Zendaya Coleman has done a lot in her 23 years. Born on September 1st, 1996 she is the only child of Claire Marie and Kazembe Ajuma and has five older half-siblings on her father’s side. The actress and singer, whose name means ‘to give thanks’ in the language of the Shone people of Zimbabwe, started out appearing in productions at the California Shakespeare Theatre, where her mother worked as the house manager, and other local theatre companies in her hometown of Oakland, California. She appeared in numerous stage productions while attending the Oakland School for Arts including starring as Little Ti Mourne in Once on This Island at the Berkeley Playhouse and as Joe in Caroline, or Change at Palo Alto’s TheatreWorks. In additional to her theatre work, Zendaya modelled for Macy’s and Old Navy as well as a Sears commercial in her early years. Her first television debut was the popular tween series, Shake It Up, alongside Bella Thorne. A young comedy about two best friends who dreamt of becoming professional dancers and finally get their chance

when they audition for their favourite show. At just 14 years old Zendaya and Bella became tween idols with their young fan base. The premiere on November 7th 2010 was watched by 6.2 million viewers becoming Disney’s second highest-rated premiere in their 27 year history. Zendaya and Bella’s characters were so popular they even inspired their own fashion line and the songs they performed from the show were hit downloads. Watch Me released in 2011, peaked at 86 on the Billboard Hot 100. As a result Zendaya signed a recording deal with Hollywood Records and released her self-titled studio album in 2013. She then went onto voice a character in the animated television movie, Pixie Hollow Games as well as guest appearances on TV series A.N.T Farm and Good Luck Charlie before reuniting with Thorne in the 2012 movie Frenemies. In 2013 Zendaya made the move to an actual dance competition starring in Dancing with the Stars as the competition’s youngest contestant. She was partnered with professional dancer, Valentine Chmerkovskiy and the couple finished runner-up behind Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough. Whilst you may expect her ‘Shake It Up’ role would help not hinder her performance, she explained to Good Morning America, “I’m really used to hip hop dancing… so I kind of have to forget what I know and restart all over again.” For her 18th birthday, Zendaya, an ambassador for Convoy of Hope, celebrated with a campaign to help feed at least 150 hungry children in Haiti, Tanzania and the Philippines through feedONE. She also recorded John Legends’s 2013 All of Me with a portion of the proceeds going to the organisation. Her philanthropy continued throughout the years using her 20th birthday celebration to help raise 50,000 dollars to support Convoy’s Women’s Empowerment Initiative.

This month the young starlet is back on our screens as she reprises the role of Michelle in Spider-Man: Far from Home, available to view at Cines TeatroGoya in Puerto Banus from July, and if the past 23 years are anything to go by, we are sure Zendaya will be making waves in Hollywood for many more years to come.

In addition both couples will continue to work together on projects in the future, including on The Foundation’s mental health program, Heads Together.” The recent creation of a new household to represent Harry & Meghan, a new Instagram account and the subsequent unfollowing of William & Kate have fuelled the rumours… is it the end of the fab four for good?

But we want it to be as stressful as it can be because that’s when you see people’s true colours and how they would react.” This year’s rumoured list includes Coronation Street’s Lucy Fallon, Strictly Come Dancing Queen, Stacey Dooley, footballer John Terry, breakfast TV star Kate Garraway, Bake Off’s Rahul Mandal plus a whole host of Love Island stars including Georgia Steel, Eyal Booker and Dani Dyer.

TWITTER truths 25 years after the killing of his wife, O.J. Simpson has joined Twitter and started things off with a video saying he’s got a “little gettin’ even to do.” Confirming his new accounts the former footballer stated “I’ve got some things to straighten out,” but refused to elaborate at the time. The 71 year old has kept a relatively low profile since his release from prison in October 2017 for robbery and kidnapping over an attempt to steal back some of his sports memorabilia from a Las Vegas hotel room. In a recent interview Simpson declared that neither he nor his children want to talk about the killings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman who were stabbed to death on the night of June 12, 1994. Simpson was ultimately acquitted of the crime after a televised trial that riveted the nation raising issues of racism, police misconduct, celebrity and domestic violence.

No. 6 Collaborations Project Ed Sheeran’s latest album is loaded with collabs; the 15 track album set to drop on July 12 via Atlantic Records boasts team-ups with Chance the Rapper, PnB Rock and Justin Bieber along with a whole roster of other talents yet to be announced. The album follows in the footsteps of Sheeran’s extended play, No. 5 Collaborations Project which arrived in January 2011. “Before I was signed in 2011, I made an EP called No.5 Collaborations Project. Since then, I’ve always wanted to do another, so I started No.6 on my laptop when I was on tour last year. I’m a huge fan of all the artists I’ve collaborated with and it’s been a lot of fun to make,” the 28-year-old musician said in a statement.

Well, quite simply, you can’t. But here are some

theories and ideas that may be good ways to pass on the best message we can based on methods used by child psychologists, buddhists and therapists. Who are you? First of all, are you a good person? I have had to check myself on a plethora of occasions and realise the image I am presenting to my children. What your norm is becomes their understanding of reality and so if you don’t want them to carry on traits of yours, you’re going to have to take them away from the day to day. So the first step in ensuring you’re doing everything possible to prevent any negativity passing on to your offspring, the best thing to do is to work on yourself rather than them. If I hear my kids acting out towards one another, I ask myself whether they’re just repeating what they hear and what I could do to prevent that kind of behaviour by changing my own. Providing children with a positive role model may not determine their personality or future actions but it will be their grounds for reflection; their innate knowledge of how they were brought up to be. No one is, or can be, perfect; what would we measure it on in the first place? All we can do is recognise the necessary grounds for living a positive and happy life.

Show me the love. Whenever a conflict comes to pass with another person, we all need to check our reactions. Are we being kind? Are we acting out of love? Or are we instinctively defending ourselves and acting aggressively? Are we thinking it through before reacting? If we consistently practice thinking before we speak, contemplating what is actually happening before exploding into upset or anger, and realising what the other person is saying or doing and why, we may come up with an entirely new, calmer reaction. If we don’t act immediately, if we contemplate and resolve quietly we may just be able to reverse the instinctive reaction to blurt out something extreme and instead act

out of kindness. See the other person’s reasons, and talk them through. Find a way to give rather than assume any kind of attack is actually directed at you, realise it comes from a reason deep inside the other person. If we get into the habit of acting from the perspective of love, this is an incredibly positive and effective way to pass this attitude on to our children. Instead of shouting at them when they do something wrong, take a look at what they're doing and why and try to find a rational way to explain to them what it is that is wrong about it. Don’t condemn but rather inform and teach, and ask them to show that they understand - empower them to be in control of their learning and their own actions.

Give not to receive. One thing many a human is guilty of is reciprocal giving; expecting to receive the same as they give. We need to learn to give out of love and kindness and not out of expectation that we will receive the same treatment in return. Teach the children to give for giving’s sake and this will reward them with the concept for the future, to not be hurt when others don’t react in the same way they do, but to know deep inside them that they have done the right thing, from a position of kindness. What other people do lies in their hearts, if they act badly or don’t deliver kindness in the same way, that rests with them.

Present a u nited front: If you are a couple raising children, one of the best motives they can have to develop healthy, respectful, trustfilled relationships of their own is if they have been surrounded by a united team of a parenting front. Disruption comes in many forms but seeing strain in relationships can be detrimental and hurtful. However, as I’m saying this I do not agree that couples ought to pretend life is a bed of roses, I don’t even agree that kids shouldn’t experience arguments between parents yet what they do need to see and realise is the way such quarrels are resolved. By listening to each other, discussing the matter rationally, and finding a solution as a unit. The other way they need to experience unity is that both agree on the way they decide to raise the child. If one parent says one thing and the other disagrees this can be so disruptive, confusing and cause conflict and siding within the family

Providing children with a positive role model may not determine their personality or futu re a ctions but it will be their grou nds for ref lection; their in nate knowledge of how they were brou ght u p to be. Spea k the truth. I am all for honesty being the best policy but as anyone would agree we all lie from time to time. To tell your kids the truth from the word go is hard, but I think it probably gives them more opportunity to realise that there are no grounds for lying, especially within family. To always be honest with them builds an innate trust that will not only bind you for life but will allow them to choose to act the same way with their friends and future families. Trust, honesty and openness go such a long way. But we of course need to show them this for them to realise it.

Ma n ners ma keth ma n. Some don’t seem to think this carries any weight any more, but if a person can carry themselves respectfully in any given situation then surely they will open more doors than they’ll have slammed in their face. I don’t just mean recognising which one is the salad fork at a formal dinner, but knowing how to behave at a royal gala as well as how to act when strolling through a foreign village, has a big impact on how you are received. Knowing how to connect with your fellow humans from any walk of life is a hugely important tool for any person in any situation, and can make or break the outcome being positive or negative. Knowing how to ‘read the room’ and carry yourself through any moment is a great attribute. So to teach, or imprint good manners on our children, plus an understanding that we are all different and that is never wrong, is a vital lesson in life. These are not commandments, and I hope they don’t sound preachy, I just wish someone had given me these ideas when our children came along, or more to the point, when I came along as its taken me a heck of a lot of learning and listening to even recognise that such a position in life makes it all the more simple, and gives a far clearer viewpoint from which to live it.

So, we get told to work on our feminine energy to manifest the things that we want. But here’s the kicker – manifestation is merely a creation of an experience and by the laws of the universe, creation requires feminine AND masculine energy. The masculine is the providing energy of the universe. Once you know the laws and how to work with them, you can learn to manifest on demand. Lorna’s points to remember about Law of Attraction if you desire to manifest something or someone in your life right now:

Having a strong desire is not necessarily enough to manifest it. How many times in the past have you really wanted something, but it has not come to fruition? Desire is the vibrational point of attraction and vibration is made from codes. The codes are made of 3 parts; shadow, light and dark. So it’s not the intensity of your desire to manifest, it’s whether your desire is created mainly with light codes (magnetic to the providing energy) or shadow codes (energetically ugly to the masculine providing energy). Visualizing and affirmations alone won’t get you far for long. ‘Action’ is required but only inspired action. Sometimes that could mean no action at all, which can go against many people’s internal beliefs about what it takes to make things happen.

Taking loads of action and following systems to try and ‘make’ it happen just leads to exhaustion. If you are exhausted your vibration will be weak and it will become harder and harder to get the results like you used to, or like you truly desire. Not only that, but anxiety kills your magnetism, so it’s a no-win situation. So now you know, if Law of Attraction has been working inconstantly for you, or you seem to be manifesting things you don’t want, it’s because it works deeper than your thoughts, feelings and actions. It works within the codes that those thoughts, feelings and actions are made from. That’s where Shadow Alchemy comes in, but we will save that for another time.

VITAMIN C:

The StressReducing Nutrient

ame the first fact that pops into your head when I mention the words ‘Vitamin C.’ I would be willing to bet that some of the initial thoughts that crossed your mind were related to oranges and possibly your immune system. But, can you think of anything else about the well-known vitamin? If you answered no, it’s perfectly okay, most people are not Vitamin C connoisseurs. But, the more you learn about Vitamin C, the more interesting it becomes. It is worth reading up on because, believe it or not, the vitamin is pretty crucial to your overall health – and not just around cold and flu season. Did you know that humans cannot make their own Vitamin C? We need to get it from the food or supplements that we consume. But that is not true for all beings. For example, mountain goats are able to develop their own Vitamin C. And when mountain goats get stressed out, their own internal Vitamin C production increases exponentially. That is because Vitamin C and stress have a lot to do with each other, and not just in the mountain goat world…more on that later. Since we are not mountain goats, we need to obtain Vitamin C from external sources. Some of the best natural sources of Vitamin C include black currant, bell peppers, guava, broccoli, cantaloupe, pineapple, kale, papaya, kiwi, and gooseberries. Oranges do have some Vitamin C, but not as much as everyone thinks! Vitamin C is unstable and, thus, it is destroyed by cooking, so be sure not to char your Vitamin C-rich foods if you are heating them.

Now, for the lesser known benefit of Vitamin C. Aside from being a potent antioxidant, Vitamin C is also beneficial for adrenal health. Similar to how Vitamin C is directly related to stress in mountain goats, humans’ stress levels are also greatly intertwined with the C vitamin. Within the human body, the adrenal glands have a high concentration of Vitamin C. In fact, the adrenal gland is one of the organs that contains the highest amount of Vitamin C within the human body. Increasing cortisol levels can suppress Vitamin C absorption from the adrenal cells. This is significant because it means that being stressed out (a factor that can lead to increased cortisol levels) can reduce your levels of Vitamin C. Therefore, if you are experiencing a high stress time in in your life, it would not be a bad idea to increase your Vitamin C intake.

ON THE FLIP SIDE, VITAMIN C IS CHAMPIONED AS A STRESSREDUCING NUTRIENT Not only has it been found to minimize the effects of stress on individuals, but it also reduces the amount of time that it takes for someone to recover from a stressful experience.

In various animal studies, Vitamin C has proven to significantly decrease the secretion of cortisol – the fight or flight hormone that I mentioned earlier. Vitamin C is also a co-factor in creating norepinephrine (noradrenaline) and epinephrine (adrenaline) – hormones that directly impact the sympathetic nervous system.

IF VITAMIN C IS BEING ABSORBED BY YOUR BODY PROPERLY, YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM WILL BE ABLE TO REGULATE THE IMPACT OF STRESS MORE EFFICIENTLY Though many people seem to believe that you need to consume a large quantity of Vitamin C to reap the benefits of it (did anyone else’s mom make them drink multiple glasses of orange juice if she heard any sniffles?), for optimal adrenal health, it turns out you do not need an immense amount of the vitamin. It is tightly controlled by your system and only about 200mg can be absorbed into your body at a time. So, if your practitioner has you on high doses, you may need to spread it out. As you finally reach them, shield your eyes against the horrors of the interior and realise you'll have to use a sock in lieu of long-since-exhausted toilet paper, your nose yearns for that middleaged businessman's sweaty tube pit. Anything but this. Anything except January. Bile rising in your throat, you grin to yourself and thank CHRIST and the seven dwarves it's not January. So what makes us smile come summer? It can't just be all the extra flesh on show because a) Some of the most miserable people cry-wank their way through hours of porn a day and that's full of the stuff, and b) A lot of the flesh on show in the UK is ropey as fuck. No, one key reason is that perception of sunlight triggers in the brain the production of serotonin, a hormone which stimulates our mood, bringing an increase in calm and focus. Serotonin also plays a part in our restfulness, acting as a chemical precursor to melatonin, which governs our sleep cycle. You don't need a scientist to tell you most of us are less grumpy after a good night's sleep. Crucially, UVB rays from sunlight interact with our exposed skin, (ropey or otherwise)

to encourage production of vitamin D, which not only helps to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy, but also helps maintain high levels of that serotonin. Bare more flesh for the sun and get more chemically enhanced good vibes. Maybe that's why the gigantic, barely-dressed, lobster-red creatures drunkenly wobbling their way into Yates as the sun sets generally look dead pleased with themselves.... but then a lot of them are toothless so that theory falls down... It's not the only contradiction present in this topic. Experts who for years told us to ward ourselves from the harmful UV rays of the sun are in many cases now advocating some unprotected exposure. It seems vitamin D may play a part in preventing and even treating many types of cancer, including lymphoma, prostate, colon, lung and ironically, skin. Many experts believe approx 15 mins without suncream a few times a week could not only be â&#x20AC;&#x153;safeâ&#x20AC;? but actually beneficial to health. Of course, if you're reading this while sipping an ice-cold drink on your

In the UK, where we're chronically deficient in both vitamin D and consistent rays, it seems it might be wise to snatch those 15 minutes wherever you can. Research shows loading up on vitamin D in the brighter months can help maintain serotonin levels during those where our tears mingle with the torrential rain. Of course, if you've got some of those demon-spawn, don't even worry about suncream. By the time you've chased them thrice round the house and de-escalated two separate tantrums over them not wanting to wear the stuff, then headed off a third tantrum over the missing bucket and spade, then found the bucket and spade they forgot they hid in the washing machine, then remade the packed lunch they got into while you were looking for the bucket and spade, then found the car keys the little bastards hid while

When I Was DRINKING i loathed myself. Now, I AM VERY PROUD OF THE PERSON I’VE BECOME. One morning, at the end of a drinking binge, I’d spent all my money, maxed out my credit cards, it was hot outside, but I couldn’t face going back to see my girlfriend or family to get some rest,” says Andrew, a 43-year-old business executive. “So I went to my car parked in the underground parking lot, but realised I couldn’t drive as I could barely walk. I sat there, wanting to be alone and isolate myself from everyone and everything. “Then I cried and cried and contemplated ending my life – but realised I didn’t have the courage or the means to do it. If I’d had a gun in the car, I would have probably used it on myself. “That was one rock bottom I had that was caused by my drinking and the way I lived then, but there were several others – including watching my girlfriend and mother cry because they didn’t know what to do and their love for me didn’t seem to be enough to stop me doing what I was doing to myself.” It’s frequently unfathomable like this to people who care about someone drinking too much. But likewise as Andrew explains, the person drinking often doesn’t know why they do it, or continue despite vowing never to touch another drop. “I always made excuses before about stopping and I blamed everyone else, especially those closest to me. I thought I was going crazy as I really didn’t want to go out on another bender, but found myself doing it over and over again anyway. “I would often come in to the office with virtually no sleep, and sit at my desk physically ill from the binge, hands shaking, avoiding eye contact with my colleagues, hoping that if I kept to myself long enough no one would notice…” Growing up, Andrew had seen his parents drink especially at parties they had hosted. He’d also experienced rage and

constant criticism, particularly from his father. Andrew started drinking aged 11 – “to escape my life and change the way I felt”. Aged 18, he also used illegal drugs for the first time, starting with marijuana, then ecstasy, ketamine, psychedelic mushrooms, opiates, and finally lots of cocaine. He realises now that as he got older he also used relationships, sex, eating and work in the same manner. “My aunt was the first person who showed concern about my drinking when I was just 18,” says Andrew, now settled on the Costa del Sol near Marbella. “I brushed that off as nonsense. But looking back on my drinking and drugging career, it was always a problem almost as far back as I can remember: the only real thing that I consistently looked forward to was the next bender. “However, I only realised it was a problem much later in life, aged 34: I’d met someone and didn’t want ‘that life’ any longer, but found myself – despite my own will – going back to it over and over again with increasingly worsening consequences to myself and people around me. “After probably hundreds of successive unsuccessful attempts to control my drinking, a few violent incidents, a relationship that was falling apart, at risk of being fired professionally for regular tardiness and poor results, deeply in debt, the tears of my mother and concern of all my family, I finally agreed to speak to someone about it.” He saw three therapists, without any result. Then someone introduced him to a member of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).

“At my first AA meeting I was surprised at how many people there were, and how ‘normal’ they were. I had no idea what it was going to be like, but I went only because one of the people I met prior to going to my first meeting suggested it was ‘just information’ that I would find there. I liked that idea. “I was also surprised at how welcoming and non-judgemental people were. It gave me a place where I could breathe, a place where I felt safe and loved. “Now I’ve been free from alcohol and all mind-altering substances since June 2012. I also realised I had to stop any other behaviours that I’d used to change the way I felt – if not, it wouldn’t be long before I drank or used drugs again. “The 12 Steps we do in AA are an amazing path for coping with life and learning to have a happy life, sober. In fact, I would rather be a sober alcoholic with the 12 Steps, than be a nonalcoholic drinker without them as they have profoundly changed my life and the way I look at the world. “When I was drinking I loathed myself. Life’s infinitely better now, and I am very proud of the person I’ve become.” Andrew’s message to someone who might be struggling with alcohol is a clear: “Ask for help by calling the AA Helpline, or reach out to someone who you’ve heard goes to AA and is sober, go to a meeting, and keep going to meetings. Things will definitely get better if you do those things.”

Jane is a 53-year-old full-time mother of children aged 16 and 11, who has an “unbelievable” life living close to Marbella. But it wasn’t always that way - far from it… Here she tells her amazing story. There was always drinking in my family, my dad was a mentally abusive alcoholic. There was constant rage and criticism towards both me and my sister. It was horrific. Then I discovered at the age of 11 that booze blotted out my fears and the loathing I developed due to the continual criticism. So I thought it was fun to sneak into pubs and drink a bit… A year later I started to use cannabis too. As well, I always tried to change the way I felt with relationships, which were almost always extremely abusive ones. Looking back, the only relationship I’d known was like this, because I learned about relationships from what I saw behind the closed doors of my family home. My drinking had already become a problem by the end of my teenage years. I think everyone must have known. But I just couldn’t stop and stay stopped. Another decade later and it was extremely noticeable. Even so, I carried on drinking too much too often for another five years. Then aged 35, I realised I really needed help – I simply couldn’t control my behaviour after the first drink. But even though I knew this I couldn’t

How I went from DRINKING EVERY DAY and being too TERRIFIED to leave MY HOUSE to having a LIFE beyond my Wildest Dreams stop myself from taking that first drink. I suppose I’d convince myself that each time it would be different. It was always the same though. So I’d wake up ashamed at what I’d done or said while drinking – and full of such huge remorse that yet again I’d been powerless over my drinking. My rock bottom was when I was living in Holland. All I did was stay in the house. I lived there for a year and was too terrified to go further than the corner shop – and that was only to buy drink. I had no life. I was in an extremely horrible relationship then. The man I was with had other women. So I just drank and took drugs alone. I could see no hope and no way out. Then a friend of mine mentioned Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). I had what I now know is called the “gift of desperation” and so I went to my first meeting. Although I didn’t get it immediately to stay sober, many things that were shared there at the meetings by other people who’d once drank like me but who now had their lives back on track – and, in fact, even better lives than they’d ever known – sunk in. I kept hearing people at the meetings say they had a “life

beyond their wildest dreams”. I wanted what they had, I so wanted that. Very quickly I found that the more I went to the AA meetings and the more people there that I got to know, the more I loved AA. I loved how the people at the meetings made me feel like I was the most important person in the room. The meetings were so much better than I expected. Now I’ve been clean and sober since January 2002. To stay sober I still go to meetings, and a large part of this is that I can now be one of the people who helps some of the people who come to their first meetings, in the same desperate state that I was in. Doing this helps me stay sober because it feels fantastic to help. As I did when I first went, people can really relate to someone who’s actually been where they are. I came from an extremely abusive and unhappy childhood, but thanks to AA my life is unbelievably happy now, one that’s filled with love and laughter. I have two beautiful confident loving daughters, who thank God have never seen me drink. I am also so lucky that I have a considerate loving husband and we hear each other. My advice to someone struggling with alcohol is please just speak to another alcoholic who’s in AA. Call the helpline number and try some meetings, and see what happens.”

This month Jonathan encourages you to pump up the volume, whether it’s blow-dries, tongs or extensions… bigger is always better.

Bored of being straight? Are all you ladies finally listening to me or have you all had your straightening irons nicked? We are seeing less and less hot iron damage to the hair nowadays. Ten years ago, it was the norm for my clients to come in with singed hair, looking like they had leant over the gas ring to light their fag and set their hair on fire. Don’t even get me started on clients who had chemically processed hair and continued to use their straighteners daily. We were basically on the highway to hell. I am ever so thankful for the bouncy blow-dry becoming the must have look. The bang on trend, beach waves, also gets another big thank you from me. The fashion for an increase in volume is such great news for the health of hair and has basically stopped me from having a nervous breakdown. Well just about! Now this doesn’t mean you can’t ask for straight hair ladies. Just replace it with the word sleek. We just want to avoid the 90s Kate Moss heroin chic look. So, why do straightening irons cause so much damage? You are basically using two nuclear hot plates to seal one tiny defenseless piece of hair with heat that could probably melt marble. On top of that you are pulling at the hair causing tension damage. Compare this to using tongs or a wand, which you gently wrap the hair around, count to ten and then release. The hair is put through much less trauma.

I AM EVER SO THANKFUL FOR THE BOUNCY BLOW-DRY BECOMING THE MUST HAVE LOOK. THE BANG ON TREND, BEACH WAVES, ALSO GETS ANOTHER BIG THANK YOU FROM ME. When it comes to roller blow-dries versus the poker straight version, again the latter causes more damage. With the roller blow dry, while the hair is still warm, you wrap it round a roller and leave to cool for an hour. This will give you a blow-dry that will see you right through your hangover. With a straight blow-dry you are keeping intense heat on the same piece of hair, while pulling at it over and over. I had to laugh the other day, I overheard a conversation between Lauren and her client. Lauren being the queen of bouncy blow-dries was asking her client want kind of finish she wanted. When the client requested a straight blow dry, Laurens face just dropped. ‘Straight???’ she squeaked, like it was a dirty word. These youngsters don’t remember the days when everyone wanted to look like Neil from The Young Ones.

Hair Play Another way to add volume without damage is using GL Tape extensions, which I am liking more and more. We recommended them recently to one of my regular clients because she wanted an extension service that she could reuse. First I applied a full head of highlights jam packed

How the mighty has fallen Now I can’t go without mentioning the show that Madge made of herself at the Eurovision song contest. I was and still am embarrassed on her behalf. It promised to be amazing. Madonna performing Like a Prayer at the campest TV show of the year. What she actually delivered was quite shocking and to be honest... flat. Each of the 41 contestants in the Eurovision Song Contest sang better. It wasn’t just that her vocals were pitchy, (hasn’t she heard of autotune?) or that her new song Future was lackluster, but watching a pop icon of her stature having to endure Eurovision stilted comedy was excruciating. AND what was with the eye patch? Did she think she was Johnny Depp. She would have been better with a gag. Let me tell you I was glad I’d a glass of brandy before I watched her performance.

With over five years’ experience at John Frieda in Mayfair and having been featured in Glamour magazine I knew he would be good. I didn’t, however, think he would be THAT good! His past clients Paloma Faith, Ellie Goulding and Queen Rania of Jordan have nothing on our Death-Star. I am sure Jeffery will love working and living in Marbella, having spent two summers in Ibiza managing the John Frieda salon based in the Nobu hotel, he will be used to our crazy and transient way of life. Jeffrey is an extremely skilled haircutter and stylist, who I know will be an asset

The client was delighted with the result, exclaiming she couldn’t feel them at all. This was as much to do with Lauren's placement as the product, her technique puts no pressure or strain on the hair. I think the before and after photos speak for themselves.

manipulations. Aleksandar Mitrin is a 21 year old Bulgarian photographer currently part of 2019s Mastered photography program, who structured the photography in an architectural style, focusing on harsh compositions with artistic elements and shadows.

They started working together after they discovered that they share quite a similar vision in terms of concepts and artistic style, and that they complement and enhance each other’s work.

We can download all kinds of random things from the internet, but imagine being able to download and ‘print’ actual food... 3D printed food was first highlighted when Nasa used the technology to make pizzas for their space crew, but it has since become a food trend worldwide and several pop up 3D print restaurants opened as a result. Foods like cereal, chocolate and crackers are easily 3D printed with intricate details. 3D printing food could also be better for the environment and make it easier to convert proteins from foods like algae, insects and vegetables into fine tasting cuisine!

What’s awesome about cars and 3D printing is that not only does it make it easier and more cost effective to produce concept cars, but it also gives the possibility of restoring classic cars that would be impossible to find parts for now. BMW gave us a perfect example of this when they renovated Elvis’s classic BMW 507 It’s still to hit the highstreets but 3D printed with brand new ‘old’ clothing has been around for a while and parts. While Norway is best known for its breath-taking fjords and mountain scenery, most outsiders do not realise that by utilising the natural wealth of their hinterland, its people have progressively turned their country into the most eco-friendly developed nation on the planet. With over 90 percent of its electricity generated by hydroelectric power, and a thriving offshore oil industry, Norway is a major exporter of electricity and oil, and its air quality is outstanding. Over 40% of the cars here are EVs with the percentage rising all the time. It was certainly a fitting backdrop for Mercedes to launch their first mass production EV. If volume sales are the key to recouping the enormous development costs of developing electric cars and their charging ecosystem then manufacturers have to package the technology in the type

of vehicle that people most want. Right now that is the compact SUV, a worldwide trend that shows no sign of slowing down. In 2017 Mercedes design chief Gorden Wagener told us that it was very important for the new EQ models to clearly express their power source in an authentic Mercedes way. With strong family styling ties to other Mercedes SUVs the EQC looks like a slightly larger, more muscular GLC, with a proportionately lower and sleeker roofline that gives the new electric SUV its sleeker, more rakish appearance. The EQC is built on the Mercedes MRA (rear drive) platform shared by the C-Class and GLC models. With the same 2,873mm wheelbase of the latter the EQC uses the rear floor panel from the GLC Coupe to achieve its longer rear overhang. It

thus ends up 105mm longer overall than the GLC at 4,761mm. Width (including door mirrors) and height are 2,096mm and 1,623mm respectively. Although it does not have a combustion engine the EQC still needs a radiator and liquid heat exchangers for battery cooling and air-conditioning. Look past chrome edged slats and you will see the powered flaps that open or close according to speed and temperature. That big grille emblazoned with the three-pointed star is indeed ‘authentic’. That said the two side intakes flanking the front spoiler have black plastic inserts with no actual function. Judicious use of black paint on the lower parts of the nose, side sills and rear valance visually reduce the body height. The full width rear light strip is only be applied to Mercedes models in the EQ range and helps the EQC stand out at night. The rest of the time, it visually helps to give the car a sleeker and more purposeful stance. Even with conventional door mirrors the EQC boasts a drag coefficient of 0.28, a dramatic improvement over the GLC’s 0.31, and a match for the Audi e-tron equipped with the optional exterior camera mirrors. A special aero package to be available later will further reduce drag to around 0.27.

Thanks to an asynchronous electric motor powering each axle the EQC has permanent four-wheel-drive. The total output of its two motors combined is 300kW, which equates to 408hp and 760Nm of torque. Developing peak power just off idle an electric motor delivers its maximum output near instantaneously, so the EQC has the strong and linear thrust appreciated by anyone who has driven an electric car. However, power-to-weight ratio is another issue, and the EQC and its 652 kg of Lithium-ion batteries tips the scales at a whopping 2,495 kg.

Top speed of the EQC is capped at 180 km/h. Electric cars deplete their batteries very rapidly indeed when pushed to high speeds, and while the EQC has a claimed NEDC range of 445-471 km, this is drastically eroded by high speed driving and big throttle openings. The Mercedes Lithium-ion battery was designed to be a compact package useable across different EQ vehicles and features a modular system comprising two modules with 48 cells, and four modules with 72 cells.

Charging times are always the bane of EVs and Mercedes has been working very hard to extract shorter times from their dedicated three-phase high performance DC charging system. This can apply a 10-80% charge in just 40 minutes, while the domestic AC socket still takes a yawning 11 hours to bring the big 80 kWh battery from 10-100%.

If you own a current Mercedes with the MBUX system like the A-Class and GLE, the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;floatingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; super widescreen display in EQC will find you in familiar territory. Thus, the dashboard is layered with more individual elements than you will find in other Mercedes SUVs. For instance, the central vents are housed

The air vents contained in this moulding and repeated vertically either side of the dashboard are part of the new EQ design language. Like the ribs on the tops of the front doors these appear to be machined from aluminium but are actually plastic mouldings with a metallic coating.

Using the Mercedes me App route planning responds dynamically to changes in its parameters and can be used on-board or off-board. The driver can pre-plan a route, enter a departure time and set the interior temperature to warm or cool the cabin according to the ambient temperature. And of course if the car is charging at the time this can be done with no drain on the battery.

The seats are typical Mercedes in their design, comfort, and range of adjustability, and the driving position and steering wheel controls are also familiar. In the rear compartment the bench seat offers plenty of legroom and headroom, and the EQC with its quiet cabin will make a very good VIP chauffeur vehicle.

The intelligent navigation will plan the route taking into account stops, charge status of the battery, charging stations, the weather, topography and traffic. As the system will always find the optimum combination with as few charging stops as possible it will also seek out quickcharging stations.

The boot holds 500 litres and expands to 1,460 litres with the rear seats folded flat. In parenthesis the GLC offers 550 litres and 1,600 litres of space respectively, reflecting the slightly lower loading floor and taller roofline of the conventionally powered car.

Those familiar with the AI voice recognition function of MBUX can use phrases like “Hey Mercedes, show me the nearest charging station,” or “Charge the vehicle to 85%.” And the system will respond accordingly.

Electric cars that have been on sale up till now have largely existed in isolation as self contained EVs. However, when you press the Start button in the Mercedes EQC the “Electric Intelligence” features that make this car part of a mobility ecosystem that goes far beyond the vehicle itself become readily apparent.

A S YO U W O U L D E X P E C T T H E E Q C C A B I N I S A H AV E N O F QUIETNESS AND C ALM. Standard double glazing, front bulkhead insulation originally designed to keep out diesel engine noise and special layers of

insulation around the rear electric motor and wheel arches markedly reduce e-motor whine and road noise. The EQC comes with 19-inch wheels as standard with 20 and 21-inch options. The 21-inch tyres feature a layer of foam insulation to help reduce rolling noise. Our test car had 20-inch wheels shod with 295/50ZR20 Pirelli Scorpion tires and proved very quiet on most road surfaces. This means you can have conversations at comfortably normal levels and don’t have to crank up the volume on the excellent optional Burmester audio system to hear all the fine details. It also makes for stress-free journeys, since excessive road noise is a recognised source of fatigue. Secondary ride at low speeds is good on the 20-inch footwear, with fine poise when you step up the pace. The base 19inch wheels would no doubt improve this further while trading some grip at speed. The relatively low centre of gravity conferred by the combination of the battery pack under the floor and the self-levelling ability of the rear axle air suspension keeps the roll angle in check. The electric power steering is nicely weighted and its turn-in rate perfectly aligned to the chassis, which helps to deliver a high level of driver confidence.

Having an electric motor on each axle results in a different 4WD experience compared to an internal combustion engine that drives both axles through a gearbox, propshaft and differentials. Electric drive means no pumping losses and the ability of the electronics to seamlessly alter the torque distribution to optimise traction and efficiency in near real time. On the efficiency score the engineers configured the two motors differently to address the polar opposites of high performance and battery range. Thus, the front motor is configured for maximum efficiency in the low to medium speed ranges while the rear motor is set up to deliver the maximum dynamic experience. Mercedes set up a pedestrian avoidance test for us to determine how the car handles in extremis, and the way the motors are configured does indeed make it feel more agile than its massive kerb weight would suggest. In place of the PRND modes of a normal automatic transmission the EQC offers Comfort, ECO, Max Range, Sport and Individual programs. In a conventional car, the right and left steering wheel paddles trigger up and downshifts respectively. In the EQC the right paddle reduces the level of brake recuperation while the left paddle increases it. Pulling the paddles sequentially cycles you through the following modes: D Auto (recuperation via ECO Assist to suit the situation), D + (coasting), D (low recuperation), D - (medium recuperation) and D - - (high recuperation). Since recuperative deceleration is often enough that the brakes are not required in this makes one-pedal driving possible in many situations. The EQC 400 4Matic is good to drive and easy to live with, but in the brave new world of EVs that is simply not enough. As customers grapple with the concept of moving from internal combustion engine cars to electric power they will be glad to know that Mercedes has plotted a very well conceived course to help them. So when you buy a Mercedes EQC you are plugging into a well thought

out eco-system of intelligently linked charging stations that appear on your satellite-navigation data to make all your journeys easier and more efficient. Some of the big worries for owners of hybrid and electric cars are reliability, warranty and residual values, and here Mercedes has pushed the boat out. Their standard EQC “Maintenance Service” package covers all maintenance work up to six years or 150,000 km in Europe, with particular attention paid to electrical and safety related components. In addition to this is the six years or six times “Pick-up & Delivery” service. With each service scheduled at your convenience the car will be picked up and dropped back at your home, office, or anywhere within a defined radius of the dealership.

Beyond this are the customer paid packages like the “Vehicle Warranty Extension” that takes battery cover to eight years or 160,000 km. There is even a “Wearing Parts Package” that includes replacement of consumables such as brake linings, brake discs and wiper blades so you know what your costs will be up to the six-year point. This will help to maintain the EQC’s residual value with the next owner better able to gauge running costs. In terms of its design, dynamics and supporting driver aids the Mercedes EQC 400 4Matic is a very well conceived and resolved car whose debut will no doubt have many people signing up to an electric future. Most of all we are pleased that Mercedes has put so much into the EQ support structure, which bodes well for the people who take the plunge.

WHAT DO OUR SKELETONS TELL US ABOUT OUR MODERN LIVES? (...) IN 300 YEARS TIME, WHAT WILL ARCHAEOLOGISTS DEDUCE ABOUT CONTEMPORARY EXISTENCE?

n 1940 a Dutch anatomist studying the body of a rather unique young goat made a discovery which came to revolutionise our understanding of the human skeleton. The recently departed billy had been born minus normal front legs, but the plucky critter showed true determination once adopted by a veterinary institute and placed in a grassy field. Before long, he developed a style of locomotion somewhere between a kangaroo and a hare, drawing his hind legs forwards underneath his body, then jumping semi-upright. Despite the success of his adaptation, an unfortunate accident saw him off not long after his first birthday. What a post-mortem revealed was that the animal's skeleton had actually morphed to facilitate its novel mode of travel, with thickening of the bones in his hips and legs, elongation of those in his ankles and abnormal angling of his hips and toes to accommodate a more upright posture. In a matter of months his frame had taken on characteristics of animals typically evolved to hop. The discovery flew in the face of centuries of perceived scientific wisdom that the body's bones were fixed, growing in a predictable way according to our biological inheritance. Today, it's an established reality that our skeletons are in fact malleable, alive with blood vessels and in a perpetual state of flux, continually broken down and rebuilt as we travail our modern environments. Whilst DNA sets a rough skeletal template, our bones adapt to the dictates of our lives. In the case of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Strong Men of Guamâ&#x20AC;?, lives of burden left an indelible mark in remains which initially stupefied those who unearthed them. In 1924,

the skeleton of a “gigantic” male on the Pacific island of Tinian astounded its discoverers. Nicknamed Taotao Tagga (“man of Tagga”) by archaeologists in reference to the island's mythologically super-powered chief Taga, his skull, arm and lower leg bones suggested he had been immensely strong and unusually tall. The findings were dated to the 16th or 17th Century. Far from an anomaly, subsequent skeletons unearthed in the vicinity suggested a whole tribe of tall, burly strongmen, initially supporting local legends of colossal ancient rulers capable of extraordinary feats of brawn. A study of their surroundings soon gave a more grounded explanation – The men of Guam were grafters, constructing their homes with enormous rocks and huge stone pillars. The largest of these measured five metres and weighed some thirteen tonnes! Where myth inferred mysticism, reality suggested sheer hard work and exercise. So what do our skeletons tell us about our modern lives? How do we measure up to those supermen of the Pacific? Provided we pull ourselves out of our ecological nosedive such to be around in 300 years time, what will archaeologists deduce about contemporary existence? Well...... we're forming weird lumps on ourselves from looking at our phones too much.... Yep, named the “external occipital protuberance”, the spiky growth where the neck meets the base of the skull – have a feel, you may well have one – has become much more commonplace

in recent years and the experts think our dependence on our smartphones is to blame. Heads are heavy - even those with seemingly little between the ears. Whilst our necks have evolved to support the roughly 4.5 kg of bone, muscle, recentlywhitened teeth and pouty lips, they evolved to support them eyes pointing forward, not staring down into our laps as we ignore everything and everyone that's not got 4G. A 2018 survey found Android users spend an average of 3 hrs 42 minutes per day gazing slack-jawed at their devices.t Stick another hour on that if your phone has an apple on it!!?? If those figures sound a bit far-fetched, congratulate yourself you're clearly not one of the sad bastards pushing our average usage up by taking part in every time-wasting survey that pops up on their screen. Nevertheless, glance around any bus or train carriage and you already know most people will be gawking straight down.... and those looking up are only doing so because they're using the screen as a fucking mirror to check there's nothing in their teeth.... plus hopefully the driver. So where the mightily-skeletoned folk from those Pacific islands may well have benefitted from bodily adaptations such as “Pillar pecs” or “Boulder biceps”, modern society is increasingly afflicted with “text neck”. Shoulder, neck and back pain, headaches and increased spinal curvature are the price many of us pay for letting Mark know we can come

These days we have to strap Fitbits to our wrists to encourage us to walk to the toilet instead of using our micro scooter. Any member of the ancient tribes who spent 3 hrs and 42 minutes per day not hunting or gathering would likely grow hungry and die, but since we've altered the whole “survival of the fittest” paradigm, those same blights on the gene pool need merely dedicate a few minutes of that time to having Deliveroo courier sustenance straight to their gobs. Some experts think this new neck growth is the skeleton's answer to our constantly drooping heads, effectively spreading the load across a little more scaffolding. It's hard to know just what the future holds for our bones but thanks in part to a hopping goat, we now know they'll adapt to reflect their usage and the duress of our environment. Off the beaten track... he build up for this next stop on the (imaginary) itinerary had been predominantly centred around our excitement towards the food. We are foodobsessed, not in a gorging obese kind of way but from a ‘can’t get enough of new flavours, cuisines, and cultural influence’ approach. So Vietnam had been high on our impatience-to-eat-there list for many a month. Arriving in Ho Chi Minh without a local clue was tough, you want to avoid suggestions from the big name online advisors however a sprawling city is a tricky place to navigate when you wish to unearth the best of local delicacies. Fortunately street carts provide you with a guideline as to what the people eat, from here you can scour and search for restaurants and eateries offering similar fare. We weren't particularly successful in old Saigon and actually ended up having Dim Sum at one point in desperation for something authentic and underpriced. Mui Ne was our next destination, we took a five hour bus ride in some very interesting seats slash beds and luckily got the top back row of five all together. Here we spent a lengthy ten days resting at the beach, renowned

for its epic kite surfing conditions there were plenty of gusty days and having chosen a resort away from the town our restaurant options were limited and a little underwhelming. So far, so not what we were picturing from the food-angle but sliding down the enormous moonscapelike red dunes was great fun. The beaches were sadly very littered and not much seemed to be being done about the pollution. The children and I spent a few hours pulling plastic from the shore in the hope it wouldn't end up back in the South China Sea. After heading back to Ho Chi Minh City our next port of call was a 17 hour train ride away in Hoi An, we had heard amazing things from many travellers as to the wealth of spectacles and range of restaurants in the area and the bustling market town on a river did not disappoint. The little boats all lit up at night, couriering devoted tourists up and down made for a pleasant, if not slightly overcrowded, place to stop and everything-watch. Many overpriced restaurants met our path which we avoided as non-tourists (we are travelling, not on holiday and have to learn the art of avoiding getting lured into a false reality)

and headed for the backstreets where you could hear locals wailing alongside their portable karaoke machines. This was a little more of the Vietnamese cuisine we were expecting, but still not quite the authentic version that you would receive in a home kitchen. Still, we spent a week here exploring on bicycles, finding gorgeous little places to stop on the river to cool off and have a cold drink, sometimes served from a person’s own kitchen - it was difficult to tell whether some places were actually establishments or if you were sitting on someone’s patio furniture; either way they never seemed to mind. Hoi An has some fantastic high end resorts and hotels as well as cute little home-stays, which we opted for and immersed ourselves in a bit of local community. The kids were playing football with the locals right away and cycling around laughing with them in the dusty streets and municipal ground which backed onto our homestay, we could sit and watch them becoming part of the lifestyle from the balcony. On we went to Hanoi with its interestingly persistent French influence; baguettes and small groomed dogs aplenty. Here we really felt submerged in a combination of sightseeing with other foreigners and

The War Remnants Museum, Ho Chi Minh City - you will probably struggle to leave there without feeling disturbed, horrified and shedding some tears. An absolute must experience in my opinion. There was so much we were not told or taught about the atrocities that became standard during that horrific war and this place personifies and brings it all home like you wouldn’t believe. Find someone who sells bun rieu cau’ because it will change your culinary life. Try Cha ca la Vongon - a traditional dish of fried fish with herbs and rice noodles You must try the ‘no daa’ vietnamese for used drip coffee - just say ‘no daa’. The rest is up to you, it’s all about personal taste… track-crossing to local neighbourhoods; where some welcomed you, and others saw a dollar sign and disappointingly charged twice the cost for a Banh Mi (filled baguette) than they did in the tourist areas. A stunning city nonetheless with vast diversity and a plethora of monumental landmarks, a far cry from the confusion and mental smog of Ho Chi Minh. The eventuality of our culinary expectations to this point was unfortunate in that we needed to have had a guide to be able to find what we were searching for. Lucky for us in Hanoi an old friend, having lived there for a few years, kindly handed us his sacred ‘black book bible’ of places to eat around the city. Some of which were just incredible. We love a backstreet, old lady making one dish only type place where you have to crawl into what seems like her living room and sit on tiny stools; and we found some sights and tastes to knock the senses into tomorrow. Finally we felt as though we had tasted real Vietnamese food. In particular the Bun Cha we experienced in an exclusively local people place (it’s kind of fun being a novelty in a place people would least expect to see you) which is basically noodles in broth but not like anything else you’ve ever tasted. And you’ve got to try Cha ca at Cha Ca La Vong in the Old Quarter, if for no other reason than that is the only dish they serve Cha ca is pieces of local red river fish (carp or catfish) marinated with turmeric then fried at the table with heaps of dill and spring onion, and served over rice noodles with peanuts and a dipping sauce (mam tom tong); there is nothing that good, fullstop. Even the incredible culinary offerings of Hanoi couldn’t suffocate the inability to cross a road without fearing for the

kids’ extremities; it was getting overwhelming. And having no pavement for walking - mainly they’re used as land extensions for shops and restaurants, or places to park your motorbike - we had had our fill of traffic dodging and the sounds of horns and feeling like there are just too many people in the world; it was time for some landscape and peace (and hopefully more good food). A suggestion from a friend met our fancy, Ninh Binh, it looked stunning, there were barely any cars and local food was on the cards. We eventually opted for the even quieter and smaller location very nearby named Tam Coc. We found a bungalow hotel on the river which was everything and more that we needed and hoped for. Tranquil, and a banquet for the eyes, the natural beauty and unrivalled greenery of this place will never leave me. We rode bicycles everywhere, every day along rivers, through rice fields, and through some of the most stunning rocky valleys I have ever seen. We took river tours and marvelled at all the rowers’ ability to paddle with their feet - they do it to be able to have hands free to manoeuvre any walls or caves. If you got a guide rowing by hand, you’ve got a novice! One day we rode out to a spot I can only describe as a purposely groomed Utopia, it was as though someone had the foresight to convert this unbelievably

stunning land into a potential site for another world if the rest of it went to pieces. There is a bird sanctuary, natural underground caves to paddle through, walks and hills with incredible natural beauty that remains untouched, there are then some seriously thought out areas where literally every fruit and vegetable you can think of are growing, flower gardens, beehives, and all being tended to night and day. There is more land being shifted to make way for further agriculture, beautiful pagodas dot certain sections and there is also an event centre on site which was the worst part about it as it brought a commercial invader to the otherwise trade-free zone. I am inclined to investigate further as to who this utopian love child belongs to and what their plans for it are! We extended our stay three times in Tam Coc because it was a literal breath of fresh air; the next leg of the journey was another train trek back from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh before flying to the Philippines so we took in as much clean living as we could.

WHERE THE US FLAG DOESN’T FLY

uietly taking my ease at a venta near Carmona, having just officiated at a wedding in its magnificent Parador, and therefore suitably be-collared, I observed what was obviously an American making his way towards me.

“Excuse”, he said, “Moron”. I felt somewhat taken aback. To call an inoffensive elderly cleric a moron perhaps overstepped the bounds of normal propriety. “Moron?” he said again, but this time a questioning inflection crept into the equation. “Moron?” I repeated. “Yes, Moron, where is?” he said. The penny dropped. “Ah!” I said, “you are looking for Morón-de-laFrontera.” “Ah yes!” he said “You speak English!” And so we settled to a pleasant and informative conversation, during which I outlined the use of the word “moron” in English. It transpired that he was not actually seeking the town, but the vast “Aeródromo Militar Vázquez Sagastizabal” situated to the north west of the town and about 50 kilometres from Sevilla. He wanted to follow in the footsteps of President Barack Obama who visited the base in 2016.

Construction of this base began in 1940, and the following year saw it operational in the training of fighter pilots for the Spanish Air Force. With the foundation of NATO in 1948 the United States began to look for bases in Europe from which

they could bolster the weakened countries of Europe from falling under the influence of the Soviet Union. Spain was still suffering from the effects of the Civil War, and Generalisimo Franco was desperately seeking foreign aid to shore up his faltering economy. On the 26th September 1953 he signed the “Madrid Pacts” with President Eisenhower (pictured left) whereby four military bases in Spain were ceded to the United States. These were the air bases of Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid), Zaragoza, Morón-dela-Frontera, and the naval base of Rota (Cádiz). With the ending of the “Cold War”, the United States began a policy of gradual withdrawal, and withdrew from Torrejón de Ardoz in 1991 and Zaragoza in 2004. It remains in Morón-de-la-Frontera and Rota. The Americans pumped considerable sums of money into Morón-de-la-Frontera, and

commenced operations from the base in 1958. Initially under US sovereignty and operating under US law within its boundaries, the base reverted to Spain in 1963 with the signing of the “Joint Declaration”. This Declaration recognises Spain as a strategic ally of the United States. This alliance has grown over the years until in June 2015 the Spanish government signed an agreement with the United States whereby the US military presence in Spain at the base became permanent with 2,200 soldiers, 500 American civilians, and 26 aircraft located there. Increased installations allowed for possible military interventions in Africa. Number eleven wing of the Spanish Air Force, equipped with the latest generation of Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, is also stationed there. Naval Station Rota (NAVSTA Rota) is a Spanish naval base covering some 24 square kilometres in the Province of Cádiz, commanded by a Spanish Rear Admiral, but fully funded by the United States.

SITUATED HALFWAY BETWEEN SOUTHWEST ASIA AND THE UNITED STATES, NAVSTA HOUSES THE LARGEST AMERICAN MILITARY COMMUNITY IN SPAIN. The US government regards NAVSTA as the key to the Mediterranean, whilst it was used as a refuelling stop by C-5 and C-141 aircraft in the Gulf War in 1991. 2001 saw a busy year as the most active base during the invasion of Afghanistan, and this was mirrored in 2003 with Iraq. The base provides support to both the US Sixth Fleet units in the Mediterranean and to USAF Air Mobility Command units transiting to both Germany and Asia. In

the 1970s it saw the refit and replenishment of US submarines with the Polaris missile, although this facility is now located in Georgia at King’s Bay. At its peak in the 1980s NAVSTA Rota was home to 16,000 sailors and their families, although this has now dwindled to some 4000. Originally home to US Submarine Squadron 16 (SUBRON 16), this left in July 1979, and the base housed two permanently deployed aviation squadrons, Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron 2 and Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 22, until the early ‘90s. This was the period when a patrol squadron of P-3 Orion aircraft regularly tracked Soviet naval vessels and submarines in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean. The Naval Station also has an important peacetime rôle in supporting NASA Space Shuttle missions. It also remotely controls the antenna of Torreta de Guardamar, Alicante. This is a 370-metre tall radio mast erected by the US Navy near Guardamar del Segura in 1962 and is the tallest architectural structure in both the Iberian peninsula and the European Union since the height reduction of Belmont TV Mast. It is used to transmit orders to submerged submarines. Originally under the control of the US navy, it has now been transferred to the Spanish Navy,

and is used for transmitting orders to submerged submarines stationed in Cartagena during their operations. Regular readers of this admirable magazine may recollect reading about the day the US “nuked” Spain. Two hydrogen bombs were accidentally dropped near the village of Palomares. One spread radioactive content over the entire area, which is evident still today, whilst the second was lost 20 kilometres off the coast, resulting in searches being undertaken by 12,000 military personnel over ninety days, until the troops were guided to the spot by a local fisherman. As a result of this incident, US bombers were forbidden to use the base facilities, and it was not until 1983 that they were permitted to return. Nowadays the emphasis is on cargo freight rather than a warlike payload, although the United States navy still maintains a watchful presence. Four Ægis warships bolster the missile defence of NATO as part of the European Phased Adapative Approach, whilst since 2015 four US destroyers are permanently forward deployed to Rota. Despite this, the place remains technically a Spanish navy base under the Spanish flag. The US flag is not displayed without the express permission of the Spanish Rear Admiral.

Chef Alfonso Lillo talks Michelin stars, respecting the planet and how BREATHE brought him to Marbella, as well as an insight into AIR, the final piece of the puzzle.

What attracted you to the BREATHE™ concept? I had never been to Marbella before I joined BREATHE™. It was entirely the project, its concept and the mission that excited me. Whilst previously

Can you share with us a bit about your career to date, before you joined BREATHE™? My career began in Bournemouth at The Royal Bar where I was working as a Kitchen Porter. I had been studying economics, but being amongst the bustle of the kitchen, I just knew I wanted to be a chef, much to my parents’ disappointment! Whilst at the time they felt I was wasting my studies, my economics background has proven hugely advantageous in my career as 50% of my job is budgets and working with numbers, it’s not all in the kitchen! I studied Culinary Arts at the University of London before embarking on 15 years working in the city for Gordon Ramsay and at various Michelin star awarded venues. I have also worked as the private chef to the King of Qatar and most recently at the best boutique hotel in Palma de Mallorca, Sant Francesc, before coming to BREATHE™.

chefs all strived for Michelin stars, now I feel people are starting to care more about the food itself. Where it comes from… the effect it has on the environment, the quality etc. I loved the idea of being part of something that had the utmost respect for our planet, whilst still offering the best quality you can buy.

What can customers expect from the food at BREATHE™? Real, quality products. The most important aspect to me is that the products speak for themselves, they don’t need elaborate cooking methods or decedent sauces as they are the best quality products you can buy. My focus is on the product itself, whether its meat, fish or fresh vegetables.

What can we expect from AIR when it opens? We wanted to offer something a little different, there are an abundance of sushi restaurants in the area, so we decided to go down a different route with a raw menu comprising of tartars, ceviches and carpaccio. The concept is sharing plates and the food is designed to accompany the impressive drinks menu. It won’t be an extensive menu, a small collection of quality, raw produce, and like nothing you have seen before in Marbella. And finally, we couldn’t leave without hearing your recommendations? Hmmm, in BREATHE™ I would say the Tomahawk Steak or if you’re a fish fan, the Seared Tuna Tataki with Pineapple Salsa and Seaweed Salad or the Salmon Tiradito! Bettina, our resident foodie offers her insider knowledge on how to stay healthy and introduce more plant based foods into our diets.

We all know food has an intrinsic ability to make us happy. There’s nothing quite like the excitement you get when you see your plate making its way to your table in a restaurant, or the contentment that comes with the first bite of homemade pancakes on a Sunday morning. But research is emerging to show that what we eat can have far more of an effect on our emotions and mental health than just transient happiness when we taste our favourite flavours. In fact, to understand just how important food can be to our mental wellbeing, we need to travel past our tongues, down through our bellies and into our guts to take a look at the wondrous phenomenon that is our microbiome.

What is The Microbiome The gut microbiome is an enormous ecosystem of organisms including bacteria, yeasts, fungi, viruses and protozoans that resides in our intestines. Your gut contains around 100 trillion bacteria which, among many other things, help you to break down food and toxins, strengthen your immune system, and make vitamins and hormones. The gut has such a big influence on so many of our bodily systems that scientists are now increasingly treating it as an organ in its own right. Science is now also suggesting that levels of serotonin, our 'happy hormone', within our brains are regulated by the amount of bacteria in the gut, particularly during childhood.

Because your hormones are produced and regulated by your gut microbiome, if your microbiome is depleted or out of balance, your ability to regulate and produce essential happy hormones will be impacted. This means that what goes on in our bellies is likely to have a direct impact on our mood. It’s pretty empowering stuff! Along with our environment, stress levels and early life, food plays a huge role in how healthy our microbiome is and how our mood is affected as a result. When we eat, we’re not only eating for ourselves, but for the billions of microbes in our gut, too. There’s a reason I named my book Happy Food—because the recipes in it not only fill your soul and taste buds with joy, they also help keep your gut bugs, and in turn your mind, happy too! So how can we help keep our gut thriving with mood enhancing friendly bacteria? There are many ways to positively influence our microbiome, one of the easiest—and my favourite— lies in plants!

Plant Power! Different plants provides different types of fibre, or ‘prebiotics’, available to different species of our good gut bacteria. These different bacteria ferment prebiotics in order to replicate themselves to perpetuate and populate their species within our guts. One study found that people who get more than 30 different types of plants onto their plates each week have the most resilient, most diverse, and least pro-inflammatory microbiota. And interestingly, studies have also shown that a diet plentiful in prebiotics might play a part in the reduction of anxiety. A healthy gut comprised of a wide variety of microbiota means that when one species of bacteria is wiped out for some reason, there are others in there ready and able to take the reins to help prevent us from becoming unwell, undernourished, fatigued, and stressed. Western guts, though, are becoming increasingly sparse in species within, meaning we are more susceptible to illness from invading bacteria and yeasts. So by choosing lots of different types of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds and changing them up regularly, we can actively nurture all of the important types of bacteria needed for a thriving and diverse microbiota. I love gaining plant inspiration by visiting exotic local markets when I travel to hunt out unusual fare to add to my plate and get my good bacteria feeling happy and diversified!

Eat the Rainbow A good way to ensure you are getting in a wide variety of different plants is to fill your plate with colour. The more colour you’re eating, the more vitamins, nutrients, minerals and happy hormones your bacteria will be able to produce for your body to use. Each differently coloured plant food represents the different range of bioactive compounds found within it. One thing you’ll notice in Happy Food is the spectrums of vibrant colour I add to every dish. Give my Bibimbap Korean Rice Bowl (p.86) a go. All those differently coloured plants indicate that it is full of prebiotic goodness to help you populate your gut with lots of brain beneficial bacteria.

Ferment to Feel Good Whereas prebiotics feed the bacteria in our guts, probiotics are strains of bacteria (that thrive on prebiotics) which help populate healthy gut flora in symbiosis with prebiotic fibres. Both are needed in a healthy diet to maintain a diverse, happiness-promoting gut. Probiotics include Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis that are found in ‘live’ yoghurts and fermented foods. It is easier than you might think to make your own fermented foods to help keep your happy hormones flourishing. Try my Soljee’s Kimchi (p.124) or quick Sweet and Sour Pickles (p.125) to create your own fermented goodies at home, and my probiotic rich Cashew Yoghurt

(p.140) and Macadamia Ricotta (p.144) will give you a hit of happiness straight to your gut as well as to your taste buds!

Eat Mindfully Stress has an immediate impact on our moods, and also a fundamental impact on the health of our gut and its ability to regulate our mental states. Just think about how your tummy turns when you remember a looming deadline, or how you feel physically sick when you face confrontational situations. That is how directly and immediately stress can affect what goes on in our bellies. If we eat when we are feeling stressed or our minds are somewhere other than on what’s on our plate, digestion is compromised, creating an unnecessary stress response within the body. This is one of the reasons I promote a fuss-free approach to diet and eating. I believe that if we are constantly stressing

about whether what we are eating fits within the confines of a specific label, be that ‘vegan’, ‘Paleo’, ‘Keto’, etc., then we are creating a breeding ground for poor digestion, compromised absorption, and an unhappy gut. A simple and easy-to-remember way to calm your nervous system and bring yourself to the present moment to aid efficient digestion is to develop a mindful eating practice. I teach mindful eating and pre-dinner mindfulness exercises on my Bettina’s Kitchen Retreats to calm our minds and systems before we tuck into our plant powered meals. I find it so empowering that we’re able to take control of our own physical and mental health simply by being aware of what we put on our plates, and that something as fun and exciting as food really can have such a profound influence on how we feel and function.

The 2018 vintage is ready to drink!

Zing! The first bottles of the 2018 Rioja vintage, with wines from a few other Spanish regions, are now on shop and winery shelves. These are white wines harvested last September, matured over the winter then bottled in late winter, many in March. They are young and often brightly fruity and energetic, meant to be drunk within a couple of years. Look out for new grape varieties, small in quantity in 2019 but fun to try.

Rioja’s official wine board in April of this year declared 2018 to be a “good” vintage, despite early uncertainty due to weather problems. The board samples several thousand wines; for 2018 It highlights the quality of the whites, saying they have very good structure and aromas.

Vintage is a great word, even if you don’t know much about wine, but you should know what you are talking about.

My first understanding of the word had nothing to do with wine. We used to visit a museum with old cars when I was a kid, and my parents would chuckle about how the Fords of their youth were now vintage cars. I equated the cars and my aging parents (I’m the youngest of four) with antiques, so for a long time I thought the word meant simply “old” or old-fashioned. While that’s true for non-wine objects, vintage remains very much a wine word. It has its origins in Old French meaning harvest time, and it has been in use since the 15th century to mean mainly that: wines harvested in a given year.

The exceptions – Port & champagne

from great vintages: you get the idea. A 1985 Chateau Margaux is going to set you back far more than a 2017.

Vintage in wine terms has a specific meaning – with a couple of important exceptions.

It’s not just about money, though. Mass market industrially-produced wines are made to taste alike from one year to the next; the large wineries that make these adjust and tweak them to make sure drinkers don’t find a change from one year to the next. Sadly, you’ll never get a great or even a very good wine this way, or a wine that can develop into something finer over time. These are very ordinary alcoholic beverages, the kind you get for a couple of euros at the supermarket, designed to give you a quick high and a lingering headache.

Port muddied what vintage means by using the term to officially designate rare wines made only in exceptionally good years and according to strict regulations. And yet you will find Port wines listing the vintage for virtually every year. These are known as Single Quinta Ports. Mike Hall, who writes for MVH Wines in the UK, notes that only 3% of all Port is labelled Vintage. “A Vintage Port is a wine made from a single, exceptional year that spends no longer than two years in barrel before being bottled. This stipulation as to how long a Vintage Port may spend in barrel may seem odd but Ports age far more quickly in barrel than in bottle.”

If what you want is wine that tastes good and that you can match with foods for

a wow! meal, you need wines that have been made skilfully, taking into account the grape variety and soil/sun exposure/ climate that make up the terroir, as well as the weather that creates the vintage. If you have a good vintage wine it will age into something far more interesting than the teenager it was on bottling day, feet too long and nose too big for the lanky body. This doesn’t mean you need to wait five years to drink it, although if you have a decent place to cellar bottles you might want to. I recently opened a bottle of 2008 Syrah at home that was exquisite – every sip we had with grilled lamb chops that night prompted a word of praise. We had the same wine when it was two years old and again when it was five years old, and each time it was better.

Portugal is perhaps responsible for planting the idea that vintage means quality, but champagne, too, uses it that way. Champagne is traditionally a blend of different grapes but also different vintages, with “reserve” wine from earlier harvests accounting for up to 50% of the blend. “Vintage” on the label is used in the same way as in Porto: for single-harvest wine from rare, exceptional years. New World wineries did their bit in the 20th century to confuse the European notion of vintage because these countries typically have fewer weather extremes from one vintage to another, so the need to include the vintage on the label has never been as great.

Why vintage matters Money comes into play here, of course. You only have to recall the outlandish prices paid for some Bordeaux wines

Vintage in Spain Vintage has a special sense in Spain, in particular in Rioja. The wine board makes an official declaration every year about the quality of the vintage. New Rioja rules went into effect in January 2019 that allow wineries to make single grape white wines from more grape varieties and label them with the grape: Chardonnay, Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc, Garnacha Blanca, Malvasía, Maturana Blanca, Tempranillo Blanca and Turruntés. Viura will continue to be the region’s most traditional and widely available white grape for several years, but the new options mean more fun for wine drinkers.

A mixed sushi platter as vibrant in colour as in flavour

was the next to arrive… well fresh sushi by the beach, what more can I say. La Sala by the Sea offers small, medium and large platters, so you can opt for sushi as your starter, main meal or even to share amongst the table, as we did. Next up was Sala’s iconic Chateaubriand, I have sampled a fair few restaurants on the coast and I have to say I am yet to find a Chateaubriand that rivals in quality; everything from the succulent meat to the creamy pepper sauce to the roasted vine tomatoes bursting in flavour was impeccable. The heavenly Crispy Duck with Pancakes and Hoisin Sauce (another

Sala speciality) and the Kaprow – Stir Fried Beef with Chilli and Basil concluded our evening selection. What truly amazed me was the diverse menu and how each dish excelled individually. On this occasion I couldn’t even pick a shining star as they all shone as bright as each other, all I would say is don’t miss the chance to sample this exquisite beachside dining experience this summer. SUMMER FAIR IN MARBELLA RAISES FUNDS FOR HOMELESS CHARITY A summer fair at the British International School of Marbella has raised €1,555 euros for Hogar Betania, a hostel run by volunteers that cares for homeless people in the border town of La Linea, next to Gibraltar. The charity also provides food to about 520 poor families and tries

to put young people into apprenticeships. Families and staff took part to raise the funds and enjoyed plenty of food and drink with live music and performances, including a ukulele orchestra from Year 4.
