Healthcare

Two major healthcare systems serve Bay and Walton counties and surrounding areas on the Emerald Coast: Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center and Ascension. Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center, located in Panama City, is a 223-bed acute care hospital that has served Bay County and surrounding communities for over 40 years. Certified in Advanced Primary Stroke Care and accredited as a Comprehensive Breast Care Center, it is the area’s only Accredited Chest Pain Center.

Ascension is one of the leading non-profit and Catholic health systems in the U.S. Ascension hospitals on the Emerald Coast include Ascension Sacred Heart Bay, a regional hospital serving Bay County and surrounding communities, and Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast. Ascension Medical Group Sacred Heart offers the largest network of primary care and specialty physicians in northwest Florida.

Education

Gulf Coast State College (GCSC) in Panama City offers a range of four-year degree programs as well as associate degree programs. GCSC also offers a strong continuing education component that is open to learners at all stages of life. Education Encore is a program offered by Continuing Education at Gulf Coast State College that provides noncredit enrichment education classes on a variety of topics for adults. Programs are offered in the arts, culinary arts, graphic design, photography, languages, writing, and more. Classes meet at the Panama City campus.

Florida State University (FSU), Panama City, provides a four-year undergraduate experience and graduate programs. FSU also offers the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). This program is tailored for adults 50 and older who love to learn in a stress-free environment where there are no tests or homework. OLLI membership offers access to a broad range of classes on many topics ranging from art to yoga. For convenience, OLLI programs are located at various sites along Highway 30A.

There also are many performing arts offerings, including the Panama City Symphony Orchestra, live theatre, music festivals, and more. The Aaron Bessant Park Amphitheater is a state-of-the-art facility that hosts world-famous musicians, festivals, including one of the top 10 jazz festivals in the U.S. —the Seabreeze Jazz Festival, and community performances. It is located in Panama City Beach next to Pier Park.
