“HOW DO I MAKE MY HOME MORE COLOURFUL?” THIS IS A QUESTION THAT WILL BE FAMILIAR TO EVERY INTERIOR DESIGNER AND IF YOU ARE ALSO WONDERING HOW YOU CAN MAKE A ROOM MAKE MORE OF A STATEMENT THEN WE HAVE SOME GOOD NEWS; THE QUIRKY CHARMS OF MEMPHIS ARE SAID TO BE MAKING A COMEBACK. This Milan based company was founded in 1980 by Ettore Sottsass and went on to epitomise Postmodern style, which sought to replace the plain, clean lines of Modernism with something altogether more decorative. It is said that The Memphis Group took its name from a Bob Dylan song, ‘Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again’ which played throughout the first meeting of this new artistic collaboration that took place in Sottsass’s apartment. Sottsass, who was in his sixties by this point, had attracted a group of young, talented, like-minded designers who drew their inspiration from disparate elements such as Art Deco, Pop Art and the 1950s propensity for kitsch. The group, which also included Alessandro Mendini, Martine Bedin, Aldo Cibic, Andrea Branzi, Michele de Lucchi, Nathalie du Pasquier, Hans Hollein, Arata Isozaki, Shiro Kuramata, Matteo Thun, Javier Mariscal, Luciano Paccagnella, George Sowden, Marco Zanini and the journalist Barbara Radice, would ultimately define the look of the 1980s.

From that crucial first meeting it was not long before the world was introduced to this new design collective and indeed, The Memphis Group exhibited annually from 1981 until 1988, its debut at Milan’s 1981 Salone del Mobile proving a resounding success. Alice Rawsthorn of The New York Times describes Memphis’s output as, “Exuberant, glittery and unashamedly kitsch, [it] was everything that modernism wasn’t.” It was also everything that the 1980s was; for instance, with their geometric shapes and bright colours, album covers such as Bronski Beat’s The Age of Consent and Culture Club’s Waking Up with the House on Fire could easily have been designed by Sottsass or one of his collaborators. Most memorably described as “a shotgun wedding between Bauhaus and Fisher-Price”, Memphis’s bold and colourful designs dominated the world of interior design from 1981 to 1988, when the group disbanded. However, The Memphis Group continued to influence design in the 1990s, many cultural commentators proposing that Philippe Starck’s designs and many of Alessi’s products would not have existed without the guiding hand of Sottsass and his colleagues. In fact, several of the original Memphis Group members have designed products for the Italian homewares company, ensuring its spread still further. And now Memphis is back, much to the delight of those who have the confidence to adorn their living spaces with eccentric pieces of furniture; no less a fashion barometer than Karl Lagerfeld himself has outfitted his Monaco home with Memphis pieces. Back in the 1980s it was described as bizarre and loathsome by those who preferred furniture with clean lines and subtle colours but we have travelled a long way since then. Could the world really be ready for the second coming of The Memphis Group?

I started off my photographic career in the same way as most other professionals, in that I handled different assignments ranging from Weddings and Corporate work right through to promotional Real Estate photography. I initially followed the roller coaster ride that two recessions brought to Spain since my arrival here in 1989. But, now that I have a strong client base in both Real Estate photography for several of the top Estate Agencies on the Coast and with holiday rental companies here and in the UK, this has allowed me to leave the weddings and portraits for the specialists so that I can concentrate on what I do best.
Photography started as a hobby for me when I was a 12-year-old in the UK; it’s very useful to have a keen interest in a subject that can also earn you a living. I work mainly in Andalucia and occasionally other parts of Europe and I get to see some of the best properties at the top end of the market as well as the lovely Spanish countryside that we call home. When I’m not working I find time to enjoy the inland parts of Andalucia on my Ducati, with my cameras of course, recording nature’s Flora (sunflowers) and Fauna (Griffon Vultures). Photography plays a huge role in my life and I think of it as “Nice work if you can get it!”

The architect’s studio at Alejandro Gimenez specialises in high quality villas and apartments and when they design a new residence the team takes care of all the details, including the bathroom. The design approach to the bathroom is to imbue this space with the same qualities and characters as the rest of the home, and as the images from one of the studio’s projects illustrates, they do this by using the same materials and colour schemes applied in other parts of the property, but often in a different way. Alejandro Gimenez says that some bathroom suppliers’ ranges are too modern, or too cold in feeling and his team always tries to find a solution that is both contemporary and warm. He adds that they often use traditional materials, such as micro cement, stucco or mortex, but in a modern way. When selecting colour schemes, the preference is for natural pigments and natural materials, such as wood or rustic marble, as illustrated in the white basin and pink wall. With this bathroom the architects have used the ‘open space’ that is very on trend currently. Privacy is reserved for the WC and shower areas using glass doors. It is not the case that a bathroom is just for bathing anymore as another of his images shows: you can relax in warm water and have a view through a window to a fountain. (see picture with pink wall). Mirrors in a window are another innovation that allows you to see yourself and outside at the same time! The introduction of outdoor views from a bathroom is something new and Alejandro Gimenez is also a fan of creating outdoor bathrooms where you can bathe in privacy and enjoy the sun. His influences are Mexico—he was trained by a Mexican master architect—and Japan, where his wife is from. Japan has a long tradition of incorporating bathing into a daily lifestyle and it has always been about more than just washing in this culture. The Crochet Washbasin, inspired by the artisan method popular in Europe during 19th century, is rich in texture, and has a timeless classic design influence. BREXIT STRATEGY
WHILE THE RECENT REFERENDUM RESULT MIGHT HAVE COME AS A SURPRISE TO SOME, NO DOUBT MANY UK IMMIGRANTS WILL HAVE BEEN WONDERING HOW THE NEW SITUATION WOULD AFFECT THEIR STATUS IN SPAIN, EVEN AS THE FALL-OUT IN BRITAIN CONTINUES AND THE COUNTRY’S LEADERS TOPPLE. It is doubtful that Rudyard Kipling was thinking forward to the EU referendum when he wrote, “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs...” but in these times of uncertainty and change it is quite natural that most expat conversations should revolve around what might happen in the future. UTOPIA - 60
The good news is that the change will not happen overnight, so whatever decision you might make about your future, it will not have to be rushed.
If your are a UK national currently residing in Spain there are also other matters to consider, such as healthcare and pensions.
The leaving process will take two years from the point at which Article 50 is invoked which, according to the Prime Minister, will happen in October 2016.
Spain’s reciprocal agreement with Britain means that UK immigrants will be able to rely on the normal service continuing until the country leaves the EU and, of course, the usual private healthcare companies will be able to offer cover as well. Those who work in Spain or have chosen to contribute to the social security system will still be able to access full healthcare, a situation which will not be affected at all.
Another thing to bear in mind is that the Spanish government is unlikely to make any decision that will result in long-term financial harm to the country. For many years now there have been measures taken to make Spain attractive to investors, so naturally it makes sense to treat current residents with at least the same degree of consideration. Foreign buyers account for 20 per cent of all house sales in Spain and non-EU citizens currently enjoy very similar rights to EU residents, so it is worth bearing this in mind. In the days immediately following Britain’s vote in favour of leaving the EU the exchange rate entered a period of volatility, which was by no means unexpected and, by the time you read this, the situation may well be considerably calmer. Those of you who have already started the process of looking for a property on the Coast may be wondering how the new situation will affect your likelihood of securing a mortgage. At present Spanish banks anticipate that foreign buyers will be in a position to pay a 40 per cent deposit and this is unlikely to rise dramatically. The growing popularity of Spain as a property market for foreign buyers has meant that it is extremely unlikely to collapse in the face of a BREXIT, since it has been a long time since British buyers were regarded as essential to its existence. If you already own a property or are thinking of buying one in the near future, in other words, you can feel confident that the market will be more likely to strengthen than to weaken.
The situation for pensioners is rather less certain, since the current agreement results in Spain receiving a per capita payment from the UK for every pensioner who has filled in an S1 form. It is entirely possible that UK pensioners living in Spain will be required to purchase health cover once BREXIT is fully effected. It is also thought that an alternative to the EHIC card will have to be developed. It is possible that pensioners will experience changes to their status, as at the moment their payments are adjusted every year in line with local inflation. The pensions status quo will undoubtedly form part of the negotiations and may well alter. Inheritance tax is another frequently voiced expat concern but this is unlikely to change. Britons who own property in Spain are obliged to adhere to the same rules as Spaniards and the ‘double taxation’ agreements that have been forged are international rather than EU based. In short, the BREXIT process will be a slow one. However, it is difficult to believe that any deal will involve UK citizens being harshly dealt with; Britain may have voted itself out of the EU, but it remains part of Europe and it is likely that expats will continue to enjoy living on mainland Europe.

HOUSE PROJECT by Päivi Halt
WHEN INTERIOR ARCHITECT PÄIVI HALT’S FAMILY MOVED TO SOUTHERN SPAIN SHE FOUND THE IDEAL PROPERTY TO TURN HER DREAM OF A VILLA IN TUSCANY INTO AN IDEAL SPANISH HOME. HERE SHE CHARTS HER EXCITING JOURNEY FROM FINDING THE PERFECT PROPERTY THROUGH TURNING IT INTO A FAMILY RESIDENCE THAT TICKS ALL THE BOXES. My master plan for the master bathroom To make the master bathroom as spacious as possible we will have to remove the wardrobes from the existing bathroom then it will be perfect. Once that is done we can fit a good-sized bathtub, shower, toilet and washbasins. I always wanted to have the bathtub in the middle of the room and now it’s possible. We’ve also opted to place it in front of the window and because our neighbours have a view of it, we’ll have to use privacy glass or curtains. Designers often discuss sunlight in the bathroom and while a bathroom has to be well lit, direct sunlight is not ideal. Therefore, the natural location for the shower and toilet is on the north side, in shade. These spaces can be lit with wall or ceiling lamps and the washbasins will be in the middle of the room to get the all the available light. I think the washbasins, or basin, are best located by the toilet and shower. In Spain you normally have two washbasins in the master bathroom, however, I would prefer one big basin, but let’s see what kind of furniture I can find for it. This time I’ll try to find a ready-made modern washbasin in white with a couple of drawers beneath! I’ve never found a bidet very useful. In our house they have only been used for washing the dogs. So instead of adding them in every bathroom, I’d rather import bidet faucets from Finland. The bidet faucet is a washbasin tap with small hand shower. It’s super practical and something I’ve really missed here.
Choosing the taps! Talking about taps, I have had to speed up with making a choice. One day when visiting the house I realised that the hot and cold water pipes had been installed already and without even approving the bathroom plans. It is wonderful that we don’t have the problem of typical Spanish mañana workers, but I still rather would have decided the tap types first, and then do the installations. If something annoys me, it has to be done again. Thankfully the pipes were more or less on the right walls, but the positions on the walls were incorrect. So, we needed to make a decision about the taps immediately. I do have my favourite brands and models, but I also had to do my research and look
at the price range in Spain. So, I went to the local hardware stores to inspect their collections. It’s also important for me to understand which brands the Spanish value, in case we sell the house. I found many unfamiliar and inexpensive brands but, in general, every hardware store stocked mostly Roca, Hansgrohe and/or Grohe. I was playing with the idea of ordering the taps from Finland so I could show you the beauty of the bidet tap, but to make my life easier, I ended up choosing Grohe; the brand that is well known by all of the plumbers. In Finland, Grohe manufactures special bidet taps for the local market, so I can order them separately and this way I will make sure I don’t have a mix of brands in my house.
This time I’ll try to find a readymade modern washbasin in white with a couple of drawers beneath!
So why did I choose Grohe? I normally specify Hansgrohe or Oras (the Finnish one), but Grohe is as good as the other two and I actually just wanted to test it. The user experience with these three has always been great and you can trust that they’ll work well for years and years. Grohe has a good collection of different styles to choose from and I ended up ordering most of the taps from the Atrio range. It has a modern feel, but Atrio taps also fit in traditional interiors. From the start I have tried to choose Spanish materials and equipment for our house, but unfortunately I couldn’t find a wide enough product range from Roca with the styling that will give the bathroom that extra sparkle. Playing with Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint We discovered that the storage area was filled with old furniture left by the previous owners, including lamps, paintings, chairs, tables and other wooden furniture. It is mostly traditional Spanish furniture, which is great as they already look lovely, even without any paint. But with some lovely shades of grey and different finishes this furniture will look amazing! Our office will be located downstairs, but now I think it will be a workshop first where we can enjoy exploring the many finishes that you can get with chalk paint. With this paint you can get into the painting straightaway without having to remove the previous surface. My inspiration normally dies quickly if I have to sand off the varnish first, but now there is going to be a new problem; everything is in danger of getting some paint! I went to a workshop to try out the chalk paint and learn new methods of using it. If you look at my photos you can see that I painted the square on the left with Paris Grey and finished it with a dark, clear wax. UTOPIA - 78
The dark wax is brilliant way to age the paint and to give it an industrial look. In the middle square, I used two different tones of olive green with a bit of whitewash. The result looks aged after several layers of paint. For the square on right, I chose three different shades of grey, and I added some pattern to it with a knife. It turned out to be surprisingly three-dimensional. So, you can see how creative you can be with the chalk paint because it has endless possibilities and a great range of colours. I know the whole family will love participating in this painting project! If you haven’t heard about this paint before, here are two websites to visit: chalkroom.es and anniesloan.com. I’ll post pictures of the furniture, when it is all painted. I’m hoping to get some edge into our interiors by combining the modern and old furniture. Let’s see how it will work out! Jim Parsons 1920S SPANISH REVIVAL HOME
Sheldon from the massively popular series “Big Bang Theory” is a science geek with limited social skills and a central character in the comedy. Actor Jim Parsons who plays him, is clearly nothing like his on-screen persona as his stylish mansion shows. Stiles O. Clements designed the Spanish-Moorish revival home with white stucco walls in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles in 1922 and it has had a few celebrity owners, including Robert Pattinson. The house is arranged in a U-shape that creates a light-filled interior. Jim Parson’s and his partner looked for an interior designer who could do justice to the mansion’s original features, particularly the hand-painted wooden beam ceilings, and chose Steven Johanknecht, founder of LA design studio Commune.
Johanknecht’s response was to approach the project as if the house was an artwork and he chose furnishings with textures, shapes and colours that complement the architecture. The vast expanses of glass windows and doors ensure dramatic views of the estate’s gardens and the designer opted for colours and accessories in the garden view rooms that reflected a natural palette. By contrast, in the television room the walls are covered in Lustrous Blue River by Benjamin Moore while the bright red bookshelves allude to the home’s roots in Spanish-Moorish style. The marigold-coloured couch is a sizzling contrast with the blue walls and the 1970s chandelier by Robert Sonneman adds some ‘disco days’ glitz. Overall, it’s a mansion that doesn’t shout “I’m a celebrity”; it’s a home that emphasises living a relaxed lifestyle surrounded by dramatic features. UTOPIA - 81
Gwyneth Paltrow MEXICAN HIDEAWAY
The actress and food blogger has a luxury celebrity rental in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, a tranquil and rather small fishing village with only 1621 inhabitants in the state of Nayarit, north of Puerto Vallarta. Mexico’s Pacific coast and beaches, such as San Blas, have been popular with tourists for some time and the photos of Ms Paltrow’s bolthole with its ocean views give you a good idea of why that is. Although the villa called Casa Majani looks suitably isolated for a celebrity who wants to get away from the limelight, it is actually only a five-minute walk from the St. Regis Punta Mita Resort and if Gwynnie has a golf cart she can be at the Four Seasons in 10 minutes. The luxury residence on the Punta Mita peninsula has six bedrooms and is inside an exclusive development and was designed by internationally famous architects Manolo Mestre and Juan Collignon. One of the highlights of the villa’s grounds is the network of pathways criss-crossing expansive reflection pools to create the illusion that Casa Majani is somehow suspended above the Pacific Ocean. Dianna Agron HOLLYWOOD HILLS HOME
Perhaps you don’t recognise the name Dianna Agron, but if you have ever watched the popular musical-comedy series “Glee’ then you’ll be familiar with her as Quinn Fabray, a high school cheerleader. Recently, the 30-year-old actress listed her 1920s era, French-Normandy style Hollywood home for sale for $1.595 million. As you can see, the house has a steeply pitched hip roof and vaulted ceilings that are typical of the Normandy region’s traditional architecture, which create an authentic French feeling in the living room. The kitchen is an oasis of pale blues and greens with the black and gold stove adding a bold statement to the otherwise cool, clean tones of the rest of the space. She has used black and gold to similar effect in the sitting room and one of the guest bedrooms features some unusual grey and white patterned paper to create a sense of the past meeting the present. Her choice of navy blue and mustard in the bathroom is similarly eclectic and bold and it accentuates the pristine white fittings. The warm tones of the hardwood floors in the master bedroom and the neutral walls with the black paintwork and headboard combine to make an elegant yet cosy statement that continues into the en suite bathroom with its Victorian claw foot tub. Add in a rather stunning guesthouse with its own outdoor terrace space and bright, airy interior, plus a swimming pool surrounded by greenery and you might almost believe you’re in France rather than the Hollywood version.

A Divine Project of Classic Modernism
Chicago-based designer Donna Mondi channels the dark glamour of 1920s Chicago in her latest interior design project featuring KOKET SINCE 2001, DONNA HALL, PRINCIPAL OF DONNA MONDI INTERIOR DESIGN HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY CREATING INTERIORS WITH A DELICATE FUSION OF EUROPEAN CLASSICISM AND AMERICAN MODERNISM. IN HER MOST RECENT CHICAGO PROJECT, HALL’S INSPIRATION IS THE SULTRY CHARM OF ROARING TWENTIES CHICAGO, TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE UNIQUE ARCHITECTURE OF THE SPACE. “The overall inspiration came from the era of the 1920s in Chicago. I always take cues from the architecture of a space and then twist it in a modern way,” says Hall. UTOPIA - 86
Her interiors are composed of bold elements layered with textures and patterns, but with a cohesive feeling that runs throughout the design. One of her noted design signatures is to play with the ceiling design, or the “5th wall”, as seen in the Dining Room of this project. Hall covered the ceiling in an ethereal Maya Romanoff wall covering whilst painting the surrounding walls in a glossy black lacquer to reflect light

The overall inspiration came from the era of the 1920s in Chicago throughout the oval shaped room. The split Living Room also features a dynamic plaster ceiling, added to complement and downplay the striking portrait that immediately grabs your attention. The Master Bedroom flashes tones of gold and white, as is highly visible in the lively, vintage-vibe wallpaper. To add some symmetry and balance to this playful space, Hall created matching scenes on either side of the fireplace featuring two custom KOKET Divine Armoires. The iridescent peacock feather armoires were custom made into chests, then Hall topped them with hung Art Deco mirrors, to adorn either side of the fireplace for luxurious his and hers spaces. “I like to infuse interiors with elements from different periods and styles to create timeless, unpredictable surroundings. By merging traditional and contemporary styles, the end result is interiors with layered textures, avant-garde elements, and cuttingedge styling.” UTOPIA - 87
Hall’s favourite design trend of the moment is incorporating bold pops of colour The Divine Armoire is a brand favourite, not just for its exotic and appealing design, but for the sense of eroticism it conveys. The alluring armoire is the perfect embodiment of KOKET as a brand, from its opulent and iridescent peacock feathers to the flirty gold ribbon handle, evocative of girlish innocence. Hall’s favourite design trend of the moment is incorporating bold pops of colour, seen throughout this interior design project and most specifically in the girl’s bedroom. The colours mingling in the dramatic rabbit print wallpaper are echoed in accessories around the room, such as the fuchsia bedding and flowers. Her unpredictable yet timeless surroundings are something to be desired, as is evident in her two Illinois office locations and by her growing clientele.
