Front Seat: A Good Ride Dodge Charger conquers snow with AWD, V-6 FRONT SEAT
By Bud Wells Dodge, on and off over the years, has built a strong performance image for its Charger. It’s been based on Hemi V-8s and rear-wheel-drive power. Let me tell you, though, with 8 to 10 inches of snow in the streets and frigid air hovering around -2, you can forget all about that. Another side of the 2015 Dodge Charger emerged as I drove it
through all that snow. We were in the new Charger SXT all-wheel-drive edition. This SXT is the family sedan side of the Charger, with an excellent AWD system, Pentastar V-6 and 8-speed automatic transmission. It performed very well for the deep snow and subzero cold we maneuvered through in northern Colorado, with Michelin all-season tires. The 292-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 moves the Charger about with ease and the eight-speed automatic is controlled electronically, with a large T-grip handle like those of linkage connection of the past. There are no paddle shifters, though manual mode is available with a quick move of the shifter handle. The AWD system gripped and churned well, with minimal slip or slide. It’s an effective active transfer case that, innovatively, disengages the front axle when all-four grip is not needed – an effort at improved fuel mileage. The system automatically engages in cold weather, when
slip is detected or when wipers are on in wet weather. The AWD model carries an EPA estimate of 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway; my overall average slipped to 20.8 due to all the cold, snow and ice. A new electric power steering system has replaced the old electromechanical power type. It has three driver-selectable steering modes – eco, comfort and sport – contributing to a more nimble response that, on occasion, belies the car’s large size. This is a car with a 120-inch wheelbase, 198 inches overall and 4,150 pounds. It is seven inches longer in wheelbase than the Ford Taurus AWD and nine inches beyond that of the Buick LaCrosse AWD. The Charger’s exterior has been refreshed for 2015, with crosshair grille, chiseled and scalloped bodysides. A “racetrack” LED taillight spreads across the entire rear width of the body, similar to that which showed up on the Dodge Du-
rango a year ago. The full-sized four-door boasts a roomy interior, with wide clothcovered seats (heated in front), lightly bolstered for long-distance comfort. The heated seats are extremely popular; I seldom use them, though, and would have traded them for a heated steering wheel in a minute. Legroom is sufficient in the rear seat and a goodsized trunk measures out to 16 cubic feet. Adding to the V-6-powered, AWD-equipped ChargerSXT’s family appeal is a large 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation maps from Garmin. Bluetooth syncing is part of the package. The screen is easily used, as are the redundant dials beneath the screen. Base price on the SXT AWD is $32,995; the sticker totals $35,485 with the addition of ivory tricoat pearl paint, the navigation, backup camera and SiriusXM travel link. Automatic headlamps, remote start and dual-zone temperature control

were among a long list of standard items. The Charger serves a younger buyer than does its stablemate, the Chrysler 300. They’re identically sized. Buyers of the Charger, with its performance image, are 10 years younger on average than buyers of the luxurious 300. The Charger was introduced in the fall of 1965 as a ’66 model and continued production through 1977. Its most popular models were the good-looking, coke-bottle shaped 1968, ’69 and ‘70s. The Charger name was used on a Dodge Omni 024 compact from 1982-87, then discontinued until the 2006 model on the chassis of the Chrysler 300.

T
he year was 1895, Park City, Utah, south of Evanston, Wyo., and the Chapman’s Neponset Land and Livestock, this is where this story begins. The area around Salt Lake had discoveries of precious metals in the early 1860s, only two years after the finding of gold in 1858 in Colorado. These discoveries may have been part of the motion set off by the “Pike’s Peak or Bust” mentality in Colorado. Park City became known by 1869 for its silver. This was topped off by the hugely lucrative Ontario Mine in the Park City area. According to his tombstone, Patrick “Pat” Coughlin, a primary character in our story, was

born June 23, 1873. Coughlin’s family moved west apparently so his father could work for the Union Pacific or one of its subsidiaries. Cough© Anna Lee Ames Frohlich lin would have been 22 at the time of this story. Not a pleasant person, he started early exhibiting cruelty to animals and children. He was just tough and mean, and had already been convicted of horse stealing and been sent to the state penitentiary. He also proved to be a bad influence on an acquaintance, Fred George, who came from a good, decent Salt Lake City family and could have done well in life. Instead he had already been in a reform school from which he had escaped. Then he started hanging
around with Coughlin. Coughlin would have spent his youth and his formative teenage years in Park City in the 1880s. During that time more families were moving into the area causing it to grow tamer, but it was still the roughest and rowdiest town in Utah territory. In the 1870s it had been the mining town version of a railroad “Hell on Wheels.” It had mills, smelters, ore refineries (meaning it was very noisy, 24 hours a day), stores, boarding houses, houses of prostitution, saloons, theaters and buildings related to mining. It was probably more of an open town than many Utah mining towns as it had a higher proportion of non-Mormons. Col. Patrick Connor, stationed at Ft. Douglas in Salt Lake, encouraged non-Mormons in his command to learn prospecting and to search for valuable metals in the Park City area. Connor’s goals were to bring more non-Mormons into Utah and to strike it rich in the meantime. He succeeded at both. On a fateful day in early July 1865, possibly the 11th, Coughlin and his younger friend, and sidekick George, were on their way to Park City from Salt Lake. With them was a friend named Kennedy. The three rode toward Park City drunk and with mischief in their souls. Galloping past a vendor on his way to sell fresh strawberries in Park City, they helped themselves to a few quarts of strawberries and took off down the road. They lost the vendor and parked themselves at the local bordello where they began adding to their liquored-up state. It seems that the women who ran the sporting house were, like others, tired of the pranks that these young men were known for, because they let a local official know that the strawberry fugitives were there. Meanwhile, the strawberry vendor, not to be forgotten, exacted his vengeance by notifying Sheriff Herrington. The sheriff filled out warrants for the arrest of
Coughlin and George on a charge of petty larceny and started out to apprehend them. Word reached the young men, however, that the sheriff was looking for them, so they mounted their horses and galloped back in the direction on Salt Lake. Their friend Kennedy surrendered and was given 20 days in jail. Sheriff Herrington missed catching Patrick and George, and later George commented that it would have been better if they had all been captured. Thus subsequent events would not have happened. This would have been a good time to drop out of sight in Salt Lake or elsewhere, but on July 14, they stole a horse in Murray
making them guilty of grand larceny. At that time they started talking to an acquaintance of George’s, A.D. Bruce about joining them on a trip to Wyoming, possibly Sweetwater, to find work herding sheep or mining. Like many people affected by the silver panic of 1893, Bruce was out of work. The trip sounded interesting, but he thought about it for awhile. On July 24, Bruce had decided to go along to Wyoming, and that night they went to Caulder’s Park, an amusement park near Salt Lake. Apparently Coughlin had thoughts of robbing a streetcar or stealing a horse there, but it was late and people were gone. Bruce was riding the same horse as Coughlin, and Coughlin said he could get one cheap. In the dark of the night he broke into the stable of a Mr. Rule and stole a sorrel horse and a saddle. For a time they had three horses, and Bruce was riding the sorrel. He went home the morning of the 25th and got his rifle.

Bill, Calamity Jane, Will Rogers and Annie Oakley all donned Stetsons when they performed and likely when out of the saddle as well. It is said that George Custer rode into the Battle of Little Big Horn wearing a Stetson. The Stetson Company thrived in the 21st century, as the hat was popularized by celebrities and movie stars. By 1915, 5,400 employees made 3.3 million hats a year. The “The Boss of the Plains” became the symbol of the American West worn by the Hollywood film stars, and it helped turn the cowboy into an American icon. The Stetson was a practical choice too. Both U.S. Forest Service employees and Texas Rangers wore Stetsons for decades as they moved about the western lands. Royal Canadian Mounted Police were known for their flat-brimmed Stetson. Colorado School of Mines in 1905 started the tradition of the “Senior Stetson”, providing seniors a hat as they started their final year. A year’s worth of wear helped break in the hat so it didn’t look like a pristine hat worn by a greenhorn. Of course, President Lyndon B. Johnson wore a Stetson, the “Open Road.” The popularity of Stetson hats lives on, but those who want a handmade cowboy hat have several custom hat makers to choose from in Colorado. Tom Hirt operates Hats of the West in Penrose using 100-year-old hat blocks to mold his custom hats, which sell for $350-$800 and take him one week to make. He sews the hats’ sweatband by hand and uses an old Singer sewing machine to put the binding around the brim. Hirt’s hats
are on display at the Gene Autrey Museum in Los Angeles and the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Guthrie, Oklahoma. They are also headgear for celebrities such as Sam Elliot, Kurt Russell, Burt Reynolds, Sharon Stone and singer Charlie Daniels. He’s been named best hat maker in the west twice by True West magazine. Nathaniel’s of Colorado, located on Main Street in Mancos, custom fits the hat to each client using a “hat conformer”. Owner Nate Funmaker considers the customer’s head size and complexion when recommending the shape and color of the hat. A Master Hatter, Funmaker uses 100 percent beaver fur, 100 percent rabbit fur or a 50/50 percent combination of rabbit and beaver. Prices range from $500 to $875 and hats come in 19 different colors, including pink, purple and whiskey. Nate was named “Best Living Hat Maker” by True West in 2008. The Colorado Hat Company in Fairplay offers a couple dozen styles and will add custom touches like pencil roll, whip stitch lacing, beading and dress-ribbon binding. They ship their hats all over the world for use in historic re-enactments, costumes and other occasions to be “roofed by a high western hat”. Greeley Hat Works may be the oldest Colorado custom hat maker, creating and renovating head wear since 1909. They offer 20 or more western styles and also hand produce many non-cowboy hats to “make your hat dream come true.” The top-of-the line is a $1,700 Tycoon Cattleman Mink cowboy hat. Gidyap & yeehaw!
In many western towns, photographs happily shot portraits of easterners “duded out” in cowboy duds. The Stetson, or a cheaper counterpart, was essential attire.
Even Spencer Penrose and Charles L. Tutt donned cowboy hats for this photograph taken to promote Cripple Creek mining stocks to Philadelphia investors.

Most metals and plastics from spent batteries are used to make new batteries.
