The Oslo DIY Ideas Workshop /// 05. - 09.november 2012
10 QUICK FIXES to improve quality of urban space in Oslo
2
The DIY Oslo Ideas Workshop invited 42 students of landscape architecture to think of new ways to improve their city, based on the simple notation that we are all stakeholders and agents of change in our own community. Within a limited area of Oslo now under development and seeing rapid transformation, the students where asked to recognize challenges and possibilities that emerge in such areas. With that in mind, they were asked to propose quick fixes that improves the quality of that place as an urban and public space. This publication presents what they proposed. The result are 10 designs proposing immediate change to public space and urban transformation. The designs are based on specific characteristics in an area of transformation in Oslo. Still, the 10 ideas can be viewed as generic in the way that they could be adapted to any place. In that sense, 10 quick fixes to improve quality of urban space in Oslo can be read as a modern pattern book of ideas on temporary interventions in urban landscapes.

About the workshop
CASES
The Oslo DIY ideas workshop was arranged in Oslo 05.-09. november 2012, with 42 students of landscape architecture. The workshop was part of the course Introduction to landscape urbanism at The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO), led by prof. Hettie Pisters. Together with masterstudents from this course, bachelorstudents in landscape architecture led by Corinna Clewing from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) joined the 5-day workshop for a joint effort led by Christoffer Olavsson Evju of Norconsult AS. The planning authorities in Oslo (PBE) provided a venue for the opening- and final sessions, as well as knowledge and feedback.
Divided into 10 groups, each group was given the task to produce a design. The groups worked with cases within three areas in Oslo; Ensjø, Løren and Økern – all areas characterized by being in a state of urban transformation. LIMITATIONS With the task, there was also a set of limitations. All ideas was supposed to be low budget, low-tech, easy to manage, and possible to realize within the next 12 months. With the introduction of a do-it-yourself attitude towards urban development, the students was challenged to come up with simple and quick fixes to a specific challenge. The Oslo DIY Ideas Workshop invited the studets to think of new ways to improve their city, based on the simple notation that we are all stakeholders and agents of change in our own community.
TASK The participants where asked to make a design that improves the quality of an urban space in a given case area in Oslo. They where also asked to communiticate why exactly the chosen place has opportunities that should be utilized in the way they suggest. The design they where asked to come up with could be a physical form or a new product, but also a service, an event or other activity - as long as it improves the quality of that place as an urban and public space. As quick fixes is all about doing, attention was put on designing the processes that would lead to a result.
PUBLICATION To document the result, all groups were asked to prepare a written presentation of their design based on a pre-made template. This publication is the therefore simply the 10 presentations put together, combined with this short introduction.

10 QUICK FIXES

Quick fix 1:
Ensjø Moments
The idea of the project is to create an attractive streetscape that is more personal to community members and welcoming for potential residents by projecting images or perspectives of community members on a street that is still undergoing transformation. pictures of them or of the area, which will be projected onto the building façade during dark hours. In this way, the people will be able to share a sense of belonging to the area as well as a more beautiful nightscape. The construction of this site is due to finish in the first quarter of 2013, but the district has plans to eventually develop the rest of the area into housing complexes. At least seven more new projects will be erected along this road so that the project can be extended over a longer period of time.
WHY Ensjø area has mostly been known for its car dealer shops. Now that the municipality has drafted plans to transform the area into a residential neighborhood, a physical makeover of the site has begun. Much of the area is now under construction or will soon be taken down. With some housing, some auto shops, and some construction sites, the identity of the place is unsettled and this is reflected in the streetscape. The project aims to create a nice streetscape that will help the area have a stronger sense of community.
HOW The content projected onto the building should be personal or local and have a positive effect on the area. We want the projection to contrast the impersonal and commercial feel of the area with its auto dealer shops and dead spaces. The criteria for the contents are that 1) the photo was taken in Ensjø; 2) it is non-commercial; 3) it is an original work; 4) it conveys a reflective message.
WHAT The site chosen is a building under construction on Gladengveien, the road connecting Ensjøveien and Grenseveien. Leading down to the Ensjø T-bane station, one side of the road is car dealer shops and the other side is construction sites for housing. The road does not have heavy traffic and is usually used by cars passing through or people going to shop in the supermarket at the end of the road. We chose to use the building during the months before the construction is finished as a projection screen for the Ensjø community. Residents will be invited to send in preparation okt

We like to start of the contest whit asking people to take pictures off hands from Ensjø. Either their own hand or somebody else’s hand from Ensjø. We hope the elderly let us portrait their hands and that the younger people in high school will be creative them self ’s. We hope this will be a god way to grate the start off the project. The hand is both personal butt at the same way not to exposed.
I. i. Ensjø Moments. First photo contest “Hands”
will try to visit the elderly home or kindergarten to involve different groups of the community. Like the first, there will be various themed series for the content to be shown for a period of time (i.e. bi-weekly themes). A winner will be chosen for each theme and announced through the ‘Ensjø Moments’ page. In this way, it is possible to have people more actively participating in the project and give it variation during different months. In between the themed series, we will continue to show general photos that have been submitted by the Ensjø community that meet the criteria. In addition to photo submissions, there will be a drawing competition in the area’s primary schools and a collection of positive messages related to the area.
will be posted around the site and projected on the building side. The team will seek cooperation with the builders to hang appropriate material on the building that will serve as a projection screen. After a week, the submitted photos will be projected on the building during dark hours. Each picture will have 8 seconds on the screen so that the scenery changes fast enough for passing cars and pedestrians but not so often that it is flashy and distracting. The project will start with a photo contest asking people to enter pictures of either their own hand or somebody else’s hand from Ensjø. A picture of a hand does not expose someone too publicly but at the same time is still very personal. The project team INPUT Operation ca. 100,000 kr

Quick fix 2:
BusyboxEnsjø
What:
To make this bar accessible we want to have several entrances when placed on the ground, transparent and flip-able walls. This will contribute to create an open and inviting expression. When lifted up for an event, these entrances will be closed and the transparent walls give a panoramic view over Ensjø.
We were inspired by the large cranes sweeping over the area and thought that they could help us make this project both portable and temporary. The project consists of three containers put together as a café and bar with an intimate atmosphere. These containers can be leased for different events. For example for a bachelor party or a lunch meeting. The tenant can choose size and locations. After an event the crane operator or café management choose a new hidden location within Ensjø, to play “hide and seek” with the visitors.
Why:
Ensjø is in a transition from being an industrial site to become an attractive residential area in Oslo. This results in a lot of construction work and we want to give all the involved parts a social meeting place, both the workers and the new inhabitants. Our focus is to achieve a social activity and make this bar into a including meeting arena for these people.
Since the location is changed rapidly we want the users to explore the neighborhood searching for the bar. There are installed several glowing lights on the container, and that is the only hint to be led by. The glowing light is characteristic bright green and shall be recognizable from long distances. The glowing light is inspired by the design of the public toilets placed around in Oslo.

We want to improve Ensjøs reputation as a car-city and change it into an innovative and attractive place. This green box will give Ensjø stronger identity and be recognizable.
22
Ill. 1
How:
We create a company called Ensjø event agency, which runs the business and take care of all tasks involved. Such as leasing, cleaning, procurement and finances. This project has to be sponsored, and the temporality of the project depends on how many sponsors we get.
Since it is a construction site we wanted to use easy and accessible materials such as containers, used car seats, cable drums and pallet collars. This makes the whole project low on budget and gives a “keep it simple” expression.
Busy box will be open every day as a café and pub. But it’s closed for public when leased. We also picture an expansion of programs if it runs well, Such as quiz and intimate concerts.
Ill.1: Busy box, concept drawings. The green boxes on the top shows some of the various shapes when located on the ground. The walls are flip-able to make it more accessable and creates outdoor spaces. When airborne, the walls are closed for security reasons.

Quick fix 3
Timeline Talk and Walk The youth and senior citizens of Ensjø get together for a fun and educational event to preserve their local history and identity.
WHY Ensjø is a place in transition. The physical environment is changing fast. The last 100 years the area has developed from an industrial area with brick, tobacco and matchstick factories to a sale and service oriented car city – and now it is becoming a residential area. During such drastic changes, how can we preserve local history and identity?
in the area. Along the route, stops will be made on several sites and a talk about each site will be given by someone with an interesting story to share. Some of the stories might about spaces that are lost, some about existing places, and some about the future. If these stories, memories and expectations are shared among the community members, hopefully their relation to both the place and each other will grow stronger and local history and identity preserved.
WHAT We believe that history is the key to understanding Ensjø as a place. Ensjø has a history worth keeping alive. We want the old and young people in the Ensjø community to get together and share their stories and expectations. It could be personal stories or historical facts or something else, as long as they are connected to a visitable location in the area. As part of the community they can all relate to the spaces in Ensjø in one way or another, and by hearing the stories and learning something new about their surroundings, they will perceive their neighbourhood in a new way. Aware of their heritage as Ensjø citizens as well as future plans, they will be better prepared for inhabiting the new Ensjø city.
IMPACT By making this an annual event, the participants in the event will change, and so will the sites and the area. This will make it a dynamic happening, and throughout the years an increasing percentage of the community will have participated. Our goal is for this short event to have a long term impact on the community with an increasing percentage of the community being aware and proud of the space they use in their daily lives.

SUGGESTED EVENT PROGRAM (100 pupils + 20 senior citizens) 1. Meet in meeting spot. 2. Make 10 groups (10 pupils + 1 senior guide).
3. The 10 storytellers go to their sites. 4. The groups walk the route and stop to listen at the sites. 5. All of the groups gather in the meeting spot. 6. Enjoy event finale with campfire and food.
Ill. 4 Ill. 3: Example route: This is how a tour could be. The actual routes would of course depend on the people telling their stories and their relation to sites in Ensjø. In this route, the Tiedemanns Tobakksfabrikk is marked as one of the sites. Ill. 4: “Berit” (93) tells the story about how this area was filled with handsome industrial workers back in the days when the factory was running.
28
HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN 1. Contact school and senior centre administration. 2. The administrators need to find at least one person from their institution willing to organize the event. These become contact persons. 3. Arrange a meeting with contact persons and form a committee working towards the event. 4. Committee visits the institutions to inform and recruit storytellers + guides. 5. Educate storytellers + guides. 6. Plan a route with connected stopping sites and set the event day. 7. Contact land owners for permission to enter sites during the event. 8. Promote the event at the schools by informing teachers, pupils and parents. 9. Buy equipment and food to prepare for the event day.

Quick fix 4:
Grow your asphalt! Ensjø has more than 14596 m2 of unussed asphalt areas. What if this was used for something else? Breake up the asphalt Engage the community Create a new identity for Ensjø
WHY
WHAT
Ensjø today is dominated by and associated with industry. Several car shops, huge areas of grey surfaces and parking characterize the area. This makes a car-dominated landscape, not designed for human use.
Ensjø should, and could, be known as the green city instead of car city. To do this the unused grey surfaces will be replaced with nature. The local community and the citizents of Oslo will be engaged by giving the areas different programs and themes. Grow your own asphalt!
Ensjø is changing a lot in the nearest future. There are plans for new apartments and green spaces. Some of these projects are already under construction. We want to prepare the citizens for this change.
HOW
Unused areas needs to be identified and permision to use them needs to be obtained. The success of this project depends on engaging the community and help them create an self sustainable organization. Break the asphalt and introduce green space!
We want to create a new identity for Ensjø. Engage the social community. Generate the feeling of change. A huge number of grey surfaces in Ensjø today are unused spaces. According to our mapping, more than 14596m2 are grey, more or less unused asphalt areas.
Get involved – help Ensjø grow!
What if this could be green?
Giving the areas programs and themes will encourage different people to get involved in the project. This will also help widen the visual impression of Ensjø.

During the winter there will be arranged workshops, for our members and sponsors, led by creative guests or the board. In these workshops participants will meet, brainstorm ideas, discuss and plan the design of the new green spaces The number of programs and the exact themes of them will be a result of the workshops. Some examples: Urban wildlife, Medicinal garden, Urban orchard Urban forest , Playground , Urban garden Ill. 2 Ill.1: Ensjø´s grey unused asphalt surfaces can be filled with greenery, activity and people. Let the community of Ensjø and people of Oslo break up the asphalt and grow their own garden! Ill 2: Ensjø will consist of numerous green areas. Some of them will hae specific programs. This could be a great opportunity to reasearch on topics such as urban agriculture, health effects by transformation of industrial araes etc.

Quick fix #5:
Green City Festivale Even though Løren seems lika a grey island, and the area is dividet by infrastructure on all sides, the place got a lot of potential. Løren is under transformation, going from an industry dominated area to become a residential area. We want to remind the city planners the importance of a green city.
Introduction: Løren has until reasently been an area dominated by industry, offices and Løren Military Camp. When the Military Camp was sold in 1999, the area witned a transformations periode. From being an area mostly dominated by industri, Løren has now become a residential area. It is the Selvaag Group who stands behind most of the development.
After we started working with the site, and started looking at maps and orthophotos, our impression that Løren was a grey island, got even bigger. It shows that Løren is located on one of the greyest residential sites in the entire Oslo-region. Løren is located next to Sinsen, and if you compare the two sites, you will see a huge contrast. Sinsen looks green and livable, Løren looks dead.
None of us had any knowledge about Løren when we first stated on this workshop, and no one knew exactly where it was located. The GPS became handy.
Løren is located only 3.2 kilometers away from Oslo central station, Majorstua is located 2.9 kilometers away from the central station. It is not uncommon to walk the distance from Oslo central station to Majorstua, but mentally it feels way too far to walk to Løren.
We had to cross a narrow bridge over some heavy infrastructure to get there, and when we finally got there, we got the first impression that this was a grey and car dominated place. The place felt like an island with heavy infrastructure on all sides, railroads, metros and highways. The residential area felt isolated from the rest of the city.
Concept: We want to do an awakening project in Løren and we want to make Løren to be more equalized to places like Sinsen and Hasle on people’s mental map. We want to show the people living in Oslo that Løren got a great potential and a great local community. Løren is a place for people to live, and the people need good public places. Grey streets and parking areas in Løren could easily be transformed into more livable places. Our concept should be realized during the transformation period at Løren, and could be seen through already spring/summer 2013.
After talking to some local people we met in the street, we got a more positive impression of the place. They seemed happy and proud of their local community. They had all their primary needs covered, and the Per Gynt Park and Kanonhallen were popular arenas for social activities. However, the Løren area has recently been developed and the impression we got after visiting the place is that the place is lacking a clear identity. The public transportation situation today is not ideal either, but this situation will get better when the new metrostation at Løren opens in 2015 – 2016. Group

participants will contribute. We came up with the concept; “Bring your plant – get a treat” where you trade your container-plant for a treat, for example a soda, a beer or an ice cream. The people are free to place their plant wherever they feel it will help the most for their living environment, and they are free to take their plant back home again after the festival is over. By placing enough container-plants on the ground, Løren will feel green and more livable for the people. Our goal is to take a photograph from above where Løren looks as green as the surrounding areas. Even though it is only for a day, this may inspire the city developers and send out a signal saying; people enjoy green cities.
We want to paint parts of the main street and some side streets green in the darkness of the night, to create a shock effect on the local inhabitants. This is performed as a stunt, and hopefully this will make local inhabitants start think and reflect on their surroundings and living environment. We are presenting an idea of a greener city, but in a passive way. Step 2: Potential and identity – Løren Green City Festival
At the festival there will be concerts by local Oslo bands, barbeques, children’s workshops, lectures and seminars, fun and games et cetera… To make the festival as good as possible and a success, we need to engage the local community, the municipality, local sponsors like the Selvaag Group, and different organizations like Natur & ungdom, Spire and MDG.
By arranging a festival we want to show Lørens potential and strengthen Lørens identity for the local community and for the rest of the city. We would like to close the main street for one day and give it back to the pedestrians. Our idea for the Green City Festival is that the all the

Quick fix 6:
Highlight the Potential Utilizing forgotten and open existing public places, Highlight the Potential aims to showcase the hidden opportunities of public infrastructure of a rapidly developing community by literally highlighting spaces over a one month community event. By doing so, the project reshapes the way people see their everyday surroundings and helps them to envision alternative uses.
WHY Løren today is an area that’s under development. The population that live there is pleased with the place they live. They feel they have everything they need nearby. When we walked around asking questions about the place, and then explained what our task was we got these different comments: “You’ve picked the wrong place” “We already have everything we need” This was not what we thought when we arrived at Løren. We felt we were intruding. Many places we felt we were at a private area thinking we weren’t suppose to be there. We also noticed that there’s a lot of negative signs everywhere telling you “No”, “Don’t walk here”, “Don’t stop here”, and so on. The areas of new development have been completed by the hands of one developer, making it impossible for the community to form their own identity.
son why we chose this street is because it is located near the residences, the shopping area and the workers. There’s also little traffic on the street.
WHAT Walking around in Løren we saw different places where new use could develop. We want to make people aware of the different places with their different potentials.
The Line Path: The Line Path connects from the main street outward into Løren, and the different functions that exist there. The spaces that are created along the Line Path directly relate to the functions along the Main Street, and coordination of color and linetype serves to work together for easy understanding by the user. The Line Path also acts as wayfinding within the site, directing users towards or outward from the Main Street.
HOW The project showcases potential by utilizing three main features: the main street, the line path and the signage. The Main Street: The Main Street acts as meeting space, temporary exhibition space and ideas space for the potential of unused urban spaces. The condensed nature of the elements showcase to the user the vast amount of opportunity sites that exist in seemingly ordinary spaces in their neighborhood. The temporary uses along the Main Street are constantly rotating, and this philosophy extends outward into the spaces along the site.
By selecting a area, a street, we will make people aware of what could be through programming its use. In our main street we will show different uses appearing in different and new places. The street that we have chosen is located in the center of Løren, north of the main road, and will work as an inspiration to think of new uses in different places. The rea-

(through the direction of a curator) will occur over the period of one month. At the same time, the Line Path will be drawn around the site, connecting similar spaces to the Main Street and its corresponding use. During the event, information is collected from the users as to which programs they most enjoyed via on-street surveys and a coordinated website. After one month, the spaces that were created continue to serve as a reminder to their programmed use, and the community is encouraged to continue to share their opinions as to the success of the Main Street. Based off the desires of the residents, the temporary programmed spaces may take on a new form, and help to create a permanent identity to Løren.
to the ability to interact with the space, and triggers the connections between the other elements of the site. We have chosen three categories that will show different types of use that are represented by a color and a positive sign. The three categories are ‘Have Fun’, ‘Take A Break’ and ‘Get Inspired,’ each with a color and corresponding use attached to them. Next summer, the Main Street will open to constant programming of the various spaces along it through an organized event. Activities such as concerts, art walks, community sales, play equipment and so on that involve various existing community groups

Quick fix ( group 7):
Light and sounds - from Løren
. The DIY Oslo Workshop has invited us to think of new ways of improving our city, and given us a site in Løren to work with. The project is temporary, and we decide the length of it.
WHAT
The project will activate a spot in the centre of Løren with light and sound in November and December, in order to draw attention to the space and bring colours and a moment of surprise into the centre of Løren in a dark and grey season. December - not just plan for the green summer months. We also see it as important to use a public, central area for the project.
Løren is situated in Hovinbyen, Oslo. It is currently a transformation area; from industry to housing. Løren is delimited by a railroad track in the south, and the ring road in the north. The area today is characterized by heavy building of new housing.
We have chosen a site near the main road, and at the edge of the commercial centre of Løren. The site appears to be a central space in the centre of Løren, due to its localization. In spite of this there is no program to the site, apart from a restautrant area in summer. It is a square situated between the backsides of three old, wooden buildings, one of them the old hall were the germans made canons, and the main road.
The name Løren derives from Løren farm, and was farmland before 1900. The area transformed into an industrial area from the end of the 1800´s and, and the industry expanded in the 1930´s. During the Second World War (1941) the German Army established a camp here, and also produced canons. Today the industry is moving out, and is being replaced by new housing blocks. There is still some industry left, but they plan to move their business and thus make room for more housing. Within 2012 the real estate company Selvaag is going to build 1600 new dwellings.
We want to bring activity to the site in form of light, colours and sound. The dark of November and December will enhance light in the city and this site. We want the local people to somehow interact with the installation, and give it a sense of surprise and intrigue the curiosity of people.
CONCEPT
The concept is: LIGHT AND SOUND – FROM LØREN
The first things we noticed about Løren was its grey appearance, characterized by hard surfaces and new buildings. This is probably a result of the recent quick development of the area.
HOW The site has three buildings, and three surfaces to project light, in addition to the ground. People coming in to the site have to stand in the middle and

experience the light and sound moving around them. In the middle of the site a ”button box” is placed. When people step onto it, a light and sound sequence is activated, that last for 15 – 20 seconds. When the sequence is over, there is a pause for 1 minute before it can be activated again. With the length of the sequence we want to maintain people´s curiosity, and have several short sequences over long and short ones. The pause has the same effect, and will hopefully keep people from getting tired of the installation. It will also keep it from getting overwhelming.
If less than four people stands on the ”button” one sequence will play. But if more than four people stands here at the same time, two sequences will play, making the experience last longer. This will increase the variation of the sequences, and create a surprising element - it is not obvious.
The theme of the sequences is Lørens history, from Ill.1: the concept
43
Illuminated trees draws attention to the site, and the illuminated button box in the middle creates curiosity.
When people step onto the box, the facades of the buldings are illuminated with a light sequence, accompanied by sound.
WHY With this project we want to create an interest for Løren and its history. Hopefully the local population will learn more about the place they live in. The area is currently under development, and is changing rapidly, the population is therefore growing and changing equally fast. With making the people activate the sequences themselves, we hope to engage the local population and make them interested and curious. The project also takes advantage of the darkest time of the year and enhances the qualities of the dark. Outdoor activity should not be limited to the summer and skiing months of the year. With this we want to encourage people to be outside and see the qualities of the dark. To activate the site is important, and bring something new to a place that has few qualities. The project will also show the potential of the site. Since the site has no program today, there are many possibilities here.

Quick fix 8:
Urban Beach Brighten up a rather hostile and gray enviroment by turning parts of a parking lot into an urban beach where people can socialize, relax and participate in different activities.
WHY
HOW
Today the area around Økern centre looks like one big construction site, and as a pedestrian one feels out of place. Even the spaces around the public buildings are reserved for cars, and there are few, if none, places of quality for people to socialize by the Økern mall. In a more and more “urbanized” world where concrete and tarmac dominates, it’s important to bring focus on the well being of the people. The Urban Beach will be an exciting place because a beach in the middle of the concrete-jungle is unusual and intriguing. Besides, it’s simply fun to be at the beach.
Sand from a local stamp mill will be spread out over half the parking lot to create a zone intended for fun and socializing. A billboard wall will be placed around the area to create a sound barrier between the urban beach and the traffic. By arranging different summer activities and competitions, people will be drawn to the area and be a part of the arrangements (Ill. 1). For the project to be carried out, it depends on volunteer work, “dugnad”. Help will be needed to spread out the sand, arranging activities and keep the place clean. There will be stands offering people something to eat and drink. One can encourage local school bands or students from elementary school to run these stands. In that way the local community will be engaged in the project and it will have a positive effect on those participating. The durability of the project will be from June to the end of August, repeated over a period of five years. This will give time to let the word of the project be spread and attract attention. Also, a shorter period will be less favourable because of the amount of time and work needed to carry the project through. To draw people’s attention and lead them from the metro to the Urban Beach an “Urban Beach” logo can be fronted in different forms at the train pavilion. This can be done by spraying it onto boards or putting out signs or elements that people associate with the beach, like parasols or a surf board. Markings on the ground to point out the direction to the beach can
WHAT The idea is to use part of the parking area by the shopping mall, and turn it into a beach. The beach will be an arena for different arrangements and also an exciting place where people can meet up and socialize. We also want to connect the metro with the Urban Beach and lead people to the site. This can be done by spraying leads on the ground etc. There will be arranged a range of activities that will be open to everyone. Schools from the Oslo area, or just ordinary people, can form teams and compete within different sports and activities.

also be effective (Ill.2, 4). To draw more attention to the beach from a greater distance, a beach ball balloon with helium can be connected to the top of the mall (Ill. 3). Another idea is to place a beach tower on top of the mall, and by night time use lights to make it visible for people passing by.
ACTIVITIES Through the season there will be diffenerent beach related activities, such as beach volley, beach football, bocca, building sand castles etc (Ill. 5). If people form teams, tournaments can be arranged every week, with finals in the weekends. The finals can be combined with theme partys(Ill. 6). In short, the beach will offer activities that are suited for all ages. To make the most out of the urban beach life experience parasoles and beach chairs will be at the audiences disposal.
THE EFFECT The installation will be a big contrast to the hostile and unpleasant environment and scenery we find in the area today. The light colours and soft texture of the beach will make a contrast to the cold and hard concrete and tarmac that dominates the area. It will make different people use the area, and not only for parking – the focus will be on the humans

Lighten up your mind A project involving the local community of Økern, with a goal to trigger the awareness of a particular area, and use it as a center of arts, lights, and enjoyment.
WHY Økern lies in the eastern part of Oslo, and is an area dominated by roads, cars, asphalt and gray areas. However, while walking in this area we found a small section of green space in a backalley between Økern torg and several residential buildings. This area contrasts the dominating gray impression we recieve from the general Økern area, and therefore our goal is to raise peoples awareness of this place and make them see, experience and enjoy it.
local artists may post their works. In order to have their paintings, photos, poems, etc presented, they will have to send the various works to a website we provide. These elements will only be there from the 21th of November to the 21th of January. We chose this timeframe due to the long evening and nights, as the lanterns will be most prominent at this time. There will be an event for the opening of the artsand light-exhibition, in which all the children, their parents and the local community will participate for the lighting and presentation of the art. In addition to these more or less temproary elements we will use lighting to highlight the largest Oak tree placed by Løren school. This tree will be lit up throughout the whole year, so to draw the attention of bypassers, and fuction as a landmark. Ultimatly, the results will make the people of Økern aware of this area, and involve themselves in the annual exhibition. Beyond the providement of lantern screens, canvases and external lighting, this project is run as part of a school program and voluntary commitment of local artist.
WHAT In this project we wanted to involve the local community to create a sense of ownership and commitment to the area we chose to work with. At the northern and southern tips of this area we find two primary schools. As the area we chose includes a pathway connecting these schools, we found that involving the kids studying here in the process would help us reach our goal. In addition, there is a sports field at the northern tip of our area. If we imagine that this sports field represents the body, then the area we chose to work with could represent the mind. Therefore we wish to develop an area where these kids, and bypassers in general can experience something that will invoke different thoughts.
PROJECT AREA
HOW We set up an arena in which the children at the local schools, and artists from the nearby community may post their artworks. The children may, as part of an arts project at their schools, draw pictures used as screens for lanterns. These lanterns will be placed throughout the entire area, hanged from the trees, and strings between them. In addition, we provide larger canvases where both the children and other

People friendly Økern - Økern Winter festival -
Group: Ai Narita, Sajedeh Ahi, Victoria Høiby, Anna Norman Røine
WHY Økern is an urban district in the north-east of Oslo. A metro station, a shopping center, many offices and industries and fast roads form today’s appearance of the central part of this area.
the shopping center was chosen for the temporary proposal. This area was chosen for its central situation, close to the metro station and a junction for most of the pavements. Moreover it is important to make a symbol for Økern center and provide a plaza like activity for people instead of a grey parking area.
When someone gets off the train in Økern station, he finds himself in roads and industries barriers. By a quick tour in the area, every visitor can grasp that this area is designed for cars and their easy accessibility, as cars move on the top and people move underground. The priority of cars and disconnected pavements are two obvious character of Økern urban design which cause difficulty in orientation and make it hard to have a visual image of the area.
HOW How can this place be people friendly, with better pedestrian’s connection and being more like a center for people instead of cars? Alongside the main question, there were concerns like: How does a temporary idea can make a permanent sense of a place? How if the project has been twofold instead of one temporary one?
Beside from the roads, the industries and office buildings make a grey atmosphere. Therefore lack of color and lack of security are other main challenges in økern.
With these main questions team approach was Thinking temporary but at the same time futuristic. Therefore the group came up with a proposal that present a temporary project for Økern in a way that can be used in the future too.
WHAT The main idea is making a people friendly Økern. The most important thing is bringing people to the Økern center with recognizable and significant pedestrian’s paths. The parking area in front of

First, for making a symbol for area in order to be memorized, a tree is placed in one of the parking lots. This tree that can be oak - referring to the history of Ă˜kern and it turns to a sign to show the protest over a grey urban area. People can decorate it and write down their wishes for the future and hang them on the branches. The symbol tree can stay there and gather different activities.
Beside from the idea of a tree, it was needed to make an urban activity for people to communicate and connect. Considering the long and cold winters of Oslo, it was important to think of a winter activity, like a winter festival.

for our cities. Moreover the tree occupies only one parkinglot and the place can be used again as a parking area, although there is an underground parking for the shopping center too.
Our proposal for a temporary activity is an ice-skating arena. It is cheap, easy constructed and a public activity that can last several winter months. It is possible to use snow to make a frame around the skating arena and then the fire department can fill it with water.
Secondly, it was the idea of identifying and connecting pedestrians’ paths. Colored paths connect the center to the near destinations. purple path to the metro station, yellow one to the north and fruit market, red path over the bridge to the

Løren area and green one to the shopping center. All these paths start from the tree and act as one root of the tree that expands to the whole Ă˜kern district. The colors bring brightness to the grey atmosphere and turn to a sign for people. In some parts lights in the form of balls and lamps can be added to the colored path in order to make it safer and more different from the previous look, for example in the bridge and the path in the back part of the shopping center. As there are a lot of
construction works happening in the area, paths can be flexible and be changed according to the construction work. This idea brings more people to the center and makes a clear image of their living area.
