Recent statistics from the Colorado Division of Gaming show that wagering reached $281.7 million up 7 percent from $262.1 million during the same July to October in 2014. That is a nice quarterly percentage gain raising $27.5 million for state tax revenue for our state treasury. This is more tax money collected than before the financial crisis in 2008 when $26.8 was collected in 2007. Interestingly, there were 46 casinos operating in 2007, compared to 36 today. New figures will be coming out in January by Lois Rice, executive director of the Colorado Gaming Association, and the good trend should continue upward. Early snowstorms have really improved the ski season outlook and the slopes are open and busy already. No impending drought on the horizon for Colorado, as the ski industry brings millions to the mountain towns and Denver metro economy. Broncos’ mania is at a high level and generally the atmosphere around the state is optimistic as we end the year. Gasoline prices have plunged, and while hurting the energy producers, the low pump prices are appreciated by hard working consumers. I’ve seen low gasoline and oil prices before and the next thing to watch for will be fuel shortages. Oil companies aren’t fools and the prices will reach a level

The Eugenie Diamond

he Eugenie Diamond is described as a perfectly cut, oval-shaped, 51-carat brilliant stone believed to be of Brazilian origin. This much-traveled diamond has not only changed hands many times, but is also one of the few diamonds to successfully change its name. Its history is that familiar tale of royal ownership highlighted by all the perils passion and intrigue that go with it. It has been used for everything from a tool of passion, a bribe, and a golden parachute. Its adventures include being smuggled out of the country and a disappearance for an extended period of time. While unconfirmed, a book recording important Brazilian diamonds by Esmeraldino Reis includes a reference to a stone believed to be that of the future Eugenie diamond. According to Reis, the Eugenie Diamond weighed in excess of 100 carats in the rough and was discovered in 1760 in the Minas Gerais province of Brazil. After exportation to Lisbon, it is believed to have been sent for cutting to Holland. After its cutting, the diamond somehow made its way to Russia. Its story in Russia begins with the Grand Duke Peter, grandson of Peter the Great. While heir to the throne of Russia, he married Catherine, daughter of a German Prince. Upon Peter’s ascension to the Russian throne it became clear to just about everyone, but Peter, that he was ill equipped to rule. Soon a marital rift developed between Peter and his wife. Upon hearing of Peter’s plans to dispose of her, Catherine beat her husband to the punch, staging a coup of her own. Supported by the imperial Guard and certain Russian nobility, she took St. Petersburg and was proclaimed Empress in July of 1762. The outmaneuvered and hapless Peter III abdicated and was later assassinated. The newly crowned Empress (later known as Catherine the Great) enjoyed ruling Russia and all the perks that went with it. That included access to the Russian Crown Jewels. Having a passion for jewelry, Catherine had the future Eugenie diamond set in a hair ornament. One of Catherine’s great supporters and - perhaps more importantly - lover was the dashing Grigori Potemkin. Due to his special place in Catherine’s heart, Potemkin quickly developed the status of most powerful man in Russia. The smitten Catherine bestowed many gifts

on her lover, including a certain pear-shaped diamond. The stone was promptly christened the “Potemkin” diamond. After Potemkin’s death, his namesake diamond, along with the rest of his vast collection of jewelry, was inherited by his niece, Countess Branitsky. This collection eventually was bequeathed to her daughter, Princess Colorado. Meanwhile, thousands of miles to the west, the President of France, Emperor Napoleon III, was attracted to an incredible Spanish beauty named Eugenia Maria de Montijo de Guzman. The daughter of a Spanish nobleman loyal to the French, she married Napoleon III and was crowned Empress Eugenia. Purchasing the “Potemkin” diamond from Princess Colorado, Napoleon III presented it as a gift to his bride. The “Potemkin” now not only had a new owner, but a new name as well. From this point forward the diamond would forever be referred to as the “Eugenie.” Even though the Empress amassed a large collection of jewels, the Eugenie diamond was always her favorite. While in the possession of the Empress, the Eugenie diamond was featured in a necklace. After the Franco - German War and the fall of the French Empire in 1870, The Empress escaped to England with some of her jewels, including her beloved diamond, and placed them in safekeeping with the bank of England. Although many of these were sold at Christie’s, the renowned auction house, the Eugenie was sold to Mulhar Rao, the Gaekwar of Baroda, for $75,000. Besides being one of the wealthiest men in the world and an avid gem collector, this Maharatta prince became notorious for his attempt to murder the British resident, Colonel Phayre, by mixing diamond powder in his food. This was in 1874. But the plot was unsuccessful and he was tried on a charge of poisoning and disposed of by the Viceroy. After this incident, the Eugenie disappeared, together with many other large diamonds. Later, the Eugenie reappeared and came into the possession of Mrs. N.J. Dady of Bombay. Since her death a number of years ago, however, there has been no clue to the present whereabouts of this historically important diamond. All efforts to locate the stone and establish its ownership have been fruitless.

Scrooge or Marley’s Ghost, the 35 mm treasure, also viewable online, re-tells Charles Dickens’ popular tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, a misanthropic businessman visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve. After a harrowing evening, he sees the light and embraces the spirit of Christmas, figuratively speaking. Edison’s version omitted the ghosts and limited the vision to Jacob Marley in a white sheet, using dissolving scenes and trick effects unknown at the time (Background note: In Dickens’ day, people often told ghost stories on Christmas Eve

for fun.) Multiple movie and TV versions have been produced, with the 1938 film starring Reginald Gardiner still considered to be one the best. In 1910, Edison produced another holiday tale, The Night Before Christmas. Similar to Smith’s movie, it involves a visit from Santa, although this one includes live reindeer. Although not a complete flop, it was never a smash hit like most Frank Capra movies. The director always had a soft spot for the film, but he was amazed by its popularity in later years. Each decade has its own hits: The 1980s: A Christmas Story (1983), Die Hard (1988) and Bill Murray’s Scrooged (1988); the 1990s: Home Alone (1990), The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) and The Preacher’s Wife (1996); the 2000s: Elf (2003), Christmas with the Kranks (2004) and The Family Stone (2005). In the interest of fairness, there are a few excellent Hanukkah movies, but the only really great Kwanzaa film is A Black Candle, narrated by Maya Angelou. But the holiday is only 50 years old, so stay tuned.
