UNESCO BUILDINGS

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT IS WIDELY RECOGNISED AS THE ARCHITECT THAT CREATED A DISTINCTLY AMERICAN STYLE, PREDOMINANTLY IN RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES. SUCH IS HIS LEGACY THAT NO FEWER THAN 10 OF HIS BUILDINGS HAVE BEEN NOMINATED BY THE FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT BUILDING CONSERVANCY ORGANISATION TO THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE FOUNDATION AS WORTHY OF BEING LISTED AS A HERITAGE SITES.

UTOPIA - 8

The conservationists nominated the following 10 buildings by Wright because of their intrinsic architectural merits and because they want to elevate his status as an architect and encourage tourism to the areas where they are.

The buildings selected represent a cross-section of the architect’s work and if selected will represent a startling shift on the part of UNESCO, which typically favours more historical buildings. The conservationists nominated the following 10 buildings by Wright because of their intrinsic architectural merits and because they want to elevate his status as an architect and encourage tourism to the areas where they are located.

2. Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum New York City 1956-1959 “I can see a tall building of a new type perfectly appropriate to our purpose, having monumental dignity and great beauty. The building Wright envisioned, which opened in 1959, is now seen by many as his masterpiece.

2

1. The Robie House, Chicago 1908 This is one of the first nominations representing 20th century architecture. Its merits are base don the fact that it shows the ways in which Wright redefined the nature of architecture.

1 UTOPIA - 9

3. Herbert and Katherine Jacobs House, Madison, Wisconsin 1936 Usonia—a name derived from “United States of North America”—was the term Wright coined to describe his vision for a new affordable architecture that freed itself from European conventions and responded to the American landscape. Wright’s Usonian houses related directly to the earth, unimpeded by a foundation, front porch, protruding chimney, or distracting shrubbery. Glass curtain walls and natural materials like wood, stone and brick further tied the house to its environment. The Herbert Jacobs House became the prototype home for Wright’s dream vision for a utopian urban development, Broadacre City. The house’s open arrangement of living room, dining room and kitchen was also later adopted in the ranch style houses that populated post-war American suburbs, underscoring the building’s historical significance.

3

The harmony of the building’s strikingly geometric architecture and decorative elements exemplifies Wright’s theory of organic design. 4. Unity Temple, Oak Park Illinois 1905 Unity Temple (1905-08) represents a defining moment in Frank Lloyd Wright’s early career. Designed in Wright’s Oak Park Studio for his own Unitarian congregation, it is one of the first public buildings in America to feature exposed concrete and is Wright’s greatest public building of his Prairie era. The harmony of the building’s strikingly geometric architecture and decorative elements exemplifies Wright’s theory of organic design. Unity Temple announced a new era of innovation in modern architecture.

UTOPIA - 10

4

5 5. Fallingwater, Bear Run, Pennsylvania 1935 – 1937 An extraordinary house that redefined the relationship between man, architecture and nature. The waterfall had been the family’s retreat for fifteen years and when they commissioned Wright to design the house they envisioned one across from the waterfall, so that they could have it in their view. Instead, Wright integrated the design of the house with the waterfall itself, placing it right on top of it to make it a part of the Kaufmanns’ lives.

6. Taliesin, Spring Green Wisconsin 1911 The home and estate of Frank Lloyd Wright in Wisconsin is an epicentre for anyone interested in the architect’s work. Taliesin was not only a home to Wright, it was a place in which he could constantly experiment, both with the building and with the land and he made over 200 changes during his lifetime.

8. Price Tower, Bartlesville Oklahoma 1952-1956 This innovative tower changed the Oklahoma skyline and is now an arts centre. The tower was built for Harold C. Price as a corporate headquarters for his pipeline construction company.

7. Taliesin West, Scottsdale Arizona 1938 Wright’s beloved winter home and the bustling headquarters of the Taliesin Fellowship, was established in 1937 and diligently handcrafted over many years into a world unto itself. Deeply connected to the desert from which it was forged, Taliesin West possesses an almost prehistoric grandeur. It was built and maintained almost entirely by Wright and his apprentices, making it among the most personal of the architect’s creations.

6

Mr. Price had originally thought of a rather modest rectangular building a few stories high, however Frank Lloyd Wright convinced him that it would be more economic and efficient to build up rather than out.

7

8

UTOPIA - 11

9. Hollyhock House, Los Angeles 1919-1921 Hollyhock House is Frank Lloyd Wright’s first Los Angeles project. Built between 1919 and 1921, it represents his earliest efforts to develop a regionally appropriate style of architecture for Southern California. Wright himself referred to it as California Romanza, using a musical term meaning “freedom to make one’s own form”.Taking advantage of Los Angeles’ dry, temperate climate, Hollyhock House is a remarkable combination of house and gardens. In addition to the central garden court, each major interior space adjoins an equivalent exterior space, connected either by glass doors, a porch, pergola or colonnade. A series of rooftop terraces further extend the living space and provide magnificent views of the Los Angeles basin and the Hollywood Hills.

10

9

10. Marin County Civic Center, San Rafael California 1957-1966 The Marin County Civic Center was Frank Lloyd Wright’s last commission and largest public project, including several civic functions that would serve Marin County and San Francisco, which after the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge became closer than ever. Wright was selected for the project in 1957, winning a vote out of hope he would be able to best represent a democratic government open to the people through the Civic Center. One of the most outstanding qualities of the project is that Wright didn’t stop at the architecture - he went on to design the door, the signs, furniture, and every last detail.

POSH, SHARP, GLAMOUROUS – THIS IS HOW WE COULD DESCRIBE THE STYLISH AND FRESH INTERIOR DESIGN CREATION BY EKATERINA LASHMANOVA FOR THIS RESIDENTIAL APARTMENT FOR A YOUNG FAMILY. UTOPIA - 17

Ekaterina had a free pass to open the doors of the place and spend some time bringing to life the most tasteful trends. She designed more than an apartment – she created an inspiring and iconic place to live in. From the high-ceiling to the details of the curtains, everything is custom made and conceived by artisans in a constant search for singularity and perfection. Behind the inspiration of the talented Russian interior designer is a profound admiration for Portuguese design, and Boca do Lobo played a main role as a leading pioneer of product design made to break aesthetic boundaries and bring handcrafted artistic pieces into people’s day-to-day life.

Behind the inspiration of the talented Russian interior designer is a profound admiration for Portuguese design, and Boca do Lobo played a main role as a leading pioneer of product design made to break aesthetic boundaries and bring handcrafted artistic pieces into people’s day-to-day life.

The living room has grand ceilings and large windows, which the designers used to their advantage. The classical accents, using a fresh colour palette, are highlighted by the Wave centre table, with its gold hammered finish and contemporary lines. Taking centre stage, the creation by Boca do Lobo brings sophistication and an unexpectedly contemporary vibe to the room. Blue hues and sensuous creams pair perfectly with the graphic flooring and the subtle gold accents in the lighting that extends throughout the apartment.

The bedroom’s pale touches and richness screams comfort and elegance in one of the apartment’s most important rooms. The glamorous bathroom has a funky style, with its bold pink panels and the art nouveau gold mirror. Black accents, like the big indoor frames, give a posh touch to keep the majestic apartment modern and luxurious.

She designed more than an apartment – she created an inspiring and iconic place to live in.

WAVE CENTRE TABLE by BOCA DO LOBO True classics never fail to make an impression and this is certainly the case for the Wave Table from Boca do Lobo. Nowadays, the traditional coffee table is no longer the only way to decorate the living room; recently coffee tables are taking original shapes and designs that give the living room a totally unique look through unusual forms and new materials. Wave is an original and a stylish coffee table for the modern living room and it is also an unconventional centre table for your sitting room. With

great style and elegance it creates an exclusive ambiance for the modern interiors. Developed by a Portuguese jewellery artisan, this piece is made of hand hammered gold brass with a black mirror top. bocadolobo.com

If the pictures alone aren’t enough to convince you, check out the main benefits of artificial grass:

Lower Maintenance

Artificial grass does not require any watering, mowing, or fertilising meaning lower water bills and more time spent relaxing and enjoying your garden than taking care of it!

UTOPIA - 32

Safety First

GRASSify artificial grass is safe for children and for pets, plus it is hypoallergenic, so anyone with allergies, especially those that are sensitive to grass, can still enjoy sunny days in the garden without the concern of any nasty reactions. Also artificial grass requires no pesticides so you can rest assured you will not be exposed to nasty chemicals, making your garden a safe zone.

Long Lasting

No more brown patches! Artificial grass will remain lush and green 365 days per year. It is UV stabilised to minimise fading and constructed with drainage so it dries out quickly when exposed to rain or light watering. Your artificial lawn will appear immaculate all year round, for many years to come.

Easy to Clean

Plus if you have pets artificial grass is easy to clean… When your dog needs to go, he needs to go… Artificial grass makes cleaning up any mess quick and easy. With no soil for waste to mix with, accidents simply sit on top of the lawn ready for you to clean up in one simple scoop. GRASSify customers in Marbella will realise the savings they make quite quickly as they will no longer have to water their lawns during the hot summer months and because they use UV stabilised artificial grass, their lawn will not fade, not even in the enduring Mediterranean sun therefore offering you beautiful, green grass all year round!

BEFORE GRASSify recently GRASSified the garden of Utopia’s Creative Director, Constanza:

GRASSIFY IN ACTION

AFTER

“It took us months to decide to get artificial grass.. we weren’t sure it would look good, or withstand the growth of weeds and the rain. After much consideration we decided it wasn’t wise to purchase the grass ourselves and try to lay it. I would not recommend this to anyone. The GRASSify crew came in, were absolute straight forward, relentless in the schedules and impecable in their finish. This is no job for unskilled men. Let GRASSify do it for you. We couldn’t be more thrilled!”

GRASSify are also extremely experienced in commercial properties and sports pitches, with one of their most recent projects being the Star Sixes at London’s O2 this summer. In addition they have created many home putting greens and 5-aside pitches both in London and Spain. 10 CANADIAN ARCHITECTS UNTIL RECENTLY CANADA HAS TENDED TO BE OVERLOOKED. YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO FIND THAT THIS ENORMOUS COUNTRY HAS PRODUCED A WEALTH OF ARCHITECTURAL TALENT, YET THE APPLAUSE ALWAYS SEEMS TO GO TO CANADA’S NEIGHBOUR, THE USA. WITHOUT DOUBT, CANADA’S PREMIER JUSTIN TRUDEAU HAS BROUGHT THE WORLD’S ATTENTION TO A COUNTRY THAT WAS SEEN BY MANY AS AN ‘ALSO RAN’ COMPARED TO THE UNITED STATES; NOW THE TIDE HAS TURNED AND CANADA IS LOOKING LIKE THE MUCH SMARTER OF THE TWO NORTH AMERICAN COUNTRIES. THERE WILL BE NAMES IN THIS LIST THAT WILL MAKE YOU EXCLAIM: “I ALWAYS THOUGHT HE WAS AMERICAN!” SO, WITH THE HELP OF BUZZBUZZNEWS, HERE ARE 10 LEGENDS OF CANADIAN ARCHITECTURE.

UTOPIA - 54

1

Frank Gehry Yes, he is Canadian. We must stop calling him ‘American’. The confusion originate sin the fact that he opened his first studio in LA in 1962. But, the starchitect who has done as much for North American architecture as Frank Lloyd Wright is actually from Toronto. His Art Gallery of Ontario showcases his style, as does his Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

Moshe Safdie Best known for Habitat 67, which he designed in 1967 and it is located in Montreal. Although it was the Canadian Pavilion for the World Exposition of 1967, Habitat 67 was originally intended as an experimental solution for high-quality housing in dense urban environments. Safdie explored the possibilities of prefabricated modular units to reduce housing costs and allow for a new housing typology that could integrate the qualities of a suburban home into an urban high-rise.

3

Bing Thom This Chinese Canadian architect who grew up in Vancouver was best known for his public buildings. Although he died in 2016, his firm continues his work and specialises in urban planning and complex building types such as civic buildings, performing arts centres and public spaces. Typically projects are mixed-use, integrating commercial, residential and cultural uses to create a sustainable whole. One of his bestknown buildings is the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts in Vancouver.

Although he was born in the USA, he spent several decades in Canada, which is why he is regarded as a CanadianAmerican architect. “It is impossible to reflect on Toronto architecture without thinking of Barton,” says Bruce Kuwabara, who has emerged as a dominant figure in the city. “No one was happy to see him leave, but he saw greater opportunities in the U.S.”

The young design team comprising Donald Chong and Betsy and Shane Williamson has already picked up 15 prestigious awards including the 2014 Emerging Voices Award from the Architectural League. CITY

Stories

SINCE PREHISTORY, MAN HAS BEEN PRODUCING OBJECTS, BUILDINGS, IMAGES. EACH CULTURE HAS ITS OWN RELATIONSHIP WITH THE OBJECTS, WHICH MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO SEPARATE ART AND DESIGN. FROM THIS PREMISE, BAT EYE ® HAS BEEN DRAWING AND SCULPTING PIECES THAT CAN BE SEEN AS ART AND DESIGN PIECES. THIS SYMBIOSIS CAN ONLY WORK WITH THE BEST ARTISANS, A FACT THAT CAN BE PERCEIVED IN THE PERFECTION AND BOLDNESS OF OUR COLLECTION. THE NOBLEST MATERIALS ARE PRESENT IN EACH PIECE, CAREFULLY SELECTED AND WORKED DOWN TO THE SMALLEST DETAIL. Bat eye ® has in its genesis a creative, Marco Sousa, who following his graduation and after years of dedication to architecture and passion for cities, felt the need to create furniture that caught in the elements of convergence between art and architecture, transcribing for furniture the forms, movements, gestures and colours that he kept with his eyes. Cities tell stories: we heard them and seize them; we interpret them and recreate that distinct and personal vision. The city conveys life in every corner, in every street that goes unnoticed, even in places where people least expect it.

The Porto Collection

Porto, the hometown of Marco Sousa, is the starting point of this collection.’ Also, it’s a port of departure, from those who see the city for a long time and now have decided to review it in these pieces and give it the deserved honor. There, we see the Douro river that reflects us, there we see the D.Luiz I bridge linking the two banks, there are colours, gestures and the light of those who know their city by heart.

‘Arc‘

Arc is a singular piecework crafted by the hand of the artisan, with an interior carefully designed and finished in satin wood; the metal joining the margins is now the support base. They leave aside the characteristic monochrome of the Porto collection to dress up the piece with hand painted tiles.

Soul

THE

OF A CIVILISATION IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO TALK ABOUT CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE WITHOUT DISCUSSING LE CORBUSIER OR FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT. THE LATTER WAS BORN IN WISCONSIN IN 1867 AND DIED IN PHOENIX, ARIZONA IN 1959 AND IS THE ORIGINATOR OF A UNIQUELY AMERICAN ARCHITECTURAL STYLE. DURING HIS LIFETIME HE DESIGNED SOME OF THE MOST SPECTACULAR RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES, AND THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE TODAY WHO WOULD LOVE TO OWN AN ORIGINAL FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT HOUSE. Of course, like many other architects, he also created some corporate buildings, such as the Johnson Wax HQ in Wisconsin, who obviously decided using a local boy was the right thing to do. Others included the Price Tower in Oklahoma, the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo and The Rookery Building in Chicago’s financial district, which is classed as an historic landmark building. His catalogue of works show just how he changed the way we build and live. Designing 1,114 architectural works of all types — 532 of which were realised — he created some of the most innovative spaces in the United States. And with a career that spanned seven decades, Wright’s visionary work has unsurprisingly cemented his place as the American Institute of Architects’ “greatest American architect of all time.” EARLY LIFE Frank Lloyd Wright was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin on June 8, 1867, the son of William Carey Wright, a preacher and a musician, and Anna Lloyd Jones, a teacher whose large Welsh family had settled in the state. His early years were fairly nomadic as his father travelled extensively for his ministry before the family settled in Madison, Wis. His parents divorced in 1885 and 18-yearold Frank worked for the dean of the University of Wisconsin’s department of engineering while also studying at the university, in order to help with the family finances. However, he always wanted to be an architect, so he moved to Chicago where he was eventually hired by the prestigious firm of Adler and Sullivan. FIRST HOME DESIGNS He married Catherine Lee Tobin in 1889 when he was 22. He was very keen to build his own house and he negotiated a five-year contract with Louis Sullivan (of Adler & Sullivan) in exchange for a loan to build a home for him and his wife. He purchased a wooded corner plot in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park and built his first house, a modest residence reminiscent of the East Coast shingle style with its prominent roof gable. It reflected Wright’s ingenuity as he experimented with geometric shapes and volumes in the studio and playroom he later added for his six children.

“The mother art is architecture. Without an architecture of our own we have no soul of our own civilization.” – Frank Lloyd Wright

He was known for his love of beautiful things, and for not always having the money to match his tastes. As a result he started taking private commissions for residential properties outside of his work with Adler & Sullivan. Unfortunately, his employer saw it as ‘moonlighting’ and fired him for breach of contract. In some ways this was a blessing for Wright, as it gave him the opportunity to strike out alone. ESTABLISHING THE PRAIRIE STYLE The William H. Winslow House was Wright’s first independent commission. Although it is conservative compared with later works it nonetheless attracted local attention. Wright was determined to create an indigenous American architecture and over the next sixteen years he set the standards for what became known as the Prairie Style. These houses reflected the long, low horizontal prairie on which they sat with lowpitched roofs, deep overhangs, no attics or basements, and generally long rows of casement windows that further emphasized the horizontal theme. Some of Wright’s most important residential works of the this era are the Darwin D. Martin House in Buffalo, New York (1903), the Avery Coonley House in Riverside, Illinois (1907), and the Frederick C. Robie House in Chicago (1908). Important public commissions included the Larkin Company Administration Building in Buffalo (1903, demolished 1950) and Unity Temple in Oak Park (1905).

A EUROPEAN ADVENTURE In 1909, Wright decided to take a break and leaving his family behind, ventured across the Atlantic where he stayed with one of his clients, Mamah Borthwick., who he had been in love with for some time. During this European hiatus Wright worked on two publications of his work, published by Ernst Wasmuth in 1911. These publications brought international recognition to his work and greatly influenced other architects. Frank and Mamah returned to the USA the same year, and because they were shunned by Chicago’s social circles, Wright began work on Taliesin, a home for him and Mamah, in Spring Green Wisconsin, his Welsh mother’s hometown. He also resumed his architectural practice and over the next several years received two important public commissions: the first in 1913 for an entertainment centre called Midway Gardens in Chicago; the second, in 1916, for the new Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Japan. TALIESIN Taliesin was the centre of Wright’s life, but tragedy struck in 1914 when Mamah and her two children plus some employees were killed in a brutal arson attack on the house and offices. Wright did eventually rebuild Taliesin in Mamah’s memory and it eventually became the base for Wright’s School of Architecture and his Taliesin Foundation.

MORE MONEY PROBLEMS The years between 1922 and 1934 were both architecturally creative and financially catastrophic. Wright established an office in Los Angeles, but following his return from a trip to Japan in 1922 commissions were scarce, with the exception of the four textile block houses of 1923–1924 (Millard, Storer, Freeman and Ennis). As a result he soon abandoned the West Coast and returned to Taliesin. While only a few projects went into construction, this decade was one of great design innovation for Wright.

He remarried in 1928 to Olga Lazovich, who turned out to be a stabilising influence and who got him to focus on his architecture again. He also wrote more and published An Autobiography and The Disappearing City in 1932. The first received widespread critical acclaim and would continue to inspire generations of young architects. The second introduced Wright’s scheme for Broadacre City, a utopian vision for decentralisation that moved the city into the country. Although it received little serious consideration at the time, it would influence community development in unforeseen ways in the decades to come. In this period, Wright and his wife started the architectural school at Taliesin, the “Taliesin Fellowship,” an apprenticeship programme to provide a total learning environment, integrating not only architecture and construction, but also farming, gardening, and cooking, and the study of nature, music, art and dance. In 1934, they moved everything to Arizona, partly because Wisconsin winters proved so uncomfortable. Some thought that Wright’s time as an architect was over, but he came back in 1936 with several important commissions including the S.C. Johnson and Son Company Administration Building in Racine, Wisconsin; Fallingwater, the country house for Edgar Kaufmann in rural Pennsylvania; and the Herbert Jacobs House (the first built “Usonian” house) in Madison. Wright also moved the Taliesin Fellowship to Scottsdale Arizona on a permanent basis for the winter months, It was a bold new concept for desert living where he tested design innovations, structural ideas, and building details that responded to the dramatic desert setting. Wright and the fellowship established migration patterns between Wisconsin and Arizona, which the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture continues to this day. THE WAR YEARS AND AFTER In 1940, MOMA staged an exhibition of Wright’s work and in 1943 he received on of his greatest commissions; an invitation to design a building for the Solomon R. Guggenheim collection. This project took him 16 years to complete. When the war ended in 1945 Wright found that work started flooding back to his studio again. Completed public projects over the next decade included the Research Tower for the SC Johnson Company, a Unitarian meeting house in Madison, a skyscraper in Oklahoma, and several buildings for Florida Southern College. Wright opened his last decade with work on a large exhibition, Frank Lloyd Wright: Sixty Years of Living Architecture, which was soon on an international tour traveling to Florence, Paris, Zurich, Munich, Rotterdam, and Mexico City, before returning to the United States. Most impressively, he was still actively working on the Guggenheim construction right up until his death in April 1959, just a few weeks before his ninety-second birthday. Of his residential architectural styles Frank Lloyd Wright will be remembered for the Prairie Style and for the Usonian.

PRAIRIE STYLE Wright’s work from 1899 to 1910 belongs to what became known as the “Prairie Style.” With the “Prairie house”— a long, low, open plan structure that eschewed the typical high, straight-sided box in order to emphasise the horizontal line of the prairie and domesticity— Wright established the first truly American architecture. In a Prairie house, “the essential nature of the box could be eliminated,” Wright explained. Interior walls were minimized to emphasise openness and community. “The relationship of inhabitants to the outside became more intimate; landscape and building became one, more harmonious; and instead of a separate thing set up independently of landscape and site, the building with landscape and site became inevitably one.”

USONIAN Responding to the financial crisis of 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression that gripped the United States and the rest of the world, Wright began working on affordable housing, which developed into the Usonian house. Wright’s Usonians were a simplified approach to residential construction that reflected both economic realities and changing social trends. In the Usonian houses, Wright offered a simplified, but beautiful environment that Americans could both afford and enjoy. Wright continued to design Usonian houses for the rest of his career, with variations reflecting the diverse client budgets.
