Bjรถrn Bengtsson

About me I’m a 28 year old Swedish designer, currently finishing my master thesis at Lund University. With a great passion for design and sports, my ambition is to continue my career in these sectors. During my design studies, my interest has shifted from solely hard products, to include footwear and now a growing interest of soft goods and technical clothing. Each project opens my eyes for new sources of influence and inspiration. and my thirst for knowledge is also a strong motivational force. In the end, I pursued this path because I love to solve problems. I hope you will enjoy my solutions. Thank you!

Puma internship During my internship at the PUMA headquarter in Germany, I had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of footwear related project for a period of six months. Working with both color & materials department as well as the design department, gave me a very in depth taste of what the footwear industry has to offer. Among other things, I had the opportunity to work on special make-up styles, color and material specifications, designs of new uppers and a lot of graphic design projects.

Puma bowfighter A sail shoe concept for the crew members on the bow of the boat, who are in need of extra protection around ankle and forefoot. Sailors who work on the front of the deck, work in a high-pace, on the most hazardous part of the boat. Many prefer a mid-cut shoe, for the extra protection it offers, both in terms of blows to the feet as well as the extra stability.

Building the concept around a mid-cut shoe, for extra support. The vamp has been cleaned up to make place for a protective bumper, as well as the lacing in the heel is less likely to get tangled in objects.

Heel lacing:

Bumper:

The lacing has been moved to the heel to keep the laces from getting tangled with other objects.

The high and wide collar and the vamp is protected by a thick silicone pad, to hinder unnecessary accidents. The collar is made wide for preserved flexibility around the ankle.

Flex point:

Cutout in the bumper enable flexibility of the forefoot, and ventilate moist.

Shank track:

Outsole has a cutout reinforced by PVC under the shank for balancing on rope or maintain stronghold. There is also an integrated valve to get rid of water of water inside the shoe.

Sole stability: Outsole has increased width at the widest part of the forefoot and heel to minimize rolling of the ankles.

SasquashIIMid In this project I was assigned to create a new version of the Sasquash winter boot, using a different outsole than the predecessor. This was one of the first projects where I got to create the design, color and material specifications, and also the first that made it in to the market place. The shoe is now available in the PUMA web shop, as well as several other stores.

Puma v1.10 Kanji The task was to create a graphic pack for the v1.10 soccer boot, with an Asian theme, that expressed speed. This design is now released and featured on PUMA’s homepage as well as several football blogs and stores around the world. Afterwards my graphics has also been transferred to other products, like goalie gloves and footballs.

Telescopic saw

The task was to create a cutting tool that had different appearance in on- and off-mode. My finished product was an telescopic oscillating hacksaw. This was the main project during my exchange studies as FH-Joanneum in Graz, Austria. A cutting powertool for home use, with a morphing quality was what we were assigned to do. The color scheme was predetermined and with weekly teacher-to-student meetings, it was a very educational experience to another way of working.

After pursuing four different concepts, my concept became a bandsaw with a telescopic arm and oscillating blade. My research led me to portable band saws, made for heavy, quick and effective cutting in material that is not substantially thicker or harder than what you cut with a normal hand- or hacksaw. Its peculiar appearance was also an aspect that made me choose this object as the starting point.

Electric telescopic oscillating saw

Giving it the characteristics of a hacksaw with the power of a band saw, and small amount of space consumption when being stored away. When you combine this with a futuristic aesthetic, it makes an interesting saw concept.

“What can you bring to the table?” Milan furniture fair 2008

What can you bring to the table’ was a group project where no one had to compromise. Each part of the chair was designed independently without any influence from the other participants.

The chair I was involved with, was the ‘Awkward’-one, which opened up to some amusing results. I focused on basic geometrical shapes, that did not fit together visually , and that would not seem to be able to support or fill the function that was required of it.

Nike Lebron casual My entry for the ‘Project Bluefoot’ contest. The task was to create a casual shoe for Lebron James. A chance for me to work on more footwear related products on my own during my Puma-internship. My personal goal was to work effective and give it a few hours each night. It was also a good opportunity to work on parts of the shoe that I was unfamiliar with.

A forward leaning open collar on a clean shoe, which still has the ability to perform when needed to. The shoe was inspired by winter- and cowboyboots, mainly because of their relaxed and rugged appearance. The most iconic part became the forward leaning collar, that has a split heel, meant to give a slight overhang like Timberland boots, as well as to support the leg of loose fit jeans.

Urban birdhouse A workshop for developing our three dimensional thinking, and teach us about concrete casting. Our ambition was to push our conception of what is possible to create with concrete. The concept was pretty simple. We wanted to create a cast concrete birdhouse, which had a suspension that did not require any drilling or hammering. We created everything in one single mold, including the inner housing with the help of Styrofoam and ethanol. In collaboration with Johan Kroon

NB sprints

A sprint spike shoe for New Balance. A good chance to look harder at sprinters and the mechanics of running. Watching a lot of recordings of races, and high-fps movies of sprinters and their technique, my concept was aimed at runners who suffer from unwanted movement in the foot, where is twists from side to side. A big inspiration was the placement of the feet during the accelleration phase, where they tend to shift in to a V-position, similar to how hockeyplayers and cross country skiers move position their feet for gripping the surface.

Ballroom wingtips

My first entry for a shoe design competition. The brief was to create the “Jordan XXV”, giving me the chance to get a deeper look in to the heart of the sneaker culture. I found my inspiration in the arena where it takes place, where I drew parallels to dancing between two parties. I also wanted to find a detail about Michael Jordans skills, that stood in the shadows, but was an integral part of his success. That skill was his ‘fadeaway’ shots. The original Jordan 1’s

The activity is based on wakeboarding, without a motorboat. Instead the riders build a winch with go-kart engines. A spool with 200 meters of rope, lets them ride wherever they can imagine. After a lot of field research and discussions, I decided to investigate a route that would make them even more mobile, which would let them ride spots that were harder to reach, making less noise and not attract unwanted attention.

There were some key issues that I decided to address, after my field studies. Weight, sound and rope logistics were the most important ones. I found some behavior that helped me solve key problems. Working with a lot of full scale sketch models, and detailed solutions of the mechanics of the winch, made it a successful process. Main design criteria: - Simple construction and manufacturing - 20 kg including batteries - 30 pulls per charge - 7 m/s top speed - Silent operation Orthographic layout comparison

At the moment the project is in the prototype phase. A majority of the parts are CNC-bend or cut with a water jet. It is lightweight, strong and efficient. Rationalizing and reevaluating the key parts and mechanics proved successful with the users. Further more, with inspiration from the subcultures and the heritage from which the phenomenon stems from, the result did get a lot of character. The presentation is expected during spring 2011.
