John Gorka w/Antje Duvekot CSPS Hall, 1103 Third St. S.E., Cedar Rapids 7 p.m. tonight, $17 advance/$21 door With his favorite-shirt baritone, gently-achieved insights and tendency to regularly flip his guitar to shake out “incomplete-note build-up,” Gorka excels both at self-penned material and on covers. Cheap for Gorka — the bonus of the extraordinary Duvekot (who moved stateside from Germany when her parents divorced) maxes your entertainment dollar. Some have called her an Ani DiFranco clone; myself, I don’t hear it, but if that’s the WORST you can say ...

Joseph Hall: Elvis Rock ‘N’ Remember Coralville Center for the Performing Arts, 1301 Fifth St. 8 p.m. Friday, tickets $18 to $28 I belong to the camp that says even a bad Elvis impersonator brings a lot to the entertainment table. Mr. Hall comes with serious bona fides, a whiz-bang multimedia show and lots of high-viz appearances (“GMA,” “America’s Got Talent,” FOX News, etc.). Still, his publicity claims “the tightest rock’n’roll band in Branson” (eek!) will make you “think you are watching The King himself.” I’m betting you won’t.

Catfish Keith The Mill, 120 E. Burlington St. 8 p.m. Saturday, $10 cover Across four decades, Catfish Keith has risen from a scuffling, would-be blues aficionado to a globetrotting Blues Hall of Fame inductee with a dozen indie radio chart-topping albums, two W.C. Handy Award nominations (for Best Acoustic Blues Album) and regular slots in international blues festivals from Kuala Lampur to the British Isles. This marks one his rare annual returns to his home nest; check out vintage country blues, pre-WWII pop and whorehouse jazz at its best.

Surf Zombies CD Release CSPS Hall, 1103 Third St. S.E., Cedar Rapids 8 p.m. Saturday, $10 advance/$13 door The presence of Surf Zombies’ veteran ax-wielder Brook Hoover made me leave town for two shots this week. Probably the area’s best full-service rockyroll volume-dealing guitarist (glam/punk/metal/shriek’n’shred) since all-time champ Rob Gal left for Georgia, Hoover has delivered rhythm, power and beauty through hipster stalwarts Meerkats, Motorolas, The Dick Prall Band and many, many more bands. Opening acts are DJ Tone Zone and pop-rockers Twins.

Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs Trumpet Blossom Cafe, 310 E. Prentiss St. 8 p.m. Tuesday, $8 cover 21-plus Combining a hippie vibe, rustic Americana charm and brash, punky energy, this colorful duo (Holly from East Sussex, “Lawyer” Dave from Texas) found common ground in rural Georgia. Their 2012 “Sunday Run Me Over” kicks my tail; the brand-new “It’s Her Fault” is boss, too. That first clause also describes Trumpet Blossom, a well-reviewed vegan descendent of The Red Avocado sprawled out in the crib (and large, well-appointed bar) of the old Hideaway.

BENJAMIN ROBERTS / IOWA CITY PRESS-CITIZEN

Why you should know him: Frederick Newell, 26, of Iowa City, is the executive director and founder of The Dream Center, an Iowa City-based community organization that strengthens and empowers families through programs directed at fathers and youth. The Dream Center hosts the popular Youth Leadership Academy and The Fatherhood Academy, as well the new Performance Arts Academy, which build skills such as respect, self-esteem and personal development. Newell grew up in Chicago, but moved to Iowa City to earn his undergraduate degree in Social Work at the University of Iowa while a single father. He went to work for Systems Unlimited, Four Oaks and the Department of Human Services, where he advocates for underserved and minority families. Newell recently welcomed his fifth child with his wife, Christian. I opened The Dream Center because: Many different reasons. One of the major reasons was growing up in the city of Chicago, I always knew I wanted to give back to my community, but one of the things I really struggled with as a college student was there was no support for me as a single father. I felt there were so many programs for young women and mothers, but there was nothing looking at development for young men to adult men. One obstacle I see facing young men in Iowa City today is: When you start talking about minority men growing up, there are just not enough role models in our community. A lot of young men aspire to be what they see on TV, and I’m not trying to downplay that you can’t become a rapper or whatever, but only about 1 percent of men actually make it. ... I want them to want to be more than just a rapper and a ball player. I want them to go after career jobs like doctors and lawyers and teachers. The most important thing I want people to know about The Dream Center is: We’re not just an organization saying that we’re trying. We’re strengthening kids, and these kids are going to college, families are staying out of the DHS and criminal justice systems, and we’re really a part of the community in Iowa City. — Aly Brown

taste SZECHUAN “Chinese food” is somewhat of a misnomer, especially here in America. To think that China’s incredibly diverse cuisine consisting of countless iterations, regions and styles, with even subsets of styles within them, can be defined by fried rice or sweet and sour chicken is just plain wrong. Szechuan cuisine, originating from the Sichuan province in southwest China, is renowned for bold, spicy flavors with ingredients such as Sichuan peppers, chili oils, preserved foods and organs. These three local restaurants bring this lively cuisine to Eastern Iowa. — Aly Brown

Hunan Chinese Restaurant 118 Second St., Coralville Information: 338-8885 One of the most well-known cooking methods in Szechuan cuisine is the hot pot. A variety of ingredients are stewed in an unglazed clay pot over an open flame for a unique combination of flavors, textures and aromas. Hunan Chinese Restaurant in Coralville offers a variety of hot pot entrees, including Beef Brisket ($9.55) and Cantonese Subgum Bean Curd ($9.05).

Szechwan Village

413 10th Ave., Coralville Information: 338-2888 Szechwan Village owner Jing Dong Zhang said while the Coralville restaurant cooks a variety of dishes from home, the Kung Pao Chicken ($7.95) is the most popular among customers. Chicken is stir fried with a spicy kung pao sauce, diced vegetables and peanuts. “It’s spicy,” he said. “Szechuan food is more spicy, and generally for people who are Chinese, they come to the restaurant and they eat very spicy. We can modify it for the customer if they want.”

lthough some performers may be content to stay within the boundaries of their learned technique, others push their craft, breaking the mold to create something new. Gallim Dance, hailing from New York City, has quickly made a reputation as an innovative contemporary dance company with imagination

in spades. Founded in 2007 by artistic director Andrea Miller, Gallim performs internationally with dances inspired by everything from a cardboard box, to the human blush, to Chinese-born artist Cai Guo-Qiang’s installation “Head On,” depicting 99 wolves charging into a glass wall. Miller, known as the “wild child” of the contemporary dance world, studied at The Juilliard School before moving to Tel Aviv, Israel, to join Ohad Naharin’s Ensemble Batsheva, where she developed a “language” merging dance, theater and emotion. “I think what’s important to me, is to make work that has kind of an emotional drive to it that takes on through the body and through the theater very human stories that we recognize, but are being translated into a really unique language,” Miller said. “You don’t exactly recognize why you recognize it, or what you’re feeling as an audience member, but a sense of nostalgia or resonance hopefully comes into play.” Miller’s troupe will perform two pieces tonight and Friday

night at Space Place Theater: “Pupil Suite,” an electric romp set to Israeli gypsy punk music, and “Sit, Kneel, Stand,” inspired by Albert Camus’ essay on the myth of Sisyphus. Miller said “Sit, Kneel, Stand” is like a lens focusing in and out, a dance which moves from the abstract to the atomic and back out to the human level as the audience watches the first man attempt to “achieve an urge.” “Then we go back out into the universe, which is expanded and exploded,” she said. “To me, our stories are just as irrelevant as much as they are magical, our human stories.” Company dancer Dan Walczak said both dances are “in different spectrums of dance.” “ ‘Sit, Kneel, Stand’ is a bit more abstract, and it’s a bit more kind of conceptual,” he said. “It’s kind of nice to have a change to investigate what you’re doing in a more abstract sort of way, whereas ‘Pupil’ is very driven, very musical, very pop culture. It kind of feels like a big party.” Both of Miller’s dances require immense amounts of strength and technique from her dancers, as they warp and crumple and explode across the stage. Miller also incorporates spoken word into her pieces through song, text and improvised speech. “It takes a lot for a dancer to think about what they’re doing, particularly improvising in real time,” she said. “To me, it’s kind of like the peak of some of the stuff we do because I’m interested in bringing the whole person to the work. I’m not just doing the technique; I’m trying to move the whole soul.”
