no rear seat or Club Sport package option with half roll cage, and the Alcantara centres of the deep bucket seats is replaced with fabric.

Some car manufacturers only provide a steering column adjustment for rake. Porsche understand the importance of a perfect driving position to both posture and long-term comfort and so

TORQUE TALK

make their steering columns adjustable for reach as well. Introduced on the 991 GT models, a small rocker switch on the front side of the bucket seat operates an electrical height adjuster. With all these separate adjustments available it is unlikely that anyone will have trouble finding their ideal personal set-up. When I drove the 991.2 GT3 at Guadix last year the 9,000rpm rev limit seemed quite natural with the PDK taking care of perfect upshifts each time, every time. And as we have seen from the likes of Le Mans winner Marc Lieb, some Porsche engineers are professional drivers too, so they know how to set up a car perfectly in every respect including the PDK gearbox’s shift points. In the GT3 Touring these lines of computer code exist in your brain, making the speed and smoothness of each shift entirely down to you as the driver. That means your mastery of heel and toe downshifts and trail braking are the icing on the cake of a fluid and rapid drive down a twisty road or around a racetrack.

In normal road driving the 1,413kg GT3 Touring is a docile beast. Considering it has to handle the Type 9A1 4.0 litre engine’s 500hp at 8,250rpm and 460Nm of torque at 6,000rpm the clutch is not excessively heavy, and nicely matches the firm weight of the throttle. This balance and linearity of steering, clutch, brakes and throttle is a defining characteristic that marks out every Porsche as a true drivers’ car.

dual mass flywheel right to the edge. They managed to reduce it a smidgen further for the GT2 RS and GT3 RS.

Featuring very over-square dimensions of 102 x 81.5mm for 3,996cc, the big displacement flat-six motor that is shared with the race bred RSR revs eagerly to a heady 9,000rpm! That also means 125.1hp/litre on a 13.3:1 compression ratio.

Compared to the PDK equipped GT3 the Touring, and indeed the mechanically identical manual base GT3 have noticeably slower 0-100km/h and 0-200km/h times of 3.9 sec and 11.4 sec respectively against the stopwatch. The 3.4 sec 0-100km/h sprint and 11.0 sec to 200km/h times show off the advantage conferred by the extra ratio and electronic controls of the PDK transmission. The manual has a 312km/h (194mph) top whack.

Where the seven-speed PDK uses an electronically controlled limited slip differential, the 15kg lighter six-speed manual is equipped with a mechanical limited slip differential featuring a 30% locking action under acceleration and 37% on the overrun. I remember Andy telling me on the 991 GT3 launch that you cannot use a single mass flywheel with PDK, so his team had to reduce the weight of the

For comfort reasons the Touring has a dual mass flywheel as well, albeit a pretty light one, and the short throws of the six-speed manual gearbox feel precise and mechanical thanks to precision metal bushes that have no lost motion.

However, such empirical stats do not allude to the all important driver grin factor of swapping your own cogs smoothly with perfect rev matching, not to mention the delight you get from perfect heel and toe downshifts on the approach to a bend.

THE RATE AT WHICH THE SCENERY AROUND YOU GOES INTO BLUR MODE IS SO VERY DIFFERENT COMPARED TO A WIDE OPEN RACE TRACK WHERE THINGS FEEL COMMENSURATELY SLOWER.

94

TORQUE TALK

One thing that stands out in normal driving is the strong low-end torque of the 4.0 litre flat six. You can drive around in a relatively high ratio, say third gear at 50km/h (30mph) and get good pickup from there. I did a couple of acceleration runs through the gears, as well as intermediate gear runs starting in second and third. As always the revs soaring so high, so rapidly is a totally visceral experience with a screaming buzz saw soundtrack to match. One thing that I did notice was a difference in the way the engine came on cam between 5,000 and 9,000rpm in second and third gears. While first is over too rapidly to warrant a comment, there appears to be a discernible step in the acceleration in second gear at around 5,000rpm, while third gear is much more linear. This made me wonder if perhaps there is a line of code limiting the torque in the first two gears to help traction off the line. With so much power and torque on tap using just 4,000rpm gets the car moving along smartly on public roads. When you do get the chance to open the taps fully the speed gathering is simply astonishing, and the rate at

which the scenery around you goes into blur mode is so very different compared to a wide open race track where things feel commensurately slower. The seven-speeder in the mainstream Carrera has longer throws from a longer lever - and one gear too many for a sportscar in my opinion. And its downshift throttle blip aid is only there to make tyros who have not mastered the art of driving a manual car look like heroes. The six-speed manual used here by the GT car division is the real deal. All Porsche models are fundamentally over-braked for their engine power, something that is a basic philosophy within the company. However, I have become very used to the unimpeachable stopping power of the PCCB brakes worn by the GT3, GT3 RS and GT2 RS, which are essentially the anchors from the heavier and faster 918 Spyder. With the best road car brakes in the world as my benchmark, even in fast road conditions I found the response and retarding power of the Touring’s standard steel brakes rather marginal. Road car or not I’d tick the PCCB box on the order form every time.

95

TORQUE TALK

The chassis settings for the Touring are the same as the GT3 but clearly the aerodynamic downforce is less at the rear where the automatically deployed retractable spoiler and a small Gurney flap help to reduce lift at speed. “The front end is the same as the GT3 but without the rear wing we had to work more on the underbody aerodynamics to compensate,” Andy explained. “We developed a new rear diffuser in the wind tunnel that cleans up the departing airflow to reduce lift. But in the end the Touring has significantly less downforce at the rear compared to the normal GT3.” This means that the Touring is less planted at the rear in very fast corners on the autobahn and on track, but in normal road driving, especially when charging mountain roads at speeds up to 130km/h (80mph) you should not feel any difference. On the familiar country roads that I used as my test

96

route turn in, mid-corner balance, and sheer mechanical grip at both ends of the Touring felt no different from its winged sister. Porsche continue to present one of the best electric power steering systems in the business. Couple this to a rear end whose active steering is so seamless it only draws attention to itself by the way the car turns in keenly and chases the apex and you have a car whose set-up is perfect as can be. Until the GT team presents the next one that is. Which brings me to the fact that times do indeed move on. Although it was only two years since I drove the 911R on more of less the same country roads and autobahns around Stuttgart, the GT3 Touring feels different enough from its spiritual predecessor to warrant both subjective and objective comment. The 911R was something of an experiment on Porsche’s part, its genesis stimulated by the hue and cry

TORQUE TALK

of traditional manual gearshift addicts and the subsequent sell-out success of the Cayman GT4. There is a tendency for outsiders to look at a car in isolation, as if each model suddenly appears as a whole and holistic entity unto itself. But the reality, especially so with the 911, which has undergone continuous development since its 1964 debut, is the step-by-step improvements seen in each succeeding model that reflect the progress in road and race technology gained with each passing year. It is therefore patently unfair for some enthusiasts to accuse Porsche of releasing the GT3 Touring as a successor to the 911R concept with an open production number that will potentially devalue the limited edition 991 GT3-based 911R. Porsche does not make the market for rare cars that rocket in value. If anything they deplore the fact that their cars are being treated as financial instruments, and that these great driving machines will be locked away in heated garages rather than being driven and enjoyed. The other fact is that Porsche had already set its model strategy way ahead to use the same next generation 4.0 litre motor in both its road and racecars. Thus the 991.2 GT3

the 996 GT3 RS to be his first car. He and his team have been hard at work ever since improving the genre.

There is nothing sinister about this, and if some people think the GT3 Touring undermines the worth of the 911R then they are plain wrong. The fact is that each of these models is a statement of its individual era. Because of the development years that separate them these were the best cars that could be made with the available technology and expertise available to the engineers at the time. Period.

With the latest 991.2 GT3 range, they have now created a niche within a niche, offering three distinct variations within this narrowly concentrated band of pure drivers’ car.

Porsche has always had a talent for creating distinct flavours of their evergreen 911, each a complete statement in itself. The first GT3 made its debut in 1999 and Andreas Preuninger joined Weissach in time for

100

The basic GT3 perfectly balances the demands of road and track, while the GT3 Touring is more biased towards road driving, and looks more subtle too. At the top of the tree the GT3 RS is a hard-core track machine par excellence, yet retains enough comfort to be used on the street. Never mind the fact that the PDK transmission makes the GT3 faster on track and easier to live with in traffic,

the Touring is about full engagement with your car on as many levels as possible in order to enjoy the subjective art of driving for pleasure, as opposed to winning that last empirical split second on track. Seen from this perspective the GT3 Touring does exactly what it says on the tin for the dedicated driver who wants to feel in total control, and enjoys mastery of the extra skill set that being quick and smooth in a manual car demands. No other car manufacturer has managed to focus one model so cleverly and so completely in so many ways, but then Porsche has had over 50 years of experience with the 911. Practice does indeed make perfect.

WHY

& HOW

TO COLLECT

CONTEMPORARY

ART

Why should you surround yourself with contemporary art and how do you go about starting or enhancing your own art collection? We have spoken to an experienced art collector and established gallery owner on how to do it the right way and what should be the main objectives for both the new, curious art buyer as well as the more skilled collector.

Mattias Tönnheim, Owner and Director of Wadström Tönnheim Gallery

A

rt can and should be more than a decorative piece in your home, regardless if we are talking about paintings, drawings, sculptures, objects, photos or textiles. The art that you surround yourself with is also a reflection of yourself, much in the same way that the books you have on your shelves, what kind of clothes you wear or what kind of furniture you have in your home is also. Living with art, forms part of a lifestyle which is not only mind opening but also offers multiple advantages such as pleasure, education and participation into what is going on in the world around us. A work of art that gives you pleasure and resonance will never be a bad investment. Having acquired over time a good eye, knowledge, patience and passion plus a long term plan, your art collection can become a solid economic asset. There are, however no quick fixes or easy money to be made in the art world, unless you work as a professional art dealer. The art market is one of the few unregulated markets in the world and it’s driven by knowledge, supply and demand.

We decided to have a chat with Mattias Tönnheim, gallery owner and director of Wadström Tönnheim Gallery who recently opened their second gallery in Marbella in April. Their first gallery has been based in Southern Sweden for a number of years. Their galleries are specialised in contemporary art by emerging and established artists, predominately by Scandinavian artists. Since the gallery’s expansion to Marbella, they have also added a more international roster of artists. Mattias is a seasoned collector from a very young age and knows the market fluently.

“I actually bought my first real art work from an established Swedish gallery when I was only seventeen and still in school. I invested a small part of my inheritance from my mother in a constructivist art piece by the Swedish artist Eric H Olson. I still have it, still like it and it has been a modest economic investment so far. But as a personal asset it is most revered and appreciated. Every time I look at it, it reminds me of my beloved mother and all the times she brought me to galleries or art museums. This is the beauty of collecting and surrounding yourself with quality art,” says Mattias. “I have made some really good acquisitions during my 28 years of art collecting. As a collector I always have a hard time parting with my treasured art works, even though it sometimes becomes necessary. And now as a gallery owner it is even more important what kind of art we decide to exhibit, keep, sell and support. But this is my life - art is a powerful passion for me, the gallery is my homage to my mother and my collection is part of my legacy.”

ART IS A POWERFUL PASSION FOR ME, THE GALLERY IS MY HOMAGE TO MY MOTHER AND MY COLLECTION IS PART OF MY LEGACY. - Mattias Tönnheim MATIAS DI CARLO

Here is Mattias general tips for buying and creating a promising art collection. 1. Leave your comfort zone and do your research. Visit a lot of galleries and museums. Explore and see a lot of art and take time to find out what you really find interesting and enjoy. The art world is a global community and being part of it on any level will always give rise to new and exciting discoveries. Social media is also a powerful tool because of its’ directness and easy access. Instagram is one platform that has become very useful in recent years due to the high concentration of artists and galleries who share their work there. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the art or the artist (for example, where did the artist get their education, where has the artist been exhibited and is there a statement/text about the artist or the art work that you can read etc.). When you have found what you like, google the artists and the

gallery, read reviews about the exhibitions they made, what galleries, art fairs and shows have they been in. Knowledge is king. 2. Don’t only decorate with art. Buy what reflects you as an individual, not only what fits next to the dining table or above the sofa. Your taste will probably change over the years. It’s normal and don’t be afraid of this. If you get bored with a piece – sell it. Always buy art with your eyes - never with your ears. And remember great art will outlive most of your furniture and even yourself.

dealer to an accomplished stock broker that helps you with your savings, as many of the same principles apply - build trust and relationships via personal meetings, shared passions and if necessary take references and do a background check on the people you are going to trust with your money. If they cannot, or will not, answer your questions, don’t do business with them.

3. Develop a strong relationship with one or a couple of galleries and art dealers and trust their judgement. While collecting art may only be your hobby, it is always going to be their full time job. This is crucial if you don’t have the time to invest but would still like expert advice. You can compare a serious gallery or art

DANIEL FLEUR

ALWAYS BUY ART WITH YOUR EYES, NEVER WITH YOUR EARS. Only buy art from serious galleries that operate a proper business, who can vouch for the artists that they represent and serve. That includes everything from transparent information about the artists to authenticity papers (provenance) and of course proper receipts for your purchases. Remember that there are no guarantees that the art that you buy is going to increase in value and the same applies for any investments in the general financial markets. Because the art market is unregulated, it needs to be approached with a level head. Watch out for Ponzi scheme (pyramid scheme) art dealers that promise any fixed increase in value of the art that they offer. If you want to invest larger sums of money into art, always consult with an independent art appraiser or a public auction house first before parting with your money.

CHARLOTTE WALENTIN

4. Don’t speculate - calculate. Speculating is a risky business and if you have an appetite for that, you should also be prepared to lose what you have invested. Buy only the art that you can afford. If the time comes when you want to resell an artwork it is often all about timing. If you have a trusted relationship with your gallery or art dealer, they

105

will be happy to share their art market expertise to avoid any major mistakes and often they will help you to resell the artwork. Especially if its’ by an artist that they represent and may have a long waiting list for. Plan ahead and try not to compromise with quality. If you have your eyes set on an artist’s work, come early to the exhibition opening so you have the chance to get the piece that you really want. Too many art collections contain B-list works by A-list artists, because the collector simply wanted to buy the name. If you time it right, the rewards can be exponentially greater.

HAVING ACQUIRED OVER TIME, A GOOD EYE, KNOWLEDGE, PATIENCE AND PASSION PLUS A LONG TERM PLAN, YOUR ART COLLECTION CAN BECOME A SOLID ECONOMIC ASSET. 5. Last but not least - have fun and enjoy your art. If you live with your art collection, or some parts of it, you can savour and enjoy it every day or whenever it pleases you. Invest in art you like and in artists you believe in. It will enhance your life, probably impress some of your friends and family plus it will make your life and home richer in ways that you can’t yet believe and hopefully also improve your economy, though that is an added bonus.

Here are three standard sized levels of budgets plus some clear and concrete tips of what contemporary art to collect. And remember it is important that the artists you consider have been recognized in some public way. For example that they have been published, critically acclaimed, received prestigious awards and/or grants.

T

he world used to be a simpler place. There were less directions for an average life to go, less choices, less distractions. Even in the busiest commercial centres, life’s path was set. A typical day for Crud, a medieval commoner in pre-London “Lundenwic” involved being woken at 4am by being pecked on the head by a fat chicken. Yawning through a toothless mouth, he’d trundle out of his mud hut, down a muddy lane to the mud quarry where he’d spend 14 hours digging mud and loading it into a muddy horse drawn cart. His father did this before him, and his father too. Over three generations, between the hours of 4.30am and 6.30pm (or as close as could be measured from the sun) no thought was had that didn’t involve mud. Trudging home in a near delirious state of fatigue each evening, he’d be passed by the cart, splashing muddy water onto his mud-caked clothes. Once back at his muddy home, he’d grunt at his muddy wife and muddy children before collapsing into his muddy chair to a meal of mud and onions. He’d spend a brain-dead hour methodically scraping the day’s mud from his body, only just reaching the previous day’s layer before passing out exhausted. He dreamed of mud.... and hunger. A hunger he could neither understand nor quantify, but that gnawed at his sleep and his gut. Was there more to all this? Could his mud-ravaged brain conceive another path?.... NO! there was ONLY mud.... and onions. As dawn broke, he awoke to a fat chicken pecking him on the head and trudged hungrily into the mud once more.... Cut to 2018 and a 28 year old man named Beckett wearing jeans too tight for the average 6 year old girl zips along the pavement in Shoreditch on a microscooter too small for the same 6 year old girl. His job selling multi-user social media

CELEBRITIES, GLOBAL BRANDS AND AMERICAN PRESIDENTS VIE FOR OUR ATTENTION 140 CHARACTERS AT A TIME. WE IGNORE REAL PEOPLE SAT OPPOSITE US AS WE CULTIVATE OUR VIRTUAL RELATIONSHIPS.

integration platforms to integrated multimedia social user platforms doesn’t start till 10am and he’s making the most of his commute. Whilst waiting for his SkimmedSoya Mocha Frappucino (“Fairtrade soya, paper straw...”), he bangs down a couple of vegan energy balls and checks his Bitcoin stock whilst posting a selfie of himself checking his Bitcoin stock to Instagram with the hashtag #JustCheckingMyBitcoinStockLOL …. he’s also taking a piss at this point. As he adjusts the hang on his tiny, pointless £300 scarf thing (It’s July), grabs the wrong drink off the counter, then scoots out of Starbucks, mis-interpreting the bemused looks and shaking heads of other patrons for awe-struck reverence, he muses on where he’ll take holiday number three this year. It has to have just enough old-world culture to brag about, but also enough high-speed WiFi to do so. He’s struggling to type on google whilst scootering so he cleverly decides he’ll have a proper search online at work. He’s already picturing the LIKES on his heavily filtered travel shots as he cuts across the pedestrian crossing two seconds after the green man turns red. “That shit’s for pedestri-tards” he thinks, the sounds of Arcade Fire in his headphones drowning out the sounds of angry motorists shouting “SCOOTER WANKER!” He arrives at the office with the wrong coffee, piss on his shoes and total ignorance of the fact that 400 yards away an old man is giving his car insurance details to an angry cabbie whose rear bumper he rammed at the lights. But who gives a shit right, cos his tiny, pointless scarf thing cost £300 and he works in the FUCKING media - it doesn’t get any sweeter. So how did we arrive at this new normal? No doubt a dizzyingly complex intersection of both the agrarian and industrial revolution, cultural anthropology, technological innovation, capitalist expansion and tiny, pointless fucking scarf things, but for the purposes of my rapidly diminishing word count, let’s skip a few steps and just say we replaced mud with the internet. There are now a million paths to travel in life, with thousands of expensive trains and cheap flights just a click away. Celebrities, global brands and American Presidents vie for our attention 140 characters at a time. We ignore real people sat opposite us as we cultivate our virtual relationships. We have to put

messages on the great big screen at the cinema to encourage us in vain not to look at the tiny screens in our pockets for just two hours while the great big screen we paid £12 to look at is on. We drive our cars while we talk on our phones. We work on our phones while we look after our kids and we shop on Amazon while we work. But it’s cool, because what we’re doing is “multitasking” right? We’re having our cake and eating it. We’re “getting shit DONE!” We’re “kicking names and taking... errrm... ass?.....” ... And there you have it; science has proven that much as technology has emboldened us to spin several plates at the same time, true, flawless multitasking is a myth. Researchers have shown through MRI brain scans that we’re really not concentrating on several tasks simultaneously, but switching our attention rapidly from one to another, and the result isn’t the beautiful symphony of efficiency we tell ourselves it is. Attempting to complete several tasks at the “same” time actually significantly reduces overall productivity, with a measurable lag occurring each time the brain must switch its focus.

SLOW DOWN TO SPEED UP

So try not to glance at your computer screen the next time someone’s talking to you because you might miss them say they love you. Don’t text in the car because you’ll crash the car and accidentally call your boss a flange. Don’t brush your teeth while drinking orange juice because it’s gross. Don’t LITERALLY walk off a cliff while playing Pokémon Go (this happened) and don’t read SOCIETY at work.... just quit your job. Stop living in the multitasking myth - Yes, the plates are all spinning, but look more closely and you’ll see two of the plates are dirty, one’s chipped and the other one’s a fucking frisbee! Slow down to speed up. Concentrate on one type of task at a time, get it done right, then move on to the next. You’ll get more done with less stress and your brain will thank you for it - Kicking ass and taking names. Ian Greenland, greenlandphotography.com

GO VEGAN

Improve Your Health? BY ANNA GERLACH

The vegan community has been in existence for a while now; and while many vegans swear that following a plant based diet vastly improved their health, making them feel more energetic and stronger, others, especially athletes, have stated that after a long time of living the vegan lifestyle, their muscular strength began to disappear. However, as we are living in the digital age where endless information is hitting us via the internet, the real question is: What should we believe, what trends should we follow and what is actually healthy?

I

n September 2015, the conspiracy documentary "What the Health" was released on Netflix, featuring filmmaker Kip Andersen who is a proactive believer and follower of the vegan movement as well as award-winning co-director Keegan Kuhn, who has previously worked on other films about gender inequality, animal rescues, Buddhism and environmental destruction. In "What the Health," Anderson provides us with the disturbing facts of reality. He

130

uncovers how we can actually prevent and even reverse chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart diseases and cancer with a vegan lifestyle. Medical doctors, researchers, and consumer advocates have paid tribute to the film for unveiling the corruption within the government and various large businesses within the health sector. When I first watched the movie, I was following a normal, supposedly "healthy"

diet that consisted of meat, dairy, corn, veggies, fruit and once in a while, sugar. However, after eating a steak with salad and potatoes, I did feel extremely full and my energy levels were empty. My favourite quote from the movie states: "Why would you drink the milk from a cow which was originally produced for its calf?" Yes, why? (I formerly believed that drinking milk would strengthen my bones and certainly cure the worst kinds of hangover.) Now I see I was wrong.

COSTA CUISINE

And how do I feel? The first couple of days were rough! My stomach was aching and it felt like my whole body needed to adjust to the new diet. I felt tired and pretty exhausted. However, after about a week, I saw the results: Not only was I able to loose some pounds and keep my weight steady, I also experienced that my energy throughout the day had highly increased. In short, I felt reborn. Now I am actually able to eat a big portion of food, without ever having the feeling that my body needs Not only was I able to loose some pounds and keep a long time to digest it. Even after my weight steady, I also experienced that my energy consuming a large throughout the day had highly increased. In short, I piece of chocolate cake in a local felt reborn. vegan restaurant, I felt perfectly fine and ready to go for a run.

From a completely logical point of view, this statement, which I never thought about before, definitely made me have a think about what I’ve been consuming for years. And let’s not start with the discussion about pesticides and antibiotics fed to the animals which cause abscesses and other diseases for the animals that we, in the end, consume. The list of what is going wrong when it comes to food production and healthcare beliefs is endless! If meat and dairy products actually cause us to get diabetes etc., which makes us spend our money on healthcare, pills and treatments, which obviously the pharmaceutical sector profits and survives from, then don’t you think there must be a tiny bit of truth in what Kip is trying to tell us? And after seeing actual cases in the movie of people who suffered from all those diseases, but were able to get off their medication and cure themselves by going vegan for only two weeks, definitely made my jaw drop! If a plant-based diet is everything we need to sustain a heathy body, then why don’t we just try it at least?

So, here is what I did: I changed my diet. I have been testing the vegan lifestyle for about two months now. However, let’s be honest here: I occasionally eat fish and very rarely though, consume meat and milk products. What that means: I do eat small amounts of meat and dairy maybe once within a time frame of two weeks. However, at home I have been following a straight vegan diet.

If my dietary change will, in the end, help me to not suffer from any of the above mentioned diseases can of course not be said yet. But still, the vegan lifestyle has brought a huge change into my life, many colourful recipes and food that is actually very tasty, making me feel great and giving me the satisfaction that in some way, I am contributing to a better world. What I truly believe in is that everyone needs to find their own diet. If you feel like you want to make a change, instead of following the straight rules of one specific diet, go and create one of your own! Everybody is different and finding the right balance between enjoying your food and feeling awesome can be hard to find. Try to actually listen and hear what your body is telling you. Experience the feeling after you eat specific kinds of food and then adjust your diet. The only thing you should keep in mind is if right now your body is telling you to get a Big Mac, you probably need to wash your ears…

COOL SPANISH

Whites

FOR LAST DAYS OF

Summer by Ellen Wallace

Rosé season is slipping behind us, but summer lingers and so does our thirst for cool white wines. Dry crisp whites that we love with salads and fish or just for sipping during the first hot days of summer when we don’t want heavier alcohols are now seeming a bit boring - time to try white wines that offer more punch to take us into the first days of autumn.

S

pain is giving us some good alternative wines these days. Spanish wines to many people mean either those big fullbodied red Riojas and Ribera del Dueros that are great if you’re having a hearty meal centred around rich meats or sharp Galician whites that demand freshly caught seafood. That’s changing partly because most of us no longer eat the way our grandparents did. A winemaker near Pesquera, in Ribera, told me that red Crianzas have grown in popularity in recent years because young, urban wine drinkers eating lighter foods demand an aged Rioja red without the heaviness of Reserva or Gran Reserva wines. Crianzas

are oaked just one year, versus up to several years for the others.

RIOJA LEADS THE WAY Rioia is now leading the charge for whites that match the foods we are eating today, although these wines still account for less than 10% of the region’s wine. Earlier this year the wine producers’ organisation opened a marketing campaign to promote more variety and new, younger-style wines, whites in particular. To make sense of them, it helps to realize that this one area alone has many white grapes: Viura is the most widely grown;

other officially approved ones are Malvasía, Garnacha Blanca, Tempranillo Blanco, Maturana Blanca, Turrentés and Verdéjo, in addition to what are known as international grapes because they are grown worldwide (Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc). Do look for single grape wines, be brave and try some unfamiliar ones. David Schwarzwälder, one of the world’s top Rioja specialists, says that the change to more interesting whites began in 2016, so we are just now starting to see these bottles on shelves. And yes, changing tastes are behind the new wines. “We’re seeing consumers looking for more information on producers. We’ll be

Catalonia planting whites traditionally mean sweet and a bit heavy, has “garage” wines from new, young producers who offer a bigger range of whites – look for new-style wines from Randa and Mijas. It’s paying off. Rioja carried home 117 medals from the highly regarded Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2018, the third world region for number of medals. Raül Bobet Encus

HOT NEW WINEMAKERS Look for wines from Envínate, a company that consists of a small group of mobile winemakers who were wine school friends. They make wines in Extremadura, Almansa, Galicia and some remarkable ones in Tenerife. They are just getting started in Montilla.

seeing more village wines, single grape [as opposed to blends] wines, wines from manual harvests and single vineyards. And officials are backing these changes – they see it as a way of communicating more about the region’s wines.” Big producers are getting the message and broadening their range of whites, too.

BORN-AGAIN WINE REGIONS It isn’t just Rioja that is bringing us new and more interesting white wines. Catalonia, famous for the past 30 years for Prioratstyle reds, and Galicia with its seaside wines are expanding their offers. Even Andalusia, where Malagà

Jorge Monzón’s Dominio del Aguila is a funky independent winery in Ribera del Duero which makes wines unlike others you find there. He does curious things like complanting different grape varieties in the same patch of vineyard, an old village practice that fell out of fashion years ago. Monzón has shown you can get beautiful wines this way. In Catalonia and Basque country Raül Bobet of Castell d’Encus is making superb if expensive, hand-crafted wines that are eye openers. He was a top manager at Spain’s wine giant Torres for years before he decided to create his own line of wines that show Spain’s true potential. Tip: wine tourism everywhere is now focusing on mixing sport and wine – why not head up to Catalonia in October for the popular wine walk/race through the vineyards sponsored by world-class winery Mas Doix, followed by a great meal and chance to sample some of their creative new wines.
