The risk can run from 10 percent for usage or up to a 50 percent risk for the stronger dosages. They can also cause stomach bleeding, so just be careful of what and how many of these little pills one takes. They don’t say anything about coffee consumption, and every casino has an abundance of complimentary coffee to warm our minds, bodies and hearts. The verdict is uncertain about coffee, whether it is good or bad for one’s health, but drinking it for more than 50 years, I have seen no harmful side effects. It is wise for calorie consumption to leave out the cream and sugar and learn to like the real flavor of the natural coffee beans. Columbus Day still inspires controversy Colorado was the first to make Columbus Day a state holiday

Over the past few years, controversy over Columbus Day in the United States has escalated to the point where some cities and even states have changed the name of the holiday to Indigenous People Day. Perhaps the most ignored holiday on the calendar, when it is noticed at all, Columbus Day nevertheless inspires mixed feelings. Many of us who grew up in less enlightened times still have nostalgic memories about the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria and sailing across the ocean blue with Columbus in 1492. Others, not so much. Granted, Columbus is hardly an appropriate role model for children. Yes, he was a man of his times, but that’s hardly an excuse. He took hundreds of slaves, tortured and murdered natives and stole their gold. Even his followers hated him. When he finally reached the mainland on his third voyage (he first landed in the Bahamas and never set foot in the United States) he built a settlement in what is today Venezuela. After vigorous protests by his own colonists, the Crown sent him back to Spain in chains, taking away his authority, titles and a large chunk of pilfered loot. Although he regained some of his wealth, his honors were never

restored. Even so, the holiday really has little to do with the man himself. Before the 1920s, a feminized Columbia was a symbol of U.S. independence and freedom from foreign rule, an answer to Great Britain’s Britannica. Many states have cities named Columbus, and the U.S. capital is the District of Columbia. Although some critics might maintain that Columbus set a precedent, making him an appropriate American icon, the explorer has been a part of our national heritage since the beginning. As early as 1792, New York City held the first official Columbus Day Parade. At the request of prominent Italian-Americans, F.D.R. declared Columbus Day a national holiday in 1937 and Nixon created a federal holiday in 1971 Italian American immigrants, whose assimilation into this country was never smooth, saw Columbus as an inspiration. More than 5.3 million followed him to the New World before

Columbus “discovering” the New World, a popular image that has been debunked by revisionist historians. 1978, most of them between 1900 and 1920. When Italy became a nation in 1870, a mass exodus from the southern regions followed. As northern Italy became the center of government, implementing laws favoring northern economic expansion, heavy burdens were placed on the agricultural south. In one of history’s greatest migrations, the country’s population was reduced by one-third as emigrants scattered around the globe, most of them to North and South America. In Colorado, the first Italians in

the region were Charles and Antonio Garbarino, two brothers from Genoa who joined an 1859 caravan of goldseekers and later settled in Golden and Georgetown. In 1872, Sicilian sulfur miners began moving into the gold camps of Central City, Black Hawk and Georgetown, and a decade later into the coalfields of northern and southern Colorado. Between 1880 and 1895, thousands came west to work on the railroads, the vast majority unskilled laborers from the provinces of Calabria, Sicily and Basilica. Some entered the country under the infamous “padrone” system and became virtual slaves to their sponsors. Nearly one in four immigrants eventually returned to Italy, while some spent the rest of their lives in the United States without ever learning to speak English. Although many immigrants strayed no further west than Chicago, a large contingent moved west, where they were more easily accepted since just about everyone was a newcomer. In Colorado, miners imported as cheap, disposable labor became a threat when they began organizing for an eight hour workday and safer working conditions. Italians figured prominently in the state’s bitter labor wars during the early part of the Twentieth Century. By 1910, 40,000 Italians represented nearly 14 percent of Colorado’s population, making them the largest foreign-born group next to the Germans. Many worked in the steel mills of Pueblo, where in 1907, the first Columbus Day Parade in the nation was held. That same year, Colorado became the first state to make Columbus Day a legal holiday. In Denver, truck farmers originally

settled in the South Platte River Bottoms, then in North Denver and Highlands. Farmers disposed of their fresh fruits and vegetables at the City market, located on the banks of Cherry Creek between Arapahoe and Welton streets. North Denver was known as “Little Italy” until the 1940s, when the community began to disburse. The first Italian Denverites were Maria and Angelo Capelli, northern Italians who operated a saloon and boarding house known as the Highland House at 15th and Platte. When Colorado officially instituted Columbus Day, Denver Italian-Americans staged a gala celebration organized by the Capellis. The city’s Columbus Day dispute dates back to 1990, when the Federation of Italian American Organizations announced plans to revive the march after three decades. Following protests by members of the American Indian Movement of Colorado in 1991, the parade was cancelled until 2000. Over the last 15 years, demonstrations (most of them peaceful) have varied in intensity. In 2007, police arrested 83 Columbus Day Parade protesters, including American Indian Movement activist Russell Means, after fake blood and dismembered baby dolls were poured along the parade route. Subsequent protests have been more peaceful. This year’s parade starts on Oct. 10 at 10 a.m., with several hundred marchers expected to participate. Floats, bands and dancing groups gather to celebrate what has been called ‘the highlight of Colorado Italian Heritage Month.” Perhaps the controversy would be diffused if it was renamed the Italian Heritage Parade.

The fire agate seems to glow inside like an opal. The fire agate is found mostly in the American Southwest and Mexico.
