PAUL’S DOME, PARIS BY THE EIFFEL TOWER, ROME BY THE DOME OF ST. PETERS, AND NEW YORK BY THE STATUE OF LIBERTY PLUS MANY OTHERS. HOWEVER, AS THE RESIDENTS OF MARBELLA WILL ENTHUSIASTICALLY POINT OUT, YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A BIG CITY TO HAVE ICONIC LANDMARKS. THE DRESSED RHINO
La Concha mountain stands proud and protective behind Marbella, and is in many ways comparable to the famous Corcovado mountain that creates an imposing backdrop for Rio de Janeiro. La Concha means “shell”, and it is a shell shape. It’s in the Sierra Blanca mountain range and the Sierra de las Nieves national park. At a height of 1200m, you can see La Concha from quite a distance and be reassured that Marbella is ‘there’. And, of course, if you’re one of the intrepid people that make it to the top of this beautifully shaped mountain, then you’ll have an incomparable view of the Costa del Sol and across the Straits of Gibraltar to Africa.
Leaving the actual town of Marbella and heading into nearby Puerto Banús, famous for its jet-set nightlife as well as it’s charming marina that is home to millions of euros worth of yachts, you’ll come across yet another work by Dalí. It’s certainly one you won’t miss. The “Rinocerante Vestido con Puntillas” as the sculpture is correctly known, or “The Rhino Dressed in Lace” weighs three tonnes and it arrived in Marbella in 2004. Dalí created it in 1956, two years after he had made a film with the title, “The Prodigious Adventure of the Lacemaker and the Rhinoceros.” It doesn’t sound like a blockbuster, does it? Well, he was a Surrealist.
THE MARBELLA ARCH Once upon a time there were two arches, but now there is only one of these fabulous, big, fat, white arches telling you that you’ve either arrived in Marbella, or you’re leaving it. The arch, which lies on Marbella’s east side, has recently been refurbished and repaired, making it safe once again. Unfortunately, the second arch outside San Pedro was taken down in 2010 to make way for the underground tunnel that prevents traffic congestion above ground. The arches were the brainwave of Marbella’s ‘famous’ mayor Jesús Gil, who had them erected during the election campaign of 1991.
SALVADOR DALÍ SCULPTURES As you walk through the lovely, leafy and refreshingly green Alameda park in Marbella’s bustling centre, head towards the sea and you’ll find yourself in the broad and spacious boulevard of the Avenida del Mar. This truly holds one of Marbella’s most wonderful surprises: a series of sculptures by the world-famous Spanish sculptor, Salvador Dalí. Most art aficionados know that Dalí is a Surrealist and you’d perhaps expect his sculptures to be a little odd. However, these 10 bronze sculptures capture the spirit of Spain and include a representation of Perseus, a man on a dolphin, Dalí’s wife, Gala, in various poses, Don Quixote sitting down and a wonderful “Cosmic Elephant.” You’ll see the artist’s signature quite clearly on each one of these bronzes. Bringing the Dalí sculptures to Marbella was another of former mayor Jesús Gil’s ideas and, if you’re an art lover, you’d be inclined to think it was one of his better ones.
THE COPPER TOWER At the other end of Marbella, as you arrive off the Golden Mile you’ll come across an imposing tower made of copper. Its proper name is ‘El Pirulí’, but most people refer to it as ‘The Copper Tower’. It’s by a Burger King, which is a landmark around the world!
LA VICTORIA From The Rhino on the roundabout outside the Cristamar centre, look straight down the avenue to the sea and the sight of a gigantic statue of a human and godlike shape with arms raised in the air will assail your eyes. This bronze and copper man mountain sits atop a 26m (85ft) column of granite with some distinctive classical Greek decorations on the column’s plinth supporting the sculpture. Zurab Tsereteli, a Georgian sculptor, designed the statue called ‘La Victoria’, which was a gift to Puerto Banús from the mayor of Moscow in 1994.
No doubt others may have their own lists of Marbella’s landmarks, but these are the outstanding ones that you’ll live with as a Marbella resident, and the sights you mustn’t miss if you’re a very welcome visitor.

Having exited a six-year downturn, Spain is going through a particularly purple patch and is on course to become the largest economy in the Eurozone – overtaking the UK and the United States. The nation has posted seven consecutive quarters of growth and its property market is mirroring this optimistic outlook. The latest quarterly bulletin issued by the Spanish Council of Registrars showed a massive uptick for Q1 with just over 9% more residential properties changing hands over the same period in 2014. 12.22% of these homes were bought by foreigners – again up 9% on Q1 2014. UK nationals top the non-Spanish buyer chart, unsurprising given their longterm affection for Spain and the current favourable pound-euro exchange rate, followed by French, Germans, Belgians, Swedes and Russians. The Registrars also reported a 2.65% rise in average price per square metre over the last 12 months. At the end of April, the Bank of Spain confidently declared an end to the property crisis. Its Director of Studies, José Luis Malo de Molina, said that “the adjustment in the housing sector, in principle, is complete” and “the process of price adjustment, in principle, has already bottomed out”.
