Makes you wonder just how smart they really are and what they’re thinking. I believe that dogs think mostly about food and sex, not too far afield of humans. They really do have an easy lifestyle; they lay around most of the day, the food arrives on regular schedule, and humans take them for nice walks around the neighborhood. We really don’t ask or expect anything from them except the wagging tails, loving stares expecting a treat, and those eyes watching everywhere we go in the house. They say a dog is man’s best friend; we can enlarge that saying to include women who clean up after the pooches and buy the dog food at the supermarkets. Pet food and supplies are a billion dollar industry in the United States. Many years ago I was an exchange journalist in the old U.S.S.R. and the Soviets had no dogs anywhere. I asked one of our Communist escorts one day on a bus trip in Moscow, “Why don’t you have any dogs?” Alexander simply replied, “We don’t need them.”

Gemstones & Minerals

Padparadscha, the orange-pink sapphire

S

apphire is a variety of corundum and comes in many colors especially blue. The beautiful orangepink variety is called padparadscha. With the exception of red corundum, which is ruby, all other colors of corundum are sapphires. The padparadscha sapphire owes its color to the additional trace elements of chromium and iron in its formation, and ranges in hue from pale orange to a vivid reddish-orange, or a deep orange with pink overtones. The name is derived from the Sandskrit/Sinhalese “padma raga,” meaning “lotus color” and refers to the orange/pink color of the lotus flower. Most padparadscha gems are small, less than two carats in weight. However, a stone from Sri Lanka is on display at the America Museum of Natural History in New York that weighs an incredible 100 carats. Though once considered an obscure gemstone, the padparadscha sapphire has recently gained in popularity for its rarity and beautiful fashion color. These sapphires are not mined in great quantities, so even stones with slight to moderate inclusions are still valuable gems. For decades collectors, dealers, and gemologists have debated the issue of how pink or orange a stone in this category can be and whether some stones are too dark to qualify to be a padparadscha. To date there is no agreeable standard for the color range. Natural padparadscha is among the rarest and most highly prized varieties of sapphire and has become a collector’s item. It is also a very expensive gemstone. Some believe that padparadscha sapphires are enpowering stones for artists, writers, singers and all who wish to express their deepest truth in cre-

ative expressions. These gemstones are useful for both sexes in enhancing sex drive and increasing sexual pleasure. They are also powerful stones for increasing fertility. They say that these sapphires bring a vital energy to the emotions, allowing one to be more outgoing and dynamic, playful and full of joy. In antiquity, diamonds and rubies were divided by the Hindus into four classes, and being a sapphire corundum of unique reddish hue, padparadscha was called the Oriental Ruby. It was said that the possession of a padparadscha sapphire conferred perfect safety upon the owner, and as long as he owned the precious stone, he could dwell without fear in the midst of enemies and was shielded from bad fortune. However, great care had to be taken to keep this stone of the first class from contact with inferior specimens, as its virtue would be contaminated and its power for good diminished accordingly. The original locality for padparadscha was Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and many purist today believe the term should be restricted only to stones from Sri Lanka. However, the stones have also been found in Vietnam’s Quy Chau district, Tanzania’s Tunduru district and Madagascar. Stones from each of these areas are often heat-treated at a low temperature and such heat treatment is not always detectable. Padparadscha sapphires are considered among the most beautiful and valuable of the corundum gems. Prices for the padparadscha vary greatly according to size and quality. At the high end, they may reach as much as $50,000 per carat.

Going Green

America is becoming greener

T

hanks to innovative inventions by eco-friendly manufacturers and new services by retailers, America is becoming greener. More and more national companies are now publicly declaring themselves eco-friendly, which can mean anything from manufacturing a tubeless toilet paper to recycling waste to repairing electronics. Also Americans have increased t h e i r awareness of purchasing products that are more eco-friendly to our earth. That’s really great green news for Mother Earth. Colorado companies have taken the lead in many types of green recycling, such as Alpine Waste & Recycle in Commerce City. They are the first company in Colorado to recycle all types of polystyrene foam (commonly known as Styrofoam) from businesses and homeowners. About 99 percent of recycling companies don’t accept Styrofoam waste because it is difficult to recycle and make large investments in new complex machinery, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Now this company can take this environmentallyharmful product, which takes hundreds of years to decompose, and recycle it in a single-stream process into 60-pound bricks. These plastic bricks then can be transformed into many things from park benches to picture frames. Unfortunately, however, Colorado has one energy-hog industry that produces a green colored product, but definitely is not eco-friendly. It’s the cannabis (marijuana) industry. According to a recent article in the Denver Post, Colorado’s pot facilities used as much energy in 2014 as 35,000 homes. Furthermore, this booming industry’s 24-hour demands for thousands of their indoor growing sites taxes aging electricity grids and unravels hard-earned gains in energy conservation.

New green tubeless toilet paper

I am always searching for new ways to go green, but I never ever expected to find a way to save trees by using tubeless toilet paper. Presently more than 17 billion card-

board toilet paper tubes are used every year, which is enough to fill the Empire State Building twice, according to the makers of Scott’s new tube-free toilet paper. Recently I purchased a roll and discovered that it rolled easily without the tube. When I read more information on their website, www.scottnataurals.com, I discovered that a household of two adults purchases enough cardboard tubes with their toilet paper in a lifetime to completely cover a queensize bed. This fact has convinced me to continue to purchase tubeless toilet paper as another easy way to go green.

Become a CASA in Jefferson, Gilpin counties

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Jefferson and Gilpin counties (CASA Jeffco/Gilpin) is steadily growing; however, there continues to be a strong need for dedicated community members to become a voice for abused or neglected children in court. With more than 200 committed and compassionate CASA volunteers, CASA Jeffco/Gilpin is only able to provide support to less than 35 percent of the cases in court for abused or neglected children. CASA Jeffco/ Gilpin needs your help and support to ensure that every child in our community has a safe, permanent home. You can make a difference in the life of a child by becoming a CASA volunteer. CASA volunteers are caring adults who are appointed by a judge; they provide the courts with objective information and recommendations to help ensure that a child abuse victim’s best interests are served. Previous experience is not necessary, just

compassion for children and the desire to make a difference in our community. It’s that time of the year that we begin to reflect, set new goals, try new things, and give back. The next CASA of Jeffco/Gilpin volunteer training is scheduled to begin Monday, Jan. 25. The training course includes approximately 40 hours training. All in-person sessions will be held at the Jefferson County Courthouse, 100 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden, CO 80401. For more information, contact Tiffany Schlag at 303-271-6537 or at tiffany schlag@casajeffcogilpin.com.

LAND OVERLOOKING BLACK HAWK & CENTRAL CITY

Other new ways to go green

What seemed to be impossibility for decades has now become a reality. Now customers can purchase quality alkaline batteries made from partly recycled batteries, thanks to Energizer battery scientists. These scientists used breakthrough technology and exclusive partnerships to introduce the company’s EcoAdvanced batteries made with 4 percent recycled batteries and longest lasting alkaline. Also I am delighted to find new ways to keep my cordless, battery-powered personal electronics running instead of buying new ones. For its customers, Batteries Plus stores now offer free installation of batteries in electronics and recycling of old batteries and electronics purchased in its stores. Plus, their experts can repair broken screens for iPhones and iPads. “We are an extremely green company,” reports Stephen Wiles, president of the Denver area franchise stores. “It’s our business to know batteries, light bulbs, and electronic devices inside and out. We do more than offer an amazing assortment of products, we also provide services to make your products work better and last longer.”

John Wayne epitomized the Western hero for decades. He is shown here with Gail Russell in The Angel and the Badman. playing minor parts, usually the schoolmarm or the saloon girl with the heart of gold. This stereotype prevailed in TV westerns of the 1950s and early 60s, a.k.a. Miss Kitty in Gunsmoke. The one exception was Gail Davis, who played the part of sharpshooter Annie Oakley in the TV series of the same name. Although producers continued to make Western movies, they stopped making low budget films in the 1950s due to competition from TV. The genre proliferated on television, with series including singing cowboys Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger and Tonto, The Cisco Kid, Maverick, Hopalong Cassidy and a host of others. One TV series, Rawhide (1959-1966) spawned the next cowboy superstar, Clint Eastwood, who played the role of Rowdy. Social unrest dominated the ‘60s and ‘70s in America, reflected by the Westerns, which took on an anti-establishment and often humorous tone, from Eastwood’s “spaghetti Westerns,” made in Italy, to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and the hilarious Blazing Saddles. Eastwood in par-

ticular created characters that were cold-blooded killers who were still, in a sense, good guys, in films like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Only John Wayne refused to play the anti-hero, and people still flocked to his movies in spite of critic Pauline Kael’s pontification that “The Western is dead.” Films like Midnight Cowboy, The Electric Horseman and Urban Cowboy attempted to provide a broader view of America during the 1970s with varying degrees of success. The subsequent decades have failed to produce a Cowboy hero of the John Wayne caliber, Kevin Cosner came the closest (Dances with Wolves and Wyatt Earp) although Keifer Sutherland (Silverado and Young Guns) and Sam Elliot (Lonesome Dove) deserve honorable mention. Beginning with Eastwood’s Unforgiven in the 1990s, Western movies have become increasingly violent, such as Academy Award winners No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood. For those of us who miss the good old days of Maverick and Bonanza, however, there are always reruns.

I like winter … really

I’d tell my Florida friend that I like having four seasons. I wouldn’t tell her that sometimes we only have two, and the two that get skipped are my favorites, spring and fall. Still I like the variety. People who live in the land of permanent summer probably order vanilla every time they go to Baskin Robbins. And it melts faster there. I’d tell her the changing seasons give me a chance to move the winter clothes out of my closet and move the summer clothes in. If it weren’t for winter, I’d never clean my closet. I’d tell her I love a white Christmas. I don’t care for a white Halloween or a white Easter, and I’ve seen plenty of both. But I wouldn’t tell her that. And I’d say, “Haven’t you ever heard of a snow blower?” I wouldn’t ask her if she’s ever heard of a snow shovel, because I bet she has. I’d tell her that being snowed in can be fun and I really mean that— as long as the power stays on. And as long as it doesn’t last long, and there’s nowhere I want to go, and I

have a good book to read and plenty of food to eat, and there’s someone else to do the shoveling. Then it’s really fun. I’d tell her that those of us in cold climates know enough
