Cape Breton is known for its creativity. From the inventive mind of Alexander Graham Bell to the musical genius of Natalie McMaster, Cape Breton has inspired great ideas. Maybe it’s the saltwater breezes, maybe it’s the captivating scenery, or maybe it’s pure magic, but Cape Breton has a way of nurturing creativity. Rugged shorelines of sheer grandeur. Glens that match those of old Scotland. Valleys of remarkable beauty.” More recently, Travel + Leisure magazine named Cape Breton the best island to visit in the continental United States and Canada in the 2008 World’s Best Awards readers’ survey. Maritime Inn Port Hawkesbury “I have used the Maritime Inn Port Hawkesbury for meetings on several occasions, and will always use their facilities when I am having a meeting in this area. The rooms are clean and always set to my expectations. The staff are very attentive and pleasant, and truly seem committed to ensuring that I have everything I need to make my meeting a success. The restaurant has excellent food and prompt service, allowing us to stay on schedule because we don’t have to wait for attendees to return from other places after lunch. Accommodations are also clean and comfortable, and having free wireless internet allows me to connect to my email and other resources over the internet, keeping me in touch with my office and making it easy to stay on top of things while I am away. CAPE BRETON REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY
The Cape Breton Regional Municipality, known locally as CBRM, is the second largest municipality in the province of Nova Scotia. It is an amalgamation of the former industrial towns of Dominion, New Waterford, Glace Bay, Sydney, North Sydney and Sydney Mines, plus the fishing community of Louisbourg and the smaller surrounding communities that used to make up Cape Breton County. The region’s population of 105,968 is spread out across an area of approximately 2,500 square kilometres on the northeastern side of Cape Breton island. The island is ideally located next to the strait that connects the cold North Atlantic Ocean to the warmer waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and its seaway connection to the major markets in central Canada and the U.S. eastern seaboard and midwest. Situated directly across from Newfoundland, CBRM is close to George’s Bank and some of the richest fishing grounds in the world.
For those reasons, the area is rich with the history of the earliest settlements in North America after European explorers discovered the nearby island’s wealth of coal and wood. The abundance of coal, in particular, led to the establishment of a steel making industry that powered much of Canada’s industrial growth throughout the twentieth century. In addition to its historical importance as a resource base for the country, the island’s rugged beauty has remained. Thus, Cape Breton is consistently ranked among the best travel destinations in the world. Natural attractions include renowned mountains, waterfalls and beaches and modern developments range from stunning golf courses to worldclass historical sites. Eco-tourism is becoming popular, as well, with seasonal sea kayaking and whale watching tours available, along with some of the finest skiing venues in the Maritimes. The diverse cultural history of the region is on display year-round, with
numerous community festivals and attractions. The area’s first inhabitants, the Mi’kmaq (pronounced MIG-ma) people, continue to have a vital cultural and economic stake in island society. CBRM encompasses two of Cape Breton island’s five Mi’kmaq First Nation communities. Eskasoni is one of the largest First Nation communities in Nova Scotia, and is located on the shores of Bras d’Or Lake, a large inland sea. Membertou First Nation is situated within the urban area of Sydney and is considered one of the most progressive First Nation communities in Canada. The Membertou Trade and Convention Centre is the newest such facility in CBRM, successfully blending modern conveniences and comforts with traditional Mi’kmaq decor. To get an idea of some of the region’s museums, parks and attractions, please see page 16.
On behalf of the citizens of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, please accept my personal welcome to this most beautiful region of Canada. Our island’s strategic location on the tip of eastern North America is well complemented by the rugged scenery of Cape Breton, which is consistently ranked among the most beautiful islands in the world. In addition to our Island’s magnificent natural beauty, the CBRM is comprised of a diverse cultural fabric, and our people are generous, hospitable, and hard-working. I hope that you will have an opportunity to visit and explore all that this unique part of Canada has to offer. Yours truly,
Mayor John W. Morgan, B.Sc., M.B.A./LL.B. Cape Breton Regional Municipality

MEETINGS &
CONVENTIONS
There are 1,243 rooms available at hotels, motels, inns and bed-andbreakfast operations in CBRM. The municipality has four large hotels with over 100 rooms each, three of which are located downtown within easy walking distance from shops, restaurants and nightclubs.
In addition to boardroom and meeting space at local hotels, Sydney boasts three full-scale convention facilities with rooms of various sizes: • Centre 200 is Sydney’s downtown meeting space, connected to Casino Nova Scotia and the C200 hockey arena • The Joan Harriss Pavilion is located your event | our facility | extraordinary
on Sydney’s waterfront next to downtown
• The Membertou Trade & Convention Centre is a five-minute drive from downtown Two 18-hole golf courses are located within a 10-15 minute drive from Sydney, and the island has a total of nine 18-hole courses to choose from, including the top-rated Highlands Links Golf Course in Ingonish, as well as several nine-hole courses and driving ranges. The island’s economy has undergone a rapid and dynamic transition as the former industrial and resource base has been replaced by light industry, service
sector jobs and knowledge-based commerce. The potential development of a large undersea coal mine is highly anticipated, but Cape Bretoners are increasingly embracing new energy opportunities from wind power, coal-bed methane and geothermal sources. A proposed seaport container terminal valued at $200 million has area residents and the business community planning new commercial ventures to support increasing global opportunities. The region already has well developed industrial parks, relatively inexpensive land, competitive taxes and a university and community college geared towards educating the next generation of community leaders, workers and entrepreneurs. And CBRM was recently ranked among the most competitive locations in North America to conduct business, according to global professional services firm KPMG. Transportation options include modern highways, rail, sea and airport access, and high-speed Internet is being extended across the island.

CENTRE 200 Whether you’re searching for some great entertainment or a place to gather with colleagues, Centre 200 can meet all your needs. Named for the anniversary of the founding of the City of Sydney, the massive venue was constructed as a bicentennial project of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) to take the place of the old Sydney Forum. When the Canada Winter Games came to Cape Breton in 1987 looking for a specialized multi-sport venue, the newly-constructed Centre 200 building and staff members rose to the occasion by combining efficient amenities with just the right amount of Cape Breton hospitality. The event was a tremendous success and Centre 200 was quickly assigned the title of Cape Breton’s Entertainment Showplace. Located in the heart of downtown Sydney, Centre 200 is within walking distance of the many shops and stores of bustling Charlotte Street, or the tranquil setting of the nearby duckfilled ponds at Wentworth Park. Just a stone’s throw away from grocery stores and great Sydney restaurants, the reflective glass George Street location is hard to miss. And just next door, visitors and residents can mingle in the exciting atmosphere of Casino Nova Scotia.
A unique lighting grid and sound system compliments the theatre space inside Centre 200 and ensures uncompromising sound quality for all events. A full kitchen can serve up to 1,000 people for any type of function, and the venue’s box office handles ticket sales for in-house events and manages sales and box office services for other outlets. “Centre 200 hosted the first annual Cape Breton Auto Show June 28-29, 2008, and it was a great success. It was evident that Centre 200 staff worked very hard to prepare the facility, which is no small task. Plans are already underway for the 2009 Cape Breton Auto Show and our club members are eager to participate. Our hats are off to the organizing committee and the facility and we hope to be part of this event for many years to come.” Herb Martell, President Cape Breton Antique and Custom Car Club As one of the island’s most versatile spaces, Centre 200 can expertly switch
from convention centre to exhibition arena, or to a sports or entertainment facility. The location is also wellequipped and flexible enough to meet special needs. The obstruction-free arena, with seating for 4,881 people, is capable of expanding to 6,500 seats. Meeting rooms accommodate up to 150 people and the concourse areas are perfect for banquets, smaller performance events or even wedding receptions. The main arena has exhibit space of 17,000 sq. ft., expandable by another 3,000 sq. ft, if required. Big-name musical events, monster truck rallies, conventions, tradeshows and high-end fancy dinner galas . . . Centre 200 has seen and done it all! Atlantic salmon, and scenic east coast fishing communities. Lobster, mussels and crab are fresh from the sea, and seasonal festivals reflect centuries-old maritime traditions. Golf courses include the legendary Highland Links, which has been named the No. 1 public course in Canada. What more can be said about the superlative Cabot Trail? Mountain vistas, ocean views, hiking and fishing, waterfalls, whale watching tours and more. The trail can be done in a halfday, but most visitors find they need a day to enjoy a relaxing trip, and many return to catch up on attractions they missed the first time around. And in
the fall, the vibrant red, orange and yellow of the hardwood trees blends with the green of softwoods to produce some of the most spectacular visual effects found in nature. PORT HAWKESBURY The annual summer concert series attracts thousands of visitors, and the canal attracts sport fishing enthusiasts looking for a wide variety of marine life.
Shipbuilding and fishing helped establish the community of Port Hawkesbury in the 1700s, and today the town has flourished into a modern industrial and commercial centre with an ice-free deep-water port, supporting marine, pulp and paper and petrochemical industries, among many others.
The locks also move plenty of commercial and recreational marine traffic between the North Atlantic Ocean and the warmer waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
About half-way between Sydney and Halifax, across the Canso Strait from mainland Nova Scotia, it is the gateway community to Cape Breton Island for travellers by road. The Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is the town’s crown jewel, an internationally recognized, environmentally friendly convention
It’s no exaggeration that there’s always something going on in Port Hawkesbury, and the warm, friendly residents are always ready to welcome visitors individually or in groups. and meeting space with concert and sports arena, gift shop and art gallery. PORT HAWKESBURY
CIVIC CENTRE
Sitting proudly on the shores of the Strait of Canso, the Town of Port Hawkesbury has become a top-notch, commercial and recreation area; thanks in no small part to the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre. Officially opened on November 26, 2004, the centre is described as the most important piece of social infrastructure in the community. “Believe it!” became the mantra of a town, driven to realize their dream of building a landmark structure that would define the intentions of the people of Port Hawkesbury and their hopes for the future. As a focal point for the region, the centre offers all the necessary elements to guarantee the success of any function or event.
Owned and occupied by the Town of Port Hawkesbury, the Civic Centre houses twenty-two permanent occupants, composed of management, municipal and YMCA staff. The space is also shared by contract and part-time workers. During a regular week the centre plays host to a continuous flow of roughly 2800 happy visitors, using the facility for a multitude of reasons. The Arena itself has 1,000 fixed seats, with the capacity on the arena floor to host 1,000 seats when set up theatre style, or 700 seats as a banquet lay-out, making it the perfect space to host trade shows or live performances with top-notch entertainers. Conference rooms, a gallery space, a dance studio, a fitness area, racquet ball courts, and even a walking track all add to the facility’s attractiveness for local visitors or out-of-towners.
In 2005, the centre showed off Cape Breton hospitality in a big way when it housed the largest sporting event to visit the Strait area. The Grand Slam Curling World Tour came to Port Hawkesbury and took the town by storm for four full days with intense competitions.
operable windows and the facility is cleaned using biodegradable cleaning products. Staff members prefer to use lap-top computers as opposed to desktop modules to further reduce energy consumption and email efficiently replaces paper messaging to reduce paper consumption.
In 2006, Business Weekly listed the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre as one of the top ten sports stadiums in the world mainly due to the facility’s “green factor”. The creation of this “green” facility has rendered the Town of Port Hawkesbury a pioneer in its own right. In fact, the arena portion of the Civic Centre is the first of its kind in North America to successfully harness the power of natural daylight to illuminate the ice surface. The indoor environment of the smartly-designed centre as well as its maintenance program has been carefully planned to ensure that healthy and resource-efficient surroundings are continuously promoted. Air quality is sensoryprotected, and paint and carpets were selected based on their low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC). Free air flow direct from outdoors is promoted through the centre’s
As a central and highly visible structure, the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre serves town residents, tourists and the business community alike. Adjacent to the local high school and commercial district, the civic centre is impossible to miss, as passers-by travel the main road through the town. Visitors from out of town will find easy-access to major grocery stores, clothing stores and restaurants from the ever-efficient structure. Offering a complete business equipment package, the smartlydesigned centre is a logical choice for individuals or businesses wanting to make use of LCD and video conferencing services. It also offers wireless connectivity, a full-service business centre, as well as catering and kitchen facilities. The space also houses an arena, a fitness centre, a dance studio, a performance space, gallery space, and municipal offices. RICHMOND
COUNTY
Richmond County, located on Cape Breton Island’s southeast side, is a treasure to explore by land or by sea, with its Acadian, Scottish and Mi’kmaq cultural sites, seemingly endless sandy beaches – some of which are among Nova Scotia’s prime surfing destinations – and fishing communities, marinas and public boat launches.
St. Peter’s Canal, built between 1845 and 1869 and one of Canada’s national historic sites, is Canada’s oldest tidal lock canal. It bisects the county and joins the Atlantic Ocean to the Bras d’Or Lake, and evolved from a land-based portage route used by the Mi’kmaq and early settlers and explorers. Today, the locks move commercial and private craft between the ocean and Canada’s only inland sea, bringing many sailors from around the world for summer regattas and pleasure cruises. The historic site includes a picnic area, interpretive exhibit and the 19th-century lockmaster’s house, a remnant reminding us of the region’s importance to European settlers and Mi’kmaq. The Battery Park lighthouse marks the entrance to the canal, and the park is an extremely popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts. Features include a picnic area, unsupervised beach, archaeological ruins of Fort Dorchester, a lime kiln, and an old farmstead. Interpretive signs explain
the area’s Mi’kmaq history.
Isle Madame, an island just off the Cape Breton coast connected by a short causeway, is dotted with early Basque, French and Acadian fishing villages, and its history and culture are reflected in the various community halls, bed-and-breakfast facilities and musical and artistic activities, events and festivals. The history of sailing ships is a popular stop at LeNoir Forge in the community of Arichat on Isle Madame. Opportunities to explore abound on Richmond County’s walking trails, and visitors can also cycle, kayak or drive to lighthouses, rocky coastal outcrops and sandy beaches. In addition to Battery Park at St. Peter’s, Richmond County is home to
five other provincial parks that range from roadside picnic areas with scenic outlooks high above the Bras d’Or Lake at Irish Cove, to lighthouses and beaches on the ocean shore. For information on provincial parks, call (902) 535-2032 or visit: www.parks. gov.ns.ca. Dundee Resort and Golf Club, in West Bay, offers luxurious accommodations and plenty of activities for the family or the discerning traveller, while other regional accommodations include bedand-breakfasts and motels. Dining options throughout the county range from take-outs to tea rooms, and fast food to fine dining.
