United Arab Emirates Wind Energy Outlook Now Available at iData Insights United Arab Emirates Wind Energy Outlook Summary The United Arab Emirates (UAE) comprises seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras al-Khaimah, Fujairah, Umm al-Quwain, and Ajman. As of year-end 2014, it stands eighth globally on total proved oil reserves and seventh on total proved natural gas reserves. Renewable energy is economically attractive in the UAE, with solar and wind being the most competitive. A 10% share of renewable energy in the total energy mix stands to generate annual savings of $1.9 billion annually with 2.5 Gigawatts (GW) of solar, wind, and waste-to-energy by 2030. Abu Dhabi has committed more than $15 billion to renewable energy programs, which in turn will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) is a green energy firm that has a number of renewable energy projects in the UAE and abroad and is focused on developing a low-carbon zero-waste city. In January 2015, Masdar launched the UAE Wind Atlas, designed to further aid the development of wind farms in coastal areas and on islands. The atlas contains data on wind intensity and direction at varying elevations from 10 to 120 meters, intended to be used by experts for in-depth viability studies. The highest wind intensity recorded is along the coast of Fujairah and on Sir Bani Yas Island. However, in Fujairah, land issues have prevented any developments. Initially, the UAE did not appear to have strong wind potential due to relatively weak wind speeds. The coastal area of Abu Dhabi has an average monthly wind speed of 4.2-5.3 meters per second (m/s). Although the UAE s wind resources are much less abundant than solar, they still show reasonable potential, especially in the northern Emirates, or offshore for specific applications and local island grids. The forecast production of total electricity via wind energy is 0.16 Terawatt hours (TWh) per year by 2030.
