Let’s Play Poker! “Thanks for the memories” Lodge Poker Room

In early September of this year the ionic poker room located upstairs at the Lodge Casino dealt its last hand. With an impending remodel of the casino and the promised draw of more revenue from slot machines, the legendary and well-known poker room is no more. After millions of poker hands dealt; after millions of dollars being paid out in bad beat jackpots; after uncountable players learning their first hard lessons at the tables; after many large tournaments; after many dealers across town cutting their teeth dealing in the room for the first time; and after many lasting friendships being made - the room is now a just a memory. But what a GREAT MEMORY! The Lodge Poker Room and its decades long run offering poker games to any and all comers is really the story of the poker industry growing up in Colorado. Remember poker in the early

poker talk

BY LARRY JOHNSON

2000’s when TV first made it popular? The Lodge Poker Room was the place to be. It was loud; full of excited new players lining up at the rail; and the play was absolutely wild. WHOO HOO! First and foremost - a big pat on the back to Jess Kaufmann / the final Poker Room Manager of the room. He kept the room going for the past few years by drawing a strong crowd of local players and his dealers really made it a very unique and fun place to play - thank you Jess and team! Here are a few of my memories of the poker room at the Lodge Casino: 1. I was playing cards up the hill

in Central City at a now closed poker room and a fellow player named J.R. took me in down the hill to a new place called the Lodge Casino with a few tables upstairs. We jumped into the game, were welcomed as old time friends, and I played the next 10 years or more in the room. This is also one of the first times I met well-known local poker ambassador Jamal S. - he ran the room in the early days. 2. One night while playing in a 5 - 5 Poker Game, a player at the next table punched a player next to him. Before I could think of reacting, dealer Dick Y. leaped across the table and tackled the guy. I found out later Dick Y. was a World Champion in a type of martial arts - it goes to show you never know who is sitting next to you at a poker table. 3. Of course the night of July 2, 2009. This was the night the

limits were raised to $100 and at 12:01 a.m. we had the first legal $10 - $20 Hold em poker game in Colorado since the last century. Champagne flowed; the tables were packed; and everyone was ecstatic. In those days the room had 22 poker tables that were busy day and night. 4. One Saturday night we had a very unique mix in a game toward the back of the room. Big John was there; a couple ladies who were fun to play with; and some others. We started doing kamikaze shots and soon we were all feeling good and having a great time. This went on for five or six hours with the same group of folks and it was some of the most fun I have ever had at a table. We ended up getting rooms (separate of course), playing till dawn, and having breakfast together. End result - I won $68 and slept for two days when we were done. 5. A few other random memories:

Long-time dealer Donna had the best card pitch to the number one seat I have ever seen - she would give it too you underhanded with a flourish like Tom Cruise in the movie Cocktail. And - the Chile! Do you remember the big pot of simmering Chile the room would have on the back counter all day and night? Hmmmm - I remember that chili got me through many long sessions. So while the poker room at the Lodge Casino and its team of fine dealers is no longer dealing out the cards - don’t be sad. The dealers are moving to other poker rooms; poker room manager Jess Kaufmann will now be playing more locally; and there are plenty of memories to be made playing in the other rooms around town. As Jimmy Fallon of the Tonight Show would say, “Thank you to the Lodge Casino Poker Room - thank you for taking my money with a smile; thank you for providing free shots when I needed them; and thank you for the memories!” Remember - play your game!

Thinking about poker: financing someone else’s game

I recently returned from a trip down south (“’Way down south in Dixie’”) and happened to observe two interactions between poker players. These prompted thought about poker and of behavior in which poker players either willfully engage and/or allow to occur. Before detailing these – the first in this article, the second next issue – I recommend a poker stop for any of you on the road looking for a night’s respite and a good game. The Grand Hotel and Casino in Shawnee, Okla. is a venue to which I will happily return. On the fringes of Oklahoma City, the hotel is a well-kept, hospitable stay which on top of having good dining facilities and other amenities such as spa services, occasionally hosts concerts either by up-andcoming artists (usually country

PAGE 4

music as this locality is where Garth Brooks had his start) or those who have had their day of fame. To make matters more attractive to those who eschew the machines to play poker, there is a quiet poker room where I found $1 - $2 no-limit hold-em, $3 $6 limit hold-em and a pot-limit Omaha game, all going simultaneously. The first instance of questionable poker behavior observed was when one player (and from what little I had seen of his play, not a good one) in essence hounded another to borrow money to rebuy into the no-limit game. He badgered, pleaded, cajoled and yes, outright begged the other – who was in a game and playing – to ‘loan’ him cash. I could tell these two knew each other for some time, most likely at the tables but possibly out there in the world, as the beggar’s most common argument was “C’mon, you know I’m

good for it!” It was blatantly obvious the beggee did not want to fund his ‘friend’s’ game and kept putting him off. Finally – probably out of desperation to get this guy to leave – he peeled off a Cnote and handed it to the beggar with the admonition “You can pay me back when you see me again.” We all have been placed in this uncomfortable position by players who think their luck will change by the infusion of ‘new money’; mostly it prolongs the downward spiral of the loser who, trying to recoup his losses plays fast and loose and then departs not long after busted out and owing his benefactor. I put the word loaned in air quotes as this usually is the beginning of a downward spiral to their ‘friendship’ and the one who loaned the money will never see his ‘friend’ or his money again. How does this make you feel when, out of the goodness of your heart and willing to help a ‘friend’, you do lend the money? Most often the borrower will then go for a long time, ‘forgetting’ the amount borrowed, how long ago it was

borrowed, who lent it or the fact that it was your generosity that got them the money in the first place. When they next see you they will have enough to buy into the game but not enough to pay you back. They will begin avoiding you whenever you meet and the resentment – in the borrower that he owes you and in you that your ‘friend’ has made zero effort in repaying your kindness – distresses and ultimately destroys the relationship. There is an old saying perhaps from Aesop, Ben Franklin or Jimmy the Greek: “Never a borrower nor a lender be.” What this means is, to put it bluntly, is never ask to borrow money and never loan money. I qualify this to add ‘at the poker tables’ because we have all lent money to true friends, relatives and others. If we have ever purchased a house, car or largeticket item we have gone into debt big-time to purchase that item. But consider the ton of paperwork accompanying it; a tree dies for all of that and everything from term, interest and payoff options are ex-

THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 25 Years

cruciatingly spelled out in the best and tightest lawyer-ese around. Do you really want to hand your ‘friend’ a hundred and then ask him to sign an IOU? If they really are a friend they will make every effort to pay you back quickly; if they are a mooch you’ll never see the money again. So which are they? A phrase I found useful when being asked for a ‘loan’ is the following: “Sorry, its policy that I never borrow nor do I ever lend money. You have to understand that, right? It’s just policy.” If they are really a friend they will understand what you are saying. If they pester you further, they indeed are not a true friend and a stronger “No, I can’t do that. It’s policy!” will turn them away. You play sensibly (I trust) within the limits of your own bankroll; you are helping that person – albeit with ‘tough love’ – to stay within the limits of theirs. They will be disappointed for the time being but they will respect you and your stance. You are thinking about more than just poker.

Going Green

Avoiding food waste is green

When America’s thrifty “green” pioneers butchered a pig, they made use of everything but the squeal. No food from the pig was wasted. To make our earth more sustainable today, we should learn to not waste food. Over 40% of the food in the U.S. goes to waste, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization, which results in over 1.3 billion tons of food ending up in landfills every single year. Avoiding food waste is going green because it saves the energy, water and natural resources used to grow, package, and transport it to landfills which results in more greenhouse gases. How do we do avoid food waste?

hundreds of years to decompose, and it poses a danger to the water table once it’s in a landfill. Third, learn how to recycle food. We should plan our meals for several days ahead as this is probably the

First, we should learn to store foods safely. After a meal, cooked foods should be allowed to cool to room temperature and placed in covered glass, metal, and ceramic containers. It should be refrigerated immediately. It should be frozen or consumed within two or three days. Frozen leftovers can be used to create another dish later. Meat bones can frozen and later boiled for stocks for delicious soups. Second, avoid storing food in plastic containers as these containers can leach harmful toxins into food. Plastic releases chemicals such as benzene and dioxin into the air during the manufacturing process. Plastic takes

most foolproof method of making sure food gets used during its safe-storage time. A pot roast or whole baked chicken can be recycled many ways into casseroles or sandwiches. “Planned overs” can supply a second meal so technically this second meal isn’t considered “leftovers”. Instead think of any food remaining

after a meal as an ingredient for a future dish with a new name. Try preparing leftovers with an ethnic Italian, Mexican or Asian twist.

More tips to avoid food waste

Take a sealable non-plastic container for leftovers to restaurants if you’re unable to finish what you ordered. This is a simple way to avoid using Styrofoam cartons which go into landfills. I bring home extra rice after a Chinese meal to make rice pudding. Only buy enough produce to use within a few days because fresh produce can go bad quickly. However, you can sauté small amounts of leftover fresh vegetables from a relish tray with leftover meats to make a stir fry. Combine leftovers with fresh foods and other staple ingredients to make different dishes. Use leftover macaroni and cheese to add

substance to soup, as a topping for a casserole, or combine with scrambled eggs for a breakfast burrito. Leftover cooked oatmeal tastes even better the second time around when added to homemade breads, pancake or muffin batter, cookies or cakes. Crush leftover bits of dry cereal and use them to make oven-fried chicken, a casserole topping, or added crunchiness in meatloaf. Stale bread can be used to make croutons, french toast or bread pudding. Transform mashed potatoes into a topping for meat loaf or mix with beaten eggs for potato cakes. Put leftover scalloped potatoes into a pot pie or make potato soup. Marinate cooked vegetables in french dressing and use in salads or mix them with leftover meats to fill omelets. For a sandwich spread, place turkey or ham pieces in a blender with mayonnaise and pickle juice.

Historic Saint Joseph Hospital

M

other Xavier Ross of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, Kansas, sent four Sisters to the Colorado Territory to begin a hospital. She gave them nine dollars and the challenge: “Look forward for what good there is yet to be.” In 1873, Sister Joanna Bruner, along with Sisters Clare Bergen, The odora McDonald and Veronica O’Hara, arrived in Denver. Under the direction of Sister Joanna Bruner, a professional nurse, the sisters looked for a suitable building to establish their hospital. It didn’t take long. Mrs. William Perry, a native of Leavenworth, donated a small brick home she owned to the Sisters. Located at 1421 Arapahoe Street, it was across the street from today’s Denver Center for the Performing Arts. On September 14, 1873, the Sisters took possession of the house and spent the next week cleaning and remodeling the six rooms into a small hospital. On September 22, 1873, the Sisters opened St. Vincent’s Hospital. Bishop Joseph Machebeuf published an announcement in the Rocky Mountain News: “The Sisters of Charity are now ready to receive patients without any distinction of nationality or creed.” Evidently owner and publisher of the Rocky Mountain News, William N. Byers, took exception to the new hospital. For the next few months, Byers ran editorials against the hospital, and the Sisters of Charity responded with letters to the editor. Finally the Sisters seemed to have ended the war of words when they wrote a declaration of sorts which Byers actually printed: “You will be kind enough we hope to allow us to take exception to the manner in which claims of our hospital for public support are referred to in your paper by representing it as a denominational or sectarian institution. We do not expect public support for our institution on denominational grounds but on the plea of universal charity. Our institute is for all the sick, wounded and destitute.” Despite the war of words in the Denver newspapers, by October of the following year the six-room hosNovember 1 - 14, 2016

pital was too small for the growing health care institution. The Sisters moved their facility to a brick building at 26th and Holladay streets, later renamed Market Street. Because this area included Denver’s red light district, several people questioned the decision to relocate the hospital to such a neighborhood. Sister Joanna Bruner replied, “We’ll take the question out of the neighborhood.” Evidently the Sisters were not able to overcome the reputation of the neighborhood. By the end of that year the Sisters moved their hospital again, to the former Pacific House Hotel at the corner of Blake and 22nd streets, the site of today’s Coors Field. The Sisters paid $80 a month in rent for the next two years. During that time, the Sisters held fund raisers and received donations for the establishment of a new hospital. Construction began at 18th and Humboldt streets on land donated by Territorial Governor William Gilpin. Under the supervision of Sister Mary

Ignatia Nealon, the three-story brick building, with operating rooms and a 30-bed private care facility, opened in 1876. The Sisters of Charity renamed their hospital Saint Joseph Hospital. Sister Benedicta Maloney, serving as hospital administer, recruited Denver’s well-known physicians Dr. Frederick J. Bancroft and Dr. Augustus L. Justice. For the next 140 years, the historic heath care institution served the Denver community with the best care and state-of-the art technology. Extensive equipment was installed during the ensuing years, including a brass sterilizing machine, reputed to be the first of its size west of the Mississippi River. New X-ray equipment was also added, a remarkable accomplishment as the procedure was relatively new, having been invented in 1895. In early 1899, the Sisters began a donation drive across the city to raise funds for an expansion of the hospital. The March 22, 1899, issue of the Denver Times ran the following edi-

torial regarding the efforts of the Sisters of Charity: “The success of the hospital and its rapid growth is due in large measure to the non-sectarian character of the charity, to the high efficiency of the medical staff, and the keen interest which the Sisters take in the work to which they have devoted their lives.” Led by flour baron John K. Mullen and his wife, Catherine Smith Mullen, several fund raising events were held throughout the city. Mrs. Catherine Mullen organized “The Women’s Social Bazaar.” Others who joined her cause were the wives of other prominent Denver businessmen, including Edith Daniels (Daniels & Fishers Department Store,) Frances Thatcher (Denver National Bank,) and Nellie Campion, (Leadville silver mines owner.) It was an impressive event, held from May 12 through May 20, 1899, at Denver’s Coliseum Hall. This was followed by their “Monster Progressive Euchre Card Party.” This event,

organized by Mrs. Margaret (Molly) Brown, was held at the Denver Armory on June 22, 1899, with over 1,500 people attending. The combination of these events raised over 10,000 dollars for the hospital. In 1900, the new addition of the Saint Joseph Hospital was completed. Constructed adjacent to the hospital, at 1835 Franklin Street, the new building featured twin towers. In January 1998, Saint Joseph Hospital joined Lutheran Medical Center and Exempla Medical Group to form Exempla Healthcare, a notfor-profit, community-based organization. Saint Joseph Hospital moved again in 2014 when it merged with National Jewish Health. The new facility, located at East 18th Avenue and Lafayette Street, cost a cool $623 million. A far cry from the money collected by fund raisers a hundred years ago. Nevertheless, the modern health care facility continues the mission and legacy of the Sisters of Charity. PAGE 17

That’s what I would have told my professor when I dozed off in his economics class. 5) Believe in yourself. According to the Harvard Health Beat Blog, older learners do worse on memory tasks when they’re exposed to negative stereotypes about aging and memory, and better when the messages are positive. When younger people make disrespectful comments about aging, we need to remind them gently that they’ll be older one day too—unless we kill them first. I’m joking! Forget I said that. 6) Repeat it. Experts say when you want to remember something, you should write it down or repeat it out loud. For example, say “I’m putting the grocery list on the counter” or “Tomorrow is trash

day.” I’m no memory expert, but I think you should not only say it, but say it loudly. That way if you still forget, maybe someone who was in earshot at the time can remind you. Likewise, when you’re introduced to someone, repeat the name several times. “It’s nice to meet you, Susan. Isn’t the weather nice, Susan? What do you do for a living Susan?” Meanwhile, look closely at Susan until you begin to associate Susan’s name with her appearance—or until

she says, “My name isn’t Susan.” You may not remember what her name is after that, but you’ll definitely remember what it isn’t. 7) Use memory tricks, if you can remember any. I’m kidding! I know you can. Some examples include: “My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles” is an easy way to remember the planets; RICE reminds us of the treatment for injured limbs (rest, ice, compression and elevation); and WDIPMCK stands for “where did i put my car keys?” (Dorothy Rosby is the author of several humor books, including I Used to Think I Was Not That Bad and Then I Got to Know Me Better.
