MICT Yard 7 opens

I

nternational Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) inaugurated Yard 7 of the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) and commissioned four new rubber tired gantry (RTG) cranes last 27 November.

Part of MICT’s PhP5 billion expansion project, Yard 7 adds substantial capacity to the terminal, now at 2.75 million TEUs from 2.6 million TEUs. The additional capacity addresses the current demand of shipping line clients and the port community for terminal services as well as the anticipated increase in container volume.

Early in November, ICTSI took delivery of four new Kalmar E-One² Zero Emission RTGs for its flagship MICT. The RTGs belong to ICTSI’s large port equipment order from Cargotec’s Kalmar, forming part of MICT’s port equipment upgrading to complement and sustain the terminal’s multimillion dollar infrastructure development project including the

expansion of the container yard. The Kalmar E-One² Zero Emission RTG is equipped with a 100-percent electric power system that produces no emissions or engine noise. Featuring a simplified design, this Zero Emission RTG can save up to 600 liters of engine oil yearly and reduce emissions by up to 90 percent.

Formally marking the start of Yard 7 operations are (from left): Atty. Juan Sta. Ana, Philippine Ports Authority General Manager; Philippine Cabinet Secretary Jose Rene D. Almendras; Enrique K. Razon Jr., ICTSI Chairman and President; Manila Vice Mayor Francisco Domagoso; and Christian R. Gonzalez, ICTSI Senior Vice President and Head of Asia Pacific Region and MICT. Behind them is one of MICT’s four new RTGs.

ICTSI at APEC International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) was among the key private sector participants in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) events held in Cebu and Manila last November. As a global conglomerate, the ICTSI Group has operations and concessions in APEC member nations: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, People’s Republic of China, Indonesia, Mexico, the Philippines and the United States of America. Non-APEC member Colombia, where ICTSI also operates, attended the international meet as an observer. ICTSI sees a larger role in the APEC region with governments divesting port assets to the private sector. APEC, founded in November 1989, is a multilateral international organization, which fosters free trade and economic prosperity among its 21 member-economies in the Asia-Pacific region. It is a forum established in response to the growing

economic interdependence in the region and the advent of regional trade blocs in other parts of the world. It also aims to establish new markets for agricultural products and raw materials beyond Europe. An annual APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting is attended by the heads of government of all APEC members except Taiwan (which is represented by a ministerial-level official under the name Chinese Taipei). The location of the meeting rotates annually among the member economies, and a famous tradition, followed for most (but not all) summits, involves the attending leaders dressing in a national costume of the host country. This year’s APEC hosting was the second for the Philippines. The country hosted APEC meetings for the first time in 1996.

APEC Port Services Network Conference

ICTSI and other port stakeholders from Asia-Pacific economies met at the APEC Port Services Network Conference held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cebu to work out ways to improve the flow of trade and other services within the region. The gathering served as a venue where port stakeholders shared their best practices with regional counterparts in terms of port connectivity. ICTSI was also one of the exhibitors at the conference. ICTSI Chairman at 17th Nikkei Global Management Forum International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) Chairman and President Enrique K. Razon Jr. was among top business executives invited to speak at the recently held Nikkei Global Management Forum last November in Tokyo, Japan. Started in 1999, the Nikkei Global Management Forum continuously brings together accomplished business leaders to discuss various management philosophies, global trends and strategies. Mr. Razon talked about global business expansion, citing his own experience and the challenges faced by ICTSI, which now operates 29 terminals in as many as 20 countries. “In this global business climate, volatility is the brutal reality of the 21st century global affairs,” Mr. Razon said. Despite a weak trade growth, Mr. Razon remains confident that his company will not only weave through the economic uncertainties affecting the world but also thrive. His plan for the next five years is to establish more operations abroad to shield ICTSI from the effects of declining global trade growth. Mr. Razon also emphasized the value of discipline as a core component of ICTSI’s success story.

10

“Crisis or no crisis, we stay disciplined. And when downturns do come, as they will, we do what we need to: cut costs, control our expansion, manage our liabilities, save on capital. Prudent corporate and financial management afford us the leeway to engage in seemingly risky ventures.” Mr. Razon says there are opportunities arising from volatile situations which ICTSI can take advantage of – and that is something the company has become very good at during its quarter of a century existence.

GEARING UP

ICTSI orders Terex equipment for Iraq operations International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) has tapped Terex Ports Solutions (TPS) to supply Basra Gateway Terminal in Umm Qasr, Iraq with two eco-friendly quay cranes and three rubber-gantry cranes (RTG). ICTSI placed the equipment orders as BGT continues to develop and expand its operations at the Port of Umm Qasr, the largest port in Iraq and the country’s primary economic gateway. Terex is expected to deliver the equipment by Q2 2016. The quay cranes are 100 percent electric, with an outreach of 42 meters and hoisting height of 32 meters above the quayside. They will be deployed primarily to service feeder vessels. The

RTGs on the other have a 37-ton maximum lifting capacity and hoisting height of 18.1 meters, which allow it to stack standard containers 1-over-5. A part of the material handling and port solutions business segment of Terex Corporation, TPS is also the previous supplier of 24 RTGs deployed in ICTSI’s terminals in the Philippines, Madagascar and Brazil. ICTSI signed a contract with the General Company for Ports of Iraq last year to operate and manage the port’s existing facility at Berth 20, as well as build a new container and general cargo terminal at the Port of Umm Qasr.

CMSA gets new yard cranes International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI)’s subsidiary Contecon Manzanillo S. A. (CMSA) recently took delivery of six Kalmar E-One2 rubber tired gantry cranes for the Specialized Container Terminal (SCT) at the Port of Manzanillo in Mexico. CMSA purchased the new equipment from Kalmar during 1Q 2015 to address the growing volumes at the SCT as the Port of Manzanillo continues to aggressively position itself as the leading port in Latin America. “Container traffic has increased, even surpassing productivity targets for the new terminal, and existing port capacity has doubled. Today, we can confirm that we are meeting our commitment to make Manzanillo the country’s leading port,” says Fortino Landeros, CMSA General

Manager. The Kalmar E-One2 model is known for its low-emission diesel engine and all-electric trolley, turning and spreader. It also boasts of an industry best 1,000hour maintenance interval. ICTSI flagship Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) also commissioned four units of the E-One2 last month. ICTSI and Kalmar, which is part of Cargotec, have established a successful partnership over the years as majority of the equipment deployed in ICTSI’s terminals are supplied by Kalmar. "We ordered from Kalmar because we believe that their equipment is first class. They presented the best design and quality and Kalmar offers the best maintenance service for us. We work with Kalmar technicians who are here in Manzanillo to support our maintenance

team to keep the equipment working at its optimum. The after-market services ensure that everything is working perfectly once the equipment arrives at the terminal, and on time to keep our customers satisfied," says Mr. Landeros. The new RTGs come pre-installed with the necessary hardware to support the Kalmar SmartPort process automation solutions, which include the Kalmar SmartRail automated steering system for RTGs, Kalmar SmartLift automated job promotion and handoff solution between container handling equipment and trucks, and the KalmarStack automated inventory solution. CMSA is set to deploy these automation solutions in the future.
