Hey green lovers, How are you? Hope you are doing well and celebrating Pakistan’s victory of winning Asia Cup 2012. As the enthusiasm of victory and joy of festivity is in the air, Identity Magazine decided to launch its 4th issue. In this issue Identity is covering Go Green culture. The cover story is about the young talent of Pakistan who are undoubtedly the sparkling diamonds that are recognized worldwide and have made Pakistan proud.

Everyone knows Green is our National color but many of us don’t know about its usage. To find out more about it, read the feature “Get up green”. Our writers are the main assets of our magazine so find out a little insight about their life in this issue. The resolution for Pakistan was passed in 1940 where Quaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah demanded a separate nation for Muslims to practice their religion and hence, with great sacrifices, we got our independence. But now what are we doing to Pakistan? Read the answer in a thought provoking opinion. At the time of partition not only men but women also participated in the movement. They have done a lot of sacrifice and hard work in getting Pakistan and still women are working shoulder to shoulder with men. So, this time Identity has covered the efforts of women behind the establishment of Pakistan. This issue brings Dua Yusuf, a young talented artist in the limelight who knows to paint her imagination well. As the theme is Go Green, the three-course meal added is green in color for out food section. To increase the fun; photo feature, poetry, games and infotainments pages are also lined up for you. 23rd March is an important event in the history of Pakistan and this time the joy is doubled as we are Asia Cup champions. Pakistanis were never recognized internationally for their intelligence and educational credits but then a Pakistani student performed a feat which nobody did so far in the world. 18 year old Ali Moeen Nawazish from Islamabad got 23 As in A-levels. After this achievement, Nawazish got interviewed and cited by different channels and newspapers including The Telegraph, BBC, Times Online and The Independent.

three major characteristics of vibrancy, idealism and energy, gives us the pillars of our nation known as youth. Just like the land of Pakistan, as much as it is fertile, the same way the youth of this nation is immensely talented. This land has produced diamonds, not only inside of the ground, but also above the land. Those diamonds are our genius young heroes.

There is no inadequacy of talent in Pakistan. Related to the field of information and technology (IT), many youngsters have stepped in and displayed their skills in this field. Here, it is necessary to mention Arfa Karim Randhawa, a girl from Faisalabad who in 2006 at the age of 9 years became one of the youngest Microsoft Certified Professionals (MCPs) in the world. Later she was also honored by the Pakistan Government for the Fatima Jinnah Gold Medal, Salaam Pakistan Youth Award which has been set up by Pakistan’s only Nobel laureate Dr Abdul Salam. Moreover, Arfa has won the Presidential Award for Pride of Performance. Amazingly, she was certified for flying a plane at a flying club in Dubai at the age of 10. She also participated in Microsoft keynote session in the Tech-Ed Developers Conference held in Barcelona. Unfortunately this bright star of ours died at the age of 16 due to cardiac arrest.

Our sparkling heroes have set an example in front of the whole world that Pakistan can never be left behind in the field of science and technology. A young 7th grade kid Rehmat Saeed has invented a touch screen switchboard which can control all the electronic appliances in a home. This young talent has outclassed several engineers elder than him. Having command of computer software as well as on computer hardware, aims to become a successful engineer in the 20 year old boy with a distinctive mind, near future.

Mohmmed Waqar Qureshi has already got three inventions in the field of IT under his belt. Doing bachelors in computer science, Waqar has invented non-touch Interface system, head tracking system and a software which makes it possible to regulate all electric appliances through a computer without making any physical movements. In the same field, we have got one more talented child Baber Iqbal, who is a Microsoft Technical Specialist Developer. The 12 year old kid belongs to Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and started computer programming at the age of 5. Bilal became the world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) at the age of 9. At 11, he obtained the record of being Youngest Microsoft Student Partner (MSP). And with his remarkable intelligence, in his current age of 12, he is the

Microsoft certified technology specialist (MCTS). While discussing about the young talents of our country, you cannot miss a genius creation of our great emerging talent. Pakistan’s first hybrid car was made by the students of NUST University which is also the only car of its own kind in the continent of Asia. In 2010, the students took this car to Malaysia where it cleared all of the qualifying rounds winning the Shell Eco Marathon. This car is capable of running 35 km per hour. Currently its capability is to run 110 km per liter. Using the mixture of electrical and mechanical energies, this car is efficient enough to travel a long distance using the minimum quantity of petrol. Emerging from the remote area of Pakistan, an engineer Dilfaraz invented a small drone plane.

People expect that some external force can only rescue the territory suffering with violence but our young talent has proven that as long as they exist, we don’t need any external support. A 13 year old Malala Yousufzai from Mingora, Swat valley got nominated for the International Children Peace Award in 2011 by the international foundation named Kids Rights which is working on human rights of children. The situation of swat valley was very critical during the year 2009. In spite of this terrible condition of the valley, Malala did not stop but stepped forward to save her hometown. She wrote a letter to the BBC with her fake name “WalMakai”. Later, she even wrote a blog which expressed the true condition of the valley and spoke against the Taliban. Moin Khan, a 25 year old on a mission to improve the perception of Pakistan, started his journey from San Francisco to Lahore on a Honda sports bike. He has travelled 40,000 kilometers, visited around 20 countries and arrived in Lahore at 31st 2011.

Drifting into the world of music, let's not ignore the young talented Pakistani student of Harvard University, who grabbed the first award in the musical competition. Amin Toofani brought up great excitement when he played magical music with his guitar, mesmerizing the audience and the judges. The immense talent and the hypnotizing tunes bound the judges to award him as number one. Talking about the young musical talent of Pakistan, skipping Rouhan Abbas would be very unfair. The 14 year old got selected for the singing competition program Chhotay Ustad. He got a lot of appreciation by the judges. With his immense singing talent he drew his way till the grand finale. Representing Pakistan, he was awarded as a winner of the competition. With a prolific, dynamic, versatile and exciting dancing style Suleiman Mirza, a BritishPakistani earned the “Michael Jackson Dancing Machine” nickname. He auditioned in Britain's Got Talent and won the runners-up title in the finals.

Later he has been recognized as the world’s number one Michael Jackson dance tribute artist by Michael Jackson himself. He has performed on The Oprah Winfrey Show and with superstars like Chris Brown, Beyonce Knowles etc. Hence now knowing about these young talents which persist in our country, who are a part of our nation, we can proudly say that we are a Pakistani, the same Pakistani who has been rewarded in that show or in that field. Competing with other countries in the world, we are not weak because, a nation who has young talents, will remain unbeatable But despite of all these prize winning qualities and abilities, we are unlucky in a way that these young talents are neglected by our government. Even after media coverage, still they could not get the attention of our government, nor did they get any private financial support. Now it’s the time that our government should realizes these existing gems and helps them in reaching the ladder of success.

GET UP GREEN! Have you ever thought why it is usually said that life is full of colors? Not just because colors signify some natural meanings, but they mean a lot to us as well. They speak for you when you are out of words, to express yourself, and paving a way for the other person to understand your heart’s secret. Selection of colors varies from time to time but when it comes to showing the true united spirit, all countries have their natural colors which exemplify their culture and civilization. In that case, we choose only one color which not only unites us but identifies us as a nation of Pakistan also. That color undoubtedly is Green, “Green is the prime color of the world and that from which its loveliness arises” Pedro Calderon de la Barca Green is mostly considered to be restful color of all around the world. It symbolizes nature, health, fresh environment, good luck and harmony. Also being associated with Islam for centuries, it is believed that our Last Prophet’s favorite color was green and it was used by Prophet Mohammed’s tribe on their flags.

The color green has a special place in Islam. It is used in the decoration of mosques, the bindings of Quran and the silken covers for graves of Sufi saints. According to Quran, it is said that the inhabitants of paradise will wear green garments of fine silk. Being the national color of Pakistan it is perceived primarily that the blend of green and white, in our flag, is a sign of peace and affluence. By making composition of both effects, the green color indicates generosity, goodwill and prosperity of Pakistan. A traditional color of peace, Pakistani army wears olive green giving out the message to protect us from any harm and keep peace. Travelling abroad, our green passport is a heaven to some eight million Pakistanis who have families back home and this passport keeps alive their desire to keep in touch with their families. It shows our oneness and integrity as we step in into any foreign country. Pakistan is embellished with minerals, hills, greenery and association of bright green suits here very well. We have Mingora emerald mine in Swat valley having the most radiant green emerald that can possible be imagined.

Athletes and sportsperson wear dark green to represent Pakistan. British-Pakistani boxer, Amir Khan wore green robe with all green shorts and snickers representing the Pakistani flag and nation which showed his strong feelings towards his homeland. Even in sports like cricket, the audiences tend to color their faces with green paint and wear green to support and cheer up Pakistani team. Not only at some special spots, green is observed in all our local grounds also. A symbol of heaviness, prestige and ambition, dark green color is mostly preferred for money and finance purposes. Our entire local institutions from very old to new ones put green in their logos and institution name like in National Bank of Pakistan, Habib Bank, Muslim Commercial Bank, Pakistan Telecommunication Limited (PTCL), Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), and National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). Green, as opposed to red means safety. It is the color of free passage in road traffic. The introduction of a fleet of Green buses and rickshaws in Karachi, running on CNG is clearly a step in the right direction. In products, whether they are local or foreign-made, we do observe green color which is valued highly in foreign countries also. Talking about local products, Saeed Ghaniâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s herbal beauty product company, Milk Pack, Pakola drink, Pakistan State Oil, and Millac Yogurt use green in their logos. Go Green Pakistan is a cyberspace movement, started on 23 July, 2009 for the Independence Day celebrations by Farhan Masood. The movement was started when Farhan offered others to send him photos to be turned green. It took place at Twitter and Facebook, and turned green more than 10,000 social media profiles for the celebrations of Pakistan's Independence Day. People even use the term green in naming their industry or organization which motivate others to join them and is easy to recognize that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surely our national organization. Green Cross Pakistan is such biggest tanning organization which aims to protect lives from natural disasters and acknowledge people about environment degradation. Green, as symbol of faith, freedom, ambition and nature, truly and accurately describes us. As a nation of green, we should get united under our green flag and be proud of having virtue of a green nation.

Jinnah, drove the whole nation into our destined paths and clearly mentioned that only getting Pakistan as a free homeland for the Muslims is not the end task in itself. There is much to be done to further build the state which was based on the true struggle and an extremely stable reason; separate home for a separate nation. This thought was set before the world on 23 rd March 1940 at the beautiful space of Minto Park in Lahore. Quaid-e-Azam who was heading the session demanded a separate homeland for the Muslims and inaugurated a very important era in political and constitutional history of the sub continent. This resolution was actually the first official event in which a demand was registered by the Muslim leaders for a free separate state. These were his views which are as clear as crystal that Pakistan is a dignified state with independent nation with an identification on the basis of being a Muslim having different belief, culture and norms of their own. Imagine the time when all we had was faith and strong courage but not the surety of getting our demands fulfilled. But despite of all the hurdles put before by the enemy, hopes were as high as stars, the emotions were as pure as diamonds and struggle kept going on day and night. They were our ancestors and we are the generation for whom they laid down their lives knowing the fact that they would not be able to see the dawn of freedom but their children will and with this belief, they called us the future builders of Pakistan.

Let us stop for a while and ask ourselves, what are we doing to Pakistan? Probably the common answers will be allowing outsiders to attack our sovereignty, killing our own people, letting events affect our country economically and morally. Wake up people! We have got everything which makes a powerful and an independent state to stand as a developed country on the globe. This was in fact a firm belief of our leaders in past and it should be our faith as well because we are the one who enjoyed the fruit of their sacrifices but still all we do is complain, forgetting the fact that we are the cause behind that complain. If we all can stand together as a united nation to support our team to win a cricket match, then no doubt we can combine our heads to address other endless issues of our country. Are we not forgetting events like 1965 war, earth quake of 2005 and 2008, flood of 2011 when the whole nation was standing as one force to make our victims feel that they are not alone in this moment? Therefore, the only lack which abides us to feel the true spirit towards our country is the factor of realization. Founder of nation said very encouraging words which we, if go through thoroughly, can solve the problems then and there. He said, “The vital contest in which we are engaged is not only for material gain but also for the very existence of the soul of the Muslim nation. If we lose in the struggle all is lost. Let our motto be, as the Dutch proverb says: Money is lost nothing is lost Courage is lost much is lost Honor is lost most is lost Soul is lost all is lost”

It was not just a vision of man; in fact there were so many great women behind this success whom today, are considered the role models for us. Quaid-i-Azam Mohmmed Ali Jinnah always guided and encouraged Muslim women and praised them on excellent performance for organizing, creating unity and socio-political services for Muslims. Although there were innumerable women involved, Begum Rana Liaquat Ali khan, Fatima Ali Jinnah, Bi Ama, Lady Nusrat Haroon, Begum Jahan Ara, and Begum Shaista Ikramullah were just among the few who have exhibited tremendous intellectual efforts for the reforms and betterment of society. Looking back in the history, we may clearly observe that most women contributors were less educated, had never participated in such a great number in any political movement and observed strict purdah as well but yet, they worked shoulder to shoulder with men. Encouraging their sons, husbands and brothers,

they fervently organized public meetings especially for women and addressed them as well. They also took part in menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meetings, met with the wives of British officers and stated them their vision, conducted different educational classes at their homes for young Muslims girls to give them enough awareness which will help in bringing up a revolution. The use of severe Lathi charge, shelling, lashing and tear gas never demined the spirit of these women. Those women were not political climbers, but they brought up their children in such manner that they were going to be upcoming leaders for their homeland. A very famous name in this regard is of Bi Ama. With her sons Maulana Shaukat Ali Johar and Maulana Mohmmed Ali Johar in jail, Bi Ama had taken up the struggle against British imperialism by addressing meetings and traveled to various parts of India for gathering support. Following her steps, Begum Mohmmed Ali Johar wrote for press and got the honor of being the first woman to attend a menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meeting. Ms. Fatima Ali Jinnah, the mother of nation did splendid work during

Pakistan movement. Even as a sister of Quaid-e-Azam Mohmmed Ali Jinnah, she worked with him, step by step and encouraged him to keep the struggle going. Along with her, Begum Rana Liaquat Ali Khan, Begum Haroon and Lady Nusrat Haroon are prominent figures who never asked for pardon and remain devoted to their cause.

These women feel their responsibility of bringing up a new generation and building societies in a well-mannered way. The list of women is quite large who have, very significantly, elevated the status and grandeur of women by virtue of their devoted efforts and activism in different walks of life while grabbing immense fame for their contributions. Bilquis Edhi is a humanitarian and a social worker. Along with her husband Abdul Sattar Edhi, she has been working with the Edhi Foundation since the early 60â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s with the mission to provide

aid to Pakistan's poor and suffering. Musarrat Misbah, Presidential Award holder for Pride of Performance is a woman who brought hope and inspired many around the world to contribute to her foundation, Depilex Smile Again Foundation which was set up to help women disfigured by acid burns. It helps finding them a new life and pay for expensive reconstructive surgery. While talking about politics, the name of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto must be highlighted. She is the first woman Prime Minister of a Muslim state, who has laid her life for the country and became example for a number of girls who wants to work for the nation.

Pakistan has been blessed with fair share of talented artists in many different fields. Talking about arts, with the likes of Bano Qudsia, Fatima Surraiya Bajiya, and Umera Ahmed, we have among us, the most respected and recognized around the world. Salima Hashmi is one of the most well-known artists of Pakistan. Besides being an accomplished painter, she received Pakistan's Pride of Performance award. Today she is the Dean of School of Visual Arts at Beaconhouse National University in Lahore and also runs her own art gallery featuring works of young artists. In addition to being one of Pakistan's most respected architects and an advocate for preservation of historical sites, Yasmeen Lari has the distinction of being Pakistanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first woman architect. After retiring from a career in architecture, she is devoting her time to writing and serving as an advisor to UNESCO project. She is also the executive director of Heritage Foundation and the Chairperson of Karavan Initiatives. Mehreen Jabbar is a filmmaker who, at a young age, appeared in many film festivals around the world including The Hong Kong International Film

Festival, The San Francisco AsianAmerican Film Festival, and The Leeds Film Festival. At home, her unconventional style of storytelling has earned her much acclaim like Ramchand Pakistani and various Pakistani drama serials. In the similar field, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy recently brought home the Oscar that every Pakistani was immensely proud of for her film, Saving Face. Government of Pakistan intends to give her the Hilal-e-Imtiaz as well. Another star with the name of Naseem Hameed turned out to be a queen of the athletic track in Dhaka where she emerged as the fastest woman of South Asia by clocking 11.81 seconds in the 100m sprint of the South Asian Games (SAG). She became the first Pakistani woman athlete to achieve a 100m gold in the 26 year long history of the (SAG). Kiran Khan is an Olympian Swimmer and national record-holder from Pakistan. A powerful medley swimmer, she was the first ever female swimmer to grab a gold medal in 3rd and 4th World Islamic Games and 1st South Asian Swimming Championship 2007. She was awarded the Fatima Jinnah Award 2007 by the Pakistani Government. Women of Pakistan are emerging as politicians, social workers, lawyers, doctors, journalists, artists, pilots, and vice versa. It must be admitted and applauded that these courageous women have not only created awareness among the fellow women but have also initiated the platforms where their demands could meet success.

Eating green! By Tehmina Asim Ingredients: Garlic cloves: 2 (chopped) Onion: 2 tbsp Ginger: 1 (peeled and chopped) Broccoli: 4 cups (chopped) Spinach: 1/2 pound Parsnips: 3 (peeled and chopped) Ribs of celery: 2 (chopped) Parsley: as required Fresh water: as required

Method: Over medium heat, add olive oil and stir in garlic, onion, ginger. Add broccoli, spinach, parsnips, celery, parsley and stir until the spinach wilts and collapses. Add just enough water to cover the vegetables. Reduce the heat and cover the pot. Cook for fifteen minutes or so until the veggies are softened. Puree the soup with blender. Serve it with hot cooked rice.

Ingredients: Chicken: 2 kg chicken (cut) Yogurt: 1/2 kg Hara Dhania: 1 cup

Method: Mix grinded hara dhania and green chilies in yogurt. Add salted chicken to heated oil stirring for three minutes. Add ginger-garlic paste and turmeric. Let the chicken get tender on medium heat. Add yogurt mixture to the chicken and cook over medium heat .As gravy thickens, mix with black pepper and take it off the heat. Serve hot with roti.

Green chilies: 8 Ginger-Garlic paste: 2 tbsp Black pepper: 1 tbsp (grounded) Turmeric: 1/2 tbsp

Coriander: 1/2 cup Green peas: 1/2 cup (boiled) Cheese: 1/2 cup (grated) Ginger: 1 inch Garlic: 6-7 cloves Green Chilies: 3-4 Lemon juice: 1 tsp Garam Masala: 1/2 tsp Bread crumbs: 1/2 cup Sooji: 3tbsp

Method: Make a fine paste of grinded spinach, coriander, ginger, garlic and green chilies. Mash boiled potatoes, green peas and add grinded paste, cheese, salt, lemon juice and bread crumbs to it. Make balls with it and dip into sooji. Deep fry the balls. Serve with tomato sauce.

Lauki/ bottle gourd: 300 gm (grated) Khoya: 250 gm Sugar: as required

Method:

Almonds: 50 gm (chopped)

Drain lauki (Bottle gourd) after boiling it for two minutes. Add lauki and sugar to heated ghee. Cook till sugar crystals completely dissolve and both ingredients are well mixed. Add khoya and cook for another two minutes. Add almonds and pistachios when it starts leaving oil. Garnish with chopped nuts.

And their son made them proud. Right as he said, soldiers were saluting Hammad Khan for the bravery of his son. Everyone was standing in the memorial of their beloved Fahad with tears rolling down their cheeks.

“One day I will make you proud and your wish of getting saluted will come true!” Fahad uttered to his parents minutes before his flight to abroad at Pakistan International Airport. In university hostel with his best friend “Haniya, I was thinking to do something for Pakistan. You know… something big!” “Can’t you see how corrupt this country has become? Sorry but you can’t do anything big here,” Haniya replied in disappointment. “Oh! So you also have this typical Pakistani thinking of just sitting, watching and wishing things to turn perfectly alright!” Fahad said in harsh tone. “Whatever!” Haniya stood and walked out of the room. After class “I need to go to my room. I have something important to do online,” Fahad said in cafeteria “What sort of important work are you doing these days? You are acting quite reserved. Is everything okay? Like…” Haniya asked curiously.

“Yes, ummm…everything is okay. Let’s order something,” Fahad hesitantly cut off Haniya’s conversation. “Umm… let’s go somewhere out. I am in a mood for walk,” Haniya suggested. In the park “Just one month left for our graduation completion…sigh...Sometimes life is difficult to handle. You want to do many things but you are stuck in deciding what to do first,” Haniya said. “Yes! I am excited for this one month. By the way, has something happened with you? Want to share?” Fahad asked. “I don’t know…I guess I am learning how to love or care for someone special,” Haniya replied “Oh! So you are all philosophical today. My Haniya is good when she is in happy mood,” Fahad complimented. “You are my best friend...Right?” “Yes! …do you have any doubt?” Fahad smirked.

Why are you being so cheesy?” Fahad asked irritated. “I am getting some weird feeling,” Haniya elaborated. “Can you please stop beating about the bush?” Fahad said. “I went to your room after noticing your disturbed attitude that day and investigated what you were doing online. I also know about your plans after reaching Pakistan. I just don’t understand that why are you hiding this from me,” Haniya said with teary eyes. “Yes I will be going on borders next week.
