Going Green
Pigskin Pick’em
Spread yuletide cheer the green way
The upcoming holidays are a time for joy, peace and goodwill to all, but we are not being good stewards of Mother Earth if we decorate our homes with energy-guzzling lights and dead evergreen trees. Luckily today there are lots of eco-friendly holiday decorations to give yuletide cheer, like energy-saving LED lighting, flameless battery-powered candles, and small twinkling artificial trees. These kinds of green decorations use way less electricity, last longer, and thus save you money. Now they are better looking than ever before! With new warm colors on the market that are lower priced, they can add sparkle to your holiday displays without breaking the bank and look just as festive as more traditional options. Christmas trees are lovely, but there’s no need to cut down a perfectly good tree just to add some holiday cheer to your home. Explore the stores for festive artificial trees that you can use year after year. We purchased a small tree with tiny multi colored lights built into the tree several years ago. One switch every year turns on the blinking light display that uses only minimal electricity. No need to buy a fresh green wreath every year as they can be made of colorful recycled materials, such as twisted colored plastic bags, folded scraps of fabric, or pine cones gathered from beneath pine trees. Check out craft books for ideas on making wreaths. If you want that lovely evergreen smell, you can purchase a small pump spray bottle with a fragrant evergreen scent. Other green decorating ideas: For a centerpiece, attractively arrange different colorful fruits in a beautiful bowl. Then use the fruits for cobblers or salads later. To decorate a windowsill or porch,
make a simple and beautiful lantern with a Mason canning jar. It’s very easy: Place a colored votive candle in the jar. To fashion a handle, twist copper wire to wrap around the lip of the Mason jar. Why not encourage your little ones to use their creativity to make homemade Christmas decorations of various shapes with colorful scented homemade play dough? Handling fruity scented play dough will enhance their motor skills and entice their noses. It smells so good that you most likely will have to warn them not to eat the dough, but if they do it won’t harm them. Here’s an easy recipe for child-pleasing soft and squishy dough.
Scented Colored Play Dough
1 cup flour 1 cup water 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1/2 cup salt 1 teaspoon cream of tartar 2 small packets red or green powdered drink mix Add the ingredients to a saucepan and stir together over medium heat. Continue stirring for another two to three minutes while the dough comes together. Once the dough pulls together into one big ball, turn off the heat and allow the scented play dough to cool in the pan for five minutes. Turn the dough out onto a flour-dusted work surface and knead for one minute or until completely cool. Add additional flour as needed. When the dough is not in use, keep it in a plastic zip bag or tightly lidded container. This dough will stay soft and playable for months if properly stored.

Colorado History

olorado’s military forts have played an important role in both the growth and safety of the citizens long before statehood in 1876. By the 1880s, following the removal of the Native American population to reservations, the U.S. War Department systematically began closing military posts around the state. However, Denver citizens felt a military fort was still needed. Evidently, their petition drive caught the attention of Colorado Senator Henry M. Teller, who, in 1886, introduced a bill in Congress authorizing construction of a permanent military post in Colorado. Teller’s bill passed, allocating $100,000 for construction, and was signed into law by President Grover Cleveland in 1887. Former Civil War Gen. Phil Sheridan selected 640 acres of land located on the banks of Bear Creek, which Sheridan said was a “never-failing stream of pure, clear water.” Originally designated as Fort Sheridan, then far west of Denver, the first soldiers to arrive were those of the 18th Infantry from Fort Hays, Kan. The rapid growth of the railroads westward had made it easier for the Army to quickly move troops where they were needed. At this period in the history of the fort, two railroads served the military instillation. A temporary barracks was erected to house the soldiers during construction. During this period, the name of the fort was changed to Fort Logan by General Order No. 11, issued in August 1888, in honor of Union Army Gen. John A. Logan. It was also during the construction of the new fort that the first death occurred. Army Private Peterkin’s daughter Mable Peterkin died in June 1889. She was buried on the grounds of PAGE 16

Fort Logan on June 28, 1889. That same month, three acres were set aside as a military post cemetery, in the northwest corner of the fort grounds. It was a fortuitous act. In December 1890, six companies from Fort Logan were sent to help stop the Sioux uprising at a place known in history as Wounded Knee. Fort Logan is recognized as the birthplace of the United States Air Force. In 1894, the fort was the base of the Signal Corps Balloon. This balloon was developed for use in Cuba, in observations and scrutiny against the enemy during the Spanish American War. Following the war, Gen. Arthur MacArthur became the commanding officer of Fort Logan from 1901 to 1902. His son, Douglas would go on to serve admirably in World War II. Although an additional 340 acres of land was acquired in 1908, by 1909 Fort Logan was reduced to a recruiting post. Major Dwight D, Eisenhower reported for recruiting duty at Fort Logan in 1924. During World War II, Fort Logan saw a resurgence of military activity. The primary function was as a sub post of Lowry Air Base. During this period, more than 200 buildings, on 973 acres, housed facilities, officers, soldiers and their families.
Following the war, despite the valued support supplied by the Fort Logan soldiers, the fort was officially closed in May 1946. By an act of Congress on March 10, 1950, Fort Logan was designated as a national cemetery and granted an additional 50 acres of land for future burials. As such, Fort Logan National Cemetery became the eighth largest in the country. Since the congressional approval as a national resting place of honor, veteran burials at Fort Logan National Cemetery include many from the Civil War forward, for this is sa-
cred ground reserved for those who fought to keep this country safe and free. From Civil War veterans to those who have died in action during the too many international conflicts, their final resting place is treated with honor and respect. Among the honorable veterans buried at Fort Logan National Cemetery are many Civil War soldiers, including Private John Davis, Company F, 17th Indiana Mounted Infantry. Seven Buffalo Soldiers are also buried here, as well as veterans of the Spanish American war and World War I. Karl Baatz, a German POW who died in 1943, while being held at Fort Logan, during World War, is also interred there. Fort Logan National Cemetery has two Medal of Honor Holders. Major William E. Adams, who served with the U.S. Army, 227th Assault Helicopter Company, 52nd Aviation Battalion, during the Vietnam War. He died in battle on May 25, 1971. First Sgt. Maximo Yabes, U.S. Army, Company A, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, died in the service to his country during the Vietnam War on Feb. 26, 1967. Other notable veteran burials include Robert “Bob” Caron, who was the tail gunner on the Enola Gay on Aug. 5, 1945, when his plane dropped the atomic

bomb over Hiroshima, Japan. It was his camera that captured the image of the mushroom cloud of explosion that flashed around the world. Robert Caron died in June 1995, and was buried with honors in Section 8, Grave 1106. Another veteran of World War II and the Korean War, buried at Fort Logan National Cemetery, is my grandfather, Gordon Carl Hoglund, who died of his injuries in 1963. Veterans of more recent wars honorably buried in the national cemetery include Lance Corporal Thomas Slocum, the first Coloradan to die in combat in Iraq, during Gulf War II. Danny Dietz, on his second deployment to Afghanistan, died in combat on June 28, 2005. The time-honored military burial ceremony of a United States war veteran is one of honor and respect to the fallen soldier. Following the traditional gun tribute, the trumpeted notes of Taps fill the air, and float in the mournful wind. The flag is then folded in militarily regulation; 12 triangular folds, and presented to the family with an honorary salute. The final words said in honor to the honored veteran are: “On behalf of a grateful nation, I present this flag to you in recognition of your (family member?s) years of honest, faithful service to our country. He (she) sacrificed personal freedoms and personal rights to serve a purpose larger than himself. He took an oath to protect the Constitution of the United States. To those of us who serve, the Constitution is more than a piece of paper. It means our family, our friends, our communities, our state, our nation. In a way, it embodies this beautiful land we call Colorado. May God bring you comfort at this time.” On Veterans Day, Fort Logan National Cemetery, along with all Colorado?s cemeteries will be decorated with flowers and flags as we pay our respects to our passed veterans and loved ones. I know I?ll be there, and I hope to see you. God Bless America. November 3 - 16, 2015
Yoga at the Grange
Built by farming communities, these humble structures live on Have you heard of the Grange? At one time in Colorado – and elsewhere in the U.S - wherever there was rural agriculture there was a grange unit and a grange hall. During the Colorado Grange’s first century, 1872-1972, farmers and ranchers organized 492 local granges across the state: out on the plains and prairies, up the mountain canyons and in the high country grazing and ranchlands. Many local units erected buildings that provided a place to hold grange meetings and other activities like educational programs, precinct voting and social gatherings of potluck dinners, dances and holiday parties. The few dozen grange halls that remain today are eloquent reminders of the days when most of Colorado was rural and agriculture dominated. The small, plain buildings are preserved through volunteer efforts and fundraisers; they still function as community centers for a variety of events and activities. Granges were a vital part of farming throughout rural America for more than a century. In 1867, eastern American farmers established the National Grange (formally called the Order of Patrons of Husbandry) to improve economic factors that hindered profitable agriculture. Local granges encouraged co-operative efforts among farmers and ranchers, and they supported elements of country living. The Grange’s motto is plain and simple: “In essentials unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things charity.” Within five years, the Grange Movement had spread to Colorado

Territory. Colorado’s first granges organized 1872-73 at Greeley, Clear Creek Valley (Arvada), Bear Creek, Wheat Ridge, Denver, Lower Boulder, Bergen Park, Ralston (west of Arvada), Littleton and Cherry Creek. The Colorado Territorial Grange was created (soon renamed the Colorado State Grange) in 1874 and 32 more local units were formed that year. Granges played an important role in improving the farm economy and rural life. The National Grange’s first achievement was curbing the railroad’s high freight prices for transporting agricultural products. Soon, the Colorado Grange lobbied to improve farm-to-market roads and to establish and fund a state agricultural college – Colorado State University at Fort Collins. Grange members served on the State Board of Agriculture established by the Colorado legislature in 1872. Granges banded together, using collective bargaining to buy agricultural tools, implements and commodities in volume. Some granges agreed upon fixed sales prices for agricultural goods: the Clear Creek Valley, Littleton and Lower Boulder Granges agreed to sell wheat for no less than two and a half cents per pound and beef for no less than three cents per pound. Local granges helped improve farm families’ economic well being, health and quality of life. One of the first “fraternal” organizations in America to welcome women, the granges also gave them full voice and vote, 50 years before the Nineteenth Amendment finally guaranteed all American women the right to vote in 1919. Granges helped establish free mail delivery in rural areas in the early 1900s, and organized mutual fire insurance and fire insurance for their members. They became important outlets for socializing, for the farm families prone to isolation, hence the
motto “You are never a strange if you are a granger.” Members’ ‘values were underscored by the American flag proudly displayed and the open Bible at each grange meeting. The National grange’s aim was political, as well as economic and social. Farm families gained a voice heard by legislators and corporations. Through the grangers’ lobbying efforts, the Federal Department of Agriculture (FDA) was created, transportation monopolies brought under control and purefood legislation enacted. Grange memberships and influence fluctuated through the twentieth century. They flourished during the ag boom of the 1900s and 1910s, and the number of Colorado grangers peaked at 11,919 in 1919. When Colorado agricultural activity declined in the 1920s and 1930s, so did grange membership. Rail and freight trucking were bringing cheaper produce into the state from California and other industrial agriculture areas. Quite a few grange units closed during the Great Depression and World War II. After the war, granges grew again in Colorado, reaching 12,000 mem-

Post-war growth gave local granges a boost as people moved into rural areas such as the foothills and farmlands of Jefferson, Boulder and El Paso counties. This era also brought consolidation of school districts. Several local granges stepped in to rent or purchase the rural schools vacated by baby-boomer children being bussed to schools in growing towns and cities Since its 1972 centennial, the Colorado Grange has diminished somewhat. Yet, there are still 57 active grange units in the state. Many have a grange hall, but some meet in each other’s homes or in a rented public space. The National Grange has 2,600 grange units in 36 states. It still advocates for large family agricultural operations and small niche farms, as well as the Ag consumer, furthering grassroots policies in conservation, education, health, labor, taxation, transportation and other areas. Today’s pressing issues include improving rural healthcare and expanding affordable broadband for rural areas. Colorado’s local granges still support agricultural and rural communities through educational efforts and service projects. They stay current by adapting to modern needs and issues. Community service includes cultivating community gardens, encouraging voting and organizing blood drives and recycling. Some granges have classes in food preservation (canning, fermenting, drying and freezing) and raising chickens. As in the “olden days” granges organize potluck functions, holiday parties, community breakfasts and square dances.
These are just a handful of Colorado’s active local granges: Florissant Grange 420 purchased the historic Florissant schoolhouse in 1984 after leasing it since the early 1960s. The grange hall hosts the VFW’s monthly meetings, music jams, yoga classes and, in September, had a daylong music event with the Colorado Chapter of the Western Music Association. Altona Grange 127 at 9836 N. 39th St. in Boulder County has a number of music events, such as the upcoming October 24 Harvest Dance with music by Ethyl and the Regulars honkytonk band. The Colorado Bluegrass Music Society sponsors regular music shows. The Home on the Grange Festival in June featured farm activities and more bluegrass. The Altona Grange also hosts book clubs and agricultural classes and forms. Pikes Peak Grange 163 at 3093 North State Highway 83 in Franktown is maintained with the help of Douglas County and hosts monthly country dances and other events. The grange hall, built in 1908 and “bursting with country character,” is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Broomfield Crescent Grange 136 at 7901 E. 120th Avenue has book and history talks, theatrical plays, contra dances, film screenings and workshops. The community garden teaches about organic farming, permaculture and composting. To maintain their historic grange halls, many local units rent the facility as a unique historic space for weddings, memorials and public meetings. And yoga classes.
The Four Mile Club/Grange at the east edge of Canon City is the home of the Canon Rose Acoustic Society, which puts on monthly folk, country and bluegrass shows. The humble venue is loved by the performers because of the enthusiastic audience - lots of stomping and clapping.

Tournament Time
After paying my entry fee and just a few minutes before the starting time of 7 p.m., I headed toward the back of the room and the No. 8 seat I had drawn. It looked like there were six tables in the tournament so far and I grabbed a soda, sat down, and was ready to go. Looking at the five players already seated with me, I was surprised to know only one and him only as a fellow player. He nodded a greeting which I returned, remembering he was a very disciplined player who did not call raises unless he was ahead – good to remember. The cards hit the felt just about 7:05 p.m. Looking down, I saw the Ah - Js and before I could look up the player in 1st position raised, tripling the blind and the bet was to me. I quickly folded. This good early fold felt good as the A-J is a huge trap hand with many better starting hands – especially with a raise in front and more players to act behind. Over the next 15 minutes I

folded all but one hand, calling a small pre-flop raise with two black 9’s. The flop came 4h - Kh - Ah and I quickly folded as soon as there was a bet. Alas - at times in poker the turning point comes without warning and that is what happened just a few minutes later. While in middle position, I looked down to the best starting hand in poker - Pocket Rockets, or the Ah - Ad. There were three players in when the betting got to me and I tripled the blind, hoping to cut the field down to just a few players and gain position. The player on the button doubled my bet with the other players in between folding. Of course, he was the player I had nodded to and who played a good game. Thus, I put him on a big hand - but not as good as mine so I quickly pushed all in, hoped that would tell him exactly what I had. He looked at his stack (which was over half gone), looked up at me and said while nodding and
