TED WILLIAMS FINE-ART CATALOGUE

The best jazz photographer in the world JULIAN “CANNONBALL” ADDERLEY

Ted Williams (1925-2009) first heard jazz on the radio as a youngster in the 1930s in Wichita, Kansas. Williams merged his love of music and photography and moved to Chicago in the 1940s where he captured unguarded photographic studies of some of the era’s greatest jazz musicians. His work appeared in major international publications including Time, Newsweek, Look, Playboy and Ebony. His coverage of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival landed him a spectacular 21-page layout in DownBeat magazine. Williams was active on the jazz scene from the late 1940s until the late 1970s and photographed many of the greats in jazz. Williams’ historic archive runs to more than 100,000 images and comprises perhaps the most intimate and complete collection of Jazz’s greatest musicians at work, rest and play.

Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker At The Pershing Ballroom, 1949 Media Name: TW_CP001

The band had been playing for some time and Charlie Parker had not arrived. There was a little unrest among the fans out front – after all, it had been billed as “Charlie Parker with Dizzy Gillespie and his Big Band.” After a rather anxious intermission, Dizzy introduces Bird and the excitement level reached fever pitch! They blew together – or alternating solos – traded fours all with that thundering big band behind them. Aware of Bird’s penchant to wander, Dizzy did not give him much opportunity to escape the bandstand. After some time, Parker wanted a breather, Diz would spin Bird around and shove him toward the microphone and kick off the next number. He knew when Bird left the stand the blowing was over TED WILLIAMS

Gene Lees, editor of DownBeat and close friend of Dizzy, arranged to shoot the cover on Birks’ off day. It was winter and we were to shoot in Milwaukee. At the time, I was driving a Saab – a rather small car and Dizzy was smoking one of those Sherlock Holmes pipes – a rather large pipe, especially when filled with green tobacco. It was too cold to open a window, I’m not sure any of us really wanted to anyway. By the time we got to the hotel, we were all feeling pretty good, and I was still in good enough shape to focus. This was done in the hotel room. Birks stayed mellow… probably for a week! TED WILLIAMS
