Centennial parents awarded $3.75 million in son’s death By Peter Jones Last week, an Arapahoe County jury awarded $3.75 million in a lawsuit filed by the parents of a 12-year-old Centennial boy who drowned three years ago at Southglenn Country Club. Drennen O’Melia, 12, a swimrace winner, drowned in June 2010 during a birthday party while two lifeguards were on duty. His parents filed a wrongful-death suit against the country club, claiming the lifeguards were negligent and

that Southglenn had inadequate safety policies. The lawsuit also named the club’s general manager and the two lifeguards. Drennen, who had won several swim races on the day before the incident, was pulled by another boy out of the shallow end of the pool near an unoccupied lifeguard chair. During the trial, an expert testified that Drennen had been underwater for at least five minutes.

By Peter Jones A proposal for a charter school in Englewood has failed – again. For the second time in less than a year, the Englewood Schools Board of Education voted unanimously last week to deny an application to establish Carlton Academy, a semi-autonomous tax-supported elementary and middle school in the district. In the resolution, passed 4-0 on Oct. 22, the school board cited a number of reasons for the rejection, including questions about the school’s proposed Core Knowledge curriculum, a perceived lack of community interest, transportation and location questions, and budgetary projections, among a host of other concerns. As the resolution notes, the application failed to receive an “adequate” overall score of 3 out of 4 in an independent analysis that used criteria from the Colorado Department of Education and charter-school organizations. School Board President Scott Gorsky says the bottom line for him is it would be difficult to support a new charter school without a groundswell of public support. “We didn’t see that again,” he said, noting what he con-

sidered similar public ambivalence about Carlton’s first application last December. “I have received no phone calls whatsoever. I didn’t receive any emails from anyone.” Members of the board of directors for the proposed school say they remain undeterred and will likely submit a third application to the school board or appeal the matter to the state Education Department, depending, in large part, on an upcoming student population assessment. Theresa Martens, a former Englewood Schools specialeducation teacher who is now running for a spot on the Centennial City Council, says the Carlton board is frustrated, but unwavering in its commitment. “We’re very disappointed. We’re not going to quit. We’re determined to do this,” she said. “If it’s another application or an appeal, we’re going forward.” Martens disputes the contention that the proposed school is lacking public support, though she concedes it has been difficult to organize the Englewood community. “They are working families and can’t make it out,” she said. “We have 100 letters of intent, and we have a lot of community leaders, the City Council, Arapahoe County commissioners, some churches and businesses. We have the support – so for them to deny Continued on page 4

Fugitive arrested in Aurora Estes suspected of bank robberies in Englewood and elsewhere By Peter Jones .S. marshals have captured a fugitive who escaped from federal custody and is a suspect in two recent bank robberies, including one in Englewood. Robert Estes, 59, a repeat offender, is suspected of robbing a Denver bank and a second bank located in a King Soopers store in Englewood. Police believe he may have had a gun during the robberies because in surveillance videos his hand can be seen tucked in his sweatshirt. He was captured Oct. 28

Robert Estes without incident after marshals developed a possible location for Estes and observed him at the

Radiant Inn on East Colfax Avenue in Aurora. Estes escaped from federal supervision on Oct. 16 when he was released from the federal FCI Englewood facility in Jefferson County and did not report to a halfway house as ordered. Instead, he reportedly took a taxicab to a branch of U.S. Bank. Estes has a long criminal history. He committed armed robbery in 1995 and in 2003 called in a fake bomb to rob another bank. “Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our fugitive investigators, this violent bank robber is now again in custody where he no longer poses a risk to the community,” Chief Deputy Kenneth Deal said.

Santa Fe at Oxford to close this weekend Road over railroad tracks to be replaced By Tom Barry This weekend, the Colorado Department of Transportation will close Santa Fe Drive between Union and Oxford avenues from Friday, Nov. 1, reopening, weather permitting, early the next Monday morning, Nov. 4. Major delays are expected throughout the weekend and alternate routes are strongly suggested. Both directions of Santa Fe will be shut down allowing construction activates to replace materials between the railroad tracks. “Over the last several months, the roadway and the material between the rails have failed, creating an uneven driving surface,” said CDOT Resident Engineer Ron Buck. “In order to resolve the issues at this location, we must replace the railroad cross-

ing, including the roadway approaches and rail components.” In actuality, this railroad crossing has deteriorated vastly over the last two years, as motorists hit the tracks driving in excess of 50 mph. The closures are expected to begin at 10 p.m. on Friday night and be completed before the Monday morning rush hour. “The repairs are estimated to cost $998,000,” said Mindy Crane, a CDOT spokeswoman. “The Union Pacific Railroad will work jointly with CDOT to replace the at-grade crossing, approximately 500 feet south of Oxford Ave. Business and residential access will still be available at Oxford Avenue and Union Avenue. “Motorists on northbound Santa Fe Drive can take Belleview Avenue east to Federal Boulevard and then travel north on Federal Boulevard to Hampden Avenue. Take Hampden Avenue west to Santa Fe Drive.” CDOT also noted, “motorists

on southbound Santa Fe Drive can take Hampden Avenue east to Federal Boulevard and then travel south on Federal Boulevard to Belleview Avenue. Take Belleview Avenue west to Santa Fe Drive.” The contractor for this repair construction project is Lawrence Construction Company.

Letters to the Editor Vote Jack Reutzel for LPS school board

Our community schools are important to me, both personally and professionally. My children have been in the LPS school system since kindergarten and are now both at Heritage and I am thankful every day for the strength of our schools. I’m also a RE/MAX agent and know that strong schools are one of the very top criteria for families considering the Littleton area. Jack Reutzel is the best candidate for the LPS school board. Jack’s passionate commitment to the strength of our school district is unrivaled. He knows that our community is only as strong as our schools, and that our award winning schools need strong leadership to continue on a trajectory toward greatness. I’ve witnessed Jack’s commitment over the past ten years as he supported educational endeavors at Wilder Elementary, Goddard Middle, and Heritage High Schools. His thoughtful approach to problem solving has benefited all of the LPS schools as a member of principal search committees, accountability committees, and financial advisory committees. We need someone with his level of experience and commitment representing our community to keep Littleton Public Schools one of the strongest in the nation.

Andrea Myers Culhane Littleton

Yes on 3B because ‘children are our future’

When I first decided to write a letter about the importance of our community supporting the bond election 3B, my motives and letter were much different. They changed after a simple phone call. I was volunteering at the “Yes on 3B” phone bank and spoke to an 82-year-old man. His story stuck in my head and changed my letter. This man told me how sick he was, but that he had read every detail of his Election Guide. He mentioned how impressed he was that the district was asking for a certain amount of money so they wouldn’t have to raise our taxes. He knows that LPS has been putting Band-Aids on the aging buildings and now many of them need some big repairs. He then told me that this was a smart investment, because “the children are our future.” After a few minutes on the phone with this wise man, I realized how lucky I am to be part of a community that recognizes the importance of a quality education and supporting Littleton Public Schools. This man whose name I wish I knew, reminded me how smart our community is and that I do not need to persuade this audience; I need to thank you for doing the right thing and voting Yes on 3B. To the gentleman I can not get out of my

mind, I hope you feel better, I wish I knew where you lived and I could bring you some soup. Thank you for reading your election material and thanking me for volunteering. I will keep doing it, because you are right, “the children are our future.” And thank you for reminding me how lucky I am to have children in this caring community. Nancy Seavall Centennial

Vote yes on 3B

I urge local voters to vote yes on ballot question 3B. It will enable critical repairs to our Littleton Public Schools. I served this year as a citizen member of the district Capital Improvement Planning Committee. This summer the CIPC toured all the district schools. We saw leaking roofs in classrooms, loud and ineffective climate control units, roofs supported with temporary struts, cracked floors, and compacted and unsafe play fields. The need for these projects is real and in many cases urgent. The district budgets about $1.5 million per year for capital maintenance needs. At that rate, capital needs every year go unaddressed, and the district builds a backlog of projects. How can we pay for all these repairs? The options explored by the Financial Advisory Committee (on which I also serve) include using the district’s capacity to borrow (like a home equity loan), spending operational dol-

lars and necessitating significant cuts in educational programs, or pledging district assets and incurring a higher borrowing cost through a Certificate of Participation. Members of the FAC agreed that the “home equity” strategy is the right method to fund these projects.
Nothing in life is free. Careful management of the district’s existing debt has created an opportunity to borrow the funds without increasing the tax rate paid. The existing tax rate would extend, and homeowners would forgo a slight tax decrease: approximately $1 per month for each $100,000 of home value, or about $48 per year for a $400,000 home. Keeping our schools safe and productive for learning will help support all our property values; forgoing a tax decrease of $50 per year is a good investment. All of the funds would stay in LPS. We can and should do better for our kids. Join me and vote yes on 3B this fall. Jim Stephens Centennial

Academy would be first-ever charter school for district Continued from Page 1 us on that was unfounded.” A third of the letters of intent were from Englewood parents, Martens said. Carlton Academy would be the district’s first-ever charter school, a tuition-free facility that would operate by contract with the taxsupported public school district. The school’s vision would be based around the popular Core Knowledge curriculum that is used by many charter schools. While Carlton may have faired poorly on a charter-school assessment, Englewood Schools is not scoring so well itself. In the 2009-10 school year, the district came in near the bottom in rankings on the standardized Colorado Student Assessment Program. More recently, Englewood’s Bishop Elementary School failed to meet standards set in the federal No Child Left Behind law, prompting a letter to parents that offered them an opportunity to send their children to other schools. In a 2012 three-year report, the district’s ratings were for academic achievement (37.5 percent), academic growth (51.2 percent) academic growth gaps (47 percent) and postsecondary and workforce readiness (37.5 percent). An inevitable consideration is the financial impact a charter school would have on the rest of the district, which would lose $6,800 in state and local revenue for every district student who left other Englewood schools to attend Carlton Academy. Since 2003, the small landlocked Englewood district has lost nearly a third of its students, as well as the state funding that travels with them. In recent years, Englewood has closed an elementary school and a middle school because of low enrollment and some fear more closures are on the way. Martens believes the reason the school board has opposed Carlton is a fear that the charter school would reduce funds going to the district’s surviving schools. “Opponents are aggressively out there telling people that’s what we will do, that we’ll drain the schools of funding,” she said. “They don’t understand, this is a public school. It stays within the district.” Gorsky, the outgoing school board president and a candidate for Englewood City Council, disputes the often-repeated charge that the board has been prejudicial against the proposal since the beginning. “If we felt that way, we wouldn’t have had outside consultants review the application,” he said. “There were many eyes on this application and the scores just didn’t come back strong enough to pass it along.” Whatever the Carlton proposal’s merits, it could be a moot point. An important factor in the debate will be determined in November when the school district’s official student population will be announced. If the enrollment turns out to be fewer than 3,000 students, the district would be ineligible for a charter school by state law. At last count, the district had 2,981 students.

Football, public land, and highway repairs

Congratulations to Colorado State University for their recent victory over the Wyoming Cowboys playing in Laramie, Wyo., and bringing back home the Bronze Boot. This is the first time in the last three years CSU has won and it really shows the progress being made by Athletic Director Jack Graham and Coach Jim McElwain. Looks like the Rams may gain enough support for the new football stadium on campus in Fort Collins. Metro CSU fans should get behind the new stadium and the football program. The game against Alabama was a real boon

Broncos

The Broncos offense should never had sent Hillman into the line on the 2-yard line against the Colts. The small back fumbled the ball after being mauled by the huge linemen. If anything, Hillman is fast running around the outside. Anyway, the Broncos are a treat and there are great games looming against Kansas City and San Diego for the league lead. The Broncos will enjoy a break with the upcoming bye week.

Amendment 66

I’m unimpressed with the ads for Amendment 66 showing kids in a gym class, playing band instruments, and watching a water

wheel making a clay pot. Not enough reasons to tax Colorado citizen $1 billion in new taxes. We should be paying to put all Kindergarten kids into school, not just those who can afford to pay the afternoon tuition. That cost might have been only around $200 million, which I would vote for in a heartbeat. That issue needs to be addressed by the Legislature in 2014.

Focus is off

I think all of us – Democrats, Republicans and Tea Party folks – need to concentrate on fiscal matters. Spending less and figuring ways to reduce the national debt, while looking at income tax proposals, flat taxes, and other means to balance the budget. I think debating the social issues like gay marriage, marijuana and abortion should be individual choices left up to each individual and their lifestyle choices. One way to get out of debt would be to sell all of the federal lands being administered by the BLM that cost billions to maintain. We need to stake out our National Parks, any proposed Wilderness areas, and sell the rest to private individuals, hunters, ranchers, investors and home-

builders and get out of the public land business. Most of the government land is without water, so homesteaders didn’t want to live on the dry land. Today, homeowners can develop water wells and those wanting to live in rural areas could inhabit much of land. Years ago it was discussed under the name of “Sagebrush Rebellion,” but usage of public lands should be a legislative topic in Colorado and Washington, D.C.

Government funding

Surprisingly, the local media has not had much to say about the $450 million payment to Colorado tucked into the funding of the government that will come to Colorado for flood damage relief. The bill was put into play by Sens. Udall and Bennett during the Washington drama and was passed into the Senate budget proposal. That is a huge amount of money heading toward Colorado roads, bridges and damaged flood areas. Repairing highways and bridges is a function of government and while adding to the fiscal challenges, it was good work by our two Colorado senators.

It can be difficult to decide who to vote for in any election – much less a school board election. Littleton Public Schools is fortunate to have five qualified candidates vying for the three open LPS school board seats. Jack Reutzel is among the candidates running for LPS school board. I had the pleasure to work with Jack Reutzel for two years on the Goddard Accountability Committee. All schools within LPS have accountability committees which meet monthly to discuss school issues including budgeting, testing, enrollment and other vital topics impacting their school. Jack was chair of the Goddard Accountability Committee both years I served. During my time on the committee I was continually amazed at Jack’s knowledge of the issues facing Goddard Middle School and LPS. I was also impressed with Jack’s ability to work with diverse groups, listening to all parties and then bringing them together to arrive at a consensus that benefits all members of the organization. Jack currently serves on the Littleton Council on Teacher Effectiveness which was created to align the district’s current system of supervision and evaluation for licensed personnel with Senate Bill 191 “Educator Effectiveness” signed into law in 2010. Senate Bill 191 has proven to be an extremely difficult mandate for the districts to address and Jack is bringing his wealth of knowledge of LPS and its unique issues to this important task. Jack was asked to serve on this council and I know it was in recognition of the value he brings to any organization lucky enough to have his involvement. The education of our children is important and we need to have a knowledgeable school board capable of working together to further the excellence of Littleton Public Schools. I encourage you to consider Jack Reutzel for LPS school board. Sally Bernsten Littleton

Vote yes on 3B

Voting Yes on 3B is an easy decision for me and I hope it will be for others. We moved to Colorado almost 10 years ago and we chose Littleton Public Schools because of the history of excellence. My children have thrived in our LPS schools. Our strong schools benefit our children directly, but also have a positive impact on our property values and our community as a whole. I respect the prudent decisions that have been made by our LPS leadership. As a district, we always put our children first and we don’t spend taxpayer dollars on fancy extras. LPS has a long history of making smart decisions that promote both academic excellence and fiscal responsibility. This history has built trust and good will with our community. Ballot Issue 3B is another smart decision. The $80 million in funds generated by 3B will go directly to a well-researched list of important repairs and safety improvements. By refinancing existing debt at a lower interest rate, the school district is able to issue new bonds without increasing the tax rate. This approach is consistent what many of us have done as homeowners – refinance so that funds can go back into maintain our property. I trust that LPS will always keep our children safe at school, but with the funds from 3B we can finally make serious repairs to roofs, HVAC systems, electrical and other areas that will help keep our buildings safe and strong for the future. I know that many of my fellow residents do not have children in our schools, but this community has a strong history of supporting our schools. I hope that my fellow citizens will join me in voting yes on 3B. Amy Kurtz Centennial

Dear citizens of Englewood

I am writing this letter to you to express my support for Linda Olson and Scott Gorsky for City Council positions. It is my opinion that these two are the best candidates to fill the council seats because of their dedication, knowledge of Englewood and their ability to disseminate facts to make the right decisions for the City of Englewood. Both Linda and Scott have served in positions either as council or school board members, which give them a background that helps

to make best practice decisions for Englewood. They are both very well versed in budgetary issues, growth needs of the city and are both readily available to the citizens of Englewood. These candidates have a track record of vested interest in Englewood becoming the best that it can be. They are willing to invest time into council issues and are both willing to stand on their beliefs, even if it is not the most popular decision. Their decisions will be made because of the research they are willing to put into the issue. They reach out to the community to listen and discuss the issues at hand, and have a vision of how their decisions will benefit Englewood in the future. I urge you to vote for both Linda Olson and Scott Gorsky in the upcoming election to keep the city moving forward, continue to make Englewood a city that citizens are proud of, and ensure that Englewood continues to be the best city to live, work, and enjoy. I will also support Initiative 300 on the dedication of parklands. I along with council members am in full support and believe this will end any speculation of which property is dedicated and are truly parks. This initiative will continue to keep all parks land for the future and will not allow any sale of parkland without a vote of the people. Randy Penn Mayor, City of Englewood

Vote Martens for Centennial City Council

Centennial has four seats opening up in City Council and in the best interest of the people and the city of Centennial, those seats need to be replaced with poeople able to look past party-lines and look for solutions. 1. Our system of government requires checks and balances to work well. We can see at the state and national level today what happens when there is a one-sided agenda at work. Gridlock, dissention, and partisanship, instead of a representative government with the people’s best interests put first. 2. To vet a topic and come up with the BEST solutions you need differing perspectives to bring out the influencing variables and chip away at them. 3. Variables with negative impact on specific people groups may never be recognized and considered, and time, energy, and money are wasted in implementation, litigation, removal, and redevelopment when it becomes evident that the solution in fact created additional problems. To find equilibrium you must create disequilibrium to remove the weighty issues that holds back consensus. Being a special education teacher, Theresa Martens understands this and can bring the “civil discourse” needed to vet out solutions that will best represent all of Centennial. She will hear your concerns and protect your interests. Even if you are of a differing ideology, we all win when there is discussion and rational problem solving in our city government. Think about whether you want these four seats filled with people that will just “rubber stamp” the current council’s agenda, or if you want people that will listen to the constituency, question the motives and consequences of each issue, and ensure that each decision is best for Centennial. Cherie Vaughan Greenwood Village

Martens is community conscious, willing to find solutions

When I first moved to Centennial in August 2010, I found the community to be homey, warm and welcoming. Then I bumped into the first member of the City Council. The crisis was nothing that couldn’t have been averted, given any solution-based suggestions, but I ended up feeling beaten up by the City Council member I dealt with, and gave up trying. I had done nothing wrong, and the perception was skewed by a political difference. When I met Theresa Martens, she was working on other political issues and asked how I liked the community. I told her I’d really liked it until I ran into that particular little problem. Theresa wasn’t on the City Council and at

Continued from Page 4 that time wasn’t running for office, but she offered up a solution that worked. We’ve worked on several issues together since that time, and each time, I’ve found Theresa to be fully involved in the solution finding process. Her efforts have been highly beneficial to the community, and I believe, based on my personal experience that she would be an amazing leader. We need more leaders who are community conscious and willing to look for a solution. I’m glad to know Theresa Martens is running for this office and is such a person. Jan Verhoeff Centennial

Gorsky’s ‘track record’ best reason Englewood should vote for Yates

Scott Gorsky answers questions about why he should be on City Council by telling you to check out his “track record” on the Englewood School Board. Anyone who takes him up on that offer will find some disturbing facts. Under Gorsky’s watch the Englewood School District became a failing school district, with two years left on the “turn around” plan before the state takes them over. Gorsky’s flyer asks you to check out the Englewood School website for his “track record” where you will find an abysmal graduation rate of 43.5 percent for the district. It is understandable that over 40 percent of Englewood families take their children out of district for their education. Gorsky claims he is responsible for getting the $52 million tax bond along with the additional $1.5 million per year tax imposed on Englewood Citizens. Considering Englewood High School has less than 600 students with only 100 graduates in 2013, it is apparent the community has done their best to support the district. It seems that no matter how new the buildings a failing district does not bring back students. Gorsky says he has used “Lean Practices”for school budgets. School Board President Gorsky’s “track record” is out of date as 2012 and 2013 have still not been put on the site. However, according to 2011 CAFR report Englewood spent $12,500 per student, $2,500 more per student than the state average. Gorsky says he is can provide leadership and build relationships. Yet he has excused the district’s educational failure claiming, “Englewood kids just aren’t college material,” a disturbing attitude that resulted in many families taking their children out of Englewood Schools. Charter groups trying to develop options for Englewood students describe Gorsky’s behavior as rude, aggressive and bullying during school board meeting to discuss the issues. Gorsky is the running mate of Linda Olson, an incumbent for re-election in District 2. During an October Forum Gorsky said he would not sell Depot Park, deny protest rights, or vote for an overspending budget…but Olson voted for all of those. Olson provided money for his campaign along with campaign material that included Gorsky. It seems Gorsky is part of the “Good ‘Ol Boy” network or maybe he just tells people what they want to hear. Littleton’s future

First, I commend and thank the current City Council and Littleton staff for their diligence and desire to preserve and enhance the quality of life in our community. More has been accomplished to move Littleton into the 21st century by this Council than in previous years. Jim Taylor, thank you for the many years of service you have devoted to Littleton – you will be missed. I attended the recent PUB meeting and had the opportunity to again hear from City Council candidates. As I listened to the questions asked by the citizens present it was obvious that there is a small vocal group whose desire is to micro-manage City Council and Staff. I wish those citizens present would have taken the time to attend the time to attend the Littleton Community Retreat where POSITIVE rather than negative dialogue and ideas concerning Littleton’s future were discussed by a diverse group of community stakeholders. By the end Continued on page 7

Letters to the Editor Continued from Page 6 of the Retreat three priorities emerged: revitalization, healthy choices and mental issues. It was amazing to see how listening with an open mind to everyone’s ideas, concerns and visions laid the framework for future dialogue and collaboration. Littleton has an abundance of resources that were identified and as we work together the quality of life will and can be enhanced with the input by ALL citizens. Experience, knowledge, transparency, background and honesty are important traits as you cast your vote for City Council Candidates. A YES vote on 301 and 302 will stifle the progress and smart growth of Littleton. I urge you to vote NO on 301 and 302. Kay Watson Littleton

Doris Truhlar deserves your vote

Doris Truhlar is an outstanding candidate for Centennial City Council in District 2. She has a special interest in improving the quality of the roads and has stated so publicly on several occasions. She would like to direct more money to roads in District 2 and in the older areas of the city. Doris would like to help small businesses with a local modification of the personal property tax, which could attract more small businesses to the city. With a strong background in community service, Doris Truhlar would serve the citizens of District 2 in an effective and efficient manner. She deserves your vote! Gerry Cummins Centennial

Theresa Martens for Centennial City Council, District 2 Theresa Martens has my support and my vote for Centennial City Council. I did not choose to support Theresa because she is my next-door neighbor and I have known her for 10 years. In fact, I had no idea if I was going to support her when I found out she was running for City Council. Even though we are friends, we share different views. She is conservative, I am extremely liberal. She is Christian, I am Jewish. But after listening to Theresa, I heard something that I also value. I heard her dedication. Her dedication to her family, her church, her neighborhood, her city. Theresa truly cares about the future of Centennial and wants to “maintain its integrity.” She cares so much because this is where her community lives and she wants to see it grow in the right direction. Her dedication is what drives her to be a successful leader in this community. When I listen to Theresa, I hear her energy and genuine determination to make Centennial a better place to live. Unlike her opponent, I also believe she is extremely knowledgeable about issues happening in her city and is aware and receptive to the concerns people have. Her stance on keeping taxes lower, the repair and maintenance of our roads, and being mindful of retail expansion are issues that Theresa cares about. These are all issues that are also important to my family. For all these reason, I support Theresa

in keeping Centennial a wonderful place to live and raise a family. Megan Gardner Centennial

Setting the record straight

A letter in last week’s Villager incorrectly claimed that Doris Truhlar, Centennial District 2 City Council candidate, does not believe our roads are a concern. I was present at this meeting and Doris never stated this. Simply put, nothing could be further from the truth. Doris has stated that she believes road maintenance and repair is No. 1 priority for Centennial. Thank you for allowing me to set the record straight. Lucy Hojo Denson Centennial

Vote NO on 301

As a Littleton citizen, I am very concerned about Questions 301 and 302 on the upcoming ballot. If passed, Question 301 will constrain City Council, boards and commissions from discussing personnel matters and property issues in executive session. While I believe in transparent government, I do know City Council members must sometimes conduct executive sessions to avoid lawsuits and negotiate property issues. Proponents of 301 claim it will “make government listen.” In the past few years the City of Littleton has greatly expanded opportunities to hear from its citizens – by introducing Inspire Littleton online, by holding numerous public hearings, community events and even briefings in each of the districts to hear citizen comments and update residents on various programs and current issues. Sometimes meetings go long into the night because so many people are allowed to speak. We elect council members, expecting they will protect our civic assets and do all they can in confidence to avoid damaging and expensive lawsuits. Join me and vote NO on 301. Keep council working with confidence, even occasionally in the confidentiality of executive session, to protect and promote Littleton’s civic assets. Cindy S. Christensen Littleton

Jack Reutzel for LPS School Board

Still waiting to cast your ballot for the Littleton Public Schools Board election? This election has significant importance for LPS; three of five positions are open on the board, and five candidates are running for the open positions. Since there is a majority position open on the board, this election will help determine the direction of Littleton Public Schools for the next three years. One of the candidates running for the school board is Jack Reutzel. We have known Jack as a peer and personal friend for many years. Our eldest sons went to school together, socialized and played sports together, and graduated high school together. We have seen Jack in a number of roles over the years: leader, parent, professional, coach and volunteer. Jack doesn’t hesitate to step up to the plate when something needs to be done. Once he is involved with an organization, he works hard to help make that organization successful. When he takes on a job, you can be assured he will put forth his best. Jack is honest, intelligent, kind, a good listener, negotiator, and organizer. He

Continued from Page 6 values the past success of Littleton Public Schools, and understands the importance of maintaining a successful school district. If you have not yet cast your ballot, we encourage you to consider Jack Reutzel for LPS School Board. Susan and Ron Tilton Littleton

Russell wins hands down over incumbent Linda Olson

Linda Olson’s vote to sell Depot Park without voter approval along with denying the city has financial problems has citizens concerned about re-electing her. Olson defended her vote to sell Depot Park in violation of the Englewood City Charter by claiming no one told her it was a park. Information distributed in a flyer claims she holds a mater’s degree in parks administration. SAVE Englewood Parks supporters, who successfully put the issue on the ballot, were upset with her claim firing back“that without the aid of a masters degree 950 citizens were able to determine it was a park.” Olson has too many excuses for not upholding the City Charter which resulted in taking away voting rights and ignored the citizen’s right to protest ordinances. This is not the first time that Olson has been on the wrong side of the citizens. In 2011 Olson protested both citizen initiatives 2C and 2D, which were both passed overwhelmingly by the voters. At the time Olson upset many people claiming she feared for her safety from 2C and 2D supporters who feel she overreacts and unwilling to listen any dissenting opinions. Concerns that Olson has trouble handling opposing viewpoints were evident during the budget, retail pot, zoning, and Park sale votes where Olson’s emotional displays left her struggling to make a decision. Unfortunately most of these tirades left many citizens believing Linda Olson does not do the work necessary to make an informed decision. Rita Russell’s willingness to admit there are problems and issues facing Englewood provides the first step to creating solutions. Russell has been vocal about her fear that City Council is spending Englewood into serious problems. Council overstates the reserves by including pension fund monies as part of the city’s reserve fund. ECOG shares the concern that you can’t tell people we have all this money in savings, when it is already committed to paying our employee pensions. Russell seems to be economically grounded dismissing Olson’s claim that government accounting is “different than balancing your checkbook.” Spending more than you take in is an irresponsible policy for anyone. In real world accounting, Englewood has accumulated a $7 million deficit over the last 4 years. Russell wants to focus on controlling expenses, keeping our commitments to our employees, without increasing property taxes as Olson believes is necessary. The violation of the City Charter was the deciding issue that made Russell run for City Council. “I went to a Council meeting and saw for myself the lack of leadership, disrespect for citizens, and blatant disregard for our City Charter and knew I could do a better job of representing Dist 2,” said Russell. Theatre Threads a smash hit costume runway show

By Glory Weisberg heatre Threads, “A Costume Runway Show,” filled the Seawell Ballroom with live theater lovers and it was one of the most entertaining benefits in this year. So in keeping with the concept, members of the public get to pay $100 per person to model costumes in the Denver Center’s vast costume closet. This event has become so popular that more people want to join the fashion ramp than there are spaces for models. Among the 2013 cast: Jeremy Anderson, Jamie Angelich, Fiona Baldwin, Murri Bishop, Keri Christiansen, Sharon Cooper, BJ Dyer, Terri Fisher, Adrienne Ruston Fitzgibbons, Alice Foster, Roger Hutson, Carmel Koelzow, Gayle Novak, Stacy Ohlsson, Loretta Robinson, Jackie Rotole, Robyn Taylor and Judi Wolf. Denise Bellucci and John Farnam chaired the mega-successful luncheon that enables more than 50,000 local students to experience the excitement of live theater each year. Live local theater is expensive. One of the Denver Center’s productions, A Christmas Carol, had 131 costume and wig changes for its 37 cast members. In an average season, as many as 400 costumes are created and the costume shop has made more than 10,000 costumes since opening night for the DCTC in 1979. Loretta Robinson in a costume Janet MacLeod and Kevin Cofrom the show, 1001 penhaver are on the DCTC costume and wardrobe staff and through Murri the generosity of Margot Gilbert Frank, the costume department Bishop in staff got to enjoy Theatre Threads at a costume their own table. from A Christmas gloryweisberg@comcast.net Carol

TKM Foundation Fall Celebration helps students

The T. Kevin McNicholas Foundation had its Fall Celebration last week at the McNichols Civic Center Building where about 200 guests sipped and supped with samples from Café Rendezvous, an eatery inside the Colorado History Center. The walkabout fare included quail egg hash browns, lobster pot pie, a custard station and outside the building a Craft food truck, doling out mini-donuts and coffee. It is just one of the Kevin and Mary McNicholas family’s KMSSA sites, now up to more than 40 concessions across the U.S., having started at the Denver Zoo. What a remarkably dedicated family these Cherry Hills Villagers are. Their foundation is focusing on education needs of students, aiming to get them to remain in high school, graduate to trade schools, colleges and universities locally and throughout the region. Toward that end, they award scholarships, offer mentoring and job placements and early education backing ethical leadership values.

There are 10 institutions benefiting from the foundation at this date: Regis Jesuit High School, the Colorado Restaurant Association Education Foundation, Colorado ProStart, Arrupe Jesuit High School, Johnson & Wales University, The College of St. Benedict’s, The Women’s Bean Project, Machebeuf High School, Escuela Tlatlolco School and the Mullen High School Heroic Vow Campaign. Among guests were David and Lynn Wong, Liz Frawley, Murri and Andy Bishop, Mike and Maureen Hendricks, Dr. Shawn and Julie Maloy, Karen and Jeff Wetzel, Tom and Tish Wick, Todd Langfield, Dr. Tim and Jane Masterson, Tim and Alison Brantley, Ron and Suzanne Hall, Kara Johnston, Grace Keleher, Summer Mann, Mark and Ellen Kiniry, and Nancy Koontz. Information on the TKM Foundation is at www.tkm foundation.org or by calling 303322-3031.

Women’s Foundation Luncheon attracts 2,000 people

T

By Glory Weisberg he Women’s Foundation “Raise Your Voices” Luncheon drew 2,000 people to its 21st edition and it ran like clockwork. The program was so exciting you could hear a pin drop throughout the agenda. Wasting no time on tablemate conversation, the one course lunch was served as soon as everyone was seated and the program began right then, an excellent way to respect everyone’s time, an example for other nonprofits to follow. This edition had the most corporate sponsors and revenue in those more than two decades. Credit Women’s Foundation President and CEO Louise Atkinson and her chairs Navantara Ghosh, Carolyn Jefferson-Jenkins and Sandy Stein. If you remember the TV show Ugly Betty, you know the name of its star, America Ferrera, who was luncheon keynote speaker. Drawing from her experiences growing up as one of six children born to a single mother in Honduras, Ferrera was an example of what American women can achieve right here in Colorado. “I don’t see my story as a fairytale. I believe every young person should be free to dream a big dream to receive a terrific education,” Ferrera said. “You are what you care about. Remember that all the diamonds on the red carpet are just borrowed.” She explained how her dream as a child was to be a movie star, a dream come true as she’s also known now as the star of the movie, Real Women Have Curves. The day’s theme was Changing Young Women’s Lives and to that point, Gov. John Hickenlooper noted that in Colorado 6,000 girls drop out of school and 500,000 women live in or near the poverty level. “In the U.S., only 4 percent of Fortune 500 companies have a female CEO,” he noted, but here in Colorado 40 percent of the state legislature is made up of women, the highest percentage in the U.S. Colleen Dougherty and Elaine Torres were corporate chairs. John Ikard, president and CEO of FirstBank, was presenting sponsor and Patrick Gaston, president of the Western Union Foundation, offered to match funds generated at the luncheon. Since 1987 the Women’s Foundation has invested more than $10.2 million with hundreds of agencies across Colorado, focusing on lifting women out of poverty, keeping girls in school and encouraging girls to enter careers in the science, technology, engineering and math fields. The Women’s Foundation began 26 years ago in the dank basement of a church in Capitol Hill and we were right there to witness it all. Little did any of a few founding women dream that in 2013 the foundation would have a nearly $19 million endowment. Visit www.wfco.org for information. gloryweisberg@comcast.net

A Day of Service for St. Mary’s Academy High School

Submitted by SMA A tenet of a Loretto school is service. One major demonstration of this commitment at St. Mary’s Academy is the Community Service Day in the high school. On Oct. 11, the entire high school student body, along with the teachers, spent the day working for others. Loretto teaches: “We learn from those to whom we are sent.” Indeed, SMA lives that statement on Community Service Day and beyond, starting in pre-kindergarten. This ethos of St. Mary’s Academy is part of the fabric of the students’ lives, reflected in the high school students easily accumulating more than 120 hours of service during their four years of high school. Each fall, SMA high school students dedicate a day of service to two dozen nonprofit organizations in the Denver metro area. Most of the programs are those where the girls have long-established relationships with the volunteer managers who look forward to the group donating their time, compassion and grace to those in need. This year’s organizations included

Through your support, you are opening the world to a lot of kids.”

The pack animals of Llamas Colorado graze just off Belleview, west of the high rise buildings of the DTC. Photos by Jan Wondra

Keeping them down on the farm in Greenwood Village By Jan Wondra You may see them as you drive east or west on Belleview Avenue. These woolly animals with long sturdy legs, graceful necks and perky ears, their wide, expressive eyes outlined with impossibly long lashes, inquisitively nose over the fencing along 5950 S. Belleview. You’ve officially passed 5500 S. Forest Lane, the Greenwood Village headquarters of Llamas Colorado. This is the 10-acre home of a pack animal training ground and rental business that, according to owner and trainer John Myers, “saved my back and knees for as many

years of mountain climbing and backpacking years as I can get in.” The business is an unlikely one for Myers, a medical doctor who grew up in the San Luis Valley. But spend any amount of time with the man, and you’ll find that he balances life between medicine and his love of the Colorado outdoors, which led him to his second health-related venture: his llamas. “These fellows are smart, gentle and sturdy,” he says of the animals he has both rescued and raised. “Teach them something once, and they’ve got it. I’ve even trained them to jump into a four-

wheel drive truck, which makes it easy to move them to a trailhead. They’re a sweet mix of pack animal and intelligence.” Myers began the unlikely venture called Llamas Colorado about 10 years ago, after he and his group of hiking buddies realized that their backpacking days, and the length of their trips, might be numbered. “I said, ‘Guys, we’ve got to find a better way. We can’t lug in 10 days worth of supplies on our backs anymore,’” Myers said. Myers clearly admires the animals, which he rents out as pack animals for hunting, fishing and backpacking trips, as well as trains them to sell. He often works with the Department of Wildlife, his pack animals supporting crews, which do things like hike into remote ponds to check on Rio Grand cutthroat fish populations. “These guys are natural athletes,” he says of his llamas. “They like to work; like kids, they need to work. They can easily carry 80 pounds of equipment and supplies for 10-day trips...100 pounds at a time for shorter trips...and climb extremely difficult terrain. When you set up high camp, you can stake them out while you do day climbs and summits, and they’ll happily stay put.” The Greenwood Village operation includes land in Frisco

and coordination with a 35acre breeding location out in Elizabeth. Myers has worked carefully with the Deptartment of Natural Resources to set up the Greenwood Village grazing pastures for his avocation. “I keep the boys, here,” he said. “We didn’t want to over graze, so we had to get the grazing grasses right and set up a grazing rotation. Llamas aren’t like sheep. They don’t graze all the grass off and they don’t eat alfalfa, so we had to shift to plants they do eat which can hold up. When they’re not on pasture, I’ve just gotten some great hay grasses from the Blue River area and they love that.” The Llamas Colorado operation has served another purpose for Myers. “I used to do medical school interviews here. I’d take the young people out here to interview them, see how they behaved around the llamas, hand them a bucket. You can tell a lot about the work ethic of a person by putting them on the land,” he said. Most people don’t realize that llamas are actually Colorado natives. “The bones of the original ancestors of today’s llamas have been found in major digs here in Colorado,” said Myers. “They were called Camelides. They were pushed south by the last

ice age into the Andes of South America, but they belong here.” When asked about the obviously luxurious llama wool coats of all colors, he chuckles. “We clean them and shear it every spring. It gets so long it can reach the ground,” said Myers. “But I can shear a llama in about 20 minutes. You probably shouldn’t tell people this, but I usually give it away. It makes wonderful yarn and really soft and warm sweaters.” Greenwood Village City Councilman Jerry Presley said, “The site of the gentle llamas grazing on the pastures next to Belleview is a delight for many daily commuters. I just love seeing them with their heads over the fences, or kicking up their heels in the pasture. They remind me that life needs balance; that we can’t spend it all looking down. Local movie explores love, ambition and music

‘The One Who Loves You’ to play Denver Film Festival

By Peter Jones When Katharyn Grant jumps into the role of wide-eyed singer Gloria Bethune, there is a reason the actress-director is so convincing. “There is an element of me that is like Gloria, but I’m probably more of a cynic,” the Colorado filmmaker said with a smile. “You come from your understanding of a role. You find the place where you connect with the character. It was very cathartic.” In Grant’s new film, The One Who Loves You, Gloria is a green, if

well-intentioned, songstress whose emotional vulnerability rivals her talent. When she falls under the spell of a smooth-talking would-be manager named Roy, the audience may want to slap her around and talk some sense into the fledgling singer. “She’s gullible because she wants her dream so much and she’s been so disappointed,” Grant said in an earnest tone reminiscent of her character. “So when somebody believes in her, it means so much to her. For all Roy’s fakery, there is something real there. They do connect. He fakes it from the heart.” Although Grant would hope not to trust her own movie career to the hands of a subpar Svengali, she knows that dreaming comes before

the brass ring. “Making a film, you have to have the same dogged determination and naïve faith that it can happen,” she said. “As a young person trying to be an actor, I was Gloria, but my happy ending is that I made this movie.” The One Who Loves You will have its Colorado premier Nov. 1112 at the Starz Denver Film Festival at the United Artists at Denver Pavilions. Grant and other members of the cast and crew will introduce the

movie and answer questions. The 95-minute film, a longawaited labor of love, was shot between 2009 and 2012 at locations ranging from south metro Denver and Arapahoe County near Denver International Airport to Wheat Ridge, Golden and Longmont. Because The One Who Loves You is set in the early 1970s, Grant, who also directed, took the production to the old Elitch Gardens, the Mayan Theater and the distinctively dated Davies’ Chuck Wagon Diner on West Colfax Avenue, among a host of other aging locations. Adding challenge upon challenge was screenwriter Beaty Reynolds’s Southern setting. Although the film’s budget kept the cast in Colorado, the co-producers, including cinematographer Chris Graves, were painstaking in their attention to period detail, taking weeks to find the right cars, rotary telephones or polyester outfits for Gloria’s guileless aspirations. Some scenes were reshot or cut when anachronistic details were spotted in the background. Such period-centricity is rare for lower-budget independent moviemaking, a branch of film for which any port in the storm – whatever its vintage – is often good enough. “Most people are not crazy,” Graves said. “We were quite determined and crazy. It’s a little like entrepreneurship, in general. It takes a

certain amount of ignorance. You go into it not knowing how difficult it’s going to be. It’s like putting together a puzzle, but you have to find the pieces.” Not surprisingly, the resourceful crew managed to accumulate a broad range of ‘70s kitsch, picking up the odd item at garage sales and flea markets. “You’d see the ugliest stuff – and say, ‘that is great,’” Grant said. The tackiness was a perfect backdrop for Roy Hutchins (Briel DiCristofaro), whose cheesy claims of having managed a famous country singer are enough to keep Gloria’s head in the clouds. Despite the challenges, Grant was determined to keep the countrytinged story of ambition gone awry in the decade in which she was born. “I always wanted to make a film set in the ‘70s,” she said. “There’s something mythic about that time period. Now everybody’s on a cellphone and the music industry is corporate. It just seemed like a simpler time. Roy’s not a very good conman, and in this day and age maybe he couldn’t get away with it.” “Today, Gloria would Google him,” Graves added with a laugh.

‘The Book of Mormon’ keeps the faith Hit musical preaches to the irreverent choir

Denver Film Festival rolls out the red carpet By Peter Jones “Paint the Town Red” is the theme of the 36th Starz Denver Film Festival, which opens Nov. 6 with Labor Day directed by Jason Reitman and starring Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet. Alexander Payne’s road trip “dramedy” Nebraska, will be center stage for Big Night on Nov. 9. August: Osage County, directed by John Wells, will anchor the newest red-carpet presentation, Centerpiece, on Nov. 15. The inaugural 2012 George Hickenlooper Award recipient, actor Andy Garcia, returns with his latest At Middleton, which closes

the festival on Nov. 16. “With nearly 200 titles, a 10film focus on the Netherlands, an impressive array of locally produced work and a year-end survey of 2013’s best festival films, [the festival] is shaping up to be one of the strongest in years,” Artistic Director Brit Withey said. The festival will presents a full 12-day program, including international and independent films, industry panels, workshops, achievement awards and tributes. Tickets are available at www. denverfilm.org or at the Sie Film Center, 2510 E. Colfax Ave.

By Peter Jones Everything you have heard about The Book of Mormon is true. The musical is politically incorrect, hilarious, sacrilegious, touching and offensive. And while you won’t be singing the chorus to Spooky Mormon Hell Dream on your way out of the theater, the music has its own fleeting charm. As most know, The Book of Mormon is a fish-out-of-water tale with book and music by Colorado’s South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The Broadway hit sees two naive missionaries travel to a remote village in Uganda, only to find that smiling proselytization is no match for famine, AIDS and tribal violence. The two are also no match for each other. Elder Price, ambitious and self-absorbed, thinks his handsome missionary prowess would be better suited to the heathens of Orlando, Fla. Elder Cunningham, a well-meaning and insecure nerd, has never even bothered to read the text for which this musical is named. For months, the missionaries have had no luck converting even a single native. But by virtue of sheer incompetence and Cunningham’s propensity to stretch the truth, one group of unlikely village converts is soon longing for a latter day in “Sal Tlay Ka Siti” (read: Salt Lake City).

Nic Rouleau stars as Elder Price in The Book of Mormon. The irreverent musical comedy is at the Buell Theater through Nov. 24.

The Tony-winning mix of song, dance and vulgarity has something for everyone – to offend them, that is. And yes, even regular theatergoers may expect more for their money after all the insurmountable hype surrounding The Book of Mormon. In any case, those who share the Parker-Stone brand of iconoclasm will embrace every moment of this irreverent – yet ultimately, heart-filled – musical comedy. Response from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been refreshingly understated. Some Mormon bloggers have expressed pleasant surprise at the

play’s relative empathy and arguable lack of mean-spiritedness. Mormon scholar Richard Bushman said when church members see the show, it is “like looking at themselves in a funhouse mirror.” In some cities, including Denver, the LDS Church has taken out full-page advertising to encourage theater patrons to learn more about The Book of Mormon, arguing, “The book is always better.” LDS theology gets no shortage of doctrinal ribbing in the show’s two hours. Occasional flashbacks show church founder Joseph Smith joining in fun-filled play with Mormon angel Moroni. The song I Believe hilariously ventures to condense an entire belief system into several minutes of earnest declaration. “I believe that the Garden of Eden was in Jackson County, Missouri …” The bright side to all the buildup surrounding The Book of Mormon is that anyone who goes to see it has a very good idea what they are in for. For good or bad, you knew before reading this if the musical is your cup of theater. Trust your gut.
