Gemstones & Minerals
Jade: “Stone of Heaven”
The mysteries of Jade are ancient and still mystify jade admirers with its unique qualities as the “Stone of Heaven”. This gemstone is believed to bring its wearer good health, good luck and protection. So, while everything has a price, jade is priceless because it stands for the essence of purity and the symbol of life. The Chinese consider jade more precious and reverent than anything else on earth. Being so revered and honored, it was only rightfully worn only by the emperor, who was considered the “Son of Heaven.” The Chinese considered jade a sacred mineral, used as the material for making sacred implements and articles. It was not until Chinese started trading with its neighboring countries that jadeite from Burma began to appear in China’s gem history. The distinction between jadeite and nephrite was not made until the late 1700s when there was sufficient scientific knowledge to find the differences between the two stones. Thus, nephrite is the truly original jade in the greatest and most famous of all Chinese jade history. A Chinese saying goes: “Gold has value; jade is invaluable.” Jade has been used by mankind for various purposes since prehistoric times. To primitive people, jade was the ideal material for making tools and other artifacts. Its toughness made it the best material for such purposes. Later, they used it for jewelry and other ornamental objects. Chinese people
believed jade had supernatural powers. Since the earliest time of Chinese history, jade was used as a protector against devils. Gradually, jade became known as a symbol of peace, kindness, elegance and eternity. In China, people believed that jade can bring safety, wealth, health, longevity and peace of mind. Jade is an ancient symbol of love and virtue. It was not just for jewelry. The Chinese have carved jade continuously from 5,000 B.C. to the present. Chinese love jade because not only for its beauty, but also more importantly for its culture, meaning and humanity. The following is a Chinese translation: “The wise have likened jade to virtue. For them, its polish and brilliancy represent the whole of purity; its perfect compactness and extreme hardness represent the sureness of intelligence; its angles, which do not cut, although they seem sharp, represent justice; the pure and prolonged sound, which it gives forth when one strikes it, represents music. Its color represents loyalty; its interior flaws, always showing themselves through the transparency, call to mind sincerity; its iridescent brightness represents heaven; its admirable substance, born of mountain and of water, represents the earth. Used alone without ornamentation it represents chastity. The price that the entire world attaches to it represents the truth. To support these comparisons, the Book of Verse says: ‘When
I think of a wise man, his merits appear to be like jade.” The pre-Columbian Indians brought jade carving to its peak on this continent. The Indians of the northwest coast of America were skilled jade craftsmen. Jade was used by various tribes ranging from the northern coast of Washington to the Eskimos of the far north. But the work of these tribes did not reach the peak attained by the natives of Mexico and Central America. How did Jade get its name? Early Spaniards who conquered Mexico brought back a beautiful green stone that was valued highly by the native Mexicans. The Spaniards called the new stone “piedra de ijada,” literally “stone of the flank or loin.” The French translated the Spanish name as “pierre de l’ejade.” Either through typographical errors or common usage the word was altered to “le jade.” The English simply changed it to jade. And so, it is today. Jade comes in two varieties: Jadeite (hard jade) and Nephrite (soft jade). They are both regarded in China as zhen yu, “genuine jade.” The most recognized color for jade is emerald green; however, jade is found in white, gray, yellow, orange and violet. Nephrite is usually only green and creamy white while jadeite can have the full range of colors. The value of jade lies in its hardness. Jadeites are the ones with a solid texture and a hardness of six (on a scale of 1 — 10). The more valuable vari-
eties, such as green jade, may be as hard as eight or nine. Nephrite jade has a hardness below six and can be more easily carved. The value of precious jade lies in its natural color and hue. Some are as white as snow, others are brightly red and still others alluringly green. The rarest and most expensive jade is called Imperial Jade. To qualify as Imperial Jade, the stone must be an emerald green, quite translucent and compare favorably in color with an emerald of good quality. Imperial Jade got its name (and distinction) from the ancient Chinese imperial court which reserved the finest jade for the use of royalty, hence the term “imperial.” In China the Jade Road came into existence long before the Silk Road did. The Kunlun mountains around the Hotan area produced the jade that formed the Jade Road more than 3000 to 12,000 years ago. The finest of all jadeite, of all jade that matters, is the emerald green jadeite of Myanmar (Burma). Today, 90 percent of jadeite jade is produced in this country. A gigantic jade boulder, weighing more than 175 tons has been discovered in Phakant, Kachin State, northern Myanmar (Burma). The boulder is valued at $170 million and is regarded as the world’s largest. The boulder will be sent off to China where it will be carved into sculptures and jewelry. In Myanmar a gem company has started building an underground museum in northern Myanmar to display a 3,000-ton jade boulder. The jade boulder was discovered in Kachin State, source of some of the world’s finest jade,
and donated to the government in 2002. Dao Trong Cuong purchased a 35-ton jade boulder in Myanmar for $2 million and imported it to Vietnam. A team of 50 artists and sculptors plan to carve a jade Buddha that will weigh 20 tons and take two years to complete. Many gem materials are mistaken for jade since they bear a close resemblance to jade in color and hardness. They have been referred to as “near jade,” false jade,” “imitation jade” and “pseudojades.” Glass and plastic are the principal materials used to imitate jade. Plastics are too light and too easily scratched to be mistaken for jade. Glass can be made to imitate almost any type of natural jade. Most of the glass offered as jade is too perfect, and that will alert the skilled purchaser. Glass imitations usually have minute bubbles seen under low power magnification. Pseudojades are not jade and never will be. Pseudojades are stones that look and feel like jade but are really other known minerals. Generally speaking, the best quality jade is used for jewelry or small carvings. The less costly grades are used for larger ornamental objects and carvings. Jadeite is rarer than nephrite and is, therefore, regarded as more precious. Nephrite deposits have been found in China, New Zealand, Russia, Guatemala and the Swiss Alps. Dark green jade, so-called Canada Jade, is also found in Western Canada. Jadeite is found in China, Russia and Guatemala, but the best stones come from Burma. Jade is also found in Central America, Mexico and the United States.
Gaming
Thoughts on the game of Craps….Chapter Two Craps has declined remarkably as a money-maker for casinos. In 1985, it generated nearly 27 percent of all table win. In 2015, it contributed less than 9 percent to total table win. Roulette has increased both its revenue share and unit share by about 50 percent since then. (UNLV gaming research -2015) Through research and analytics which I have personally contributed over the past 40 years, I can honestly say that there are

very definable reasons for this and that there is a huge bubble that is available to the casinos if they understand the new generation of gamblers and what they want. If humans can dive under the ocean deeper each year by training and by holding their breath and a lady can roll the dice in Atlantic City for over four hours without throwing the bad number then why not recreate and grow the sport along with the Karmic and Intuitive aspects of the game….
millennials are begging for it and the casinos have seen a large drop in craps revenues over the past 30 years….from 27 percent of revenues to less than 9 percent of total revenues. Maybe this is because less than 3 percent of the people that gamble play craps….maybe that is because no one has ever given them the education and understanding of what they are dealing with in the game of craps and all the nuances and environmental factors
that can also aid their betting and ultimately their winnings. Over the course of these chapters we will discuss many things that influence the crap game. I for one believe very strongly that this game holds with it a different set of factors including the environmental. How many times have we seen someone throw the dice off the table and the next roll they roll the Bad Number? My 40 years of keeping statistics will tell you that this happens a majority of the

time ….then why do people keep throwing the dice off the table? because they don’t understand the entire game. In the next chapter I will give the many do’s and don’ts while playing craps that will enhance your chances of winning and lower the amounts you lose playing this great game! and mine were closing near Rollinsville around the same time that Wink was constructing the lodge, he purchased 15 worker’s cabins and moved them to his property to be used, along with six others he built himself. These included the orange cabin, where he lived while building the lodge; a honeymoon cabin; the tin house; a three-plex cabin, and the tavern. Wink advertised nationally in Ebony magazine and the lodge drew people from across the country. Not only did the lodge boast an amazing location and view, but was infamous for its delicious fare. Brownie, Wink’s cook for many years, kept chicken coups in the backyard, the chickens in the closest coup ready for frying. Brownie guaranteed customers could pick their chicken and it would be ready to eat in one hour. In the 1940’s and ‘50s, as many as 100 people a day traveled up to the mountains to eat Winks barbecue, and famous musicians who played engagements in the Five Points clubs in Denver, including Count Basie and Lena Horne, stayed at Winks.
After Winks died in 1965, the business diminished. By 1971, his wife, Melba, had sold all of his Lincoln Hills properties. However, subsequent owners did not want his story forgotten. Bertha Calloway, a black historian who bought Winks Lodge with her husband, managed to get it listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2014, an amendment was added to the National Register listing for the property, including a boundary expansion of the Winks Lodge property and an elevated level of significance, deeming even more of the Lincoln Hills resort community as “historic.” More importantly, until 2014, Winks Lodge was listed as significant only to Colorado history. The 2014 update provides extensive research that demonstrates Winks Lodge not only important to Gilpin County and not only important to Colorado—it’s significant to the history of the entire country, and now the U.S. Department of the Interior, the National Park Service, and the National Register program, collectively acknowledging, promoting and honoring that significance. In 2006, Beckwourth Outdoors, a Denver organization devoted to providing outdoor recreation and mountain experiences for black youngsters, bought Winks Lodge. With help from Colorado State Historical Funds today the Lodge has been returned to its original splendor and is part of the Lincoln Hills Cares program for intercity youth. For information on the programs and events at Lincoln Hills, check them out on the web at Lincolnhillscares.org. The ghosts of Christmas past Holiday has dark—even frightening—origins
For most people, Christmas is a joyful time. Families gather around a tree (be it evergreen, spruce or plastic) for good food, gift giving, songs and allaround good cheer. Centered on childhood, religion and good By Rosemary Fetter callieanne_9@msn.com old-fashioned commercialism, our Christmas is all about giving, loving and pleasing others, as it should be. But the holiday has darker origins that predate our modern notions of peace on earth and goodwill to men. The winter solstice celebration dates to earliest recorded time when A Christmas scene, circa 1900. sacrifice and burning of the yule log ensured the return of the sun. slave changed places, engaging in Druids wore holly sprigs in their boisterous revelry, overindulgence hair during rituals since the pointy in food and drink, enthusiastic matleaves supposedly afforded protec- ing behavior, property destruction tion against evil spirits. and general insanity. Even so, during the From Dec. 17 to Dec. 23, master and first few centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire, the 12 days of Christmas (Dec. 25-Jan. 5) looked more like Halloween. The superstitious, which included almost everyone, believed that forces of evil roamed the earth during this time and were intent on counterbalancing with the benevolent appearance of the savior. Long periods of darkness played havoc on our imaginative ancestors who saw witches and malevolent spirits in the twilight shadows and flickering firelight. Nervous occupants painted the sign of the cross on doorways, burned logs in the fireplace all night and avoided venturing into the darkness for fear St. Nicholas and Black Peter. The Dutch Black (not always unjustiPeter was less frightening than the goat-like fied) they might never return. Krampas.
PAGE 18
The Germans were among the first to put a more positive spin on Christmas, planting fir saplings and decorating trees with apples, roses and paper in honor of St. Boniface, who had converted them to Christianity. During the 4th century, legends arose around a Turkish bishop, later known as St. Nicholas, who brought gifts to children on his feast day, Dec. 6. The kindly bishop would have been amazed to discover that in some countries he was accompanied by a black devil figure called Krampas or Black Rupert with horns and a long tongue. His job was to deliver birch rods and ashes to naughty boys and girls. Some truly frightening postcards printed in Germany around 1910 pictured Krampas carrying away misbehaving children to some unhappy fate. In the 1890s, a popular depiction of the German Christmasman or Weihnachtsmann, a Protestant incarnation of St. Nicholas, carried a tree in one hand and a switch in the other. German Protestants also came up with a more kindly image of the Christchild or Kriskindl as a benevolent gift giver. By the time Kris made it to America, he became Kris Kringle, by then just another name for Santa Claus. The Puritans who settled early America shunned Christmas, which they considered pagan nonsense. From 1659 to 1691, its observance was banned in Boston. In the early 19th century, Christmas in New York looked more like
Saturnalia, with drunken roughnecks carousing in the streets, making as much noise and causing as much trouble as possible. In 1828, the New York City Council formed the city’s first police force in response to a Christmas riot. And then miraculously, the holiday got a makeover. In 1822, Dr. Clement Clark Moore, a classical scholar, penned The Night Before Christmas (or A Visit from St. Nicholas) to entertain his children. A friend mailed a copy to a newspaper, and before long the poem became famous. Along with the angels, the merchants rejoiced as the toy industry boomed. Moore may have based his poem on Washington Irving’s 1809 chronicle Knickerbocker’s History of New York, in which he describes the saint flying over the rooftops and dropping presents down chimneys. He may have also drawn inspiration from a small lithographed book called The Children’s Friend written in 1821. On the cover, an anonymous New York author depicted “old Santeclaus” wearing a fur top hat and riding in a sled filled with presents labeled “rewards.” Interestingly, his sleigh was driven by a single reindeer. Moore’s poem described Santa as an elf with a white beard who dressed in furs, smoked a pipe and drove a tiny sleigh guided by eight reindeer with colorful names like Donder (later Donner) and Blitzen. Over the next few decades, artists depicted Santa’s appearance in various ways—from a deranged-looking dwarf to a fur-covered gnome wearing yellow tights.
The definitive image came from cartoonist Thomas Nash, who began drawing illustrations of Santa delivering gifts to the troops during the Civil War. Santa gained weight over the next few decades until he looked like a prosperous 19th century businessman in a red suit. That particular version stays with us, despite a modern aversion to the overweight. Although Queen Victoria and Prince Albert may have fostered the concept of Christmas as a family affair, Americans took it to the next level. A woodcut of the British royal family gathered around a Christmas tree, published in The Illustrated London News December 1848, was reproduced in the popular Godey’s Ladies Magazine two years later, minus the queen’s crown and the prince’s mustache. The Americanized version became the first widespread image of a decorated Christmas tree in the United States. Along with Godey’s, other publications provided helpful suggestions for decorations, parties and even homemade gifts around the holiday season. By the early 1900s, all the recognizable Christmas symbols were in place, minus grandiose lighting displays, Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the latter created by Montgomery Ward in 1939. Obviously, Christmas has come a long way since those early pagan festivals. Although people often complain that the true meaning of the holiday has been lost, the reverse is true. Our modern celebration may have flaws, but it beats the more somber Christmas of our forbearers.
In this pre-World War II Christmas postcard, a more benevolent Santa hands out toys, rather than spankings. However, naughty and nice is still with us.
