Talk to a collector of original art and ask how that person selected a painting, piece of sculpture, pottery. Ask: "how did you select your art?"
Most people answer: "Because I liked it. I only buy what I like." Others collect art by theme like sports, nature, landscapes. Others collect by style: impressionism, cubism, modern, abstract, traditional. And others (and most artists dread this answer) collect a piece because it matches a couch, wall, or furniture.
People's taste can change and develop. Others like a style and stick with it forever. Some collectors become experts.
One friend collected art that solely revolved around the theme of sports. His artwork was colorful and energetic and he surrounded himself with what he enjoyed. Another friend loves art that looks oriental. He has taken courses about art and has developed a good eye for works that he enjoys but also are really nice pieces.
Then there is the wealthy collector who started collecting as a young man and has a wonderful collection of art that is invaluable! He collected before the art increased in value so now he has a collection that represents the style he loves and he has a great investment.
A couple I know likes to attend auctions. Their collection is eclectic and represents the heat of competing for a particular piece. It works for them and they have collected Rembrandt's, unknown artists, classics and abstracts.
Whatever you collect; whatever style you like; whatever you want to purchase, make sure that your art is just that: original. If you fall in love with a piece of art and really want it, you cannot wait for a sale like you would in a department store. There will be only that one piece. And chances are, if you deliberate too long, when you go back to buy the piece for your collection, it will be gone. You will NEVER have a chance to buy that particular piece again!
Long ago I had a chance to buy a Motherwell that I had fallen in love with. I agonized. My beginning teacher's salary was low and I could not justify the expense. Of course, later when I thought I could afford the piece, it was gone. AND the prices of Motherwell's works had risen more than my salary had! A lost opportunity that happened more than 30 years ago and you can tell that I still dwell on the piece!
But I did learn my lesson. When I see a piece of art that I love, I do not worry about wall space, floor space, or if it goes with my decor. If I can afford the piece, I add it to my very eclectic collection. And I love and appreciate every piece of original art that I own.
