British Columbia is an amazing place for the automotive enthusiast. No other place in the world offers winding coastal roads with some of the most breathtaking views of the glistening ocean, driving by gushing waterfalls and lush green forests, with some mighty peaks and brilliant white glaciers as a backdrop. The same day, you can be in Canada’s only desert, visit wineries, or take a ferry with a good chance of seeing whales, sea lions and Bald Eagles. And nothing is better than experiencing it from behind the steering wheel of a sporty yet luxurious convertible. Wait - something is better! How about the very same convertible offers room for the family or friends, and is impeccable even in the winter thanks to an all-wheel drive system? Welcome to the BMW M850i xDrive Cabriolet.
After a 2-decade absence, BMW revived the 8-Series in late 2018, starting with the M850i coupe. Several other models were added to the lineup in 2019, which now includes coupes and convertibles, the M8, M8 Competition, as well as a full-size four-door Gran Coupe sedan. We already had the chance to experience the hardtop version and couldn’t wait to finally take the convertible for a spin.
The BMW design team managed to keep the flowing lines of the coupe, albeit with an electrically retractable soft-top. You will immediately notice the superb acoustic insulation of the multi-layered roof, which opens and closes in just 15 seconds. It can be activated with the car travelling at up to 50 km/h. However, the magic starts when the top disappears under its cover with the two subtle domes, reminiscent of classical sports cars. BMW’s new twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 starts on the push of a button, reaching 100 km/h in less than 4 seconds. The power, fed via an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, is managed by BMW’s xDrive system, while multiple drive modes are onboard to help tweak the throttle response, transmission settings, steering settings, and suspension settings.
The 8 Series Convertible’s interior design is more or less identical to that of the standard 8 Series Coupe. High-end materials pervade throughout, such as Merino leather, metal inlays, and aluminum trim. Contrast stitching adds extra visual goodness to the supportive sport seats, which, when ordered with the Executive Package, have an integrated neck warmer and cooled or heated ventilation. Add the heated steering wheel, and you can put the top down and enjoy your convertible even in colder weather.
The BMW M850i xDrive Convertible comes with several additional visual accents and can be further individualized to the customer’s desire. Call Brian Jessel BMW to schedule your test drive.
