MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY GENERAL

Dear Members and Colleagues:

We are thrilled to present the Fall edition of Global Connections, shining a spotlight on the crucial theme of water sustainability and positive initiatives. This issue holds special significance as we begin to develop the 2024 IDRA World Congress, hosted by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, with the overarching theme, "Addressing Water Scarcity."

In our cover story, we delve into the collaborative efforts with Skipper Scot Shawyer from the Canada Ocean Racing team, a dedicated advocate for innovative strategies addressing water sustainability challenges. Additionally, we share key insights from the critical discussions at the IDRA Seville Summit in October, underscoring our commitment to environmental sustainability and community well-being. This edition marks a pivotal step in our ongoing efforts to raise awareness about water-positive footprints through responsible operations and sets the stage for meaningful conversations at the upcoming World Congress.

The pressing need for strategic resource management and its direct link to global impact cannot be overstated. In the face of climate change, where water sustainability has become increasingly critical, our community is taking proactive steps to make a positive difference. Notably, after fifty years of dedicated service, we have evolved, changing our name from the International Desalination Association to the International Desalination and Reuse Association, symbolizing our expanded commitment to address the broader spectrum of water challenges.

Sustainable water management goes beyond minimizing our water footprint; it involves actively contributing to water conservation and accessibility initiatives. We advocate for industries not only to use water efficiently within their operations but also to engage in projects that enhance water availability and quality in the communities they serve.

As we approach the 2024 IDRA World Congress, we invite you to be part of the global dialogue on addressing water scarcity. Share your experiences and contribute to shaping policies that will have a lasting impact. Our open call for extended abstracts is one opportunity for participation, and we encourage you to submit before 15 January 2024.

Equally inspiring is the positive change occurring within industries, among our members, and their clients. Many have embraced innovative reuse technologies, significantly improving their water footprint. The IDRA proudly endorses these efforts and encourages others to follow suit, recognizing that collective action is integral to achieving water-positive sustainability goals.

In line with our commitment to the global discourse on climate change and water sustainability, the IDRA will be actively participating in COP 28. This presents an opportunity to amplify our collective voice, share our experiences, and contribute to shaping policies that promote a more resilient and sustainable world.

Furthermore, we can all enhance our alignment with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals and requirements. By integrating these principles into our strategies, we will not only meet current standards but also exceed them, setting a new benchmark for responsible and sustainable practices. In this same light, IDRA is reaching out to like-minded organizations to develop collaboration for complementary programs and practices to become a more valuable association to our members.

Let us continue together to be a force for positive change, setting an example for others. Together, as members of the IDRA, we can make a lasting impact on water sustainability and contribute to a better, more resilient world.

Sincerely,

Shannon McCarthy
