Anniversary of students deaths at AHS brings up conversation about mental health It happened Dec. 13, 2013. As the five-year mark of the tragic loss of two Arapahoe High School (AHS) seniors to gun violence approached, Littleton Public Schools’ (LPS) leadership arranged to have a frank conversation about how the school dis-

trict has applied what it has learned since that awful day when a shooter took Claire Davis’ life, then his own. Natalie Pramenko, AHS principal was in her second year as principal when the tragedy unfolded. She listed positive changes adopted since that day. Doors are kept strategically locked. Arapahoe County Sheriff

Dave Walcher provides two dedicated full-time student resource officers (SRO’s). The entire school security team meets weekly. There is a new focus on mental health and creating and maintaining strong connections between individual students and staff members. It is easier for teachers to obtain and share students’ disciplinary histo-

ry within AHS. Cell phones are no longer allowed in the classroom to give students a respite from social media. Programs started at AHS include suicide prevention, parent drug and alcohol education, defined threat assessment procedures, and enhancing the SafeTo-Tell program, which has saved dozens of lives

when teens reported friends who threatened suicide. Nate Thompson, LPS director of social, emotional, and behavior services, talked about an LPS program that allows schools to connect students and families with mental health practitioners when necessary even if they family cannot afford

Democratic Kagan will resign; Bridges wants to move up BY FREDA MIKLIN GOVERNMENTAL REPORTER

Recent rumors making the rounds were confirmed Dec. 5 when Democratic District 26 state Sen. Daniel Kagan, a Cherry Hills Village resident, announced his resignation, effective Jan. 11, 2019. Kagan represented statehouse District 3 from 2009 until 2016, when he was elected to the Senate. He served on the Senate’s Judiciary Committee and the Committee of Legal Services during the past term and sponsored four bills that were signed by Gov. John Hickenlooper. They included a measure to make the sex offender registration more effective and one concerning the fiduciary responsibilities of title insurance companies to protect funds they hold for others. Current HD3 Rep. Jeff Bridg-

Bridges who was re-elected last month in a 61 percent to 39 percent split over Republican Toren Mushovic. The Villager asked Bridges about Kagan as well as his own plans. Bridges said “Sen. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to once again follow in [his] footsteps and am honored to announce that I will seek an appointment from the vacancy committee that will select his replacement. I look forward to continue serving the constituents who put their trust in me and elected me by an overwhelming margin, along with new friends and neighbors from the community where I grew up.”

Piko cleared after ethics grievance BY DORIS B. TRUHLAR GOVERNMENTAL REPORTER

The Centennial City Council, sitting as an ethics board pursuant to municipal ordinance, cleared Mayor Stephanie Piko related to a grievance filed by a former council member against the mayor.

The charge of unethical conduct was made against Piko by former City Councilman Vorry Moon, whose wife Candace Moon is currently a member of the council. Vorry Moon contended that it was unethical for Piko to make endorsements of various candidates in the November election.

The vote was 5-1 in favor of the mayor. Only six council members sat on the ethics board. Voting not to dismiss the ethics charge was Council Member Marlo Alston. Recusing themselves from sitting on the ethics board were the mayor, and Council Members Kathy Turley and Candace Moon.

Bridges told The Villager he believes Kagan’s departure is due to a simple desire to retire. Kagan is 65 years old. Of those who might pursue his house seat, Bridges said he has heard John Stone and former GV city council member Meg Froelich. Bridges defeated Froelich in the Democratic primary for HD3 in 2016. He went on to defeat

The holiday season just feels good

Did some holiday shopping at the Cherry Creek Mall over the weekend and it is always refreshing to see the wonderful world of free enterprise at work. Beautiful stores packed with merchandise and also the little aisle vendors who sell smaller items in their booths. The parking is easy and the first hour is free. One of the best stores we visited was the Harry and David store that features fresh and dried fruit items from Medford, Oregon. Christine is the provisional store manager. They are open for several months then close following the holidays. We’re into the holiday shopping season and we always urge our readers to shop at home and skip the distant catalog cities. About 12 percent of all retail business is now on the internet and that means fewer local jobs. It appears that the field is being leveled

on sales tax collections. The local sales tax supports our cities and schools, so it is vital to the success of our economy to shop at home. In SouthGlenn the Sears store is closing and it is very sad to see an iconic name in bankruptcy. The tallest building in America was once the Sear’s Tower in Chicago. I walked through the local store on the south side of the shopping center and it is full of department store inventory of clothing, tools, garden equipment, a huge inventory. They’ve done little marketing and now the doors are closing. Mark Twain once wrote about a spider looking for a place to spin his web and chose doorways that didn’t advertise in the local newspaper. We’re thankful for the many advertisers that do support this newspaper

This week’s trail took me out to Lakewood Monday to the residence of longtime friends Ambassador Sam Zakhem and wife Merilynn. The couple was invited to the funeral services of President George H.W. Bush. Sam served as Ambassador to Bahrain during the Reagan/Bush administration. I wanted a photo of the two men as they worked together during the Desert Storm conflict removing Saddam’s forces from Kuwait. Zakhem continues to work in the Middle East assisting refugees and Christians who have been decimated by the ongoing conflicts. Sam is Lebanese by birth with a mother from Argentina and father from Lebanon. He came to America with nothing and is another great immigrant success story.

and others and to our subscribers who faithfully subscribe year after year. Most recently we had a small auto body ad appear and already the company has two repair jobs. Ocean Prime has been running ads and is packed with happy diners enjoying the fabulous new restaurant in the old Cool River location. The American economy is strong right now, the job market in Denver is in short supply. The new Gaylord Hotel is seeking at least 1,500 new employees for the new facility that is opening Dec. 19. Ocean Prime has hired 150 staff at the new restaurant. If traffic is a sign of prosperity, we have arrived. Enjoy the holiday season and mix with the crowds. This is a nice time of the year and we look forward to spending time with friends and family.

Ramblin’ around the corral with Bob Sweeney

He fluently speaks five languages, has several Ph.D.s, and is highly respected by many Middle East leaders. *** I spent many hours watching the magnificent funeral of President George H.W. Bush Wednesday. A great tribute to the statesman and the Bush family. First time in history that a presidential son has eulogized a presidential father. What must be running through Jeb Bush’s mind as he looks to the future? *** The Villager always stays on schedule and we print Tuesday nights at The Denver Post plant in Berthoud. Pages are sent electronically to the plant Tuesday afternoon. The newspaper is delivered back promptly Wednesday afternoon to our office and the U.S. Post Office on Arapahoe Road. There

the newspapers are dispersed throughout the mail delivery system with a periodical permit as first-class mail. However, some mail carriers fail to determine the difference between a periodical legal publication and junk mail, so sometimes we get put in the third-class pile that can take several days for delivery. If you don’t receive your paper within a few days put a note in your mailbox. However, this past Wednesday the post office closed for the Bush funeral, therefore the mail didn’t move until Thursday, meaning later deliveries. Someday we will probably just deliver the newspaper electronically, but we still believe in print and most of our subscribers still like the newspaper to read with a cup of coffee sometime during the week. Newspapers stack up easily and

can be read without a passcode at one’s convenience. Villager readers tell me they find incredible news in The Villager that they don’t find anywhere else. The newspaper makes a great holiday gift for friends or family where they receive 52 newspapers a year for only $45. Call B.T. at the office, 303-773-8313 ext. 301 to enter a gift subscription or renewal. *** Monday nights I love to watch the Good Doctor. This is one of the best television program series starting at 9 p.m. The autistic young doctor uses his hidden brain power to achieve medical miracles to the shock, dismay and admiration of his colleagues at the hospital where he was barely able to practice medicine. The program shows the power of Continued on page 5

then received a new supply. This is the reason that on Hanukkah the candles are lit for eight days – one the first day, two the second day and so forth until all eight are light on the eighth day. The Maccabees, unfortunately, were skilled fighters, but incompetent rulers, and a few decades later Judah’s nephew seized power and occupied Idumaea, where he forcibly converted the locals to Judaism. When Julius Caesar took control of Jerusalem, he wanted to reward the powerful position to a man named Antipater, but that position had to be filled by a Jew, and since Antipater’s father had been forcibly converted by the Maccabees when he lived in Idumaea, Antipater was Jewish and so was his son Herod who eventually took control of the city. This is the Herod of the New Testament. Matthew says that the wise men came to Jerusalem looking for Jesus “in the time of King Herod,” who was a partic-

ularly vicious tyrant whose disregard for the population all but destroyed Jerusalem. Matthew’s point is that Jesus’s birth took place when the people of Jerusalem needed him most. This is the event celebrated on Christmas. To sum it up, Alexander’s death paved the way for Antiochus, The Insane, to defile the temple in Jerusalem, which in turn, opened the door for the Maccabees to rise up and retake Jerusalem. The Maccabees converted Herod’s grandfather to Judaism which paved the way for Herod to destroy Jerusalem, which opened the door for Jesus to be born in a period of hopelessness. It is interesting to note that the first day of Hanukkah is on the 25th day of Kislev on the Jewish calendar while Christmas is celebrated on the 25th day of the month of December on the Gregorian calendar. May you always have a Happy Hanukkah, and a Merry Christmas.

Death of a true statesmen The passing of President George H.W. Bush marked the sad ending of the impactful leadership of America’s Greatest Generation. Bush’s legacy spans his service as a decorated Naval aviator during World War II in the Pacific Theater to become the 41st president of the United States. At his funeral at the Washington National Cathedral, the many eulogies presented a picture of Bush’s patriotic service to America as a young naval aviator, congressman, ambassador, director of the CIA and ultimately, president of the United States. All the speakers reflected on their admiration of the man as to his truthfulness, principled approach to governing and his humility. He never boasted of his personal accomplishments nor humiliated those who disagreed with him. He also sought to find some common value in people to which a dialog could be established to seek a compromise to issue of concern.

While with good intentions of protecting our school kids this is a school district issue and highly controversial among many people. Bush was one of the last of the World War II veterans who strived to seek an end to the Cold War, oversaw the collapse of the U.S.S.R. and witnessed the tearing down of the Berlin Wall which signaled the end of Russian influence in Eastern Europe. Historian Jon Meacham stated of Bush life, “For Lincoln and Bush both called on us to choose the right over the convenient, to hope rather than to fear and to heed not our worst impulses but our best instincts.” Unfortunately, as President Trump observed during the funeral and the adoration shown to the late Bush that he doesn’t have any of those qualities. The fact that Bush showed his true character by inviting Trump to his funeral in spite of the disrespectful rhetoric that has come from his mouth about Bush and his family showed all American’s that, even after his death, he strove to maintain the dignity of the office of president.

Arapahoe Road, some residents have stated at Centennial City Council meetings that Mercedes-Benz of Littleton, located at 8070 S. Broadway in Littleton, was backing the opposition to the new dealership, in order to keep competition at bay. Akiva said that when an expenditure is made in violation of the Colorado Revised Statutes, the committee or individual must report that expenditure to the city clerk or secretary of state and that no report was made to either one. Setterlind said in response to written questions that her responsibility is to accept the complaints. The city follows its own municipal code in reviewing the complaints to determine whether there are violations of the Fair Campaign Practices Act, she stated. Records of complaints are “kept in accordance with the Colorado Municipal Retention Schedule,” which is for one year “after termination of the committee at issue,” she stated. Citizens have “a right to financial disclosure,” Akiva stated. He also said he has no personal ax to grind, is not thinking of running for public office, does not drive a Mercedes, and has never had any connection with Centennial, other than living there. The fact is that there were falsehoods “on government forms,” he said. Such falsehoods are not acceptable.

A Centennial resident has filed three Fair Campaign Practices Act complaints with the Centennial city clerk, alleging violations of that act, related to the issue of more car dealers on East Arapahoe Road. The resident making the complaint states that he believes opposition to new dealerships is an attempt by an existing Littleton car dealer to quash competition. The basis of the complaints is that they are improper because the entity that was reported to have made contributions to an organization titled “No New Dealerships on Arapahoe” (NNDA) did not exist at the time the alleged donations were made. City Clerk Barbara Setterlind told The Villager that it is not her responsibility to enforce the campaign laws. She said her responsibility is to make a record of the complaints. The city keeps the complaints on file for one year after the complaints are made. The resident who filed the complaints is Uriel Akiva, who lives in the Southglenn Subdivision. This is in the far western area of the city. Akiva is an employee of the City of Commerce City, where he works as the parks project and program coordinator. Akiva alleges in two of his

complaints that NNDA, through its registered agent Katie Kennedy, “did knowingly and willfully falsely complete a written instrument that violates state law.” Adding that a report that Sequoia Community Partners, LLC, made two in-kind contributions totaling $97,540.36. Akiva says that is improper because such an entity “did not exist at that time.” In an interview, Akiva told The Villager that he might also file complaints with the district attorneys office because in 2016, a similar petition process was also illegal because Centennial violated state law. He said that NNDA filed false reports in regard to the identity of entities that contributed to NNDA. “While the election laws cover some aspects of this, willfully falsely completing the reports not only violates election law but also violates criminal statutes,” he stated in an email. Basically, his claim is that there was “a conspiracy to hide the identity of the entity who made the contributions,” Akiva said. He also alleges that there is “an unregistered committee” that has “spent money in opposition” to a new dealership. Akiva said his “goal is to get these organizations to follow the state laws and ensure that citizens get the funding information” to which they are entitled. In regard to the controversy surrounding additional car dealerships on East

A Centennial citizen Monday night urged the city council to give Arapahoe County’s newly elected sheriff, Tyler Brown, “a chance” to do his job and be accepted as the new top lawman for the city. Speaking to the council was Bennett Rutledge, who has been a candidate in the past for city council. Rutledge in the past has been a member of the Libertarian Party. Brown defeated incumbent Sheriff David Walcher in the November election. Rutledge said Centennial doesn’t need a law enforcement department like Aurora or one like Denver, which he said “guns down unarmed citizens.” The council listened to Rutledge’s comments. In another matter, the council received the report of Bob Baker, fire chief for South Metro Fire Rescue District, said that Littleton voters approved a unification plan, so Littleton is now part of South Metro Fire Rescue District. The department has received 6,500 calls this year so far, Baker said. On Oct. 30, the department was called out to a garbage truck fire. New recruits have recently been sworn in. The fire rescue Pipe and Drum Corps has been invited to play at Normandy, France June 6, 2019, and is “very honored” to have been issued the invitation, he said.

Glenn Thompson, chief of the Arapahoe Sheriff’s Public Safety Bureau, told the council that the sheriff’s office will be once again participating in the Shop With a Cop program, in which children are matched with a law enforcement officer and taken on a shopping trip. There are many donated gifts, and the children are permitted to choose gifts for Christmas. The children are competitors in the Special Olympics, he said. Mayor Stephanie Piko told Thompson that the city appreciated the service of Walcher over the past few years. She said his service as the sheriff has been “a benefit to our community.” One of the council members asked Thompson whether there has been an increase in the number of homeless people in Centennial, since Denver started cracking down on homeless individuals. He said no. The council heard a report from two members of the city’s Fiber Commission, Ray Weldell and Jim Duncan, who noted that the installation of the fiber backbone around the city has been completed, and the building of the backbone was “calm and smooth.” They said that the “goals of the master [fiber] plan have been met.” There was extensive comment by community members regarding an ordinance that would repeal an earlier ordinance regarding new retail automobile sales businesses along the central East Arapahoe

Road corridor. This has been controversial in Centennial, and there was a referendum petition challenging an ordinance that would have permitted more automobile dealers. The ordinance was in front of the council for a public hearing. Jill Meakins, scolded the council, stating that the council should “stop insulting us and treating us like criminals.” Another woman, Rhonda Livingston, thanked the council for their decision not to allow more car dealers. Some of the residents who spoke said they did not like the provision in the ordinance that would allow the council to bring up the topic again in the future. Andrew Spaulding said the council should not leave the door open to allow more car dealers in the future. City attorney Bob Widner said the language in the proposed ordinance was routine, and is the language usually found in such laws. Councilman Ron Weidmann was the only member of the council voting “no” on the ordinance that would – once again – ban car dealers from locating on East Arapahoe Road. The vote was 7-1. One council member was absent. During the reports of individual council members, Mike Sutherland said he met with a minister, Rev. Gary Brower of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. He said Brower asked him what the members of his church could do for the community.

Bellco’s newest branch is located just down the street from Children’s Colorado at I-225 and Colfax. “While every single member of the Children’s Colorado team plays a vital role in caring for the hospital’s patients and their families, nurses are on the front lines when families come in – especially in the emergency department – offering comfort, solace, care and reassurance in what can be a very frightening situation for children and their caregiv-

ers. It is our incredible honor to help fund the programs the hospital has in place to ensure these amazing individuals get the support they need – be that emotional, spiritual, psychological or physical – to stay strong, healthy and resilient,” said Candice Aragon, Bellco’s vice president of marketing. Across the Children’s Colorado network of 17 locations, nearly 2,500 registered nurses clock in each and every day and night, seven days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

“Our resilience programs are funded entirely through philanthropy and grants, so we are truly grateful for contributors like Bellco who make these much-needed programs possible. Bellco’s generous gift will help us continue to support and encourage our nurses and medical staff who give so much of themselves to our patients and families every day,” said Kali Wallace, senior manager, corporate partnerships at Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation.

Assisted Living: Offset Medicaid Bed loses and improve Residents Health with PGx Testing LES SIMPSON WELLNESS TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST

At a Assisted Living Association meeting, they were discussing how hard it is to maintain profitability with Medicaid reimbursement. There are now three wellness technologies the facility can provide to their residents and their relatives and increase the bottom line. PGx testing is approved for Medicaid, Medicare and many insurance company reimburse-

ments. What is PGx testing? Drug ads have a list of side effects to be careful of. They don’t tell you 350 people die a day from Adverse Drug Reaction. Another 5000 enter the hospital. The AMA says ADR is the 4th largest killer in the US. PGx testing or Pharmacogenetics was approved 14 years ago by FDA to minimalize or eliminate the adverse reaction and death. Watch 30-minute video, www. tinyurl.com/wptpgx30

Educating your residents about this technology could possibly save their life. All the Elite Hospitals are adding PGx to their treatment programs. St Jude Children Hospital tests all patients. After your education session, the residents take a letter to their doctor requesting the test. Of course, you don’t have time for staff members to do education or follow up. What if PGx testing would pay for the staff time and much more?

Working with the lab allows the Assisted Living to be paid every time your resident’s doctor performs a PGx test. The FDA has issued a black box warning on over 200 drugs that recommend a PGx test before patient usage. I know your residents don’t know about the list because most doctors don’t either. Especially for people over 70, American Family Physician says that 1 out of every 3 admissions to the hos-

pital is because of ADR. The facility is not only paid for your resident’s test but for every patient the doctor orders the test for. If the doctor has 1000 patients and tests 100, that is pure profit for the AL. Once your resident’s family and friends see the results of the test, many will want their own test and the facility gets paid for their test also. Please contact me for details on how your facility can profit protecting your resident’s health. GV adopts newly revised comprehensive plan Plan adopted with little fanfare

Commitment to Excellent Care

BY FREDA MIKLIN GOVERNMENTAL REPORTER

At its last meeting of 2018, GV’s city council adopted significant revisions to its comprehensive plan, written and approved by multiple council members who campaigned against changing it when they ran for election last year. It reflects some different values from the plan it replaced. Housing goals formerly contained in the city’s plan that have been excised, include, “Encourage the diversity of housing types which allows a mixture of socio-economic situations,” and “Ensure the availability of a variety of residential housing types.” A transportation goal in the former plan, excised from the new one, is “Encourage implementation of mass-transit systems and other alternatives to single-occupant

No citizens testified at the public hearing before the council unanimously voted to adopt the new comprehensive plan language. Restricting new housing development to single-family homes on (no smaller than) quarter-acre lots effectively eliminates any new residents who can’t afford $800,000 + homes.” He went on, “When the housing market passed me by, that’s economics. But when government zones to exclude the middle class, well, that’s just embarrassing.” He concluded, “There’s no need to Save Our Village from the likes of people like me…A collection of houses does not a community make. It’s certainly not a Village.” Without discussion, the council voted unanimously to adopt the plan. Council member Anne Ingebretsen commented, “This document translates the citizens’ vision into the comprehensive plan.” Mayor Ron Rakowsky asked for a round of applause for council’s accomplishment.

Honors and accolades

GV Municipal Court Judge Elizabeth Shifrin, a lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force, just returned from a seven-month counterterrorism deployment in Djibouti, Africa, where she worked with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense of Ethiopia and the Somali National Army. As a token of her appreciation for the support she has received from the city, Shifrin brought back an American flag that she personally flew over counterterrorism operations in eastern Africa and Somalia on Sept. 25. The flag was accepted on behalf of the citizens of Greenwood Village by military veterans council members Tom Dougherty and Dave Kerber. Invited to lead citizens in the city council chamber in the Pledge of Allegiance were sisters Scarlett Kirby, 9 and Genevieve Kirby, 6. Scarlett is a third-grader and Genevieve is in kindergarten at High Plains Elementary, where both girls love to study science. James Phelps, president-elect of the American Public Works Association (APWA) recognized GV’s public works department with two awards. The first was a public outreach award for the city’s annual public works and parks maintenance day for first-graders at Belleview Elementary School, which GV has held for the past 20 years. The second award was for GV’s role in the I-25 and Arapahoe Road Construction Project, which was recognized as Project of the Year by APWA. fmiklin.villager@gmail.com

In such people, symptoms of Alzheimer’s may be incorrectly attributed to stress. Adults who suspect they might be suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s should have a comprehensive medical evaluation, which may include a neurological exam and/or brain imaging, conducted by a physician who specializes in Alzheimer’s disease.

While the Alzheimer’s Association notes that age is the biggest risk factor for Alzheimer’s, the group also warns that even men and women nowhere close to retirement age can develop the disease. In fact, the Alzheimer’s Association reports that, in the United States alone, roughly 200,000 people under the age of 65 have early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Smooth sailing at Cherry Crest Seafood Market A trip down memory lane… Cherry Crest Seafood Market & Restaurant opened in 1985 in this location as a local New England-style seafood market by original owner, Mike Brooks. After a few years in business; flying in fresh fish almost daily and keeping true to the “Back East” style of seafood; Brooks decided to open up the second tier of the operation, which was the restaurant portion of Cherry Crest. Brooks owned Cherry Crest for almost 29 years, creating a staple in the community- a local place you could always count on for a great meal with a smile. Finally, the time came for him to

sell. When that time came it was an obvious decision to sell to long time employee and manager at the time Karen Bachel and her husband, Larry.

The next chapter in the Cherry Crest story…

In 2014 the ownership of Cherry Crest changed, but not much else did. Still a family owned, local business who takes pride in being a part of the community! “Yes, Cherry Crest still reels in its signature bevy of succulent seafood – from an Alaskan Halibut broiled in Chablis to a blackened Cajun Catfish to the Continued on page 18

GV public works staff reveals first draft of transportation master plan By Freda Miklin Governmental Reporter

As Greenwood Village winds down its 18-month $250,000 transportation study, its consultants held one more two-hour public input meeting Nov. 29 at city hall. Besides city staff and paid consultants, around 20 people attended. The draft of the Greenwood Village Transportation Master Plan contains 23 proposed roadway infrastructure improvements, some short-term, some long-term that range from the general (e.g., at Belleview Avenue and Dayton Street, “Provide pedestrian safety improvements”) to the very specific (e.g., at Orchard Road and Quebec Street, “add dedicated southbound right turn lane”). It contains many excellent strategies that city council will now review, then choose whether to approve and fund. Several are simple projects that could tangibly improve traffic flow and thus residents’ experience driving in the city. Some are long-term strategies. Public works manager Jeremy Hanak mentioned the right-turn lane added to northbound Holly Street at Belleview Avenue in the summer of 2017 as an example of a quality-of-life project that makes it easier for residents to get around. What GV cannot do on its own, is address the most significant underlying problems that contribute to the difficulty residents have getting to and from their homes on a daily basis. Betty Thompson, who lives on Gaylord Way in western GV, asked what the city was planning in terms of transportation to help seniors get around. She was told there are no current plans for seniors. Jim Skagen, who lives in the Preserve, suggested city staff look into a two-way left turn lane on Belleview between University and Holly. Cary and Mindy Berman came to alert traffic engineers that it is still extremely dangerous to cross Belleview Avenue at Dayton Street, even though there is now a red-light camera in place. Mindy Berman, who walks her dog on Dayton Street daily, said she knew of three people who had been hit by careless drivers making turns onto and from Belleview Avenue at Dayton Street. The Bermans asked staff to have a police officer spend time watching the pedestrian activity at that intersection to get a sense of the dangers those crossing the street continue to face. The Villager spoke to the Bermans and asked staff, together with them, whether a defined visible crosswalk across Belleview Avenue might be an option to draw drivers’ attention to pedestrians. At its study session Dec. 3, the council was given the first

draft of strategies for a transportation master plan by Hanak and transportation planner Josie Ortiz. Representatives of the two consulting firms contracted to do the study were present. Fehr & Peers was the transportation consultant for the contract. Their representative informed council that after studying trends and gathering data, they determined that “overall, traffic volumes are going to increase in the year 2040 from where they are right now.” She went on, “Based on the goals that were provided and our national experience on transportation master plans... we provided the full gamut of some of the transportation options that have helped communities improve mobility within their community (around the country)….” As the population of residents and workers steadily increases throughout the area and especially around Denver’s Belleview Station, the Belleview Avenue/ I-25 interchange continues to be a severe bottleneck for GV residents. Funding has not been identified to carry out the plan to fix the intersection, estimated to cost $50 million when it was largely completed in 2016. Mayor Ron Rakowsky reported that he recently met with Governor-elect Jared Polis and five other mayors and Belleview/I-25 was discussed. Polis said it could not be funded by an additional sales tax or bonds (voters rejected both in November’s election), leaving no identified revenue source (other than the state’s general fund). Rakowsky reported that GV was in talks with other local partners to form a regional transportation alliance to address issues like fixing Belleview/I-25, which he estimated will now cost closer to $100 million. Rakowsky also reported that Polis, a 10-year U.S. congressman, thought there was little chance that federal monies would be provided for this project. Strategies are contained in the draft of the transportation master plan to address the 45,000 employees who work in GV daily and mostly drive to and from work alone. The city’s own data on greenwood villageconnects.com shows that between 2007 and 2016 the number of people who used the Orchard Station light rail increased from 350 to 600 per day, while the number of people who used the Arapahoe Station light rail increased from 700 to 950 per day. City council needs to decide whether to accept staff and consultants’ recommendations to adopt strategies to increase those numbers to get more daily commuters to use light rail instead of clogging up GV’s roads. fmiklin.villager@gmail.com

the gulf, and to warn the American people about that pending danger. For love of America and for the respect and faith in Bush and his bold vision to put an end to Saddam’s aggression, I started the Coalition for America at Risk, along with some of like minded friends. Throughout the campaign where I gave over 300 speeches and radio and TV appearances around the country, I always kept in mind how divisive the Vietnam War was and how opposed the American people were to have American troops involved in another Vietnam. As a matter of fact, when I testified at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in support of the Bush plan to liberate Kuwait, Sen. Joe Biden, adamantly criticized my support of Bush and invoked the horrible times Americans went through during the Vietnam War. Bush though used his great experience acquired over the years that he served as a Congressman, an ambassador to China and the U.N., as director of the CIA and eight years as vice president, to assemble a great coalition that destroyed Saddam Hussein. It made mockery of his boasting about his army’s strength and his claim that the war was going to be, “The mother of all wars”. The Bush victory in Kuwait put an end to the divisiveness that the Vietnam War caused and brought back the deserved honor and respect for the brave men and women of our Armed Forces. Instead of ridiculing the returning troops, there were victory parades and rejoicing and confetti when the troops came home victoriously. I was privileged to be on the honor stand with Bush and Gen. Norman Schwarskopf during the Desert Storm victory parade on Constitution Ave., in Washington, D.C. I also was with president and Mrs. Bush along with my quest the late Holly Coors, at the USO victory celebration in Los Angeles where a gracious Bush honored me by saying, “Sam, thank you for your support. America will never forget your contribution to our victory.” What a great honor for an immigrant from Lebanon, who came to America as a young man with $23 in his pocket. As a grateful American, I thank the Lord who brought me to this great and wonderful country and I thank Him equally for introducing me to this noble, gracious and great leader named George H. W. Bush.

The brokenness of Christmas BY BRAD STRAIT

I love Christmas, with its songs and candle-lit services. But Christmas is also a challenging time. As the lights twinkle, we all try to be kinder, but we often feel deeply any “malfunctioning parts” of our lives. Missing family. Financial issues. Overbooked schedules. Broken relationships. For many, Christmas is corrupted with stress, depression, abuse and loneliness. Too often, joy and hope and love seem bagged by the Grinch and carried away.

I remember a young mom in my church who lost her husband unexpectedly at 34 years old. His flu bug one day became her sobbing the next. As I hugged her, I looked at their decorated Christmas tree and my heart tore— perceiving two small boys limping through Christmas that year without a dad. Christmas can be full of brokenness. It helps me that the first Christmas was also touched by emptiness. The Bible reminds us that Jesus voluntarily left heaven, and emptied himself to become one of

us. Amazing. The unchanging and omnipresent son of God became limited to one place in space and time: a little first-century town in Palestine. The most powerful required feeding and changing. The One who created everything on the Earth—warm tides, rain forests and every manner of life— immersed himself in the decaying of a barnyard stable situated in a world full of turmoil and war. For Jesus, the Christmas process involved an unimagined pouring out. Followed by the hope of great fullness. His purity

tism in Europe, particularly in Paris and Berlin, and in the context of statements made by British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who might be the U.K. prime minister one day. Anti-Semitism, she said, “is a conspiracy theory in which Jews are responsible for the bad in the world.” Another provocative idea Weiss shared was the premise that Christians and Muslims believe that all humanity will eventually adopt their faith, even though Jews brought

the world the idea of one god and the sanctity of human life. Jews need to embrace their values, she said. Weiss touched on the concept of Israel as an occupier, which she said is true, so it should not be avoided. She closed by saying that Israel came into being after World War II to end Jewish victimhood. Weiss’ speech made her listeners a little uncomfortable and gave them much to think about, just as she planned. fmiklin.villager@gmail.com

mixing with our dirt-encrusted world, to sanctify it. His emptying becoming a path to our fullness. Christians believe that the Baby Jesus begins the final victory over brokenness. For us, the birth of Jesus changes everything! If emptiness, stress or depression pursue you this Christmas,

take hope. Filling is always preceded with a tipping of the cup to emptiness. Come light a candle. God has not forgotten. He seeks. He loves. He comes. Wait for it. Feel the emptiness but seek the pouring in of Christmas! Brad Strait is senior pastor at Cherry Creek Presbyterian Church in Greenwood Village.

It’s our homemade lobster-salad mix with a little red onion, celery, white pepper and lemon juice on a toasted hoagie roll. It is one of our best-selling items and always a good choice! We at Cherry Crest take pride in the fact that the majority of our employees have been with us for over 20 years. Our Head Chef has been here since the 1990’s, and Armando the gentlemen who always seats you and helps out on the floor has been here for over 25 years. “We’re definitely funky. It’s very unusual and we didn’t want some other owner com-

ing in here who didn’t really get what we are. I don’t know of too many places in town where you can buy live lobsters right out of the tank. We have people from Back East who will come in here and they will pick that lobster clean,” Bachel said. And yes, those lobsters – and everything else – can be taken to go, either prepared or unprepared. About 25 percent of our business is from the market retail end of our two-tiered operation. “I have some people I’ve never seen them in the restaurant, but I see them on a weekly basis coming in to buy fish,” Bachel said. An all-time favorite for many shoppers has been Cherry Crest’s Lobster Clambake for two, complete with easy directions and sides. In addition to our regular menu, we also offer a dine-in Early Bird Special, Monday – Thursday,

4 – 5:30 p.m. Other than the change in ownership, not much else has changed. We still source some of our fish from old fishermen families who we’ve worked with from the very beginning. Second and third- generation fisherman in Boston. The people we get our scallops from are out of New Bedford, Mass. They’ve been there forever; and we will continue to work with them for as long as possible. After over 30 years, we are fortunate enough to have some of the best customers. Cherry Crest wouldn’t be where it is today with them! We love our old time “regulars” just the same as “first – timers” and we take pride in being a part of people’s stories for generations to come. We look forward to serving our community for years to come and THANK YOU for continually supporting our family-owned business!

Avalon hybrid has top billing About the time that I think I won’t drive a better vehicle than the most recent test drive along comes a better one. Overall cars and trucks just keep getting better and better and tough competition between U.S, German and Asian car manufacturing companies are keeping the car prices very competitive. All of the new electronics, safety features, and hybrid options are making cars safer and more functional for the new era of transportation. I was at a meeting this week where a neighbor has installed solar energy panels on his home where he can charge his new hybrid car for a minimal amount. He reported that he might buy two tanks of 7 gallons of gasoline a year. This week was a treat with a 2019 Toyota Avalon hybrid that is a gasoline-powered 178hp, 2.5L with a hybrid boost to 215 h.p. A powerful four-cylinder car with a Toyota sequential variable speed transmission that works so well in gear and speed choices. Outside of being powerful, the Avalon hybrid has delivered fuel economy of 41.7 miles per gallon during the week’s drive. The car body is long and sleek, like a low-cut evening dress with “Opulent Amber” paint. The interior is a combination of rich looking leather and vented heated front seats. This Toyota has final assembly in Georgetown, Kent. with a suggested retail price of $44,870 fully equipped and loaded with the latest electronic and safety equipment.

Take the sonar radar that on cruise control slows the car or speeds up automatically with traffic flow. No old-style continuous cruise control that kept the vehicle at a continuous speed, no matter what was ahead. The Toyota Safety Sense system includes the pre-collision system stopping the car before striking a forward object and also warning of danger ahead. Lane departure warnings and blind spot monitors add to the safety of driving a smart system vehicle. In driving to a mountain destination, it was easy to use the navigation system voice assist program and get a live voice to assist in the driving instructions placed on the large screen monitor. With these colder mornings how nice to have a heated steering wheel and front seats with the memory stored from the prior day’s drive. The sound system is easily monitored and adjusted to all radio channels. No safety rating yet on this new 2019 model but no doubt will be another perfect overall rating so common on Toyota products. There may be many higher priced luxury cars in the marketplace, but this 2019 Avalon hybrid is a tough act to follow and has the looks, power, and fuel economy to earn an A-plus rating. The six area Toyota dealerships were the sponsors of the huge Denver Dream Center event giving toys and gifts to over 4,000 Denver area children Saturday at Coors Field parking lots. A huge thanks to these dealers for their support of this meaningful event.

Dana Crawford as 2019 NWSS Parade Grand Marshal

The National Western Stock Show is excited to announce Denver urban developer and preservationist, Dana Crawford, as the Grand Marshal for the 2019 Stock Show Kick-Off Parade, presented by Arrow Electronics. On Thursday, Jan. 10, Dana Crawford will lead the traditional drive of longhorn cattle, horses and western wagons through the streets of downtown Denver to celebrate the start of the 2019 National Western Stock Show. The parade begins at noon outside of Crawford’s very own name-sake hotel, The Crawford Hotel at Union Station. The parade marches 15 blocks down 17th Street to Tremont. “It is a great honor to have a Denver pioneer and visionary like Dana Crawford kicking-off our iconic Stock Show Parade,” said Paul Andrews, president

the initial designation of the LoDo District and creation of Larimer Square to transit Union Station. She has redeveloped more than a million square feet of historic property in the city of Denver. “This is truly a surprise and an honor to serve as the National Western Stock Show’s Parade Grand Marshal,” said

Crawford. “It ties so closely to our steadfast responsibility to further the great traditions of our western heritage.” The Stock Show Parade concludes with the annual barbecue lunch, sponsored by Colorado State University, in the atrium of the Wells Fargo Building at 17th Street and

Broadway from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Lunch guests will enjoy great western barbecue, music, and the City of Denver’s proclamation of Jan. 10, 2019, as Dress Western Day in Denver. The barbecue is open to the public and benefits the 4-H International Youth Group. Lunch tickets are $11.
