The Gherkin as everyone calls it in London, and most likely further afield as well, has been a talking point since it became the new home of Swiss Re, a reinsurance company, although nobody is really bothered so much about who inhabits it – it is the building that is the talking point. Its correct name is 30 St. Mary Axe. With 41 floors, it is 180 metres (591 ft) tall and stands on the former sites of the Baltic Exchange and Chamber of Shipping, which were extensively damaged in 1992 by a bomb. A MINI GHERKIN OR A TULIP However, the Gherkin’s silhouette is now overshadowed by the increasing number of taller buildings surrounding it within the cramped confines of the City of London. But Norman Foster has a solution – and it is pretty surprising. He is proposing a structure that looks like a “cocktail cornichon on a stick.” A cocktail cornichon is one of those mini gherkins you may be served alongside olives in Spanish tapas bars. Foster plans for it to reach a height of 305.3 metres, which is twice the height of the Gherkin, and this would make it the tallest structure in the City, although it will be five metres short of reaching the Shard’s elevation, but then that is across the river, so doesn’t count, so to speak. The design has been dubbed ‘The Tulip’ and it’s easy to see why. It consists of a 12-storey glass bubble erected on top of a concrete stem, filled with bars, restaurants and a viewing gallery, along with a free educational facility, and it is hoped that the latter use will help to get it through the planning application. Safra Group is behind the proposal. It also bought the Gherkin in 2014. Safra is headed by Brazilian billionaire Joseph Safra, which also bought the Chiquita banana empire, shortly after his company purchased the Gherkin. Safra had asked Foster to convert the top floor of the Gherkin into a visitor attraction (something like the Shard offers perhaps?), however, the space was to tight, so Foster came UTOPIA - 15

up with his ‘Tulip’ idea for a freestanding building sitting alongside the original one. Guardian journalist and architecture critic, Oliver Wainwright, calls the plan “a parody of architectural hubris, a cloned miniature of his original icon, poking up above the skyline like the leggy tendril of a plant starved of light, desperately waving for attention.” DINING AT HEIGHT What it offers is a 12-storey dining space in the sky resting on “three protruding vertical “spoons”, in which vertiginous sky bridges will skirt the walls of plunging atria,” and with a transparent slide transporting visitors between floors. And the pièce de résistance will be the fact that each of the ‘spoons’ will be encircled by a rotating gondola ride. Here, visitors will sit in glass spheres and take a journey on an elliptical loop up and down the middle seven storeys. If you aren’t a fan of crazy fairground rides, you will probably want to avoid this. Those with a fear of heights have also been forewarned about what to expect. Whilst the building may be being referred to as ‘The Tulip”, it actually looks more like a giant coconut shy, or a space age egg cup. Wainwright suggests that it is one of the weirdest designs to ever come out of Foster’s office, and it’s hard to disagree with his analysis of what he calls a “surreal mashup” of the London Eye, the BT Tower and the ArcelorMittal Orbit. THE CITY’S APPROACH TO PLANNING It also speaks volumes about the City of London’s planning office, which takes an ad hoc approach to whatever is put in front of it. That is to say, there’s no real ‘plan’ involved. Instead it seems to have a rather vague idea of what the city should look like; “a cluster of tall buildings” as Wainwright suggests, seems to be about as far as it has got. Planning permission is decided on a case by case basis, and there is definitely a tendency to favour height that allows for tourists to have ‘experiences’ at the top, regardless of how it affects the ultimate shape of the skyline. The Tulip answers that need, but it is a curious concept, as there is no office space in the ‘stem’ of the building. It is a building in the heart of one of the world’s biggest financial centres that has no purpose other than to be a “leisure capsule for views and lucrative private events,” but if it goes ahead, it will forever change the London skyline, all because a banana-loving, Gherkin owner wanted a revenue-generating restaurant and it wouldn’t fit into the top of his pickle.

TU R F HO U SES The Age of Settlement began in the ninth century with Norse settlers crossing from what is now Scandinavia in search of more arable land. Anyone who has watched the drama series “Vikings” might remember that the boat builder Floki took a group of people to Iceland, believing that the entrance to Valhalla was here. The Norse immigrants brought with them a housing design that lasted until the twentieth century – turf houses. These are timber houses based upon the longhouse designs of Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the Scottish Isles, but adjusted to specific Icelandic conditions. The foundation of turf houses was usually one or more layers of rock, but with a wooden structural base. The walls were double-stacked and lined with compressed soil for isolation; before an outer layer of turf, cut into strings, diamonds or squares got pressed together; creating the grassy surface of these original and iconic Icelandic homes. To this day, several turf houses have been preserved and kept for historical purposes, although most of these were the more lavish homes of wealthy farmers or priests. Examples of smaller abodes that have still been preserved, are Selið in Skaftafell and Árbær in Reykjavík. UTOPIA - 25

IC ELA ND’S 18 T H CE N T URY ‘STO NE AGE ’ Around the middle of the 18th century, the Danish government introduced industrial development into Icelandic society, hence beginning what might be called ‘the stone age’ in local architecture. What this meant was the emergence of stone buildings in Iceland, which also coincides with the growth of Reykjavik as a city. A key figure in this whirlpool of development is Skúli Magnússon, often called the Father of Reykjavík who had a workstation built for him on Viđey Island just off the coast of Reykjavík’s harbour. Icelanders tried building with brick for a brief period in the 19th century, but quickly found that bricks weren’t a suitable material for Icelandic weather conditions. So, they reverted to stone.

Then, in the 1860s, a new material that would supply the Icelandic people with an unexpected upgrade in their housing design started arriving at the island’s shores. This marvel turned out to be corrugated iron—and one needs only take a stroll down any old street in Iceland to notice it still embellishes an abundance of buildings, in a parade of different colours, all over the country. Many houses were wood on the inside, but clad with corrugated iron. This is a material that other Europeans considered dull and only suitable for industrial buildings, but in Iceland they found that it offered excellent protection from the climate and started to develop a way to make its use look more aesthetically pleasing. For a start, in Iceland they place the corrugated sheet vertically, by contrast with the more traditional horizontal placing --which had a practical purpose (it is more effective for mitigating the effects of salt and rain), and so they started to decorate the outsides of these buildings in vibrant colours with wooden adornments. Still, it could not be said that Iceland at this point had an architectural style of its own., nor did it have native architects, because Danish architects had undertaken much of the stone building work and timber houses were often imported from Norway and put together on arrival – a forerunner of the flat-pack house.

C O M I NG OF AG E IN T H E 20TH CENTURY It was not until the turn of the 20th century that Iceland began to see its first architects appear, and as it turned out, these few key figures became responsible for a remarkable portion of the country’s ‘look’. Guðjón Samúelsson is celebrated as the father of Icelandic architecture and he served as the country’s official state-architect over the course of his career spanning three decades, making him responsible for a multitude of Iceland’s most iconic buildings. Wanting to contribute to the revival of the Icelandic Commonwealth, the last timeperiod of independence before the seven-hundred-year reign of foreign powers that followed, Guðjón mixed different architectural styles with influences from Iceland’s most prized attributes: its stunning environment and sweeping natural landscapes. Amongst the veritably hundreds of projects that Guðjón managed over the years, he birthed such lionised landmarks as the National Theatre on Hverfisgata and the one and only Hallgrimskirkia Church at Skólavörðuhæð. Both projects were greatly influenced by the basalt rock formations of the local nature, as well as Iceland’s sweeping volcanic landscapes and glaciers. Before Guðjón Samúelsson, there was Rögnvaldur Ólafsson, often designated as the country’s original state architect before such a title even existed. Although not widely recognised locally, he is generally considered the first Icelandic architect in history. Before the many works of Rögnvaldur, imported Nordic timber houses clad with corrugated iron dominated the architecture of Iceland. Although Rögnvaldur approached many of his projects in this manner, he was also one of the first to incorporate the use of cement, even though Guðjón Samúelsson is often given sole credit for that particular design conversion. His most important legacy, however, would be the no-less-than twenty-five churches of his design that dot the Icelandic countryside—which is more than any other Icelandic architect ever produced over his or her lifetime. The churches are as diverse as they are many, but most of them deviated from the then-dominant local design of a simple square with a rising front-end tower. What is decidedly the architect’s greatest feat is his design of Húsavíkurkirkja—arguably the most beautiful church in Iceland.

THE M A N W HO M A D E R EY K JAV IK Einar Sveinsson might not be a household name in Icelandic culture, but his work is everywhere to be seen in Reykjavík. Throughout the 20th Century, Einar designed such a vast amount of the capital, that many would suggest it wouldn’t look the same without him. He is responsible for not only a myriad of nationally known and celebrated buildings like city hospitals and public schools—but a generous amount of housing complexes and the layout of entire city neighbourhoods, Einar mixed the modern with the classical and functionality with aestheticism and while most Icelandic architects studied in Denmark, Einar got his technical degree in Germany before starting his own firm in Reykjavík. In his studies, he got acquainted with the merits of functionalism—a non-period-specific architectural style in which a building’s purpose dominates its design. Upon arriving at the local scene, still dominated by Nordic influences, Einar quickly became the country’s leading connoisseur of the functionalistic method. Throughout the 1930s and onwards, with some tweaks and variations, the style would become the prevailing trend in the structuring of Reykjavík City and the rest of the country.

Throughout the 20th Century, Einar Sveinsson designed such a vast amount of the capital, that many would suggest Reykjavík wouldn’t look the same without him.

THE ‘M A D A R C HITEC TU R A L SC IENTI S T ” Einar Þorsteinn Ásgeirsson was something of a rock star of the architecture world. He was simply a visionary who loved shapes and devoted his life to them, having by the time of his death in 2015 left behind the legacy of creating cells with a new kind of fivefold symmetry design.

Einar named said design gullinfang and, consequently, it then got further developed by artist Ólafur Elíasson, a close friend and yearlong collaborator of Einar, for the geodesic dome structure of Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre —one of Reykjavík’s most esteemed landmarks. Contrary to popular belief, the glass panels of Harpa are not based upon the basalt landscapes of Iceland—which are hexagonal—but birthed in Einar’s mind after decades of studying the boundaries of three-dimensional shapes. His ideas were often so far ahead of their time that they couldn’t be built, but his designs can be seen in some famous places, such as the Munich Olympiapark of 1972 where he worked with Frei Otto on the steel structure that still stands to this day. Like many forward thinkers, he wasn’t so well known in his home country as abroad, although he and his wife did manage to build their geodesic dome home in Iceland, near Hella within Iceland’s Golden Circle. It combines the features of the traditional turf house stretched over a geodesic framework and blends perfectly with the natural surroundings.

C o n tem p o rary Icelan d ic arch itectu re After WWII, Iceland started to move away from functionalism towards a more defined modern identity. This was helped along by the country’s new-found wealth, which allowed designers to use more expensive materials, such as steel and glass. Icelanders weren’t universally delighted by this shift towards the contemporary. Unlike other countries it had no skyscraper cities and architecture was viewed as a new discipline with a multitude of outside influences. However, the war had changed local thinking and there was a desire to think bigger than before. On the other hand, the connoisseurs of functionalism, who had just begun to establish a direction in local housing design, lost control of the national environment. Iceland appeared to have little direction when it came to tackling contemporary design, but some say that this serves to define its style as a chaotic melting pot of influences. In some ways this gives its architects an extraordinary freedom and that it is and a deciding factor in Reykjavík’s renowned charm is arguably its collage of crisscrossing streets and mismatched houses. One example of this is Grjótaþorp District in central Reykjavík. Most of the houses weren’t designed by an architect, but constructed by builders with an appreciation for local design. Icelandic architecture tells us a fascinating story. A small handful of architects, mostly trained overseas, have influenced the entire look of the country, but even they always connect to their roots. Its history may not compare with other Nordic countries, but it is distinctive and offers us a way into understanding a country of ice and fire.

The building, City View House, was once the home of the Kearley & Tonge, a firm of tea importers founded in 1876 by Hudson Ewbanke Kearley, 1st Viscount Devonport. He expanded his company to make it a wholesale grocery business in the 1800s and took on the six-storey building in east London, turning it into a factory producing jams, cakes, biscuits and sweets. City View House fronts onto Bethnal Green Road and was converted into flats in 1987.

Together, Sara and Michael make up the artistic studio SUPRBLK, which has now been commissioned to take on another project in Camden in light of their work at the Bethnal Green factory. The couple, who met at university in Canada and confess they are both ‘ridiculously tidy’, lived in the space for a year in a bid to work out how they might renovate it. UTOPIA - 38

Ms L’Esperance, who specialises in ‘leftover spaces found in urban environments’, told magazine Homes and Property she was drawn to the trendy neighbourhood for its “artisanal coffee shops” before finding the property and giving it a new lease of life. Ms L’Esperance, who is RIBA nominated, has also worked on projects for Pinewood Studios while Mr Putman worked on theatre projects including Bristol’s Old Vic.

The pair created as much storage space as possible - even hiding the kitchen light switch beneath the office floor. They used Birch plywood to create ‘pods’ that divide the space into spacious living quarters with an integrated kitchen and living area. And applying ingenuity, they made use of the 3.5 metre-high ceilings, they built the kitchen with an office space above and a bedroom at its rear. Somewhat unbelievably, the flat has a home cinema, with the front door used as a backdrop for the projector fitted to the wall. The pair also stripped

The architects have created a home that provides both privacy and openness at the same time. back the boards that had been put in place in the late 1980s to reveal the brickwork behind, using it to create a light and airy modern feel. “It was really fun to knock down the dividing walls and reveal the huge windows. We discovered lovely two-tone glazed bricks that we used to form the colour palette for the conversion,” Putman said. Their ultimate aim was to achieve the open feeling of a loft, but at the same time create private spaces for dining, working, bathing and sleeping. To do this, they thought in terms of verticals and by doing so managed to add in a 9m2 square guest bedroom, 6m2 of storage and a small office on two mezzanine levels. The two living pods create a foundation structure for the space. The multi-function pods are made from simple, cheap materials such as timber studs and plywood for bracing. For example, the bathroom pod creates a partition for a dining room and has storage space in the wall, as well as delivering the platform for the guest room above. The kitchen pod works even harder: it has a mini-office above and also forms a headboard for the bed behind it. Between the two pods is the living room. Although it is relatively small, it feels much bigger, because all the spaces flow into each other. Basically, the architects have created a home that provides both privacy and openness at the same time. The bedroom flows into the entrance space so that it benefits from natural light, but it also has a large walkUTOPIA - 39

in wardrobe. “We actually use that room a lot: we get dressed there, Michael works out and I do yoga. It’s great to have a cosy, safe space.” Putman explained that the secret to doing all this on a tight budget was to work with a skilled contractor who specialised in joinery and to limit the range of materials and products. “We wanted to use humble materials in an interesting way to compliment the existing building,” he said. L’Esperance and Putman have used this space, which is in addition their own home, as an opportunity to test materials and develop ideas. “The future of housing has to be in thinking of new ways to live,” L’Esperance said. Adding, “In Switzerland they sell houses by the cubic metre. It’s time we started to use the whole volume of spaces, and not just draw plans.”

fashion week, it launched its fashion color trend report, which highlighted the top colours fashion designers showing at london fashion week will be featuring in their collections for the upcoming season – that is spring/ summer 2019. It may be fashion related, but what happens there will most likely impact on interior design colour schemes for next year as House Beautiful has said.

What the colour palette looks like It looks like bold and energetic colours will be dominating next season. The Pantone Institute picked out Fiesta, Jester Red, Turmeric, Pink Peacock, Pepper Stem and Lemon Verbena as the leaders. Fiesta is a lively orange red that exudes excitiement, while Trurmeris is another shade of orange that is just a bit spicey, as you might expect. Jester Red is rich, elegant and urban, while Pink Peacock is a vibrant feat for the eyes. Pepper Stem is a yellow-green that speaks of nature and Lemon Verbena is a light and sunny yellow that should produce a feeling of happiness. More subtle tones include a classy Toffee brown, while Mango Mojito is a comforting golden yellow and Terrarium Moss is a deep, earthy green. The Pantone Neutrals As always there need to be some neutral colours to act as a contrast to the brighter tones. In Spring/Summer 2019 these will be Soybean, a subtle, creamy colour that has a lot of versatility. Sweetcorn, another neutral is close to what some might call â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;buttermilkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and both sit perfectly alongside Eclipse, the other neutral that is the deep blue of the midnight sky. International Part of our team is currenlty stationed in Holland, where our carpenters and installers are ready to begin the delivery of another refurbishment and design project. Here is a preview of our kitchen design for this property which was styled to provide a contemporary yet friendly feel. Olive and blue tone upholstery fabrics, lustrous brass and slate-tone metals complement the beautiful cabinetry in our selected American wallnut wood. A wine holder was cleverly designed to create a floating effect for the bottle, and to simultaneously create an almost invisible divider between the kitchen and the open hall. We can’t wait to see it completed.

And on the subject of wine, although dark and cosy wine cellars can be so inviting, for our project in Sierra Blanca we’ve kept this wine cellar design fresh and minimal by playing with light tone woods against stark white walls.

In the master bathroom, a free standing and elegant bath sits on an elevated, floating effect, marble platform, and a stunning wood floor gives the whole bathroom interior an organic touch.

In light of Ambience’s growth, we will be opening our new headquarters and design office above our showroom on The Golden Mile, and you will soon be able to enjoy some exclusive design pieces in our showroom as well. A criminal justice system based on REPARATION rather than RESTITUTION

Deanna Van Buren

“

Teaching a design class in a prison inspired Deanna’s ideas and it started her thinking about a “world beyond incarceration.” She is cofounder and design director of Designing Justice + Designing Spaces and she envisioned “a criminal justice system based on reparation rather than restitution.” Her empathic, human-centred spaces offer a major shift in how we address crime. They are designed to allow victims of crime to feel heard and “restore” justice to entire communities rather than simply handing out prison sentences. The first of these “peacemaking centres” opened in Syracuse, New York, while another is under construction in Van Buren’s hometown of Oakland, California. Other projects she is working on include a resource bus for women getting out of prison, with design input from 30 female inmates.

Tiffany Brown started the 400 Forward initiative to celebrate the 400th black woman becoming an architect in 2017. African American women only make up 0.003 percent of all architects in the USA, an Tiffany Brown hopes to get young girls interested in architecture and design education and see them right through to being licensed by mentoring them along the way. She comes from Detroit, holds an MBA, and is also a cofounder of the Urban Arts collective. She has made a career out of raising awareness about how planning and design can impact urban communities, behaviour, and health. “The biggest impediment to careers in design for the kids I work with is exposure and seeing themselves in positions of success,” says Brown, who wants to be “the face I was looking for growing up, especially for girls.”

HIP HOP is modernism’s post-occupancy report

Michael is also known as the Hip Hop Architect and has argued that the built environment gave birth to hip-hop culture itself. His initiative—the Hip Hop Architecture Camp – is expressly for less advantaged young people and uses a combination of music and culture as a way to help them explore the concepts of urban planning, architecture, design, and economic development. Camp attendees are asked to come up with creative visions for their communities and to build models –digital and physical—as well as make a music video. Like Tiffany Brown, Ford is a Detroit native and also a cofounder of the Urban Arts Collective.

MASS Design Group

“

The question is not what is the cost of architecture, but what is the cost of not having architecture.

“

The MASS Design Group started in 2008 at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. It is the group behind the Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, the scene of race riots during the era of Civil Rights protests in the early 60s. MASS, which stands for Model of Architecture Serving Society, believes that putting public interest first will help evolve architecture and that asking for input from the people who will use it empowers those same people. The group’s design for the Maternity Waiting Village in Malawi is an example of the designers putting this philosophy into practice. Here women who are about to give birth can stay in a safe environment with health professionals on hand. The result has been a reduction in maternal mortality rates.

Architecture has a role to play in creating RACIAL AND CULTURAL EQUITY in space

Bryan Lee Bryan Lee of New Jersey noticed a massive difference between the Italy’s public piazzas and civic design in the USA including a lack of diversity in design. The experiences led him to found New Orleansbased Colloquate focused on design justice for social, civic, and cultural spaces. Colloquate champions advocacy campaigns and explores proposals for public buildings, as well as protesting “unjust power structures.” Its latest project is transforming 19 blocks beneath an elevated expressway into an economic centre with green infrastructure, local vendors, and public meeting space based on input from thousands of residents. “ Liz Ogbu Liz Ogbu is the principal architect at Studio O. She’s a TED speaker and takes a multidisciplinary approach to advocating for social and spatial justice. Her passion for taking a human-centred approach to challenging urban environments globally has resulted in several projects coming to fruition, such as an innovative shelter for immigrant day labourers in the US to innovative sanitation facilities and clean-water enterprises in Africa. She has also worked on gentrification projects in the USA, including one with Pacific Gas & Electric, NPR’s Story Corps, and residents of San Francisco’s Hunters Point neighbourhood to develop a former power station into a community that respects both the old and new.

This was inspired in a Cubist mantel of one of Lopez’s showrooms. The armchair is a classic Gio Ponti newly upholstered in a woven wool from Kvadrat. A skylit corner of the rooms boasts a stained pine library desk, two sixties Italian armchairs, and a tree. All in all, this Paris loft represents the perfect combination of vintage furniture and mid-century lighting, creating, therefore, a space with a unique design that marries everything that is artsy, sophisticated and refined.

Virgin’s fist ship is to be called The Scarlet Lady and it will feature more than a dozen dining experiences, with restaurants designed by the industry’s top talent. Richard Branson said: “There’s a Virgin twist on everything you’ll see aboard the Scarlet Lady, which means there will be no stuffy formalities, boring buffets, and no main dining rooms.” Branson selected Roman and Williams to design much of the interior, particularly the dining venues. The company is already known for its work on behalf of Gwyneth Paltrow and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as the Ace Hotel. Robin Standefer and her husband, Stephen Alesch founded Roman and Williams. The pair have created fine dining concept inspired by The Grill in New York City, alongside a number of alfresco dining ideas. Others involved in the project include Amsterdam-based Concrete, that was asked to design a “a sleek food ‘lab’ and a bold, freakishly photogenic space for plant-based diners and a legendary brunch,” while, Tom Dixon has designed a vibrant venue for upmarket Mexican food.

Razzle Dazzle The interior design by Concrete for the ships’ plant-based restaurant Razzle Dazzle is aptly named. Inspired by the World War I ships dressed in black and white stripes for camouflage out at sea, Concrete brought the radical scheme inside the Scarlet Lady and it will also feature a drag queen-hosted brunch.

Wake This expansive restaurant designed by Roman and Williams is the fine dining spot on the Scarlet Lady. Guests enter via a dramatic, sweeping staircase from which vantage point they have a stunning view of the ship’s wake. The woodpanelled dining area offers that deluxe feel and the menu is big on seafood—it has its own oyster bar—steaks and tableside cocktail carts.

PinkAgave Upmarket Mexican cuisine deserves a look that is a world away from walls painted with cacti, and that is exactly what designer Tom Dixon has achieved with this ultra-cool styling that is inspired by Mexico City’s geometric architecture. Guests of the Pink Agave will enjoy tortas, tamales and more, plus a glass or two of finest mezcal.

The Dock Luxury alfresco dining designed by Roman and Williams invites guests to lounge while enjoying the views and graze on Mediterranean dishes in tapassized portions from roaming food carts, or grilled-to-order skewers.

Geonbae The ship’s Korean BBQ restaurant designed by Soft Room, is intended to generate a party atmosphere. ‘Geonbae’ is Korean for ‘Bottoms Up” and diners will discover that each meal starts with a shot of soju and continues with grilled meats prepared at each diner’s individual station. The traditional Italian trattoria, called Extra Virgin, is modern and youthful with its jewel-like colours, while The Pizza Place is fun filled and beach-like in its styling. Finally, the ship also has a spacious Foofd Hall where guests can get anything from a bento box to a salad and a variety of pastries. Situated in a gallery area, it is airy and light filled with great sea views. By the way, all food is included in the price of the cruise ticket, although it isn’t a cruise – at least not in Richard Branson’s mind – it’s a Virgin Voyage!
