Thai Zap voted 2nd best food truck in Pocatello By Shelbie Harris For the Journal

T

he Thai Zap food truck took the Pocatello community by storm when it opened a little more than a year ago, and Mam and Vanh Phranasith’s continued success has merited second place for food trucks in the area. “It’s awesome to receive this award because we’ve only been open one year and one month,” said co-owner Mam Phranasith. “It’s exciting to know we are liked by so many and we appreciate the people who keep coming back. Mam is from Thailand and her husband, Vanh, is from Laos, and together the couple took a risk opening the first Thai food truck of its kind in Pocatello. The first meal she ever cooked was at 8 years old, and nearly 30 years later, Mam is still serving up traditional street and cuisine style dishes from her homeland. “Food is what keeps people happy,” she said. “So far, I haven’t heard any bad things from my customers, so that must be a good sign.” Mam said the most popular dish by far is

the pad thai ($7 to $8). During the Family Fun Day at the Portneuf Wellness Complex recently, she served one after the other consistently for three hours straight. On a busy day, the food truck can throw down more than 100 different tickets ranging from small, one-person orders to catering deliveries of 30 people or more. “Sometimes we have people come here

for lunch and then I see them back here later in the day for dinner,” Mam said. “I serve people I have never seen before and those who are regulars two or three times a week.” Inspired by the home-cooked meals prepared by her mother and father, Mam decided to relocate them from Thailand to Pocatello during the spring, summer and fall months

and during the winter slack they return home. However, during the wintertime she still cooks from home and will deliver catering orders to anyone interested. When asked to reveal the secret to her success, Mam said she had no secrets but a patron answered for her stating it has to be her warming personality. She said her biggest impediment throughout the process has been securing the proper distributor to provide enough ingredients to ensure she has supply to keep feeding her increasing customer base. “I’m trying to find a place that sells the ingredients locally as the distributor from Salt Lake is only here twice a week,” she said. At 1570 Yellowstone Avenue in the Element Outfitters parking lot, food items range in price from $6 to $10 and feature soups, noodle and stir-fry dishes and a variety of curries. They are open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and are closed Sunday and Monday. More information can be found on their Facebook page, which is updated daily. “Maybe I’ll open a restaurant one day,” she said. “But for now, I stay busy.”

Sojourn’s Tackett voted Pocatello’s best aesthetician By Shelbie Harris For the Journal For the fourth consecutive year Pocatello citizens voted Janet Tackett, the owner of Sojourn European Skin Care, as the best aesthetician in the city. For most, this award would be the highlight of the year, however, such is not the case for Tackett who battled and won the war against stage one breast cancer after being diagnosed in December 2015. “I was really worried because I had to take a whole month off earlier this year,” she said. “With my clients coming in weekly or every other week I was left wondering where they were going in the meantime.” Claiming to have the best, most loyal and trusting clients in the area, Tackett said she recuperated smoothly and is honored to receive the award. She has been in the skin care business since 1984 saying she was the first one to establish the career in the area after relocating from Boston, Massachusetts following her training. “I continuously get education,” she said. “I don’t feel like I know everything and the job is

constantly changing.” Attending conventions in Las Vegas and other conferences across the nation, she thinks trust and word of mouth adds as much to her success as does her steady pursuit of

knowledge. Though technological advances altered the approach to business for many entrepreneurs in today’s consumer driven society, Tackett said she’s old school and sticks to using a writ-

ten appointment book, accepting only cash or check and limiting her Facebook usage. “I don’t have the laptop or a credit card machine,” she said. “I don’t even know if I generate much business from Facebook. I know it really comes down to my amazing clients.” While training in Boston she worked with many different Eastern European women and was able to selectively pluck influence from those around her. According to her, European skin care offers a more intimate and productive experience for her clients. From waxing to facials both female and male alike, Tackett said coming to work delivers an uplifting and euphoric feeling for her, so much so she forgets she’s working. Located in the Pocatello Court Plaza at 250 North 5th Avenue, the spa is Open mostly 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and also by appointment. “Mostly, it’s about not using a lot of equipment,” she said. “It’s more hands on. I like results from what I do whether it’s helping someone with dry skin or acne. But, at the same time they come here and they want to relax and feel pampered so I incorporate that.”

Bi-Lo Market voted 2nd best caterer in Pocatello By Shelbie Harris For the Journal Known as “The Little Chief” during the 1940s and ’50s, Nel’s Bi-Lo Market has been a locally owned, family oriented venture since 1957. What people may not realize is that in addition to the grocery business, the market also features a full-line catering service that includes delivery — service believed by Pocatello to be the second best in the city. “We have a varied menu that includes cooked beef, pork and chicken,” said owner Barry Dutton, who in 2009 took over for longtime owner Todd Nelson. “Our most popular item is the pulled pork — it’s awesome. We also do enchiladas, lasagna, and we have a killer chicken alfredo.” Dutton said the market caters cooked food to insurance companies, churches and Portneuf Medical Center, and on some occasions provides raw meats for organizations such as ON Semiconductor or the Simplot plant, among many others. All the food — the rolls, the potato salad and everything in between — is made from

scratch using fresh, never frozen ingredients. “Most of our catering is done al a carte where people order it and come to pick it up,” Dutton said. “We have done some pretty large-scale catering jobs of 1,000 people or more.”

Over the years, Bi-Lo’s has watched multiple supermarkets and wholesale stores such as Fred Meyer and Costco open their doors to the community, which Dutton said has negatively impacted their produce sales. Additionally, when PMC relocated, Dutton

said it really hurt the traffic seen on 15th street where the market is located. However, with the implementation of the “Meals in a Box” program, the brainchild of Dutton’s daughter, things are starting to look more optimistic. The program, designed to save customers time and money, includes seven meals large enough to feed four people for $60 a week. “The box comes with the ingredients and recipes for seven simple meals,” Dutton said. “It’s actually turned our whole business around. Catering has helped keep us alive, but the Meals in a Box program saved us.” Dutton said people are loving it because everyone is asking the same question once 5 p.m. rolls around: “What’s for dinner?” The Duttons pride themselves on maintaining the highest level of customer service and treat anyone who walks into the store as family. The kind of family who has shopped in the store for generations, even if it’s their first time in the store. “It’s about connecting with the customer and providing a service to them,” he said. “It’s about building relationships and making the customer feel at home, and I think we do that fairly well.”

Howell voted best real estate agent By Shelbie Harris For the Journal After making the list of top three real estate agents last year, Gloria Howell with Gate City Real Estate took home the No. 1 spot for 2016. She said this was an absolutely lovely tribute and that she was totally surprised when she found out. “People know me for being a bottom line, straight up truthful person,” she said. “I was surprised to win because sometimes people don’t like my type of person.” Teaching English and French at the junior high school level for three contributed highly to her success, and she said it really helped her develop clients. “Real estate is like teaching because you must go over something multiple times,” she said. “It’s really important to listen to people and to help them understand what needs to be done. Howell has been in the business for more than 40 years and said her biggest obstacle was surviving the high interest rates for homebuyers during the ‘80s. Over the years, she has worked with clients purchasing their first $100,000 home as well as those who are purchasing their third or fourth home valuing over $500,000. “You have to plan for things to go up as well as for things to go down,” she said. “I’ve remained steady, unrelenting, persistent and tenacious I might add.” Her favorite part of the job is working with people. She understands that in her industry it can’t be about the money, but that if you truly care about the person everything else will fall in line. In addition to teaching, Howell credits much of her success to working with the staff a Gate City Real Estate and her supporting family throughout the years. “It’s always a challenge because everybody has a different story,” she said. “But I have been blessed to do what I love with the amazing people that I love and for people to pay me to help them is awesome.”

Shelbie Harris/For the Journal

Owner Gordon Wilks stands outside of Gate City Real Estate at 804 East Center Street.

Gate City Real Estate voted best of Pocatello By Shelbie Harris For the Journal Gate City Real Estate, currently owned by Gordon Wilks, has been serving the Pocatello community since 1972 and was recently voted the best real estate agency for 2016. Wilks said that for more than 30 years, the secret to his success has been simply believing in what you’re doing and where you want to go in life. “You have to believe that you are delivering a service that adds value,” he said. “We’ve adopted the slogan, “It’s like coming home,” and I think we really believe that.” Each company has its own culture and like-minded people attract to

those cultures, depending on what they believe in, Wilks said. “No matter what business you’re it’s important to find the right group of people to serve and to work with,” he said. “It’s not about us, it’s about our clients.” Every real estate company has to recruit to stay alive, but more importantly it’s about retaining those customers, according to Wilks. Some of his customers have been with him since he acquired the business, and he said the coming of the internet and technology was an explosion in the real estate market. “Everyone was afraid it was going to take us out of business,” he said. “But what we have found is that

people are shopping for homes while sitting in their pajamas. But when they buy they are doing it from someone they trust.” In regards to accepting this award, Wilks said he appreciates the recognition but ultimately that’s not his driving factor. Wilks added that he wants his customers to feel safe, to feel important, and it’s about them rather than the numbers. “So much of what we do is based on the linear — the number of transactions, the bottom dollar,” he said. “All that has to come out in the end, but if your life is driven by the linear that’s fine, but that’s not what I’m about.”
