THE WEATHER Ask most people why they’re here and the weather will feature pretty high up the list of reasons. It’s a temperate Mediterranean climate and as any Marbellí will tell you, the town has its own ‘microclimate’ due to the La Concha Mountain that statuesquely overlooks most of this stretch of coast. Basically, the weather is nearly always ‘good’; in summer you can expect temperatures of around 25-30 °C and in winter the average is around 16 °C. It doesn’t rain much, and when it does it’s over quickly. There’s less than 30 days of rain per annum on average.

COSMOPOLITAN NEIGHBOURS It’s a melting pot of nationalities and you might have a Muscovite living on one side of you and a Parisian on the other. Scandinavians and Finns love this coast, as do the British and Germans and now it is becoming more popular with Chinese and Asian investors. Plus, there are all the celebrities who have property here – so you never know who you’ll be living next to!

THE BEACHES Of course, people come here for the excellent beach life. From Málaga to La Linea, the coast of the Costa del Sol teems with suntanned bodies in the summer and with avid walkers, and water sports enthusiasts in the winter. It’s never really too cold to visit the beach, although you won’t see many locals getting in the water before June. A number of beaches on the coast have been awarded Blue Flags, such as Artola, Los Monteros and La Fontanilla, just to name a few. Plus, there are the wonderful chiringuitos, not to mention the beach clubs like Nikki Beach. The development of a walkway that links up the whole of Marbella also means that is possible to walk or cycle along the beach for long stretches.

THE NATURAL BEAUTY You are never far from areas of stunning natural beauty. In the hinterlands of Marbella you’ll find the La Concha nature reserve, plus the Sierra de Las Nieves that stretches out from Ronda at its centre. In the hills you’ll see eagles and wild boar, plus a host of stunningly colour flora. You’re not far from the Sierra Nevada, where you can ski in winter. Indeed, Marbella must be one of the few places where you can suddenly be transported from the beach to the ski slopes in a matter of a couple of hours.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT There are other reasons we might put first, but since we’re talking about reasons to buy a property, we must mention finances high up the list. Prices in the area are still substantially below prerecession levels. They dropped by about 40% from the peak reached in 2007, but credit ratings agency Fitch and others predict that prices will start rising again from 2015, especially in high demand areas like Marbella; so now is the time to buy. We have to add that the exchange rate of the British sterling to the Euro, which hit a seven-year high of £1=€1.42 in March 2015, provides an added attraction for UK investors.

WELL CONNECTED You have both Málaga and Gibraltar airports to choose from. Both have expanded the routes on offer in recent years and the expansion at Málaga airport means that you could become one of the people who commutes to work from Marbella. The fast train service to Madrid and Barcelona is an added bonus and you’ll find the roads on the coast are second to none in terms of conditions.

THE LEISURE There’s a fantastic nightlife throughout the year in Puerto Banús’ clubs and bars, plus live music at the Starlite festival in summer. There are around 90 golf courses and equestrians are well catered for, as are tennis players, yoga practitioners, gym-goers and enthusiastic quizzers. There’s plenty to do at all times of the year.

SHOPPING From designer labels to street markets and everything in between, Marbella is simply a shopaholics heaven. Plus, we must give a special mention to all the little local shops where you can buy fresh fish caught locally, meat products from farms on your doorstep, as well as farm-fresh eggs and, of course, all the fruit and vegetable products.

THE FOOD AND DRINK There are so many excellent places to eat here that we don’t know quite where to start-or finish! THE GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME

SO, YOU WANT TO LIVE ON A GOLF COURSE? One of the fundamental attractions of the Costa del Sol for golf lovers is the fact that the entire coast, from one end to the other, has some of the most spectacular golf courses in Europe. For golfing Europeans, and many of them come from the slightly colder northern countries such as Ireland, the British Isles, the Netherlands and Scandinavia where, although the game is played all year round, the conditions aren’t quite as sunny as they are on Spain’s southern fairways. When you consider the number of golf courses on the Costa del Sol—a substantial 60+ courses— it would appear that the development of the coast, right from the early days, very much focused on creating a haven for the golfing community that would also make the most of easy access from all parts of Europe. Its accessibility in many ways makes it a much preferable choice to Florida, which is probably its main competitor, alongside neighbour Portugal. And, in order to make the golfing experience as pleasant and comfortable as possible, developers created residential properties around the golf courses that offered year round living, or excellent investments for golfers who only wanted to play part of the year. It is

after all, a cheering thought to put money into property so that you can enjoy your sporting hobby and then rent it to other golfers when you’re not using it and cover your own expenses. The number of golf courses is matched by the quantity of golf properties, which is also is quite sizeable, and whether you want a frontline apartment, or a villa with a spectacular view of the mountains and seas as well as the greens, there really is something to suit every golfing enthusiast here. With so much choice, where should you go? With that question in mind, the Utopia team has selected six of our favourite courses to whet your appetite.

LOS FLAMINGOS GOLF It’s a newer course, but already it has made an impact, The 18-hole, 5,714m and par 71 course was designed by the renowned Antonio Garcia Garrido. It is part of the exclusive Villa Padierna development and the properties in this location are just as smart as the golf course. It has generous sized greens covered in Penncross, and rather narrow fairways covered in Bermuda that call for some precision. It has already hosted a number of prestigious tournaments including the European Seniors Tour Final.


EL PARAISO Not far from Los Flamingos there’s the more established El Paraiso Golf Club., which was one of the first courses on the coast. The views from all over this 18-hole course are spectacular and it has the reputation of providing one of the best championship layouts on the coast, plus the clubhouse is super friendly. The setting is stunning; the lush fairways are dotted with streams and flanked by palm trees and jacarandas, plus lakes provide a home for waterbirds. World famous golfer, Gary Player designed the course, so need we say more!

REAL CLUB DE GOLF LAS BRISAS Nueva Andalucia is home to ‘Golf Valley’ and Las Brisas Golf is considered one of the best in the area. It’s another of the oldest clubs on the coast and the famed course designer Robert Trent Jones, Sr, who was probably at his peak when he created Las Brisas in 1969, designed the 18-hole course. This course demands great accuracy from players and you really have to use your head. There are plenty of water hazards, plus 10 artificial lakes and all within a stunning setting with views to the sea and mountains. What a place to live!

MARBELLA GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB Some call it the “jewel in the crown of Marbella golf” and it certainly receives plenty of official accolades from Tripadvisor and other travel and golf reviewers. It’s another Robert Trent Jones Sr designed course and it is one of the most challenging courses on the Costa del Sol. Situated in the exclusive Los Monteros area, east of Marbella, it offers a superb experience, not least because it provides a package for all

the family, as do many of the other Clubs. Junior golf is a big attraction here, and a number of Costa kids have gone on to win golf scholarships to American universities.

LA QUINTA GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB Set in the hills between San Pedro de Alcántara and Nueva Andalucia, three times world champion and Ryder Cup winner Manuel Piñero designed this extremely attractive 27-hole course. It’s divided into three nine-hole courses that are surrounded by a landscape of exceptional beauty. It also boasts an excellent range of restaurants and a 170-room, five star hotel with an Arab-influenced spa and gym. It’s a great place to hold a private party as well, and the Club specialises in organising such events.

VALDERRAMA Well, we could hardly leave out the course that is known as “the No. 1 course in continental Europe golf since 1988.” Guess what? Yes, it’s designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. It opened in 1974 and it has hosted the Volvo Masters, the Ryder Cup, the Amex Masters and the Andalucia Masters. Every golfer who deserves to be called a professional has played it including Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy to name a very few of them. It has a gorgeous clubhouse and each hole has it’s own name, and setting. As you’ve probably realised there are 54 more golf courses to write about, so this really is a very small sample. There’s no doubt that the designers who worked on them knew how to make the most of the settings, and the properties that surround the courses benefit from the same views. So, if you’re dreaming of a frontline property with a view of the green, green grass, then maybe one of these courses might be the one you’d like to call ’home’.

Although Jackson Grundy’s Puerto Banús-based office has only been open since April of this year, the firm’s excellent international reputation, plus the team’s invaluable knowledge and expertise gained from over 21 years in the property market in the UK, has already secured the Northampton real estate agents a position as one of the leading real estate agents on the coast. I met up with Amy who has been with Jackson Grundy for over ten years in England and who made the big move to Marbella at the beginning of this year to open up the firm’s first overseas branch. “Of course, at first I was a little apprehensive as I wasn’t quite sure what to expect and it was a massive lifestyle change, but now I simply can’t imagine living anywhere else. I love it. The weather, the laid-back lifestyle and, of course, the great team that I work with!” Jackson Grundy’s offices neighbour those of UTOPIA so we’ve got to know the team over the past eight months and we’ve seen them go from strength to strength. There was no initial teething period. They hit the ground running from the day they opened shop and they haven’t looked back! “There’s been a little learning curve,” Amy tells me, “but business has been great since we opened. We’ve invested heavily in online marketing and we advertise on Rightmove and A Place in the Sun. We’ve had sales from 130,000 to three million euros and have had clients from all walks of life and from all over Europe.” I ask Amy how the real estate industry differs in Spain and what she puts Jackson Grundy’s remarkable success down to. “The biggest difference, I suppose is sharing with other agents!” she concedes, “but I actually prefer it, it makes everyone’s life easier and we stand a better chance of giving our clients exactly what they want. We have a fantastic database, which we all share and this means that buyers don’t miss any homes and vendors don’t miss out on any opportunities.”

“As soon as I find what my client has been looking for and I know that that is ‘The One’ I feel like I’m making people’s dreams come true!” The vast majority of Jackson Grundy’s clients come from the UK and many of them view a great selection of the properties online before even arriving in Marbella. I’m interested in how this works and what kind of relationship Amy is able to build up with clientele from overseas. “We have 14 offices scattered all over Northamptonshire and a great website, which is updated daily so our clients are confident of the meticulous and thorough service they will receive from us. A great deal of our clients have bought or sold with Jackson Grundy in the past and they are either looking for a holiday home in Marbella or to relocate entirely. From the moment they make enquiries with me, I work to narrow down their requirements and specifications, then send them all of the properties that meet their needs. We build up a great relationship and I am their only point of contact as I scour the coast in search of their dream home, and we liaise back and forth until we have put together a selection that the client wants to view.” I ask how long this process usually takes. “It depends entirely on the client … and the property that they are after. I had clients from Northampton and we had been mailing back and forth for a few weeks. Once I’ve got a good idea of what the couple were after, they flew over for two days, during which time I showed them a total of 19 properties – including the off-plan developments from Propana Estates. They were immediately sold on these fabulous bespoke properties and purchased Propana’s last build. It was a really great feeling to have been able to find exactly what they were after and that’s one of the things that I love most about this job. Pleasing our clients and being able to realise their dreams.”

The team at Jackson Grundy prides itself on its personable and friendly manner. They collect clients from the airport and ensure that they have a good idea of the area, taking them around the various towns, ports, urbanisations and developments, so that they truly have a good idea of where they want to be and what kind of property they are after.
