ICTSI wins excellence award MICT terminal booking system, CSR initiatives cited
I
nternational Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) recently won the 2016 Gawad Sinop Corporate Award for Excellence in Supply Management Practices by the Philippine Institute for Supply Management (PISM) and the Foundation of the Society of Fellows in Supply Management (SOFSM).
The award is conferred to corporations that exhibit leadership in promoting supply management as a strategic contributor, leading to the enhancement of the supply management profession in an organization. “It is an honor for us to receive this prestigious award, which reflects the quality of work values and culture that we have at ICTSI,” says Antonio Coronel, Asia Pacific Business Services Inc. (APBS) General Manager. In this year's edition, only ICTSI made it to the final screening. ICTSI’s entry, “Supply Management Excellence in ICTSI,” highlighted some of the Company’s key innovations in warehousing, logistics, purchasing and sourcing, customer service, and corporate social responsibility.

The Terminal Appointment Booking System (TABS), a global best practice in online container booking, was the highlight of the entry. TABS is designed to help decongest road traffic in Metro Manila by optimizing the flow of trucks in and out of the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT). “We decided to put the spotlight on TABS because of its concrete and timely results. Based on the data we gathered since we implemented the system, we’ve been able to optimize the flow of trucks in and out of the terminal which benefits not only the stakeholders but also the commuting public,” says Reynaldo Mark Cruz, ICTSI Information Technology Systems and Services Director. The entry also featured ICTSI’s role in the relief and

in supply management rehabilitation efforts in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. Upon the initiative of the Philippine Ports Authority, ICTSI took over the badly damaged Tacloban Port and brought manpower and equipment to facilitate the flow of relief goods into the region. ICTSI operated the port for more than six months, helping Tacloban get back up on its feet. “The onslaught of Haiyan put ICTSI’s core competence in logistics and port operations to good use – that of helping the government access disasterstricken areas through port-to-poor flow of relief goods,” says Filipina Laurena, ICTSI Foundation Deputy Executive Director.
“ICTSI led stakeholders in assisting the Department of Social Welfare and Development, bringing to the fore the beauty of convergence and time, efforts and resources in logistics, achieving efficiency not only in costs but also in meeting its objectives to help the survivors. “At that time, ICTSI, its employeevolunteers, local and foreign shipping lines, barge operators, fuel and construction companies, and truckers stood together to help the government access and send relief assistance to Tacloban,” she adds. ICTSI joins other Sinop corporate awardees, including Avon, Nestle and Kraft, who made significant
contributions to the supply chain and logistics industry in the country. ICTSI received the award during the 24th Supply Link International Supply Management Conference and Exhibit last 16 June at the Marriott Grand Ballroom in Newport City, Pasay City. A committee was convened to prepare the entry. The team was composed of Mr. Coronel, Ms. Laurena, Mr. Cruz, Mariel Zamora, MICT Procurement Director, Alexander Legados, ICTSI Engineering Manager, Erika Ambrosio, MICT Client Relations Manager, Joy Lapuz, ICTSI Foundation Program Operations Manager, and Jupiter Kalambakal, ICTSI Public Relations Manager. The Gawad Sinop Awards is an annual, nationwide search for outstanding achievers in supply management. It was launched in 1994 by SOFSM and PISM as a means to recognize supply management professionals who have made commendable contributions to the practice of the profession. Founded originally as Purchasing Association of the Philippines in November 1968, PISM provides a forum where purchasing executives can discuss, find and share business solutions to common operational challenges and strategic issues that confront their respective businesses and/or those of the national economy. A non-profit organization founded in 2006, SOFSM serves as the advocacy arm of the PISM. It is composed of supply management executives driven by volunteerism and common desire to help elevate the expertise and status of Filipino business and industry in the field of Supply Management.

ICTSI Iraq rolls out NAVIS SPARCS N4 By Sheeba Khan
Basra Gateway Terminal (BGT), the leading container terminal in Umm Qasr, Iraq, and Navis, a part of Cargotec Corp. and the global technology standard for managing cargo movement in terminals, recently announced the successful implementation of the Navis Sparcs N4 terminal operating system (TOS) at BGT.
Upgrading to Navis Sparcs N4 from an in-house operating system will help BGT achieve key operational goals by enhancing customer experience and at the same time increase terminal productivity by managing resources in a more efficient way while improving the safety of employees. This is an important milestone in BGT’s rapid growth as it ensures optimization and improvement of the overall effectiveness to support future growth. It also underscores BGT’s commitment to a global gold standard TOS for their customers. “With the goal of expanding our throughput capacity with the new container berth coming operational in Q3 this year, combined with our rapid growth in the first two years of operation, we looked for best-in-class technologies that will enable us maintain our high quality service. Navis offered the best solution in the market as illustrated by its wide use globally,” says Phillip Marsham, BGT CEO. The implementation of Navis Sparcs N4 TOS was solely managed on-site by internal resources from ICTSI in the EME region. Their hard efforts ensured excellent support in providing on-site implementation, training and go-live back up on time and within budget. Overcoming challenges Considering that no other terminal in Umm Qasr uses Navis, BGT needed to overcome several challenges to implement a modern TOS with this project scope. “The project was more challenging given the fact that we are the only terminal in Iraq that uses Navis. There was also the problem with the availability of local resources in the market,” says Sebastiano Cerneka, ICTSI Information Technology Head for Europe and Middle East Region. The environment surrounding the port made it difficult for Navis to allocate their consultants for on-site support. As a result, BGT sought the help of Navis super users from the Adriatic Gateway Container Terminal in Rijeka, Croatia along with IT and operations experts from the Manila International Container Terminal, ICTSI’s flagship and global headquarters in the Philippines. 6
BGT is the first in Iraq to use the cutting-edge technology of Navis.

The new terminal operating system presents a new way of working for operations personnel at BGT. All the months of preparation helped facilitate the smooth transition from GTS to Navis N4.
BGT’s customers also faced extensive local requirements compared to other terminals, which made the system analysis and design process more intricate. “We were focused on providing targeted training to the local staff as much as possible before going live. We started on-site training three months before the go-live, which included all Iraqi
personnel from the Operations and Billing departments.” Go-live BGT rolled out Navis Sparcs N4 on 15 May. The successful implementation was managed solely by internal ICTSI resources from Manila and the EME region.

“This is the first time any terminal in the world has implemented NAVIS N4 with no on-site NAVIS professional services support,” says Mr. Cerneka. “I am proud to say with excellent team work and interdepartmental coordination, not only did we make it through, we exceeded expectations. In the 10 days after the golive, BGT processed more than 5,500 truck transactions and operated on six vessels with N4. During that period, BGT also issued 1,200 invoices using N4 Billing. This is an amazing achievement especially for the ICTSI’s Navis Project Implementation Team and the local staff who have been preparing for months.” Looking forward to the future Mr. Marsham sees the immense benefits
that will stem from the implementation of the new TOS. “Implementing Navis is an innovative, forward-thinking step for the terminal. It will help ensure that BGT can continue to keep improving on our service commitments, and empower further enhancement of service delivery, reinforcing our position as a key terminal operator in the Iraqi market. A night of fun and farewells in BGT By Sheeba Khan On the eve of 24 May, the staff of BGT took a well-deserved break by heading to Basra Family Fun Park for some recreation. After spending time on the rides, everyone sat down for pizza, burgers and unlimited fizzy drinks. The trip to the fun park was one way to celebrate BGT’s recent achievements, especially the implementation of the new TOS. It was also a chance to bid the NAVIS team farewell after a very hectic and successful implementation. Aside from the NAVIS team, the staff also said goodbye to Operations Manager Rico Cruz, who is returning to Manila after his tour in Iraq.

South Cotabato Integrated Port Services, Inc. (SCIPSI) was recently conferred the Gold Employer of the Year Award (International) at the annual Investors in People Awards 2016 last 30 June at the Old Billingsgate Market in London. The awards celebrates the best people management practices among businesses worldwide. The Gold Employer of the Year (International) award is given to high-performing and high-achieving organizations that show commitment to exceptional practices like involving people, enabling learning, identifying poor practices and ideas for improvement, rewarding ideas, competitiveness and innovation. VICT names recipients of Community Investment Fund for 2016

Victoria International Container Terminal Limited (VICT) has announced that 14 organizations working with young people in Port Phillip and Hobson’s Bay will each receive grants of up to AU$20,000 courtesy of the VICT Community Investment Fund. Anders Dømmestrup, VICT CEO congratulated the recipients saying, “For the second year in a row, VICT is delighted to support so many wonderful community groups working to positively engage and educate the youth and young people across Hobsons Bay and Port Phillip.” Two years since it was established, the Community Investment Fund program now has 31 beneficiary organizations which are expected to deliver an impressive array of services that bolster the health and education of young people. “The Fund is dedicated to building successful communities, and that starts with young people. By focusing on their health and education, we want to help future generations become happy, resilient individuals who will make outstanding community leaders,” adds Mr. Dømmestrup. With VICT’s new container terminal at Webb Dock in the Port of Melbourne scheduled to open for business in early 2017, Mr. Dømmestrup said the Fund was one of several ways for the Company to contribute to local communities. “We have already employed a number of local contractors for the construction phase of our project and we expect more benefits to flow to both local businesses and the State economy from the significant additional capacity we will bring to the import and export trade when we become fully operational.” The grant recipients for 2016 are: 1. Albert Park College (20 additional scholarships and solar energy panels with an energy monitoring system to support a student environmental education unit) 2. Albert Park Primary School (upgrading of their local community-shared playground) 3. Bubup Womindjeka Arts Centre (innovative early childhood program, sustainable garden and cubby house) 4. Footscray Community Arts Centre (creative youth arts program for ‘Art in Public Places’ event) 5. Friends of Westgate Park (educational planting days for local schools)
6. Gateway Community Services (nutrition and educational program for disengaged youth) 7. Kids Thrive (community concert promoting cultural empathy for kids battling discrimination) 8. Les Twentyman Foundation (Tuition & Homework Club for disadvantaged schoolaged children) 9. Life Saving Victoria (OWLE water safety program for over 500 local school children) 10. Middle Park Primary School (instruments, coordinator and tuition for student music program) 11. Southport Uniting Care (Bicycles Over Lunch Time Program for disengaged local school children) Each recipient stands to receive grants that range from AU$2,000 to AU$20,000. Albert Park College received a special grant worth AU$45,000 as part of an ongoing community and educational partnership between the school and VICT. The judging panel for the grants is made up of nine community representatives, including four local school students. “Similar to 2015, it’s great to see such a wide range of organizations represented, and so many different services delivered – from early learning for preschoolers to community arts performances for disadvantaged youth.” VICT’s Community Investment Fund is open yearly to not-for-profit, community organizations who meet the criteria. The next round will open in March 2017. The guidelines will be available by then at www.vict.com.au.

Insulation of power cables to improve operations at MICT Operations at the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) are expected to improve even further after Meralco insulated 42 kilometers of power lines along the port area. The power company undertook the project to address the problem with compromised power lines, which often causes power trips and fluctuations that affect operations at the terminal. “Purely from a power point of view, electricity keeps our operations moving efficiently. But our relationship with our power provider is such that it’s also a matter of securing other people’s cargo. Remember that a lot of cargo is refrigerated, so if you lose power on those freezer containers you ruin the product,
which in turn ruins someone’s business,” says Christian Gonzalez, ICTSI Senior Vice President and Head of Asia Pacific and MICT. The terminal’s location and proximity to the sea exposes the power lines to the elements and corrosive salt spray, which lead to power fluctuations and
interruptions from time to time. MICT had to rely on costly back-up generators to ensure continuous operation whenever there’s a problem with the power supply. With the power lines now properly insulated, the terminal will have less need for generators and instances of equipment repair.

MICT now accepting payment through UCPB Clients of the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) can now settle their payments online using their UCPB accounts. The arrangement between International Container Terminal Services, Inc. and UCPB enables brokers to pay online using UCPB’s internet payment gateway, which has been integrated into MICT’s Advanced Customer Transaction System (ACTS), by selecting UCPB among the list of settlement banks. The secret behind every successful organization is its employees. As such, there is no better form of recognition than to acknowledge employees for their years of dedication and service to the company.
International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) held its annual employee service awards last 9 June in honor of 66 employees who have been with the Company for 20 and 25 years. The annual service awards is one of the highlights of the Company’s 28th anniversary celebration. ICTSI Senior Vice President and Head of Asia Pacific and MICT Christian Gonzalez spearheaded the celebration. Aside from the 20-year and 25-year service awardees, several operations personnel were given Grand Slam Awards for being the most productive prime movers and quay crane operators.

ICTSI aids in creation of Disaster Emergency Operations Centers By Francis J Bartolome
International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), through the ICTSI Foundation, is working with the Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation (PDRC) to establish emergency operations centers (EOC) to serve as command and coordination centers during times of disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, flooding, volcanic eruptions and pandemic risks. The project aims to improve disaster resiliency and preparedness of all sectors through an established collaboration system between the Philippine Government, PDRC, private corporations and humanitarian groups both locally and internationally.
Envisioned to operate 24/7 and allyear round, the EOCs will be situated in areas with easy access to road networks, ports and airport for airlift capacity and provisions for stockpiling and parking. For this purpose, EOCs will be established in Makati, initially, then in Clark Freeport Zone and in Cebu. The facilities will be manned by dedicated teams capable of promoting disaster preparedness among businesses and partners and mobilizing response to different disaster scenarios. Composed of 74 members, the network of businesses and partner agencies will be organized into seven clusters: logistic, telecommunication, water and sanitation, emergency supplies, power fuel and
energy, finance and insurance, and health and emergency services / search and rescue. The PDRF Cluster System will be interoperable with the Philippine Government and United Nations Cluster System counterparts like the World Food Program, UN Children’s Fund, International Organization for Migration,
International Labor Organization and World Health Organization. Once the clustering is complete, the EOC will proceed to create the concept and manual of operations. This will be followed by tabletop exercises and actual drills to continuously improve the system and its protocols.
The EOC will be a command center equipped with state-of-the-art software and communication devices for monitoring impending and immediate disaster effects, and strategizing both quick and long-term assistance for affected communities. ICTSI Foundation supports Brigada Eskwela 2016 By Joy Lapuz The ICTSI Foundation, together with ICTSI scholars and employee volunteers from the Manila International Container Terminal and ICTSI Corporate HR, took part in the Department of Education’s annual Brigada Eskwela last June at the Rosauro Almario Elementary School (RAES) Annex in Parola. The volunteers helped clean and paint two kindergarten classrooms, chairs and the school’s main activity area. The Foundation hopes that activities like this will inspire more employees to support its Employee Volunteerism Program.

The ICTSI Foundation, in partnership with Philippine Business for Social Progress, sponsored two Safe Motherhood Caravans to support the Manila Local Government’s Maternal, Newborn and Child Health and Nutrition Program. The caravans covered topics on safe motherhood practices, family planning, responsible parenthood and PhilHealth membership. Around 400 pregnant women from Parola attended the sessions held at the Rosauro Almario Elementary School and Delpan Sports Complex. OB-Gyn doctors from the Manila Doctors Hospital (MDH) provided consultation during the sessions. A social worker from MDH facilitated a one-day registration for Blue Card, a program by MDH that enables indigent patients to avail of outpatient services and confinement for very low fees. The Manila Health Department also offered free HIV testing.

By Joy Lapuz The ICTSI Foundation was invited to present the Parola Solid Waste Management Project at the 2016 Environment Summit and the 2nd National Integrated Waste Management Exhibition from 21-24 June at the Megatrade Hall in SM Megamall. Marie Bernadette de Guzman, Foundation Program Head for Luzon, discussed how the PSWMP engages communities towards proper and effective management of solid waste. The events were attended by solid waste management experts and advocates from all sectors.
