The Architecture of

power

Moscow State University

ARCHITECTURE HAS SINCE ITS EARLIEST BEGINNINGS BEEN A MEANS OF CULTURAL EXPRESSION AND OF EXPRESSING POWER. THE BUILDING THAT EMBODIES A NATION’S, A CITY’S OR AN INDIVIDUAL’S IDEA OF THE POWER THEY HOLD MUST MAKE IT MANIFEST. IT’S AN ABSTRACT IDEA TRANSLATED INTO A THREE-DIMENSIONAL FORM. THE PLACE WHERE THE BUILDING IS LOCATED ALSO BECOMES SYMBOLIC AND ONE ONLY HAS TO LOOK AT GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS, ALONGSIDE MEDIEVAL CASTLES AND GRAND, PRIVATE ESTATES TO SEE HOW PLACE AND FORM WORK TOGETHER TO IMPRESS AND INTIMIDATE. UTOPIA - 14

Architecture is one of the languages through which we perceive the culture and society of a particular era. Buildings are often built as a result of proactive policymaking that seeks to endow a city with facilities, especially cultural ones, and by thereby leave a tangible trace of a government or a personality for future generations. Take a look at France during the 1970s and 1980s with examples like the Centre Georges Pompidou designed by Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano. Its construction was part of renewing Paris as leading city of culture and art.

“For Hitler – no less than for his contemporaries, Mies and Gropius – architecture was an expression of the central spirit of an epoch, possessing some eternal magical power that could lead men from confusion and chaos into the serene realm of Order.”

And, for example, the “great public works projects,” a series of monuments constructed during François Mitterrand’s presidency, are more than just a reflection of France’s cultural policies in the 1980s; they also project an image of a “builder president,” who once wrote: “I feel in every city as if I am the emperor or an architect. I resolve, I decide, and I judge.” But, architecture can also be used to represent an ideology. Albert Speer’s design for the “ideal capital” of the Third Reich, and Stalin’s skyscrapers, the “Seven

Embassies as messages of power Embassies are another way of conveying national identity, but they also need to be buildings people can work in. The architect has to seriously consider a marriage of form and function. Furthermore, as the embassy is in another country, there is that country’s culture to consider. As Teuta Jashari-Kajtazi writes in “Architecture as Political expression”: “A part of the design is to understand the background showing the respect for the culture representing the particular nation never leaving behind the local building tradition, cooperation with local culture and architecture. At their best, embassies should set the tone for smooth engagement of two cultures.”

Sisters of Moscow,” both embody the ideologies of two 20th century totalitarian governments that appropriated architecture as a language which used space to create and embody a new world order.

Jonathan Glancey a known author in the field of architecture and design, wrote in the Guardian on the topic of architectural diplomacy, said: “An embassy building is an ambassador for the country it represents. Ideally, it should be gracious, well mannered and welcoming. It should offer something of the culture of its home country while nodding appreciatively to that of its host. It does not need either to be oldfashioned, nor should it attempt to be “cool”. Passing fads are just that”.

UTOPIA - 15

The Nordic Countries Embassies in Berlin The architecture of the Nordic Embassies in Berlin offers a very interesting approach to the national-political building space, because Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland opted to build their embassies within one complex. Each country has its own building, but they share the common reception area and the information centre known as “Felleshuset” or “House for All.” The concept suggests a striving towards unity, with none of the countries wanting to dominate its neighbours. The design is by the Austrian – Finnish partnership of Alfred Berger and Tiina Parkkinen, and looking at the geometry of the complex from above, it looks as if the buildings have been carved from a single block. Another detail that creates a Scandinavian/ Nordic impression, and references the water connection between these countries, are the low-lying pools touching all five embassies while the unifying element of the entire complex is the characteristic wall as a copper strip made of louvers. It is important to mention that all materials used for construction, are typical of the Nordic region. Also keeping in mind the fact that the ideal ‘binding’ for natural stone, wood and glass is stainless steel, which is mainly used for joints, mounting and framing on the buildings’ different facades. This combination gives a very calm and friendly atmosphere in the entire complex. It is clear that the main scope of the design is to express the Nordic spirit through both exterior and interior shapes as well as construction materials used. Furthermore, the so called “Bright and Light, Scandinavian style” is characterized by clear compositions, a blue-green glass effect, exposed grey concrete, warm wood tones, shimmering stainless steel and a plain interior with simple furniture and fittings. What in fact they have tried to show within this complex, and expressed through architecture, is that the environment and nature conservation are very important characteristics of the Nordic countries.

UTOPIA - 16

Contrast this approach with that of the design of the United State’s embassy in Baghdad and you’ll notice the difference. The 104-acre compound — already the United State’s biggest and most expensive in the world at a price of $700 million -- is a study in the use of architecture to subjugate people. It’s the exact opposite of the Nordic embassies in Berlin. Next time you walk past an embassy, or have to visit one, take a good look at where it is located and its architecture; it will tell you something about that country and where it sees itself in terms of its power and influence in the world.

The Laidback Luxury Lifestyle of La Reserva de Sotogrande

DISCOVER A WHOLE NEW LIFESTYLE OF LAIDBACK LUXURY AND LEISURE RIGHT IN THE HEART OF SOTOGRANDE. LA RESERVA DE SOTOGRANDE IS SET TO BECOME ONE OF EUROPE’S FINEST MEMBERS’ CLUBS WITH A SOPHISTICATED SELECTION OF LEISURE ACTIVITIES AND SERVICES AS WELL AS AN EXQUISITE PORTFOLIO OF RESIDENCES. Teeing off Set high on the escarpment overlooking a cobalt sea, La Reserva Club de Sotogrande is already a thriving golf club and a favourite social spot amongst locals. Designed by Cabell B Robinson, the 18-hole championship course is a must-play for any golfer visiting Southern Spain. Part of the World of Leading Golf network, the golf club has recently appointed Ryder Cup champion Manuel Piñero as the resident professional to enhance and grow member services on the ground. Widely regarded as the most beautiful of Sotogrande´s courses, La Reserva is quickly becoming the preferred destination for important golfing events and currently hosts an annual programme of international tournaments.

Architectural mastery The apex of La Reserva’ s property portfolio will be a world-first collection of seven extraordinary villas. On private one-hectare plots, each one has been specifically designed by an internationally renowned architect, coming from Brazil to southern and northern Europe, to complement the incredible scenery that surrounds it. These will be homes like no other in the world, appealing to people who dream of a distinctive style and ‘one-of-a-kind’ architecture. These villas combine exceptional living and entertaining spaces, extensive leisure facilities, screening rooms and spa, swimming pools and terraces, garaging and staff quarters. Their design blends in with the natural materials of the land and responds to the passage of the sun through the course of the day.

More than just a Clubhouse Serviced by the recently renovated clubhouse, golfers at La Reserva Club can finish play by taking their place among the lively ambience and culinary delights of the Club’s restaurant.

Privacy, exclusivity and community Scattered among the hills and enclaves, the villas here will be homes for living and spaces for families with comfort at their very core. Private and secure within gated areas of parkland, the properties will be contemporary masterpieces that allow the surrounding scenery to unfold around them. Landscaping therefore leads the vision for this project and Jean Mus, France’s highly decorated architecte paysagiste who created the gardens at the Ritz Paris and Palais de Monaco, has been appointed to design the natural areas, marrying the ancient landscape to his signature Provençal style. UTOPIA - 20

The ever-changing menu combines Catalan, Basque and Spanish influences, with new menus designed by Jaime Perez, who trained under El Bulli’s Ferran Adrià. With a local, convivial style, the restaurant offers a unique experience of the finest Andalucian dining. The perfect spot to sit outside in the summertime and enjoy a relaxed meal ‘al fresco’, guests can also listen to live music on Friday and Saturday during the summer.

La Reserva Beach experience La Reserva´s Beach is the ‘first of its kind’, sandy-bottomed lagoon in Europe, and the third largest one in the world. La Reserva has, in effect, brought the beach to the mountains with this superb inland lagoon, and its unique sandy bottom feature offers a genuine beachside experience. It is rightly able ot boast of being the first inland beach club and restaurant. The facility is set up to offer each family member the right place to enjoy their free time, from the adult only pool to the beach set for kids. La Reserva´s Beach is the ultimate place to socialise with a real sense of community. There is also a sensational sports lagoon with a boat house and plenty of watersports and activities to enjoy.

Life with a view Another of La Reserva’s private communities is El Mirador, six sophisticated and contemporary villas with awe-inspiring views from their vantage point up high in the hills. Two have already sold at prices that were unseen for this region. Designed by respected Andalucian practice, ARK, the four- to nine-bedroom villas balance modern architecture with indigenous inspirations and include such facilities as indoor and outdoor swimming pools, steam rooms, media rooms and wine cellars, extensive entertaining spaces and landscaped gardens, plus staff accommodation and garaging.

Boasting incredible scenery, worldclass facilities, leisure and sporting activities and entertainment, plus some of the most spectacular architecture showcased by its private residences, La Reserva offers the ultimate barefoot luxury lifestyle. lareservaclubsotogrande.com

Townhouse in Sweden This contemporary townhouse has been built between two rustic houses and conforms to the pure white and clean lines we associate with the Nordic-style home. It was designed by the architects Elding Oscarson for art lovers who wanted elegance and simplicity plus light.

DANISH DESIGN DENMARK HAS HAD AN ENVIABLE REPUTATION FOR DESIGN FOR A LONG TIME AND THAT EXTENDS TO ITS ARCHITECTURE. ITS PUBLIC, AND SOME PRIVATE, BUILDINGS ALWAYS AIM TO MAKE A STATEMENT AND CAN TEND TO DIVIDE OPINION, BUT REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU FIND THEM AESTHETICALLY PLEASING OR NOT, THESE EXAMPLES OF DANISH ARCHITECTURE ARE BOTH CUTTING-EDGE AND FUNCTIONAL AT THE SAME TIME, AND THESE TWO QUALITIES ARE WHAT SETS IT APART.

UTOPIA - 58

BLOX Only opened in May 2018, this massive building on Copenhagen’s harbour front contains a collection of creative and cultural institutions. It may remind you of Lego (one of Denmark’s most famous exports to the world), and it is the new home of the Danish Architecture Centre’s exhibitions, lectures, workshops and bookshop. It is also the connecting link for a number of new bridge connections, which are being constructed across and along the harbour with the aim of bringing the city and harbour area closer together. Designed by the internationally renowned team at OMA.

COPENHAGEN OPERA HOUSE Sydney may think it has the ultimate in opera houses from a design perspective, but Copenhagen’s opera house, built 10 years ago has become a city icon. The Royal Danish Opera was given as a donation to Denmark by the A.P. Møller and Chastine McKinney Møller Foundation and was designed by Henning Larsen Architects. A number of Danish artists have contributed to the decor, among them Per Kirkeby who has created four bronze reliefs, and Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson who has contributed the three light sculptures for the foyer.

UTOPIA - 59

THE WAVE You’ll need to cross the Vejle Fjord to see The Wave (in Danish it is called Bølgen) sitting on the shoreline. This residential complex is another design from Henning Larsen Architects and has won numerous awards. The exclusive and very distinctive building consists of five tile-clad, rolling ‘waves’, each reaching nine storeys and offering 20 individual apartments, the largest of which are the top-floor apartments measuring 240 square metres.

THE BLUE PLANET The Blue Planet, designed by 3XN, is the largest aquarium in Northern Europe and is located just 8km south of Copenhagen. It seems to bring together the sea and sky and its shape is based on whirlpools.

UTOPIA - 60

UTZON CENTRE This cultural centre in Aalborg was the work of the great Danish architect Jørn Utzon and his son Kim and celebrates the father’s contribution to Danish design. Jørn Utzon was born and raised in Aalborg and coincidentally, he also happened to be the architect of Sydney Opera House.

RADISSON BLU ROYAL HOTEL Opened in 1960, the hotel was designed from top to bottom by one of the most famous names in Danish architecture, Arne Jacobsen, which is what makes it so special. It’s located in central Copenhagen just opposite Tivoli close to Strøget and the city centre.

UTOPIA - 61

ORDRUPGAARD With a new extension designed by Iraqi-British architect, Dame Zaha Hadid, this modern art museum set in woodlands north of Copenhagen owes much of its drama to the setting and its connection with the surrounding forest. The extension, cast in black lava concrete, poses a contrast to the older architecture that complements the elegant early 20th century villa housing the original collection. The curved lines of the building blend in perfectly with the beautiful landscaped gardens.

THE ICEBERG (ISBERGJET) The dramatic Iceberg (Isbjerget) building on Aarhus’ waterfront is part of a wave of interest in and development of exciting architecture in Denmark’s second city. This is a residential apartment complex that provides optimum sea views, and the criss-cross points make the building bear a strong resemblance to floating icebergs breaking up. The building was designed by four architectural

UTOPIA - 62

firms, the Danish CEBRA and JDS Architects, French firm Louis Paillard and Dutch foirm SeARCH, and was funded by the Danish pension fund PensionDanmark

AROS ART MUSEUM Located in Aarhus, this cultural hub is easy to spot thanks to the stunning installation on its roof, titled “Your Rainbow Panorama, created by the artist Olafur Eliasson. The multi-coloured walkway offers a new perspective of the city and as an attraction it has been awarded two Michelin stars.

UTOPIA - 63

8 HOUSE (8 TALLET) One of Bjarke Ingels Group’s most recognisable projects in Denmark, the 8 House (8 Tallet) is a residential building in one of Copenhagen’s newest districts, Ørestad. The 8 House was the largest private development in Scandinavia when it was finished in 2010. 8TALLET’s fundamental ideas are room for free time and family life, community, and activity, and contain 476 homes divided into town houses, penthouse apartments with gardens to match, and regular apartments.

UTOPIA - 64

VM Mountain The prestigious VM MOUNTAIN in Ørestad City was also designed by architects Bjarke Ingels (BIG), JDS and Plot. It contains 80 residential units all with terrace decks and luxuriant roof gardens protruding from the building’s base. Terrace decks come complete with evergreen vegetation and an automatic sprinkler system designed to service the intermittently blooming perennials, not to

mention the view of Ørestad and East Amager. Even the car park is unusual with its 16 metre-tall dramatically coloured walls and the residential lift moving obliquely along the inner wall of the building. The VM MOUNTAIN was finished in 2008 and shortly after was awarded the world’s best residential building at the World Architecture Fair.

The Elephant House This building designed by famous British architect, Sir Norman Foster, is at Copenhagen zoo. Opened in 2008, Sir Norman Foster’s light and open building, designed in collaboration with Danish landscape architect Stig B. Andersson, is considered one of the best elephant facilities in the world. Here the animals can be seen at close quarters, for example, when they bathe in a water tomb, which is deep enough for the elephants to dive under so their entire bodies are covered. And who doesn’t love an elephant and believe they deserve a beautiful environment when they’ve been taken from their natural habitat. UTOPIA - 65

A New Way TO ENJOY THE

Heart Home OF THE

By Heidi Gubbins at Ambience Home Design

FINDING NEW WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOME FULLY FUNCTIONAL, TAILORED TO YOUR NEEDS AND YOUR DAYTO-DAY LIFE WHILST CREATING A DESIGN THAT REFLECTS YOUR STYLE IS WHAT WE STRIVE FOR AT AMBIENCE. In this issue we’d like to talk about the kitchen, and because it is undoubtedly “the heart of the home”, as they say, we are now very excited to announce our new partnership with Cesar Kitchens; a complete, innovative kitchen in which each part is in perfect harmony with, and completes, the other, while retaining its own unique functions and individuality.

UTOPIA - 70

Sometimes it’s about detaching from the more traditional layouts and getting in touch with a modular system that adapts and is more responsive to the way we use our space. In modern living, it’s not uncommon that one space is frequently used for various purposes, which is why it’s important to take into account the intended variety of functions and design with flexibility in mind.

We’d like to show you some of the novelties that have been shown at the fair and some of our favourite looks that can also make your kitchen a stylish place, which integrates harmoniously with the rest of your home.

UTOPIA - 71

We love the idea of wall paneling to help enhance a modern continuum between the walls and furniture. The use of good illuminination creates focus on the elements of choice and the understated design is both calming and a very elegant way to decorate your walls; a great alternative to the typical tiled up partitions we are so used to seeing.

“The Intarsio system has been designed to detract from the geometric shape of the doors, primarily using the direction of the wood grain to change the perception of their dimensions. This project makes a prized material even more precious by reinterpreting a kitchen with a traditional soul without looking back to the past nostalgically,” states Cesar Kitchen. “Experience in handicraft woodwork has made it possible to achieve the illusion of continuity, or interruptions even where these do not actually coincide with the position of the doors. The result is an optical illusion in which real interruptions are concealed in favour of the pace set by the design and by the creativity of individual projects.”

One of our favourites is the stunning island design that is smartly lined in beautiful marble, and where the doors and drawer fronts are also in the same material, collaborating to a luxurious finish in a contemporary style. The island exudes solidity, yet maintains an airy and “light feel in its design.

The 50s collection carries that Mid-Century flare and catches our eye with its playful use of materials, light and colour combinations. Its specific design makes it perfect for the dining and living areas of the home as well as serving as a link between them.

The interesting thing about these stunning kitchens is that you can combine their different lines and create your own unique look.

We hope you’ve enjoyed these latest collections as much as we have enjoyed sharing them with you.

UTOPIA - 78

“We are intent on creating memorable and unique moments for all our guests.”

LOCATED IN THE HEART OF ALOHA’S GOLF VALLEY, KAH MARBELLA IS THE NEWEST, INNOVATIVE AND EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN MARBELLA, BRINGING ENERGY, ENTHUSIASM AND SOPHISTICATION WHILE ALSO CREATING AN UNPARALLELED GASTRONOMIC AND LIFESTYLE EXPERIENCE. “We are intent on creating memorable and unique moments for all our guests.” To do this, KAH MARBELLA team has devised three different spaces combining luxurious surroundings with both fun and chilled settings, plus uplifting music and beautiful food. Open seven days a week and consisting of a climatised pool and Mediterranean restaurant, a kids club, a stylish DJ restaurant / nightclub

and an extensive terrace and garden. Furthermore, KAH MARBELLA opens its doors for customers all year round and aims to be the perfect setting for any occasion or special event. The style of the night time restaurant is a fusion of cultures. Stylish and jazzy with a touch of Britain’s colonial past and the exotic magic of countries of the East, most specifically of India. ‘New British’ style, as it is called in the interior design decoration sector, because it draws on the the British Colonial style of the Raj era in India. In the mid-nineteenth century, during the reign of Queen Victoria, India was no longer controlled by the British East Indian Company and was directly dependent on the British Parliament. It launched a series of measures, carried out by members of the so-called British Raj, to provide Indian society with an education, morality and distinctly British style designed to integrate its culture with that of local Indian society. This was reflected in a distinctive lifestyle, especially in the ‘Clubs’ frequented by British high society living in India. KAH MARBELLA’s ambition is to reflect that same magical atmosphere where east and west merge in a harmony of smells and flavours, and a kitchen specially designed to make it a Marbella landmark. kahmarbella.com

Architectural

LANDMARKS in Sweden

UTOPIA - 84

EVERY COUNTRY SEEKS TO HAVE BUILDINGS THAT SPEAK OF ITS WEALTH, ITS CULTURE, ITS POWER AND AMBITIONS, AND SWEDEN IS NO DIFFERENT IN THIS RESPECT. AS WITH OTHER NATIONS, SWEDEN DOESN’T ALWAYS CHOOSE NATIVE ARCHITECTS FOR ITS PUBLIC BUILDINGS; IT LOOKS FOR THE ARCHITECT WITH THE SIGNATURE STYLE THAT BEST REPRESENTS WHAT A COUNTRY, A COMPANY OR AN INSTITUTION WISHES TO SAY ABOUT ITSELF. THERE ARE ‘STATEMENT’ ITEMS IN FASHION, AND IN ARCHITECTURE, THERE ARE STATEMENT BUILDINGS.

Kiruna Kyrka It is not surprising that a church features as an outstanding piece of architecture, and Gustav Wickman designed this one in 1912. It is located in Swedish Lapland, which is fast becoming a popular travel destination for its ICE Hotel, the skiing and the opportunity to discover Sami culture. It is also the land of the midnight sun and the Aurora Borealis. The church has been voted Sweden’s “most beloved building of all time.” Due to extended mining in the Kiruna regions, which also featured in a TV drama series “Midnight Sun”, the church, which in style resembles a Laplander’s winter cot-tent and is painted a traditional Swedish red, is being dismantled piece by piece and will be reconstructed in a new location along with the rest of the city of Kiruna.

Malmö’s Turning Torso

The Electron Microscope

It is the world’s first twisted skyscraper and Sweden’s tallest building at 190m. Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The tower consists of nine cubes all twisting towards the waterfront of the New Western Harbour in Malmö. It is also within walking distance of both Ribersborg beach and the city centre, notably the university and business districts. The project formed an important part of the redevelopment of Malmö’s Western Harbour near the Öresund Bridge, which connects Sweden and Denmark, as fans of the television detective series, “The Bridge” will be aware of. The Turning Torso contains luxury residential apartments, offices and conference rooms and was completed in 2005.

This singular building by Tham & Videgård in 2011 houses Europe’s most precise electron microscope. It is an instrument so sensitive to vibrations, sounds and electromagnetic fields that it needs a building of its own, and one that is covered with titanium plates. It is located at the campus of Linköping University, where it certainly stands out form the rest of the buildings.

UTOPIA - 85

Nimis – a micronation of Ladonia Ok, this is an art installation, but it is simply too weird and wonderful to leave out. ‘Nimis’ means “too much” in Latin, and it’s the name of part of the selfproclaimed micronation of Ladonia, which has 17,000 citizens from more than 100 countries. It’s a controversial, site-specific installation started by Lars Vilks in 1980. Measuring 100 metres wide and with towers as high as 25 metres, it’s an impressive architectural playground. Viewers can climb into and enter the buildings made of driftwood, as well as admire them from the beach, the sea and the heights of the nature reserve of Kullaberg, in the northwest corner of county Skåne. After authorities discovered Wilks driftwood towers the legal battles began and have been going on since 2004. If you fancy a visit to this seaside location, you can find out more about Ladonia at ladonia.org.

Svettekörka in Gothenburg The name of this extraordinary building means ‘sweat church’, so perhaps you can guess what it is. Yes, it’s a sauna, but one that is unlike any other. It was one of the first buildings to appear in the redevelopment of Frihamnen in Gothenburg. This spectacular, yet unpretentious, small-scale landmark was

UTOPIA - 86

built using locally recycled material and locally sourced volunteers. Entry is free of charge and available to the public. The sauna is built in a basin that is part of the river Göta älv and presumably you dive straight into the river after working up a sweat. The architects were Jan Liesegang and Francesco Apuzzo from Berlin-based Raumlabor.

Restaurang Tusen Designed by Swedish firm Murman Arkitekter and built in 2008 in the familyowned ski resort of Ramundberget, which serves up local and Sami food, this restaurant won first prize in the World Architecture Festival (Holiday category) in 2009. Its sympathy with the surrounding landscape and environment is evident and it is constructed entirely from birch, the only tree that grows in this area. It’s only 20km form the Norwegian border and is about 750m above sea level. As a destination it’s perfect for skiing and mountain fishing.

The Öresundsbron It isn’t a building, but as dramatic example of building construction it is a breathtaking way to connect two countries. If you know nothing about this bridge, a first look at a photo will have you scratching your head. Surely, it seems to end without reaching another piece of land, you are likely to think. Its secret is that it begins, or ends, depending on which side you’re coming from by taking you from over eater to under water. The structure includes a tunnel and an artificial island and is the world’s longest cable-tied road and rail bridge. It was designed by COWI and finished in 1999. Unsurprisingly, it won the IABSE Outstanding Structure Award in 2002.

UTOPIA - 87

The ICE Hotel

Emporia shopping mall

The Icehotel won the TRIP Global Award in 2013 for ‘the best travel experience in Sweden and it is another ‘world first’ for the country. It is located in Jukkasjärvi, 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, and was founded in 1989. The really interesting thing about this hotel is that it is more or less recreated every year by a team of artists and ice experts who rebuild its rooms during an eight-week period in October-December every year. The hotel, which consists of 1,000 tons of ice and 30,000 m³ of snice (snow and ice), takes three months to melt and return to Mother Nature every spring. Now that really is amazing.

Another Malmö landmark and a very dramatic one. It looks as though the centre has been blasted out of it, and is part of an urban planning project – where offices, houses and retail come together in a mixed-use development integrated into the fabric of Malmö. Built by Swedish firm Windgårdhs in 2012, it won a World Architecture Festival award in 2013 and INSIDE and MIPIM awards shortly after. It certainly breaks with the traditional look of the shopping mall in its boldness.

The flower shop This construction in the brutalist style is clearly controversial as its concrete block look is about as distant from the structure of flowers as is possible. Designed by Sigurd Lewerentz in 1969 by the Eastern cemetery (Östra kyrkogården) in Malmö, is a much-debated icon of Swedish architecture. The renowned architect’s most scaled down and extreme building, mostly based on squares and golden sections, still attracts architecture buffs from all over the world. It’s the kind of architecture that is “Marmite” as the British might say – you either love it or hate it.
