Historic Landmark in August of this year? This makes the park the 25th National Historic Landmark in Colorado. Governor John Hickenlooper was excited about the designation, saying in a statement that Red Rocks is, “renowned as the only naturally occurring, acoustically perfect amphitheatre in the world.” In 2015, there have been over 120 shows so far and more than 1 million concertgoers have enjoyed an evening at the famous amphitheatre. They even had a wild idea of installing an elevator at the base of Ship Rock that would whisk visitors up to the top of the rock and a narrow suspension bridge 200 feet above the amphitheatre that they would use to walk to the top of Creation Rock. While these plans did not happen, the Walkers did accomplish some amazing wonders. In 1906, they built a large 70 - person viewing platform on the top of Creation Rock with 120 steps carved out of the rock that can still be seen today. They also built the Mount Morrison Funicular Railroad in 1909 that whisked visitors up 2,000 feet to the top of Mount Morrison providing outstanding views with the scar o n the mountainside still visible.

hat did you do this summer? Lots of poker I’m sure, but did you get out and enjoy the splendor and outdoor opportunities Colorado has to offer? For me it was a great summer of live action $30 - $60 limit hold em poker and it’s now tournament season. I’ll be at the Golden Gates Poker Room tonight beginning my push toward the large fall and winter tournaments coming up. This year I plan on playing them and doing well! But, back to this summer. For me, when not playing poker I spent many days up at Red Rocks Park putting the finishing touches on a upcoming book that will be on the bookshelves by late October titled Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre / Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow. Let’s take a break from poker for one column - and talk about the amazing wonders and spectacular beauty of Red Rocks Park. Over the years, many different types of artists have played the stage from The Beatles in 1964 (the only show on their North American tour not sold out), to the famous storm – whipped U2 show in 1983 that brought the amphitheatre to the world with their famous video, to the band Wide - Spread panic playing a record 50+ sold out shows over the years. John Denver played his famous ballad Rocky Mountain High for the first time ever in on the Red Rocks Stage in 1972 and played there a total of 17 times from 1972 - 1989. He absolutely loved the venue and said, “Red Rocks is my favorite place to sing.” Today, Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre is a bustling place with hikers, bicyclists, visitors, and concert goers visiting from dawn till well after dark. It’s a must see and if you get a chance on your way up or back from the poker tables be sure to stop in for a visit, a concert, or even a nice hike.
