ICTSI brings heavy lift equipment to Tacloban International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) has brought in a brand new mobile harbor crane (MHC) to the Port of Tacloban to augment the first batch of cargo handling equipment fleet brought in by the Company. The MHC, manufactured by Gottwald of Germany, is a key equipment in the loading and offloading of containers that also provides much needed capacity for project cargo up to 100 tons. It is one of two that have been delivered to Hijo International Port, an ICTSI subsidiary in Davao del Norte. ICTSI decided to send one to Tacloban to speed up port operations, in particular the delivery of relief supplies. With the MHC, ICTSI has deployed equipment worth over US$5 million to Tacloban. The MHC was delivered on board Gloria, a vessel from Hamburg shipping firm, SAL-Heavylift GmbH, which had an all-Filipino crew. SAL generously provided the passage from Davao to Tacloban free of charge. Stinis of Holland also donated two spreaders that would be used by the MHC. Despite the difficulty and risk of transporting the MHC from Davao to Tacloban because of the shallow drafts along the route and of Tacloban port itself, engineers from ICTSI, Gottwald and SAL worked around the clock to find solutions that would enable to give Gloria safe passage to Tacloban. Photo shows the MHC’s first lift, a forty-foot container, at the Tacloban Port. This is the first time in the port’s history that a proper container crane is in place.

DECEMBER 2013

The Chairman’s Christmas Message We are all aware of the plight in Eastern Visayas and the rest of Central Philippines. The loss of lives and the millions of people affected were unprecedented. The typhoon’s destructive force ravaged the communities in its path, leaving a region in ruins. Many are grieving the loss of their loved ones and their homes. I commiserate with the victims, and I encourage everyone to continue helping in the relief and rehabilitation efforts of the Philippine government, private sector and the international community. We are helping where we can. We have opened up our CFS facilities at the MICT to the Department of Social Welfare and Development to be one of the latter’s relief operations center. We worked with the Department of Transportation and Communications and the Philippine Ports Authority to temporarily run the Port of Tacloban to be a staging station for relief goods destined for the Visayas. We also brought in to the port a mobile harbor crane, reach stackers, forklifts, prime movers and even a team of highly skilled workers to speed up the delivery of relief supplies. We have also supported the efforts of the Church and several NGO’s. Given the dire situation of our brothers and sisters and the somber mood prevailing upon us all, it is but fitting to be one with the victims this Christmas by canceling all our Christmas parties this year. The funds intended for these events will be rechanneled to bring a Christmas party to the port community in Tacloban. Through this small sacrifice, we hope for everyone to experience the true spirit of the Season as well as show our solidarity with a convalescing nation. On behalf of the management of ICTSI, we wish you a meaningful and blessed Christmas!

Enrique K. Razon Jr. ICTSI Chairman and President

the most number of entries submitted in the awards’ history—made it to the honor roll. Participating organizations include the country’s top corporations, agencies and schools. The ICTSI Silver Brochure Series was submitted to the Philippine Quill’s Communications Skills category, Publications sub-category. The brochure series was launched in time for the ICTSI Silver Anniversary Gala Night celebration held last 14 June at the grand ballroom of Solaire Resort and Casino in Entertainment City Manila, Paranaque City. The series comprises three brochures: (1) ICTSI Profile, which provides the capability statement and company overview of ICTSI; (2) ICTSI Silver Horizon Commemorative Brochure, which chronicles the 25-year history of ICTSI; and the (3) ICTSI Factbook, which provides a detailed overview of ICTSI’s global operations. An important feature of the latter is the use of icons to show how various container handling equipment look like, colorful graphs and maps of terminal features and specifications, maps of the terminals, port areas and countries, and interesting trivia on the host port or country. Project lead of the brochure series project was Mr. Kalambakal and assisted by Jaythree Tayag, ICTSI Factbook Lead Researcher. PRO tapped the services of Ms. Badoy; Mila Lumactao, Editorial Consultant; and Anthony Villanueva, Art Consultant in the implementation of the project. Plans are underway for a single volume brochure that would condense all three brochures. The volume will also include a DVD containing a PDF file of the hard copy brochure, a slide presentation version in PowerPoint of the Factbook, and the five-minute ICTSI Excellence AVP. Established in 1983, IABC Philippines is the first chapter of IABC outside of the United States. IABC, on the other hand, is a San Francisco-based, not-for-profit trade association for business communications professionals with approximately 16,000 members and 100 chapters. The association was founded in 1970 with the merger of the American Association of Industrial Editors and the International Council of Industrial Editors.

to participate in all the games. The games used the knockout format. The bowling games amazed most of the employees. Neophyte players tried their best and had fun despite dropping balls into the canal numerous times. Unexpectedly, two players from Makassar Mask got the highest scores, which enabled them to win. There were no surprises during the badminton games as Muara Tanker clinched the top spot in mixed and women’s doubles for the third consecutive year. On the other hand, Naha Samurai was victorious in table tennis singles. Since the knockout format was used, every game was crucial, and players had to give their best in order to vie for the championship. After several grueling basketball games, Makassar Mask won the championship at Naha Samurai’s expense. During the last three DIPSSCOR sports fests, there were four teams with corresponding colors, namely, blue for Makassar Mask, black for Naha Samurai, red for Yantai Dragon and yellow for Muara Tanker. DIPSSCORlympics 2013 was part of the 29th anniversary celebration of DIPSSCOR. After the sports fest, the participants feasted at River Walk Grill’s buffet.

ICTSI Jakarta unit deploys new prime movers By Jerome Saludo

PT PBM Olah Jasa Andal (OJA), Indonesian subsidiary of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), recently deployed 15 brand-new prime movers (PM) to further improve terminal operations in Berths 300–303 of the Port of Tanjung Priok’s Terminal III in Jakarta, Indonesia. The 15 PMs, tractor heads used in the transport of containers to and from the berths and container yards, and within the container yards, is part of OJA’s contractual commitment to Indonesia Port Corp. II, port manager of the Port of Tanjung Priok. The 15 PMs was the first batch of 30 new units. By yearend, the remaining 15 units would have been deployed. The investment cost OJA over US$1 million, and is expected to improve the overall performance of the terminal and reduce truck turnaround time.

The UD brand tractor heads, manufactured by PT Astra Multi Trucks Indonesia (AMT), come with three-axle trailers. The tractors are powered by a four-cycle water-cooled turbo charged diesel engine with a six-speed transmission that drives to a maximum speed of 98 kilometers per hour. To keep the new equipment in good running condition, operators and mechanics of OJA underwent skills training on operation and maintenance. The training was part of the package offered by AMT, and seeks to increase the operational and technical knowledge of both operators and mechanics.

Operators and mechanics of PT PBM Olah Jasa Andal (OJA) undergo orientation and training for the newly acquired tractors and chassis.

Extending a helping hand: CH2M HILL joins massive relief effort for Haiyan typhoon victims By Marissa De Guzman

In an effort to help out our fellow countrymen, employees of CH2M HILL Philippines provided relief goods to the survivors in Tacloban and other areas ravaged by typhoon Haiyan (local name Yolanda) through the Philippine Red Cross. Due to the lack of power and potable water in these areas, we have donated easy-to-open and ready-to-eat meals and sterilized milk for the hungry. Each year, the Manila office collects contributions from its employees for charitable activities held during last quarter of the year. For 2013, Philippine-based employees have unanimously decided to use this fund to help in the relief efforts for the typhoon victims. CH2M HILL Foundation also immediately provided up to USD20,000 to match one for one all eligible financial donations from employees, and Red Crescent Philippines Typhoon Appeal has pledged USD50,000 to assist in the recovery efforts. We have also provided urgent technical support to International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), a global port management company based in Manila. ICTSI has been assisting the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) in restoring operations at the Tacloban Port, which was devastated by the typhoon and the five-meter surge along with it that swept across the city. The main wharf structures are reportedly undamaged, but port buildings, fencing, power lines, lamp posts and plants have been damaged or destroyed. ICTSI had already loaned the PPA equipment to assist with the unloading of relief supplies. Meanwhile, ICTSI had deployed two 330-ton mobile harbor cranes (MHC) to Hijo Port in southern Mindanao. ICTSI had the barge diverted to Tacloban and unloaded one MHC at the Tacloban Port. We were tasked to do an urgent analysis of the main wharf and find out if it could support the crane, and if there should be any limits to how close the crane could work to the wharf edge. Given the severity and urgency of the assessment, our Bangkok-based port

International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s mobile harbor crane arrives at the Tacloban Port on board Gloria.

engineers worked late on Friday night, adopting a safe but quick and effective method of analysis (it would usually take two weeks to complete a full analysis). We were able to communicate to ICTSI on Friday night the conclusion that the wharf could support the MHC while lifting or travelling, but the wheels should be no closer than 10 meters from the edge when the MHC is travelling. Our experts then worked over the weekend, tidying up the supporting calculations for submission on Monday to help with the successful unloading, assembly and operation of the MHC. The installation of the MHC will contribute to the more efficient unloading of desperately needed supplies. We have also begun planning our support in the rebuilding, reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts in the coming months. Given our experience in emergency response and reconstruction combined with our local presence, we have started the on-going process of exploring how we could offer our support. We started this by contacting representatives of the international foreign aid community who pledged support.
