Going Green
Football Sundays
Bring back the joy of an old time Christmas Christmas is a time of love and shared memories. You can bring back the joy of an old fashioned Christmas by going green with gifts and activities that warm the heart and also save some green. With the colder weather and long nights, the holiday season traditionally has been a time when families spend more evenings together gathered around the warmth of the fire. Something loving baking in the oven creates delightful aromas and warms our homes and our spirits. Sipping warm spiced drinks helps our bodies stay comfortable and slows us down so we can rest and recharge for the year ahead. Although brightly colored Christmas lighting and electronic gadgets add excitement to the season, you might consider spending more quality time with your loved ones and enjoy the traditional tastes, scents and activities of the season. Here are few simple, green suggestions. To savor the season, pour apple cider in a crockpot and simmer with aromatic mulling spices of cinnamon, cloves, and allspice. Few things are more traditional than holiday baking. To make your baking healthier, replace one-cup sugar in any baking recipe with one cup unsweetened applesauce. Replace one-cup vegetable oil in cakes and cookies with one cup mashed banana. I remember old-fashioned fragrant Pomander Balls made from oranges from my childhood. Here are the directions: To prepare the orange for inserting whole cloves, start poking holes around the orange with something sharp such as a nail or skewer. Wipe off the orange with a towel, and then push cloves into the holes. Poke cloves evenly all over to cover the orange or make a spiral or rings around the orange. To make a hang-

ing version, attach a ribbon by tying it around the pomander and securing it with pins or a hot glue gun. To prevent molding before displaying, let your pomanders dry and season for about a week in the refrigerator.
$50,000 American Dream Giveaway
Spreading Christmas cheer to others
If Blackjack is your game, play with us every day in December. Players at the table split $10,500+ when the dealer draws an 8-card 21. In addition to an 8 card 21 we have decided to Supercharge this promotion. This means that when the dealer draws a 7 card 21 the table will split 10 percent of the bad beat jackpot, which is currently at $10,500. Central City and Black Hawk’s only bad beat jackpot.
In the spirit of giving to celebrate the birthday of Jesus, why not perform little random acts of kindness, like letting others go ahead of you in line, holding the door open for a handicapped person, visiting lonely shut-ins, or calling old friends? Doing something extra for others adds a caring touch, which can help to put you in the joyful spirit of the holiday season. A personalized Christmas message with pictures on your computer printed on colorful Christmas stationery will warm more hearts than a purchased Christmas card. You can even save on stamps by emailing the card as an attachment to friends and relatives. My husband and I have composed our own greeting cards for many years. Keep the message short because a picture with a cutline is worth a thousand words. Christmas is an appropriate time to pass down family history and heirlooms with a note explaining their origins. Or make a photo album or CD of digital family pictures and include your memories in a personal letter. To dress up your holiday goodies, bake breads in small individual-size loaf pans. One recipe can be divided into several small loaves before baking for several gifts. You also can promote peace and good will by giving gifts you assemble. Purchase wicker baskets or holiday tins from the dollar store and attractively pack them with homemade goodies or wine, fruit, cheeses, coffees and teas.
How would you like your house payment made for one year? Dec. 4 – Jan. 30, we will hold drawings every Friday and Saturday, 5 – 9 p.m. Three winners from each drawing will win cash or Reserve play prizes and automatically receive 50 entries into the grand finale drawing on Jan. 30. The Moffat Line, David Moffat’s Railroad Over and Under the Continental Divide Author: John A. Sells Publisher: iUniverse Available online, through iUniverse, and at Barnes and Noble For David Halliday Moffat, one of the city’s original power brokers, forging a direct path through the Continental Divide was a longtime goal. At age 63, when many thought he was about to retire, he staked his entire fortune (approximately $20 million) to build a railroad that would run straight westward from Denver to Salt Lake City, burrowing through the formidable peaks of the Divide. It would be his biggest gamble, his worst failure, and his greatest contribution to the growth of Denver. Moffat was one of eight children, a self-made man from a poor, working-class family in Washingtonville, New York. He began his career at age 11 as a messenger for the New York Exchange Bank, promoted to assistant bank teller by the time he was 16. Moving to Omaha to join his brother while still in his teens, he became a cashier for the Bank of Nebraska and sold real estate in his spare time. He made a fortune by the time he was 20 and lost it in a bad business deal soon after. He was hired by the Woolworth brothers (unrelated to the Woolworths of five and dime fame) to open a stationery store in Denver at the
Auraria settlement. A strong supporter of the city’s successful efforts to build a link to the Union Pacific Railroad in Cheyenne, which saved the settlement from oblivion, he developed a lifelong fascination with railroads. Later president of Denver’s First National Bank, he was involved with construction of the 150-mile Denver and South Park line to Leadville, a line from Wagon Wheel Gap to the Creed District, and the Florence and Cripple Creek in 1893. The author compassionately details the story of Moffat’s line and the hardships faced as he attempted to conquer the Rockies. While trying to raise capital for his railroad, Moffat died bankrupt in New York City in 1911. Although the Moffat Road never reached its original Salt Lake destination, the 40-mile gap between the tunnel and the Rio Grande line at Dotsero eventually closed, reducing the distance between Denver and Grand Junction by 176 miles. In 1947, the Denver and Rio Grande Western eventually absorbed the Denver and Salt Lake Railroad. The pioneer of the Mof-

fat Tunnel became an important aqueduct, diverting water from the Fraser River on the Western Slope to ever-thirsty Denver. By providing a water supply for the developing suburbs, David Moffat, who helped to save Denver in 1866, was indirectly responsible for the city’s successful growth into a metropolis. According to the author, “This story is also about the men who drove the trains and built and operated the railroad under incredible railroad and equipment challenges, day and night.” An easy to read account that provides new information about Moffat’s time, life and struggles and should be of particular interest to railroad buffs. Other noteworthy holiday possibilities: Ladies of the Brown, A Woman’s History of Denver’s Most Elegant Hotel: Hotel historian Debra Faulkner provides a lively account of celebrities and commoners, the women who visited, lived at and worked in and still haunt Denver’s fabulous Brown Palace Hotel (2010). Rocky Mountain National Park: The First 100 Years: Award-winning author Mary Taylor Young tells the story of Denver’s fabulous mountain park and the people who created it, from prehistoric days into the future (2014). Decorated for the holidays, the Governor’s Mansion opens its doors for self-guided tours, Dec. 3-6 and 10-13, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

he Queen of Quality Hill, the gorgeous Georgian Revival dwelling at 400 E. 8th Ave. has served as Colorado’s official Governor’s Mansion for more than a half century. Officially called the Governor’s Residence at the Boettcher Mansion today, its first floor is open to the public for guided tours in summer and for receptions for visiting dignitaries and other events. For decades, the beautiful building has been decorated for the holidays and open to the public in early December Visitors are dazzled by the spacious reception hall, drawing room, library, dining room and the sunny southfacing Palm Room. Interior décor features white marble flooring, white stone columns, 11 fireplaces and exquisite antique furnishings. Built in 1908, the three-story 27room residence was designed by Willis J. Marean and Albert J. Norton in the elegant Quality Hill neighborhood. The stately mansion would be home to three prominent Colorado families – the Cheesmans, Evans and Boettchers – before it beaome the Executive Residence on Dec. 31, 1959. The mansion’s red-brick exterior is trimmed in elaborate white features characteristic of Georgian Revival style that harkens back to the Georgian era when the U.S. consisted of British colonies under the reign of King George. Its hipped roof is embellished by a molded cornice with dentils and prominent square modillions. The

north-facing main entrance features a two-story portico with paired, fluted Ionic columns sheltering a doorway with transom fanlight and sidelights. Quoins ornament the building’s corners. The second-story balcony is crowned by a massive broken pediment, and the roof is pierced by many small gabled dormers with elaborate pediments. The mansion’s first residents were the Cheesman family who built it in 1908. Patriarch Walter S. Cheesman made his wealth by developing railroads, building waterworks and banking endeavors. He started planning the residence with his wife Alice and teen-aged daughter Gladys, but, sadly, he died before construction began. Gladys and her mother proceeded with the plans and moved into their massive new home in 1908. Soon it became the setting for Gladys’ wedding to her childhood sweetheart John Evans II, the grandson of Colorado’s second territorial governor; the elder Evans is also remembered for founding the University of Denver. The widowed mother and young couple lived together until the birth of the Evans’ first child in 1911, after which Gladys and John relocated to their own mansion at 2000 E. Alameda in the Denver Country Club district. Mrs. Cheesman lived here the rest of her years. After her death in 1923, Claude K. and Edna Boettcher purchased the property for $75,000. He
was the head of a financial empire begun by his father Charles Boettcher that eventually included Great Western Sugar Company, Ideal Cement Company, securities, utilities, and transportation. He also owned the Brown Palace hotel.Mr. Boettcher presented the deed to his wife Edna as a Valentine’s Day present in 1924. The Boettchers’ luncheons, bridge parties, receptions and balls made the mansion a social focal point of Quality Hill. To accommodate their lavish entertaining, they expanded the dining room and extended the Palm Room by enclosing the former porch in floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the fountain and gardens and stunning views south towards Pikes Peak. They also converted Mrs. Cheesman’s music room into a billiard parlor. The Boettcher family toured the world acquiring furnishings and objets d’art, including European antiques purchased at bargain prices after World War I. Notable guests included Charles Lindbergh and future president Dwight D. Eisenhower. After Claude Boettcher died in 1957 and Edna died in 1958, the Boettcher Foundation donated the mansion to the state of Colorado. However, three state agencies deliberated for nine
months before accepting the “gift.” The aging mansion was in need of extensive expensive repairs and maintenance. Gov. Stephen L. R. McNichols finally accepted the property as a gift to the state on New Year’s Eve 1959, saving it from certain demolition. He and his wife moved in along with their five children. At the time, the surrounding Capitol Hill neighborhood was in a state of flux. Several elderly mansions were demolished and replaced high-rise apartment complexes. More properties were threatened, but the organization of Historic Denver, Inc. – specifically to preserve the Molly Brown House – and the Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods contributed to conserving the historic character of the 1880s-1910s district. Architect James Sudler, whose wife Barbara was director and president of the Colorado Historical Society, led the committee to restore the mansion and maintain its landscape and surrounding open space. Preservation work in the 1980s was guided by noteworthy architect Ed J. White, Jr., and the adjacent Governor’s Park was developed with assistance from Boettcher Foundation, public agencies, and the City of Denver. During the Christmas holidays, the house is decked out and opens its doors for open-house-style tours (with docents available to answer questions). The tours take place Dec. 3-6 and 10-13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The American Society for Interior Designers is involved in festively showcasing each first-floor space. When you visit the Mansion you will be surrounded by art and artifacts with connections to the pioneer Cheesmans, Evans and especially the Boettcher. The grand entry hall is lit by ornate 18th century French chandeliers, and its walls are covered in artwork from France, Italy and China line the walls, as well as a rare 1740

Beauvais tapestry. Furnishings include an Italian ebonized table with silvered metal mountings and a hand carved Italian baroque credenza dating from the 16th century. On display in the Drawing Room is a Waterford cut crystal chandelier that hung in the White House ballroom in 1876 when President Grant presided over America’s centennial celebration. The State Dining Room features a table and throne-like chairs from Italy, hand carved from walnut. The massive table features lion and shield supports. Flanking the fireplace are antique French rococo style mirrors atop console tables. Over the table hangs an 18th century French bronze and crystal chandelier, with fruit shaped pendants in amethyst. A centerpiece of the library is the Louis XIV French cylinder desk made of rare and delicate tulip wood with massive ormolu mounts. The library also boasts four 1690 armchairs, one of Aubusson tapestry. A glass display case holds unique jade sculptures from the 16th and 17th centuries, a pair of four-foot-tall Chinese cloisonne urns and four Tang mortuary horses. The second and third floors of the residence have functioned as the private quarters of the first families for Govs. Stephen L.R. McNichols, John Love, John D. Vanderhoof, Richard D. Lamm, Roy R. Romer, William Owens and William Ritter. First ladies Frances Owens and Jeannie Ritter spearheaded recent restoration efforts. You will enjoy the spirit of Christmas and the spirits of the many residents and visitors to possibly Colorado’s most famous and flamboyant mansion. You won’t, however, see any of Claude K. Boettcher’s beloved and massive model ship collection. Mrs. Boettcher gently but firmly insisted they be relocated, so he built a small restaurant at the Brown Palace to display the ships and calls it the Ship Tavern.

hand came up. I looked down to a Kd - 9d while near the button. By the time the betting got to me there were 5 callers and I decided to call for the pot odds. The button called, the big blind raised, and a total of 7 of us called to see the flop with more than $550 in the pot already. The flop came Jh - Qd - 3c, giving me a gut shot straight draw and a backdoor flush draw. There was one bet and a raise to $80 with 5 of us calling, adding another $400 to the middle for a total of nearly $1,000. The turn was a 6h and 3 of us called an $80 bet from across the table. I gotta be honest - as the river card came down I shut my eyes and when I opened them there was the magical 10s laying on the felt, giving me the second nut straight! There was a bet; I raised the remainder of my money; and, to my chagrin, the player to my left immediately re-raised. One player
called and the raiser tossed his Ad - Kd that completed the nut straight on top of the pile of chips in the middle of the table. Bummer: I lost a $1,500 pot with the second nut hand! Instead of a solid win for the night, my first foray into the Big, Big Game was a $900 loss and a rough beat at the end. But, as Mike McDermott says in the famous poker movie Rounders, “You can’t lose what you don’t put in the middle, but you can’t win much either.” So, I’ll be back next week and take my shot again at the Big, Big Game and this time will make my mark with a solid win. With the blinds at $20 - $40, I jumped in behind the button and it was time to play! A few hands later I had a pair of red 10’s, the betting was raised to $80 before the flop, and I called. With a flop of Jh - Ks - 4s and a quick bet in front of me, I folded quickly and was already down nearly $100. Just before the first round of blinds came around I looked down to As - Js. I called the $40 bet and saw the surprisingly unraised flop of Ad - 10d - 5s with 5 players. I bet and only one player called. The turn came a 9d and as I put him on diamonds I checked and surprisingly he did also. The river brought another diamond and when we both checked, I won with my top pair against his straight draw. I won more than $250 on this hand and was up just a bit after the first round. Over the next hour I won a few and lost a few and still had just more than $400 stacked in front of me when the following key

pair. The turn came a 10; the river came a 10; and I lost to quad 10’s. That was a tough beat! I sat down, buying in for $900. As I looked around the table, the average stack was around $2,500. As I waited for the blind to come around so I could post after the button, I checked out my competition. There were two very solid players I recognized immediately and from my experience they usually were only in a hand if they were ahead. There was the guy who had beaten me on my right who was in a lot of hands and one gentleman across the table who I remembered playing a tight yet aggressive game. The rest of the players were unknown to me - but looked solid.

And - there was just one seat open! If the game itself wasn’t enough, the player just to the right of the open seat had given me with the worst beat of my life just last year in a huge $30 - $60 Hold’em game.
