The Land of Natural Wonders
From the Appalachian Mountains in the east to the banks of the Mississippi River in the west, Tennessee truly is a land of natural wonders. The state’s genuine four-season climate features mild winters and comfortable days with relatively low humidity in the summer. Tennessee is perfect for year-round outdoor recreations, whether you prefer to hike the highland trails, tee it up on championship golf courses, boat, kayak, or fish on the numerous freshwater lakes.
In addition to being a tax-friendly place to live, Tennessee has the sixth-lowest average annual cost of living in America, more than 10% below the national average. That includes lower than average monthly costs for budget basics like housing, groceries, and utilities. Of perhaps greatest importance to retirees and other senior residents, Tennesseans pay nearly 11% less on healthcare costs than Americans in other states.
Tennessee offers retirees and families plenty of choices for their next place to call home with new and established luxury communities located throughout the state.
West Tennessee is filled with history and nature from battlefields to sport fishing to small Southern towns. This region is full of culture and music along with rivers and lakes that are perfect for fishing and kayaking.
Nashville is “Music City USA” and the region’s economic dynamo with two professional sports teams, a thriving cultural arts scene anchored by the downtown campus of Vanderbilt University, and a unique full-scale replica of the Greek Parthenon in Centennial Park.

East Tennessee is known for its diversity from pristine lakes to rolling countryside and some of the tallest mountains east of the Mississippi River. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Cherokee National Forest are comprised of incredible landscapes, with streams, rivers, and trails that cross the rugged mountains. But, it’s not all outdoors, there are also cultural hotspots in hip Southern cities.
The fourth largest city in Tennessee is Chattanooga has the fastest internet in the country. Every house and business has access to 1-gigabit per second.
Tennessee enjoys a moderate four-season climate with average daily highs in the low to mid-80s during the summer and the 50s during the winter. Some snowfall is expected during January and February, especially in the highlands of East Tennessee, but it usually melts in a few days. Spring showers encourage abundant seasonal growth, but the fall months are dry and refreshingly cool.
The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development offers the “Retire Tennessee” program, which promotes Tennessee as an ideal place for retirees to call home. The program consists of 14 rural and urban counties located across the state. Tennessee is home to urban places and wide-open spaces with lots of scenic room to roam. Outside the main cities, natural attractions are our state’s focal points, where the only music is a songbird or a flowing stream of water. Boating, fishing, and hiking are popular outdoor recreational activities, especially at any one of the 57 state parks. Visit RETIRETENNESSEE.ORG to find fun and adventure... naturally.
Tennessee attracts history buffs from all over the United States and internationally, too.
Visit the 14 stops along the U.S. Civil Rights Trail which tell the stories of the brave men and women who brought words to action through peaceful protest and legal actions to secure their rights during the 1950s and 1960s. It is known for its historical preservation of Civil War Battlefields, such as Shiloh, Lookout Mountain, and Stones River. Tennessee is also part of the Trail of Tears, beginning east of Chattanooga and heading north toward Kentucky. Tennessee has that magic you can only taste in every sip of oak-barrelaged Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey and each bite of “I’ve-died-and-gone-to heaven” Southern cooking.
The Music! The foot-tapping, head-bobbing, soul-saving kind. Country, blues, rock, and everything in between. Where it all started and never stopped. Not just heard on headphones, but on stages, porches, and street corners. You can’t download it. You can only experience it. The Soundtrack of America. Made in Tennessee.
