Letter from the Editor I
am beyond excited for Iconic Magazine’s official launch. Though the first couple of magazines are virtual, this truly starts the journey I once tried to begin a few years ago. When I first wanted to start a magazine, I had all of the ambition in the world, but the resources, at the time, were not available for me to do so. So, I waited...
This first magazine is just a preview - a mock up of the various editions, in one magazine. Each month afterward will have full spreads of the month’s particular edition. I will ask that you please bear with us as we still are finding our way on this journey. As time passes, we’ll get better stories, better pictures, and the design of Iconic Magazine will be more defined.

Chef Patrick Long has food in his blood. He spent summers as a child at his mother’s bakery located in Downtown Greenville, South Carolina. At Sunrise Bakery, Pat grew a fondness for food - whether it was fresh baked bread or tubs of cookie dough. By the age of fifteen, Pat started cooking at Greenville’s “Café and then Some” a dinner theatre, owned by his uncle, located next to his mother’s bakery. After an unsuccessful run as a bus-boy, Pat found himself working the grill on one of the busiest Friday nights of the year. That was the moment he knew he had a future as a chef.
When the weather gets cold, comfort food is a must. Chef Patrick Long from The Green Room in Greenville, South Carolina specializes in hearty soulfull dishes, having spent his entire life in the industry, surrounded by food in his mother’s bakery and his aunt and uncle’s dinner theatre establishment.
After graduating from Johnson and Wales University, Pat decided to move to the big city of Charleston, South Carolina - a now thriving culinary hotspot. He spent time at Old Village Post House under Tim Armstrong, who to this day he credits for pushing him as a chef and testing his limits in every way. He then worked with Jacques Larson, Wild Olive, whom he credits to teaching him about simplicity of food and he even shared the kitchen with culinary darling Sean Brock.
“Califlower Soup Recipe”, Chef Pat Long 1 medium size head of cauliflower, trimmed into florets 1 cup of gorgonzola cheese, crumbed 1 medium onion, diced 1 cup heavy cream 1 quart of vegetable stock Salt and Pepper
Sweat the onions on low heat in a large pot, until translucent. Add the cauliflower and vegetable stock, cover, and bring to a boil. Turn down to a simmer and let cook for 20 minutes. Strain and keep the liquid the cauliflower has cooked in. In a blender place some of the cooked cauliflower, some of the gorgonzola cheese, and some of the heavy cream. Then add about 2-4 ounces of the cauliflower liquid in order for the vegetables and cheese to emulsify. Repeat until all ingredients are pureed into the soup. Season to taste.

ou often find yourself comparing someone great to others that were great before them, but in a small percentage, some define greatness without the help of comparison - namely, DJ Chuck T, who has amassed a tower sized list of awards, accomplishments and recognitions. As the self-proclaimed “Carolina King” or the “Lord And Savior Of Southern Music,” the opinionated disc jockey from Charleston, SC has progressed to a successful status at a phenomenal rate. One word best suited to describe Chuck T is adamant, which is defined as very determined and not

influenced by appeals to reconsider a position or decision. Considering his great success in music and entertainment, he still has a fixed purpose to be a gateway for Carolina entertainment to thrive alongside neighboring cities and states like Atlanta GA, Miami FL, and Houston TX. Starting as a hopeful rap artist, Chuck T steered his career onto a different path in 2004 after purchasing a set of Technics dj equipment. With great business savvy and a passion to spotlight Carolina music wholeheartedly, he has created an empire that provides avenues for serious and talented Carolina artists to display their brand to the greater southeast and potentially a world-wide

market. As a dj on Charleston’s Hot 98.9 (WWBZ), Chuck T used his weekend radio show “The King’s Court” to play mainstream artists while sprinkling in promising underground artists. His actions, initially ill-advised, moved to create an avenue for Carolina underground music to be heard by a wider audience, opening an avenue for Chuck T to launch his mixtape series Ghetto Gangstas. A great promotional tool for new and established artists alike, the series balanced the ears of the listeners with the familiar while simultaneously introducing the new. He rechristened Ghetto Gangstas as Down South Slangin’, a series which rapidly became one of the premier southern mixtape series known, thus spawning the more specialized “Freestyle,”
His mixtapes have helped make household names of artists like Boyz N Da Hood, Slick Pulla and BloodRaw of USDA, Kinfolk, Kia Shine, Flo-Rida, Trey Songz and Rich Boy, to name a few. Since 2005, DJ Chuck T has been nominated for over 60 awards, including an award for “Best New Mixtape DJ” at the 10th Annual Justo’s Mixtape Awards. With consecutive wins in multiple categories since 2006, he’s also won a record nine Southern Entertainment Awards (SEA Awards). The press has also embraced Chuck T, with MTV naming him one of the Top 5 Mixtape DJs of 2007, as well as countless features in The Source, MTV’s Mixtape Mondays, Scratch Magazine and Ozone Magazine. He has even contributed to Ozone Magazine, Down Magazine and The Foundation Magazine as a writer, with his experiences making him even more qualified than most burgeoning journalists. With his name solidified as a brand, DJ Chuck T now finds himself in a position to bring his dream to fruition. In 2008, he launched Publicity Stunt, LLC, a marketing, management, and consulting firm, and the United Carolina Record Pool. Both organizations are dedicated to educating Carolina entertainers and helping catapult their careers to the next level.

A Fragile Tomorrow A Fragile Tomorrow has become one of the most respected bands of brothers on the road, in large part thanks to their venerable work ethic, stellar musicianship, and fans and friends in high places. The four-piece power pop band - comprised of identical brothers Sean and Dominic Kelly, their younger brother Brendan, and Shaun Rhoades - has toured the past seven years, and most recently with Matthew Sweet, The Indigo Girls, The Bangles, Antigone Rising, Garrison Starr and more. On January 8, 2013, the group released their fourth album, Be Nice Be Careful. The album, produced by Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Pavement) and Ted Comerford (Jukebox the Ghost) and recorded at Fidelitorium Recordings in Kernersville, North Carolina, is the next step in a progression that has seen A Fragile Tomorrow grow as musicians and songwriters. “We really wanted to make a record that was spontaneous and fun; something that sounded like a jangly pop band playing in a room together. Working with Mitch and Ted allowed us to open ourselves up creatively and do these songs the way we originally envisioned. It was the best experience we’ve ever had making a record.” - Sean Kelly of A Fragile Tomorrow
32
A Fragile Tomorrow is aptly compared to a wide range of alt-pop influences such as Big Star, Nada Surf, Jellyfish, Teenage Fanclub, Toad the Wet Sprocket, The dB’s, Let’s Active, and R.E.M.; and Be Nice Be Careful features guest vocals from Don Dixon, Amy Ray of Indigo Girls, Vicki and Debbi Peterson of The Bangles, and Susan Cowsill of The Cowsills. Within their busy touring schedule, the band carved out time last January to complete Be Nice Be Careful, with Easter Comerford. Known for his work with bands like R.E.M. and Pavement, Easter brought his trademark jangle-pop sound to the band’s compositions. Since the band’s new album release, they’ve expanded their fan base, touring to new cities, working with more upand-coming musicians as well as some more of their idols, making quality records for their fans, and bringing powerpop music back to the mainstream.

New Jersey has a new starlet, and it’s not a Bravo’s New Jersey housewife. Marissa Erskine, cast member from VH1’s hit show You’re Cut Off, is co-owner and creative director of New Jersey‘s fashion brand Rissa Jerzy Bling. Time for
Wine By: Liz Mitchell
First, let me introduce myself as a food and wine, travel and arts writer. I cannot claim to be a wine expert for sure, although I can do a pretty good job drinking it. I’ve learned a bit about wine through research as well as through some fabulous events and tastings with true aficionados. One of the most important things I’ve learned is that it’s not necessary to follow any rules to simply order wisely in a restaurant or grab a bottle from the grocery store on the way home from work. It’s ok to drink what you like. Sample something that looks interesting, or ask for a recommendation if you’re in a nice restaurant which offers an intimidating wine list. In any restaurant

This sculpture, the surface of which revolves 120 degrees, has three sides, each of which is on the same plane. It reveals and conceals with palpable power and energy. It sold well above its price range at the 2012 Contemporary Forum auction at the Phoenix Art Museum. Caron has also created a 9-foot-tall version of this form titled Wherever You Go, There You Are.

A site specific commission designed to serve as a salient focal point by incorporating color and a balanced proportion between ascending, interpenetrating shapes. It was commissioned for the front of a 12,000foot house on the southwestern face of Phoenix’s iconic Camelback Mountain to not block the home’s view of the Valley while looking substantial from the street.
One of Caron’s spike series, a denizen of the sea meets urban culture in this sculptural mash up. This sculpture was featured in the “Fish for the Sea” show in SouthHampton, New York.

n March 2, 2013 renowned fashion designer Carmen Marc Valvo will paint Charleston, South Carolina blue at the 7th Annual Unmasking Colon Cancer Gala.
