Mother Goose wins child care facility award By Journal staff
T
racey Smith, owner of Mother Goose Pre-School and Day Care, came to work at the child center 21 years ago and just stayed. “I was attending Idaho State University to teach and I came to work here and just never left,” Smith said. A native of Pocatello, Smith bought the business about 10 years ago and said the day care and preschool is home to 85 children ages 2 to 10 years old each day. Mother Goose is also part of the Steps to Quality program and it just received its first star from the Idaho Quality Rating and Improvement Center. It also won the
Journal’s Readers’ Choice Child Care Facility Award. Pre-school at Mother Goose is set from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. each day, and this summer the children participated in gymnastics and swimming lessons. “We want to treat each child the same way we want our own child to be treated,” Smith said. Mother Goose is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and offer a pickup service from Wilcox, Ellis and Chubbuck Elementary. Mother Goose Pre-School and Day Care employs 13 workers. Smith and her husband, Curtis Smith, have been married for one year and they have a combined family of four children.

Carpet One wins top awards By Journal staff POCATELLO — Treg Bernt, president of the company, said L & K Carpet One Floor & Home is a third-generation, family-owned business with locations in Pocatello and Boise. Bernt said he’s proud to receive the Readers’ Choice Award for best carpet and flooring store, but he’s especially pleased to be honored with the additional award of best customer service overall. “That speaks volumes about our service,” Bernt said. “We appreciate our patrons and they keep coming back.” Located at 129 N. Second Ave., Carpet One specializes in flooring and lighting and features a full
service lighting center. Carpet One provides free estimates and advice for tenant improvement, residential and commercial flooring and lighting. Locally the store employs 13 workers. Carpet One offers professional installation of luxury vinyl tile, ceramic tile, sheet vinyl and laminate flooring. Bernt said the store also provides the “Beautiful Guarantee.” “If you don’t like your floor for whatever reason, we will replace it free of charge, no questions asked,” Bernt said. The company has been at its current location since 1996, but has been doing businesses locally for four decades.
“People enjoy dealing with the local mom-and-pop stores, and with people who really care about Pocatello,” Bernt said. “You don’t get that kind of service or that kind of experience with the big box stores.” A native of Southeast Idaho, Bernt and his wife, Tiffanie, have been married for six years and they have three kids. Treg divides his time between Boise and Pocatello, and he said he’s active in both communities. As the economy rebounds, so does the success of the lighting and flooring store. Treg plans to expand the business and said he’s hired some new people to help him do that. “For us, it’s all about our loyal patrons and it’s our service that keeps them coming back,” Treg said.
