POCATELLO

PARKS & RECREATION Fall/Winter 2015 & 2016

People value the time they spend in city parks, whether walking a dog, playing basketball, or having a picnic.

Welcome to the Parks & Recreation Fall/Winter 2015-2016

School is back in session, football games are being played, and there is a crispness to the evening air—fall is here! With the onset of fall comes a variety of activities perfect for the temperate weather, which will soon be followed by the winter sports for which Idaho is well known. We are fortunate to enjoy a wide range of activities and recreational opportunities in Pocatello. I encourage all of our citizens to get outside and play! Go on a walk, throw a Frisbee with the children, sign up for a softball team, or put on a helmet and ride the bike trails before they are hidden under a blanket of snow. When the white snow comes, dress warm and play some more. Have a neighborhood snowman building contest followed by some hot cocoa and marshmallows. Take the opportunity, especially if you haven’t already, to visit the East Mink Creek Nordic Center for sledding, skiing, and snowshoeing. There are so many options from which to choose. Our Parks & Recreation Department has done an excellent job of organizing these opportunities for the residents of Pocatello—don’t miss out! Please have a happy, safe fall and winter filled with fun with family and friends.

Brian C. Blad, Mayor of Pocatello MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR…. Dear Neighbors; The fall season is upon us! A new school year has begun, the leaves are turning, and with its cool mornings and sunny afternoons, fall remains a great time to enjoy the outdoors. On behalf of myself and the Parks & Recreation Department Staff, a warm welcome to the City of Pocatello’s Fall 2015/Winter 2016 program brochure. We are excited to present a wide array of interesting and exciting opportunities for community members of all ages, and hope that you and your families will explore & utilize the many beautiful parks, open spaces, and extensive & varied

programs and facilities that the City has to offer. How about a ski or snowshoe adventure at our East Mink Creek Nordic Center facility, or an overnight family camp out in a warm & cozy snow yurt? A visit to the City Zoo for one of our Fall/Winter Zoorific special events? Perhaps a children’s dance or swim lesson class, a youth or adult sports league, or a good workout with game of Pickleball at the Community Recreation Center, followed by a relaxing steam room visit? Or maybe some world class trail hiking at City Creek is more your style? Whether your interest is in fitness, nature & the

outdoors, athletics or special events, we hope that you’ll take full advantage of the endless healthy lifestyle benefits our programs & facilities provide. In other exciting news I’d like to share, the Zoo Entrance Improvements are proceeding! The next step in the process is to continue with and complete implementation of the site work, which contains the ADA pathways essential for the remainder of the project, as well as landscaping. I am pleased to report that sufficient funds are in place to complete the site work this year, with work planned to commence sometime in Oc-

tober. Stay tuned for future updates on all of the exciting and significant improvements going on at the Zoo! This Fall & Winter there is a little something for everyone, come see what Pocatello Parks & Recreation has to offer!

Pickleball is coming to the Community Recreation Center! New for the Fall/Winter season, visit the Community Recreation Center (CRC) to try the exciting & fast growing sport of Pickleball. Pickleball is a lively paddle game that combines elements of badminton, tennis & table tennis, and was created with one thing in mind: FUN! It was designed to be easy to learn and play whether you’re five, eighty-five or somewhere in between. The sport is played on a court with roughly the same dimensions as doubles badminton, and can be played in either singles (2 players per court) or doubles format (4 players per court), using wood or composite paddles and a polymer whiffle ball. Pickleball is played similar to tennis, however the smaller court size and decreased speed at which the ball travels (typically one-third the average speed of a tennis ball) make the sport much more accessible to a wider range of players, particularly seniors & children. But don’t be fooled, Pickleball is still a great sport for more competitive players to test their mettle as well. Pickleball schedule of play for October 12, 2015 through March, 2016 is as follows: * Mondays: 8-11am * Tuesdays: 12noon-3pm * Thursdays: 2-5pm * Fridays: 8-11am * Saturdays: 9-11am CRC daily admission fees are $5 for Adults (ages 18+), $3 for Youth (ages 6-17yrs) & Seniors (ages 60+). There is NO COST for CRC Members.

All are invited to come join us at CRC and give Pickleball a try!!

The outdoor recreation program is dedicated to providing quality adventure programs to Pocatello folks that might not have access to them otherwise. To keep costs minimal expect to pitch in- these are NOT guided activities. Teaching skills so people can branch out on their own is a top priority. Fitness level is not as important as motivation;try to break out of your shell. Because of the nature of the programs many are limited in group size to a handful so the instructors can help everyone. Other programs are limited by vehicle capacity, equipment restrictions or logistics. Sign up in advance to ensure a spot. Questions are expected and welcome. Contact Lance: lclark@pocatello.us or 234-6237. He is often on a river or mountain, so be patient and don’t wait until the last minute.
