Welcome Home ... he Executive Board and the Board of Directors will take charge of a membership that will challenge the leadership to move the Chamber into new markets and toward methods of expanding opportunities for business development. The leaders of the Chamber will view the future of marketing the business community, and will study ways to offer newer and better venues for product and service to the GROWING consumer base and the options it will demand. Early this year, the Board and the Chamber membership will welcome a new leader to serve at the helm of the Chamber of Commerce. With his retirement after 31 years, Ken Kindley leaves a legacy of success and growth of the Chamber that is now poised for an ever-expanding future. The new Chamber leader will have a solid foundation on which to GROW the business development culture that will support Lincoln County as it continues developing into one of the fastest-developing areas in North Carolina. The most exciting changes in this new era will be seen in the membership itself. The era’s bright future will see changes that are brought on by a rush of new businesses, the growth of existing businesses, an ever-expanding industrial base of new companies and the onslaught of new jobs. These changes will add new people to the current population, all of whom will create demand for better housing, better schools, more consumer services, and more retail and social fulfillment. In short, Lincolnton, Denver, West Lincoln and all of Lincoln County will be in a state of GROWTH. GROW Magazine will be the Chamber’s herald of change and harbinger of the dynamic developments that will document Lincoln County’s progression into the forefront of the GROWing region.

Chair of the Board 2018

I’m excited for 2018, and the vision that the Chamber and our members have for Lincoln County. With a new Chamber president and the future updates of the Chamber building, I believe we will see continued growth in our community. We encourage everyone to stop by the Chamber to see the updates and changes we have made to the building.

Lincolnton is my hometown and a great place to be. I appreciate our goals for the business community and the friendly atmosphere that members bring to the Chamber. I, as many others, do look forward to seeing the Chamber and small business owners grow, and I encourage them to bring their style, commitment and growth to our community.

Please feel free to contact the Chamber and ask us how you, too, can be involved with our committees. Eddie Sigmon Chair of the Board 2018 Photo by Melany Dawn Crouse Photography

Abernethy Chrysler Jeep Dodge and Ram has been family-owned and operated since 1958. We provide dozens of jobs for our local community. We are involved in several local charities; two of our favorites are Toys for Tots and Relay for Life. Everybody here at the dealership donates throughout the year so we can buy bicycles to donate to Toys for Tots. In addition, we sell bottled water, and 100 percent of the proceeds goes to Relay for Life. We all love giving back to our community that’s given us so much in return.

At Heart of a Hero Day, held in February 2017, 120 emergency workers received complimentary health screenings, which included checking their vital signs, measuring their height and weight, and conducting an electrocardiogram. If anything seemed abnormal, the emergency workers were given an echocardiogram and a follow-up appointment. Forty Carolinas HealthCare System employees volunteered on Heart of a Hero Day to help the emergency responders.Volunteers included medical assistants, nurses and doctors from the Carolinas HealthCare System Lincoln emergency department and Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute-Lincolnton. Joshua Warren was born to be a firefighter. “It was his passion,” says his wife, Kimberly. “He loved to help others.” Kimberly says he became a junior firefighter as a teenager and never looked back. He was a part-time firefighter with the East Lincoln, Lucia-Riverbend and Alexis fire departments at the time of his death.

A Charitable Heart --- The Spirit of Lincoln County

Hallmarks Of Faith Spirit of Unity, Service Pervades Houses of Worship

incoln County’s houses of worship are steeped in cooperation. Take Daniels Evangelical Lutheran Church, for example. According to the book “Welcome Home, Lincoln, North Carolina,” German Reformed and Lutheran congregations founded a union church in western Lincoln County around 1767. The building served both congregations until the late 1800s. On Easter Sunday, April 16, 1865, Lincoln County residents put aside differences of denomination and gathered at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church for an ecumenical sunrise service. A week earlier, Gen. Robert E. Lee had surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the Civil War. Two days earlier, President Lincoln had been assassinated, “intensifying demands for revenge across the North,” according to the St. Luke’s Historical Brochure. “The Easter worshipers knew that the next morning Union forces would enter Lincoln County and establish a military occupation.” The Rev. William Robards Wetmore organized the sunrise service, “which boosted the morale of the citizens and readied them emotionally for whatever the next day might bring.” And in the late 1700s, Lutheran and German Reformed residents 38 Grow Lincoln County, NC

formed Emmanuel Lutheran. Baptists, Episcopalians, Methodists and Presbyterian used the Lutherans’ church, known as the “Dutch Meeting House,” until it burned down in 1893. Today, with a city/county population of 81,000-plus, it’s not surprising that this area’s faith community is an amalgam of practices and traditions. Lincoln County’s 164 houses of worship represent the following religions: • African Methodist Episcopal • Assembly of God • Baptist • Catholic • Charismatic • Christian • Church of Christ • Church of God • Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints • Episcopal • Gospel • Interdenominational • Jehovah’s Witnesses • Lutheran • Methodist • Nondenominational • Pentecostal • Presbyterian • Seventh-day Adventist Church • Wesleyan

A Spiritual Take on Community Service People of different faiths come together for worthy causes throughout the county. Their volunteer efforts reflect a commitment to elevate the lives of all residents. Following are six examples of residents’ religion-based outreach. • Covenant Bible Church provides volunteers for a community food pantry, soup kitchen, Meals on Wheels and other activities. Its members also volunteer as counselors and office workers at Crisis Pregnancy Center (www.covenantbible. org/ministries/missions-outreach/ outreach-opportunities). The ministries’ new director, Mitzi Williams, assumed her post in mid-2017. • East Lincoln Christian Ministry provides money to clients who need financial assistance; food and personalhygiene items through its pantry; meals for those who are home bound; and sells donated clothing, furniture, appliances, and toys to fund its philanthropic activities. Reenactment of the Revolutionary War Battle of Ramsour’s Mill.

ust a few years after the American Revolution, the North Carolina legislature divided Tryon County into two counties. In 1779, Lincoln County was derived from Tryon, and six years later Lincolnton, the county seat, was founded. The county was named in honor of Gen. Benjamin Lincoln of Massachusetts – not Abraham Lincoln, as many have thought. Benjamin Lincoln fought in the American Revolutionary war. Starting in the mid-18th century, settlers (mostly German and Scotch-Irish) from Pennsylvania, Maryland, South Carolina and Virginia arrived in Lincoln County. Thanks to the influx of immigrants, the county flourished and became one of the most populous in the state. Warriors on the Battlefield One of the most famous military battles in the state – The Battle of Ramsour’s Mill – took place in Lincolnton on June 20, 1780 during the British campaign to gain control of the southern colonies in the American Revolutionary War. Two days earlier, Patriot Gen. Griffith Rutherford, who was camped near Charlotte, had learned that a large force of Loyalists was assembling at Ramsour’s Mill. Rutherford began moving his troops in that direction, and on June 19 he sent orders to Lt. Col. Francis Locke and other local militia leaders to call up their militia. By the time Rutherford reached the battlefield, the Patriots had defeated the Loyalists, who surrendered to him. During the Battle of Cowans Ford, (N.C. 73 at the Cowans Ford Dam overlook) on Feb. 1, 1781, Patriots from Lincoln and surrounding counties delayed the crossing of the Catawba River by Cornwallis and the British army. This provided Gen. Nathanael Greene and his American army time to escape and to plan the retreat across North Carolina that ended six weeks later at the courthouse in Guilford County. Dominant Industries Emerge In 1815, the first cotton mill in the South, the Schenck-Warlick Mill, was constructed near Lincolnton. Schenck-

Warlick later became Laboratory Mill. Originating in 1819 as a cotton mill, it later became a site where medicines were manufactured for Confederate troops during the Civil War. A larger plant named Lincoln Cotton Mills, built after the first one was destroyed by a flood, operated until the Civil War. Eureka Manufacturing Co. Cotton Mill in Lincolnton, also known as Tait Yarn Co. and Lincoln Bonded Warehouse Co., was built between 1907 and 1910, and is a two-story, brick factory building with a three-story stair tower. The factory and another building housed Eureka Manufacturing from 1906 to 1937, and Tait Yarn from 1949 to 1966. Lincoln Bonded Warehouse occupied the buildings into the late 1990s. These and other mills contributed to the area’s thriving textile industry. Between the late 18th and 19th centuries, Lincoln County became a hot bed of iron-ore production, thanks to an abundance of iron ore, hardwood forests and limestone. The industry led to the creation of several furnaces that generated numerous jobs. Vesuvius Furnace was established by Gen. Joseph Graham, one of the chief leaders in the 18th- and early 19-century production of iron in Lincoln County. Located between Denver and Iron Station, construction of the furnace and a house began around 1792. The home, which still stands, is the oldest residence in the county. Places to Worship and More In addition to historic homes, farms and schools, numerous churches, cemeteries and church camps were established in Lincoln County. Machpelah Cemetery was established in 1801 as a family graveyard. In 1848, Machpelah Presbyterian Church was built

Magnolia Grove in Iron Station. next to the cemetery. The first pastor of the church was Robert Hall Morrison, the first president of Davidson College and fatherin-law of Confederate Gen. T.J. “Stonewall” Jackson. Graham and Morrison are buried in the cemetery. The Greek Revival Church contains pews and a slave gallery that are thought to be original. Brevard Chapel United Methodist Church in Denver, built in the 1870s, was and still is home to a largely AfricanAmerican congregation. The first meeting at the Rock Springs Campground near Denver – the oldest continuous camp meeting in the U.S. – took place in 1830. Rock Spring Camp Meeting traces its roots back to 1794 when a camp meeting was held in the woods for several days and nights at the site of the Rehobeth Methodist Church. A Methodist minister named Daniel Asbury from Virginia is credited with starting the camp meeting tradition here. The site consists of a large arbor, where all events took place, surrounded by wooden structures with tin roofs called “tents.” The annual Tucker’s Grove Camp Meeting is held in August at the camp meeting ground near Iron Station. Started in 1876, it is one of the oldest existing African-American camp meetings in the South. Guardian of History The Lincoln County Historical Association, launched in the 1950s, later joined other community groups Grow Lincoln County, NC 41

to preserve the former First Baptist Church. Their efforts led to the creation of The Lincoln Cultural Center, which opened in 1991. The Classical Revival building in Lincolnton is home to the Arts Council of Lincoln County, Lincoln County Historical Association, Lincoln Community Concert Association, Lincoln Theatre Guild and the Jacob Forney Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MODULAR HOMES AND STICK-BUILT HOMES? Modular homes are built to the same building codes as stick-built homes. Modules are built in a factory, then delivered and put together onsite on the foundation. Essentially, modular is just a different construction technique. Modular homes have approximately 20% more lumber and often have higher insulation values than stick-built homes. Modular homes appreciate in value, and are financed and insured the same as a stick-built home. Lastly, modular homes are a better value and are completed in less time than a comparable stick-built home.

More Places Of Historic Significance Lincoln County has 31 sites and districts on the National Register of Historic Places (www.nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com/nc/ lincoln/state.html). Nearly all of the buildings are privately owned. Aside from the Lincoln Cultural Center, Rock Springs Camp Meeting Ground, Tucker’s Grove Camp Meeting Ground and Vesuvius Furnace, other registered historic locations include: • Built around 1841, The Caldwell-Cobb-Love House in Lincolnton was a transitional Federal/ Greek Revival dwelling. Remodeled twice, the two-story dwelling features three cross gable ells, wall dormers, inset porch and balconies. It has a three-story rear wing. A grandson of William Sharpe, a member of the Continental Congress, built the house. • William A. Graham Jr. Farm is actually a home and farm near Denver. The two-story farmhouse was built circa 1890. Also on the property is a two-story, 16-side “round barn,” log outbuilding and smokehouse. A working experimental farmstead, the property belonged to William A. Graham Jr., son of Gov. William Alexander Graham. • Magnolia Grove, in Iron Station, was built in 1824 at the location of Lincoln County’s first courthouse and jail, which dates back to 1784. The name comes from the rare (for the area) long-leaf magnolias. • Pleasant Retreat Academy, constructed from 1817 to 1820, is one of the last antebellum buildings, and one of the few male academies, in the state. Texas Gov. James Henderson, North Carolina Gov. William A. Graham and Georgia Gov. Hoke Smith along with two major generals, Robert Hoke and Stephen Ramsour, were all students at the academy. It later housed a private residence, a private school and the county library. • A Federal-style structure, Shadow Lawn in Lincolnton was constructed of 250,000 handmade bricks. It was built in 1826. • Woodside, also known as the James Pinckney Henderson House, is a historic plantation house near Lincolnton. It was built circa 1795 by Lawson Henderson and is believed to be the birthplace of his son, Texas political leader James Pinckney Henderson. A giant “shoe house” graces the home’s front yard.

eople desperately search the state for places like Lincoln County, where schools are not overcrowded, work commutes are not nightmarish endeavors and home prices don’t make them cringe. Lincoln County – where there’s ample room to live, work and play – is home to three distinct geographic areas: Denver, Lincolnton and West Lincoln. Denver is the area in the midst of major development and expansion. The county’s municipal hub, Lincolnton, is where many major cultural events take place. Lincolnton is also the transitional area connecting East and West Lincoln. And West Lincoln, which is predominantly agrarian, is the largest producer of locally grown food and flowers. So there’s something to appeal to everyone in every part of the county. In addition to food and drink, festivalgoers can peruse artists’ wares and enjoy the talents of bands and street performers. Organizers expect 10,000 people to turn out for this year’s downtown fest. Each year, downtown Lincolnton hosts the Alive After Five Concert Series (www.facebook.com/ lincolntonaliveafterfive). This year’s free shows are scheduled for the last Thursday in May, June, July and August. Mark your calendar: The Lincoln County Apple Festival takes place the third Saturday in September. This is an annual event you don’t want to miss. Organizers say the festival brings more than 80,000 visitors to downtown Lincolnton. It might be hard for organizers to top

last year’s event. Entertainers took to three stages where they danced, showed off their karate moves, tumbled, and played music and sang. Forty-eight food vendors served just about anything you could ask for: barbecue, burgers, hot dogs, tamales, corn on the cob and – of course – apples baked into pies and drenched in caramel, just to name a few. And five local apple growers, such as Burton Farms and Grocery in Lincolnton, were onsite with their produce. The annual “Battle of the Apple Dishes” contest drew a slate of serious contenders vying for cash prizes and bragging rights. Regional crafts were on display and for sale. Handcrafted jewelry, lawn ornaments, pottery, soaps and wreaths were among the items that attracted browsers and buyers. The festival even had its own farmer’s market, showcasing Lincoln County growers’ plants, produce and other goodies. “Destination Innovation,” an exhibit focusing on Lincoln County industry,

technology, training and jobs, made its debut at the festival in 2017. As always, there were activities for the younger set: a scavenger hunt and the Kids Orchard, where they could participate in story time, get their faces painted and play putt-putt, among other things. The Rescue Squad Park is home to Denver Days (http:// denverlakenormanrotary.com/denverdays), a community festival featuring entertainment, food and fair rides. The Rotary Club of Denver/Lake Norman hosts the event, which is usually held in September over a three-day period. For 17 years, the annual Denver Fireworks show celebrating Independence Day has been a staple for those seeking family-friendly entertainment. It’s turned into more of a festival, with activities such as games and rock climbing for kids and displays by vendors. Music has become a big draw at the event, held at East Lincoln High School’s football stadium. Last year, country

music chart-topper Collin Raye was the headliner. Kelby Costner, a former resident of Lincolnton, national guitar champion Ben Cockman and Bruce Hedrick rounded out the lineup. Lovers of motorcycles and barbecue turn out in droves for Hog Happenin’ (www.hoghappenin.org), a regional bike fest and Kansas City Barbeque Society-Sanctioned North Carolina State Championship Barbeque Cook-Off.This year, the fun kicks off on June 2, in downtown Lincolnton – as always – where bikers and barbecue enthusiasts will gather to buy goods from vendors, enjoy a bike show, and listen to bands. Rockers Quiet Riot, last year’s headliners, were a crowd favorite. People in Lincoln County love parades. In Lincolnton, the one marking July 4 includes fireworks. A tree-lighting ceremony follows this year’s Christmas parade on Nov. 25. Both events are huge crowd favorites. There are also Christmas parades in Denver and Cat Square in Vale. You might think the latter is a small-town, run-of-the-mill

event. But in Cat Square, that’s certainly not the case. Over the years, the pre-parade gathering has come to resemble a football tailgate party. People come equipped with folding chairs and portable grills. Closer to the parade route, they fill driveways and the shoulders of the road. As for the parade itself, you might see floats of a different kind: from a fullsize wooden automobile on a trailer – transporting St. Nick, of course – to dune buggy-type vehicles that climb each other. Lots of tractors and horses are also part of the procession. And if your little ones didn’t collect enough candy during Halloween, they can make up for it at this parade. Those participating in the event – including the Christmas Queen – toss an abundance of goodies into the crowd. Activities to observe or indulge in range from Pee Wee and Midget flag football for the kids to badminton play and a walking program for adults. Lincolnton’s newest outdoor facility, First Federal Park, opened in September 2017. It features green space, bathrooms and an area for musical performances and small events. The park sits along the South Fork Rail Trail, a greenway that’s part of the Carolina Thread Trail. But its most popular feature is probably its splash pad, which reopens this year on May 1.
