Littleton finds new fire chief in Florida Armstrong chosen after national search
By Peter Jones Littleton has gone to Florida to find its next fire chief after an extensive search and putting out internal fires over the department’s leadership and future. Outsider Christopher Armstrong will be the next to take the helm at Littleton Fire Rescue, City Manager Michael Penny announced last week. The new chief will come on board Jan. 20. “Chris Armstrong is an exciting and talented leader who will bring a fresh vision and perspective to the department,” Penny said in a statement. “He has a track record of innovation that resulted in improved response times, increased accountability, establishing short and longterm strategic goals, and obtaining

Armstrong earned a bachelor’s Council, Littleton residents, area degree in occupational health and fire chiefs, LFR employees and city safety and a master’s degree in department directors. Armstrong
won out over several finalists, including LFR Division Chief Wayne Zygowicz. Penny said Armstrong will soon lead LFR through a strategic planning process – one that comes at a time when the department is contemplating a merger with South Metro Fire Rescue. “We are incredibly excited to work on this project with Chris and our partners,” the city manager said. Chief John Mullin announced his retirement, effective Dec. 31, after a 40-year career, two thirds of which were in Littleton. His departure came after a firefighters association had voted a lack of confidence in his leadership. LFR provides emergency response services to the 220,000 citizens of Littleton and also serves the greater Littleton Fire Protection District and the Highlands Ranch Metropolitan District.

Creek students are ‘Colorado Strong’ and ‘Warrior Strong’ By Tom Barry On Dec. 18, around 400 students from Cherry Creek and Arapahoe high schools gathered to support the Arapahoe community after the Dec. 13 shooting at the school. Students came together for camaraderie and to reflect upon Claire Davis, the 17-yearold shooting victim, who later died from her injuries Dec. 21. Over the years, the two schools have fiercely competed on the court, on the fields and in other academic endeavors. Life was put into a different perspective, Dec. 13, during the lunch hour at Arapahoe.
Cross-town rivals come together
“Many of the kids from Arapahoe and Cherry Creek high schools know one another from activities and living in many of the same neighborhoods,” said Penny Malloy, Cherry Creek High School’s spokeswoman.
She is very familiar with Creek, as she has two daughters attending the school. This event was student-driven and many of the Creek students present wore Warrior black in honor of their cross-town rivals, opposed to the typical Bruins red, according to Malloy. There were no parents involved in the non-official school event, while numerous faculty and staff attended at the end of the school day. “This was not meant to be a Creek promotion, it was about the kids,” said Malloy. Throughout the day, Creek students who organized the event “passed the bucket” to classmates collecting money for the Davis family’s favorite charities. By the end of the day, the Bruins had raised $2,000. While the actual event around 3 p.m. in the afternoon only lasted about 20 minutes, many of the students remained at the Quad area well past 4 p.m.
“We put aside our competitive issues and are one with Colorado Strong and Warrior Strong,” said Creek’s Malloy.
Balloons released for Claire
“The Creek community felt a need to support the Arapahoe community and felt that a balloon release was the most appropriate event to hold given the current place in the Warriors healing process,” said Teller Cunningham, 18, Creek’s senior class president, who began to organize the event on Dec. 16 with four other classmates. “I was very familiar with a number of Arapahoe High School students from Denver K-Life, a Christian youth ministry focusing on deepening relationships with youth in the community toward Christ,” said Cunningham. Students inflated 350 balloons and released them into the blue sky with positive thoughts.

Littleton Hospital and Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children work together Littleton Adventist Hospital has announced that it has achieved formal designation as a Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children clinical affiliate for pediatric services. This partnership and clinical designation brings together two healthcare leaders that share a commitment to deliver seamless high-value care to the tiniest of patients. RMHC-affiliated physicians are board-certified in their specialties. They have well-established relationships with Littleton Hospital, providing care to patients for more than 15 years. The hospital has a long history of achieving high-quality standards and successfully met the
requirements needed for clinical designation. These evidence-based national standards, including standards developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, are used to monitor clinical quality measures, patient satisfaction, physician participation, protocols, procedures and clinical training. “We have a legacy of excellence in providing emergent and pediatric care close to home. Achieving this clinical designation allows kids to receive excellent care here in the community, without being far away from family and friends,” said Brett Spenst, president of Littleton Hospital. The affiliation places a priority
on treating kids close to home. A child may be transferred to RMHC when a higher level of care is clinically necessary, and that child will return to LAH for continued care as appropriate. “We’re delighted to see this important milestone in our expanding collaboration with Centura Health for high-quality pediatric care in communities they serve. Both of our organizations place a high value on expanding access to pediatric care while minimizing cost, as we enhance services for children by optimizing existing infrastructure and clinical resources,” said Mimi Roberson, president of Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children.

Creek embraces Arapahoe community
By Tom Barry Cherry Creek High School students once again united to raise money, Dec. 20, for the Claire Davis family charities and express concern for students at Arapahoe High after the tragedy the prior week. Creek’s Student Senate members wanted to accomplish something productive in Davis’s honor and decided to raise money for her family’s preferred charities. Creek promoted a “Lunch for Claire” encouraging students to donate the money they would have spent for lunch.
Electronic billboards, along with word of mouth, promoted the event on a cold afternoon. The event was planned to take place in the Quad but due to the chilling cold weather the event was moved inside. Students were offered free hot chocolate by the volunteer committee, which was stationed in the activities office of the expansive school campus. “I know a lot of kids from Arapahoe and it’s been hard for them and we really wanted to help,” said Teller Cunningham, the senior class president who along with other
members of the student senate organized activities. “Our primary goal is to support the Arapahoe students emotionally and by connecting with them more than just raising money.” In this last week, Creek students and staff raised well more than $3,500 in the name of Claire Davis and Arapahoe High. The school will take the funds and deposit a check directly into the bank account set up for the Davis family charities. “It’s letting Arapahoe know we care about them,” said Penny Malloy, the school’s spokeswoman.

nursing staff, and Claire’s fighting spirit, her injuries were too severe and the most advanced medical treatments could not prevent this tragic loss of life. Claire’s death is immensely heartbreaking for our entire community, our staff and our families.” Davis’s family also issued a statement: “Although we have lost our precious daughter, we will always be grateful for the indelible journey she took us on over the last 17 years. We were truly blessed to be Claire’s parents. The grace, laughter and light she brought to this world will not be extinguished by her death. To the contrary, it will only get stronger. Last week was truly a paradox in that we lost our daughter, yet we witnessed the wonderful love that exists in the world through the tremendous outpouring of support we received.” Minutes after Davis was shot, first-responders carried her to a waiting ambulance that rushed her to the hospital, where an emergency medical team was anticipating her arrival. Davis remained in a coma throughout the next eight days. Davis’s AHS classmates and staff created a makeshift monument and encouraged people to pray for their classmate. A number
of vigils followed. Hundreds of well-wishers have visited the memorial, centered on a fence along Dry Creek Road in Centennial, near the intersection with University Boulevard. Students from the school and others from throughout the Front Range brought signed posters and notes, while others left flowers and lit candles.
Claire Davis Memorial Celebration of Life Jan. 1, 2014
The family of Claire Davis and leaders of the National Western Stock Show and Complex announced that a Celebration of the Life of Claire Davis will be held on Jan. 1, 2014 at 1 p.m. at the National Western Events Center. The National Western Events Center is where Claire competed in a horse show during the 2013 National Western Stock Show and was scheduled to compete in 2014. The 108th National Western Stock Show in January will be honoring Davis by naming a horse show in her honor. The popular Hunter and Jumper event known as the Gambler’s Choice will be named the Claire Davis Memorial Gambler’s Choice Horse Show for the 2014 National Western. A moment of silence will be observed for Claire prior to all ticketed horse show events in the Events Center at this year’s Stock
Show. In addition, the Events Center will dawn a large yellow ribbon in memory of Davis throughout the Stock Show, from Jan. 11-26. Paul Andrews, President/CEO of the National Western Stock Show and Complex stated, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Davis family at this difficult time. Claire’s passion and love of horses and competition embodied what we deeply value at the National Western Stock Show. She was an excellent equestrian and a great example for all youth in the world with her positive attitude and leadership. We are honored to help celebrate her life through the numerous horse show events during our 2014 Show.” Desiree David said, “The National Western does a wonderful job of supporting young equestrians, like Claire. We’re so appreciative that they’ve agreed to host this special celebration of Claire’s life and for everything they’re doing to honor Claire’s memory.” There will not be a charge for attending the event on Jan. 1, but to ensure that the facility’s seating capacity is not exceeded, all those planning to attend will need to have a ticket. Tickets will only be issued at www.nationalwestern.com or the National Western Box Office beginning Dec. 27 at 10 a.m.

Sheriff’s deputies arrest man for luring child Arvada resident thought he was communicating with 14-year-old By Peter Jones An Arvada man has been arrested for Internet-luring of a child as the result of an undercover operation by Arapahoe County Sheriff’s investigators.
Byron Allen Creach, 24, was being held last week in the county jail on a $50,000 bond charged with three felonies, including attempted sexual assault on a child. The sheriff’s Internet Crimes Against Children team began its investigation of Creach in October using the online profile of a 14-year-old girl. According to investigators, during Internet communica-
tions, Creach explicitly described proposed sexual acts and sent nude photos to the deputy whom he believed to be an underage girl. On Dec. 13, sheriff’s deputies, in cooperation with the Arvada Police Department, arranged to meet Creach near his home in Arvada, where the suspect was expecting to meet and have a sexual encounter with the 14-year-old. Surveil-
lance and arrest teams were standing by when Creach met the person he believed to be the girl. The suspect, who was taken into custody without incident, was discovered to be a registered sex offender for an earlier incest charge. According to Creach’s Twitter account, he suffers from Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism.

budget year. A mill levy, when multiplied by the value of a property being taxed, specifies a property’s tax liability. Centennial’s mill levy is assessed on the county’s real estate valuation of every property in the city. The annual council-approved mill must be certified by the Arapahoe County Board of Commissioners. Centennial’s net assessed property valuations increased by about 3.7 percent this year, according to the Arapahoe County Assessor’s Office.
Centennial’s 2014 budget approved by the council last month projected that the city would garner nearly $8.2 million in propertytax revenue next year, 1 percent of which will be kept by Arapahoe County as a collection fee. According to a report by Dawn Priday, Centennial’s finance director, the 5.073 mill levy and increased property valuations will produce approximately $7,000 more than what the city had budgeted for in 2014.

Speak softly and carry a big stick KINDLING History Lesson By Robert Sweeney
Mort, Mort, Mort, well you and Edie have had another monumental Christmas party with a few hundred of your friends attending. I think of you in that freezing Battle of the Bulge during World War II. The freezing temperatures we experienced were just a reminder of how cold it can be. I can’t imagine living in a foxhole or trench in the wet snow and cold, as you and your fellow soldiers endured for our freedoms. We defeated the Nazi regime and your survivors returned home to begin normal lives and make great contributions to the development of a post-war America. A great many veterans went to college under the GI Bill and both colleges and students blossomed. I know you don’t like Iran and the threat they pose to the world with their nuclear ambitions.
However, I don’t believe that we should launch another Middle East war to stop them from having nuclear weapons. They probably already have them purchased from the North Koreans, Chinese or Russians. I don’t even know why they are bothering to attempt to build them; they can buy them with their massive oil checks. It is time to bring our soldiers home; they have been on foreign soil for more than 10 years now and the Islamic world hates us more than ever and wants Westerners out of their countries. We would not want Syrian or Iraqi armies in Texas and they don’t want us in their countries. Shades of the great Crusades where our European ancestors attempted to capture Jerusalem and spread Christianity to these sandy wind swept desserts. It didn‘t work then and it hasn’t worked in this century. We would be far better off to send bread and jobs than armies. For the most part, we’re in a religious conflict that we cannot win with Christ versus Muhammed. Americans put country ahead of religion, but the Islamic folks put their religion first and foremost. America needs to keep a strong military force and protect our allies and treaties that we have in many places. But we no longer need to be the aggressor in police actions that end in failure and embarrassment for our nation.
Mort Marks pens important column
The Villager is a tabloid newspaper versus the traditional broadsheet newspapers, such as The Denver Post. The famed Rocky Mountain News that is now extinct was also a tabloid. The beauty of the smaller size is you can sit at the breakfast or dinner table and eat while you read the newspaper. In the new digital age I don’t believe that most people have a laptop or computer near their plate, but with the absence of tabloid newspapers, anything is possible. I took last week’s issue of The Villager to the nearby China Lee restaurant at noon today and flipped through the pages. We all see parts of the newspaper as it is prepared, but it is a real pleasure to see the final printed copy fresh from Signature Offset with all of the color and people enjoying their events. I’ve read Mort Marks columns and been a personal
Bottom line is that we’re far too kind of a nation and people to be cruel oppressors like the Roman Empire.
friend of he and Edie for 30 years now. I don’t think Mort ever penned a better column than in the issue of Dec. 19. The column reviews what none of us will ever have to endure in the way Mort did as a young soldier fighting in World War II. This review of the winter Battle of The Bulge that occurred at Christmas time in 1944 should be read by every student and adult. Mort was there and captures the moment of the American GI’s in a cold winter death struggle against the Nazi regime. Mort doesn’t talk about himself, but the spirit of the American military forces, the bravery of the 101st Airborne and five U.S. Army divisions. I read and re-read the column thinking about those dark days in December 1944 and the eventual American victory leading to the end of the war. Villager readers have enjoyed a real treat by having that special column arrive in the mail.
As President Teddy Roosevelt told us almost 100 years ago, “Speak softly and carry a big stick.”
Two compassion stories for our cynical world REMARKS
By Mort Marks
In today’s cynical world, stories about man’s capacity for sacrifice, devotion, compassion and decency are too often ignored. Forgotten is: “The bread we cast on waters may come back in the form of miracles.” Here, for example, are two true stories of miracles that developed because of someone’s compassion and simply decency. The first concerns a trip taken in the late 19th century by an aristocratic member of Parliament who was traveling to Scotland to make a speech. Alighting from the train in Edinburgh, he took a carriage southward for destination, but the carriage Byhis Shirley Smith got stuck in the mud. It’s that time of the year again when truckloads of invitations are dumped on the doorstep and you’re forced to ditch your Juicy sweats for spandex and a pair of sparkly shoes. Following are my tried and true tips to make this holiday season the most festive ever, especially if you’re new to the neighborhood or spend a lot of time in the garage whittling Star Wars figurines for family and friends. When choosing which party to attend on any given night, steer clear of the district attorney’s house. Nobody wants to hear that you lit it up with the county DA, and by nobody I mean anyone who’s ever been the subject of a body cavity search or watched an episode of Breaking Bad. Partying with any law enforcement officer will make your friends feel
sick and squeamish, especially the ones who accidentally forgot to pay child support for the past five years. Always take a posse to a holiday party, especially when the invitation has an ice luge on the cover. Generally speaking, people with enough money to blow on things like disposable sculptures don’t have a lot of friends because they’re too busy making enough money to blow on things like disposable sculptures. You’ll be doing the host a favor by bringing thrill seeking add-ons who’ll K.O. all the Finlandia in the house and yell “I love reindeer games!” at the top of their lungs every five minutes. Everyone has a creepy uncle who doesn’t get out of the house much because he’s too busy grooming his stuffed hamster collection. To cut back on those noxious formaldehyde fumes coming from the basement, send him over to the DA’s party with your regrets. By doing so, you’ll simultaneously perform a random act of kindness and keep your family’s name off the police scanner in 2014. It might be nice to tape a note to his back with his iPhone passcode just in case he gets lost or someone wants to do a random screen shot search. When it’s time to carb load, skip the prime rib station and
head straight to the host’s pantry. That’s where you’ll find the good stuff, like Funions and the adult toys Santa plans to put in a secret stocking the kids have already found, taken pictures of, and Snapchatted around the entire middle school with the tag “My parents know how to party!” It’s important to hydrate at holiday social events because the secret to getting asked back next year is to look really hot. To give your skin a soft, dewy glow, try supplementing Jager Bombs with a Michelob Ultra every now and again. A 5:1 ratio is usually the perfect mix for me, but you might want to go something like 7:1 on account of all that excess hair. When the party’s winding down and it’s time to go home? Everyone loves unexpected overnight guests, especially the ones who pass out on the ice luge. To make yourself a little more inconspicuous and give your host a holiday surprise in the morning, try crawling into the dog kennel. It’s cozy, padded, and if you happen to throw up a little while you’re in there? You and my creepy uncle will be the only ones who know. Stacie Chadwick is a writer who lives in Castle Pines. Cherry Hills open-space policy and vision topic of first January session By Jan Wondra A major public hearing regarding its vision and public policy for creating and managing open space will be the primary topic of the next Cherry Hills Village City Council meeting, Jan. 7. “We’ll begin with a 6 p.m. study session on open space, then in our 6:30 p.m. general City Council session, we will hold a lengthy public hearing allowing our citizens to express their opinions and thoughts about how we should proceed on this most important issue for Cherry Hills Village, said Mayor Doug Tisdale. Open space in Cherry Hills Village has been on the table frequently this past year, as the city commissioned the Quincy Farm Visioning Committee to develop a long-term vision for the generous legacy gift from resident Kat Anderson. The work of the Public Art Commission has continued, placing major public art in Three Pond Park and at the corner of Quincy Avenue and Happy Canyon Road. Among the long-term decisions before the Village are such questions as how much open space to protect? How should the city use that open space, as natural environment, as recreational space, as setting for public art and or as community gathering space? Where should the city focus its efforts to acquire and protect open space? With the report from the Quincy Farm Visioning Committee, also due in late January, the council deemed this first public session of the year as vital to provide direction for its open space decision-making process.
2014 budget passed
A major piece of business for the city’s final meeting of the
year was the second and final read of the 2014 operating budget, which passed unanimously. Two public sessions preceded the vote; a Sept. 17 study session and a first read of the bill at the Nov. 19 council meeting. The primary discussion, prior to the vote on the roughly $6.3 million budget, centered on a question from the November session; whether to call out any additional ticket tax revenue more than $150,000 to flow directly to the Kat Anderson - Quincy Farm Open Space fund. “My thought is to add an entry into the budget once revenue reaches that level, said Councilman Alex Brown. Tisdale said, “I’m hearing that we can create a mechanic to have the extra income, should we receive it, set aside for open space. But this relates to the discussion we are going to have on Jan. 7 about our open space in Cherry Hills Village. I’d encourage the council to pass the budget now, then we can address this specifically in January. There is also a question regarding extra revenue coming from the BMW Golf Tournament, which could flow to this fund. “For the record, said Councilman Scott Roswell, “I don’t want to lose sight of what we had talked about, from a broad policy decision aspect. I think we should at least add a revenue placeholder for open space. The question is do we call it an ‘excise tax’, or an admission tax, so we follow correct code language? Brown suggested adding a placeholder line item populated with $100, for the time being, amending the motion for first read passage. It was seconded by Councilwoman Katy Brown, and passed unanimously.
Public Works facility review continues
Public Works Director Jay Goldie provided an overview for a possible relocation of the public works facility. Cherry Hills City Council has quietly begun a review of land use, specifically the valuable land underlying its public works facilities adjacent to City Hall at 2450 E. Quincy Ave. The land, in the very center of the village, is valuable. Its placement, maintenance sheds in the midst of the space containing City Hall, the Joint Public Safety Facility housing both the Cherry Hills Police Department and South Metro Fire and Rescue, and now the Alan Hutto Open Space, begs the question; is this the best use of this real estate? The review of possible solutions is moving forward, with several possible options for relocation identified and being prepared for discussion.
Green Building Codes adopted
Rob Zucaro, Community Development Director, reviewed the National Green Building standard, which would create a Cherry Hills Village building permit rebate program for residential owners who comply with the standard. The city has been reviewing the green building code changes since last May. The purpose of green building codes is to reduce the effect of building construction on the environment. Moving forward, the codes would apply to new homes, not remodels. “Historically, new construction is 50 percent of our building permit revenue, said Zucaro. The codes passed unanimously on first reading.

The Colorado State University System announced a new educational partnership with CH2M HILL, a global leader in full-service engineering. Through the CSU Denver South initiative, CH2M HILL will host two graduate-level courses that are part of a systems engineering program offered by the CSU College of Engineering. The four-course program – two classes taught face-to-face on CH2M HILL’s Englewood campus and two classes available online – covers the core curriculum needed for completion of a master’s or Ph.D. in systems engineering from CSU in Fort Collins. Classes begin January 2014 and are open to all qualified professionals in aerospace, energy, environment, biosciences, cyber/ software, or related sectors that are seeking to expand their career horizons. Details are available at www. online.colostate.edu/certificates/ systems-engineering. “The CSU System is tremendously proud to partner with CH2M HILL to bring this unique and innovative higher education concept to the South Denver region,” said CSU System Chancellor Mike Martin. “By pairing the quality of CSU’s top-ranked engineering program with the international and national reputation of CH2M HILL, CSU Denver South will be able to provide convenient educational opportunities to students where they live and work, and clearly address the workforce needs of local industry.” Headquartered in Englewood, CH2M HILL is a global leader in consulting, design, design-build, operations, and program management for government, civil, industrial and energy clients. With $7 billion in revenue and 28,000 employees, the firm’s work is concentrated in the areas of water, transportation, environmental, energy, facilities and resources. “CH2M HILL is honored to be partnering with Chancellor Martin and the CSU College of Engineering on their new graduate-level certificate program,” said CH2M HILL’s Transportation President Terry Ruhl. “This
represents a world-class opportunity in the South Denver area for students and practitioners to become familiar with the high-demand field of systems engineering and program management. As the No. 1 program management firm as ranked by Engineering News-Record, CH2M HILL knows the value of this course work and experience in the global marketplace. And as a graduate of CSU, I know first-hand the value this institution brings in developing the next generation of innovators, entrepreneurs, and corporate and civic leaders.” CSU Denver South is a strategic initiative of the CSU System aimed at serving students and the business community in Denver’s South Metro region through a new educational model that will embed classes and programs with local corporate partners. The systems engineering program is the first opportunity to be offered through CSU Denver South. In fall 2014, CSU Denver South will coordinate with the three CSU System campuses and other academic partners to offer degree programs in business and nursing, with the prospect of adding additional degrees and certificates based on community demand. Participants in the systems engineering program will learn con-
cepts such as risk analysis, project management, support systems and engineering processes. The program is designed to prepare engineers or other professionals to lead systems engineering development from concept creation to production. The engineering program is being led by Dr. Ron Sega, a former NASA astronaut and director of the CSU systems engineering program. Face-to-face courses that will be offered at CH2M HILL include: • “Foundations of Systems Engineering” ENGR 501, Thursdays (Jan. 23 – May 15, 2014), 5:15 – 8 p.m. • “Engineering Project and Program Management” MECH 501, Wednesdays (Jan. 22 – May 14, 2014), 5:15 – 8 p.m. “We are honored that the business community in Denver’s South Metro region approached the CSU System, and we’re committed to bringing real value to local students, families and industry in this fast-growing part of Colorado,” Sega said. “The systems engineering program truly fills a strategic need for the region’s business community, and I’m excited about the opportunity to work with CH2M HILL to launch and grow this new endeavor.”

The buzz of Englewood since 1909
Sam Hill’s Barber Shop taking its cut for a century
By Peter Jones When businessman Mike Oller gets his turn in the chair for a trim, it doesn’t take long for the customer and his barber to cut loose. “What did you think of the Broncos game last night?” barber Rick Lozano asks. “You know, we haven’t had a defense all year,” Oller rejoins with a sigh. “That was pitiful,” Lozano agrees, as he cuts back the hair around Oller’s ears. The blame for the plummeting can be placed squarely on defense coordinator Jack Del Rio, says the conventional wisdom in Sam Hill’s Barber Shop. For more than a century, this South Broadway hangout has been a sort of town hall for sports, sex, business, politics and everything in between. The unofficial “experts” are any
man – and we do mean man – who happens to wander into the oldest continuously operating business in the city of Englewood. “Hang out in a barbershop. I hear anything and everything here,” said Lozano, the fourth and latest owner in Sam Hill’s 104year history. The shop’s who’s who of barber-chair experts has included the city’s mayors, area business leaders and local media figures, ranging from The Fox’s Michael Floorwax to Denver television’s Blinky the Clown. “I had a customer who was 99 years old, who just passed away. He’d been coming in here since the ‘40s,” Lozano said. The customers you won’t find waxing nostalgic are women. Sam Hill’s has not cut a woman’s hair in decades – not since former owner Dick Konecne suffered a particularly fastidious female customer, grabbed the nearest razor blade and scraped the word “women” from the shop window. “If a woman sat down in my chair, count on a half hour to an
hour at least. I can usually do a man’s hair in 15 to 20 minutes,” said 49-year-old Lozano. “I don’t feel comfortable cutting a woman’s hair. I haven’t done it for 25 years.” Like Floyd’s iconic barbershop on The Andy Griffith Show, Sam Hill’s is as much a social hall as a haircutting establishment. Anyone who recalls the chaos that ensued in Mayberry when Floyd hired a pretty manicurist will get the idea. This boy’s club may raise the hair of political correctness, but that is part of its charm, according to some longtime customers at a shop where little has changed since Franklin Roosevelt was in the White House. [Note: The tubs from Sam’s days as a bathhouse were removed at least a decade before that.] “I like the old setting,” Oller said. “Places like this are as rare as hen’s teeth.” Seventy-year-old Alan Pasqua has been getting his cuts at Sam’s – under three of its four owners – since the late 1950s when $1.50 could get a teenager his first flattop. “It’s still the best place to get your haircut,” he said. “Those Super Cuts and Super Great Clips and those places – they don’t know how to cut hair.”
company? The off-color history is just one of the reasons that Sam Hill’s is a kind of male sanctuary that barely
exists in the 21st century. “There’s guys in here who like to grab a Playboy. This is where a

Business gels
To the best of anyone’s knowledge, this unassuming business at 3456 S. Broadway first turned on its pole in 1909 as the OK Barber Shop and Bath House. As rumor has it, someone named John Burgess set up shop to clean the filthy residents of bar-filled Englewood, a trolley ride south of then-dry Denver. Sam Hill bought the place in the mid-1930s and changed the name, which is still painted on the front glass, two ownerships later. “He was a nice guy, really easygoing,” Pasqua said of Hill. At one point, Hill served on the Englewood City Council. “He was pretty heavily into what was happening in the city, so this was probably a pretty good meeting place back in those days,” Lozano said. “If these walls could talk, what would they say?” The real question is could you repeat what they said in mixed

Hill was known to cut hair while the chairs vibrated, never scratching a customer. Hill owned the shop until the late 1950s when Konecne, one of Hill’s staff barbers, bought the business. Children’s Hospital Colorado receives $50,000 childhood cancer research grant The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven and donor-centered charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, is proud to award a one-year infrastructure grant of $50,000 to the Children’s Hospital Colorado. This grant is one of 39 infrastructure grants awarded as part of the Foundation’s fall grant cycle, totaling more than $2.2 million in pediatric oncology research. “This grant will help to provide additional access to clinical trials for the children and young adults that we serve in the Colorado Springs area,” said Dr. Kelly Maloney, associate professor, PediatricsHematology/Oncology at Children’s Hospital Colorado. “We feel this funding will allow us to provide the additional re-
sources needed for growing the clinical research available in the Colorado Springs area. We are grateful to St. Baldrick’s for the funds to further our mission.” Worldwide a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes, and one in five children diagnosed in the U.S. will not survive. A recent study shows that of those that survive, 80 percent will suffer from severe or life-threatening conditions as a result of treatment. “While fewer than 5 percent of adults with cancer participate in a clinical trial, more than 60 percent of childhood cancer patients receive their treatment as part of a clinical trial, designed to offer the best cutting-edge treatment or one that may be better than today’s standard,” said Kathleen Ruddy, chief executive officer for the St. Baldrick’s
Foundation. “The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is proud to fund this latest round of infrastructure grants, many of which will make more clinical trials available for children closer to their homes. window, and Lozano, formerly one of Konecne’s barbers, made the same decision when he took over eight years ago. “Why change something that’s been around here forever?” said Lozano, who has cut hair at Sam Hill’s for nearly a quarter of its history.
No cutting and running
The name is not all that has not changed at what is likely the oldest barbershop in Arapahoe County. A walk through Sam Hill’s Barber Shop is a virtual history of the 20th century as told through the prism of the male haircut. “You’re not going to get more traditional than this. This is old school,” Lozano said. Outside, the barber pole – buried in four inches of concrete – dates to the 1920s. Open the door and see a working cash register from the ‘30s, a lathering machine and hair vacuum from the ‘50s, and a still-working antique hair dryer from the ‘30s. Most interesting to some has been the large metallic ashtrays that still stand in the now-nonsmoking establishment. “Kids will ask parents, what is that?” Lozano said. Even the price of a haircut has not changed much at Sam Hill’s. The cost jumped a buck to $15 eight years ago and Lozano expects to raise it another buck next year, due mostly to rising property taxes. As for the cuts themselves, they have not been altered much at Sam Hill’s – though Lozano has tried his hand at a mohawk occasionally. “I’m pretty traditional,” he said. “I’m not one of those foo-foo style guys.” Lozano attributes the busi-

Sam Hill’s is currently a oneman operation with its owner serving as store manager, barber and conversation arbiter, but that was not always the case. Young Lozano started out on Chair No. 4 during Konecne’s tenure. “He had to let one guy go because he came in drunk. That moved me up to the third chair,” Lozano said with a laugh. “The guy in the second chair had family problems, so he had to escape to Canada, so I moved up to the second chair. The next one is out the door, so I’m getting close to retirement.” Even so, Lozano is confident that the barbershop’s legacy will continue long after his own hairline has receded, literally and figuratively. “Barbers are hard to find,” he said, “but eventually somebody will come along. Somebody’s got to continue the tradition.”

Arapahoe basketball team wins for Claire By Tom Barry The Arapahoe girls basketball team and their fellow students and staff faced an exceptionally challenging and emotionally charged week. At the time of the game, Claire Davis remained in critical condition in a coma at Littleton Adventist Hospital but later died on Dec. 21. The girls’ coaches attempted to provide a rare time when the team could participate in a normal event that was encouraged by counselors one week after the tragedy. The Arapahoe basketball team was introduced one by one, as Dakota Ridge teammates presented each player a long stemmed yellow rose to symbolize friendship before the game. The Warriors quickly fell behind the competitive and quick Eagles team. As the game progressed, the Warriors began to gel and more of their shots began to drop through the net, catching up to the Eagles’ considerable lead. Their defensive effort also improved. Jerry Knafelc, Arapahoe’s head coach, crouched on the floor, sat in his seat or paced up and down the bench calling out instructions to his team. He and his three assistant coaches encouraged and motivated the team throughout the contest. In a sheer sign of determination, the Warriors worked closely as teammates and caught up to the Eagles and the Warriors eventually took the lead. Both teams battled through the game, as the Warriors triumphed over the Eagles 60-50. At the end of the game, Dakota Ridge’s players and coaches graciously congratulated Araphoe. Then there were hugs, smiles and some tears exchanged by Warriors teammates. The culmination of the afternoon was when The Villager organized
a group photo of the team holding their yellow friendship roses. While setting up, the Eagles team came out and joined the girls for the photo. The night prior to the game, the Arapahoe team, parents and coaches had a small holiday gathering featuring a chocolate fountain. Some of the Warriors parents jokingly shared that the reason the girls came out sluggish was because of excessive consumption of chocolate the night before.
Eagles unite for Claire
The Eagles team wore yellow shoestrings in their basketball shoes in honor of Davis and Arapahoe High School. The Dakota Ridge community near Red Rocks, in a unified effort, raised donations at the door. Kids from 4 years old to students and adults anteed up $5 to shoot from half court during halftime festivities. One student who made the shot received meals donated from Chick-fil-A for a year. Revenue from the concession stands also went to the fund, as the combined effort raised more than $400 toward the Davis charities. Shortly after the game as the players had already left, the hospital announced to the media that Davis had passed away due to the extent of her injuries.
Comments from the coach
“We just wanted to come out and represent ourselves and our school and community with a lot of passion for the game of basketball…,” said Knafelc, who had taught at Arapahoe for many years before retiring. “They’re [the players] very resilient kids, kids anywhere, but at Arapahoe there is such a community there within the student body and outside in the greater community around there,” said Knafelc.

Denver Center Alliance Holiday Membership Party a fun get together
Denver Center Alliance members had a whopping good time at the Holiday Membership Party, Dec. 12, at the Ritz Carlton. This ever-so-friendly group enjoyed a buffet lunch while catching up on the Center’s Saturday Night Alive plans. The March 1, 2014, edition will be chaired by Leo and Susan Kiely and past Alliance President Susan Stiff is auction chair. That’s no small task as this is a big auction, winding through the theater lobby, to the very back you may not only have ever known was really there. This past spring’s edition raised $640,000 to support theater
education that brings children to the DCPA to see live theater, not something most of them get to see on their family’s own dollar. SNA also helps the Denver Center create new work and embrace the classics, which we all flock to see. The 2014 SNA features Matthew Morrison, who defines himself as “a song and dance man.” Google him and see what he’s known for. Mariel storeowner Denise Snyder brought over several racks of inventory and lunch guests were seen hauling out lots of frocks, bling and bags when they headed for valet. Among those there: theater devotee Steve Edmonds and the DCPA’s Associate Directors David Zupancic and Linda Mitchell. Judi Newman, one half of the Newman Center namesake at University of Denver, Susan O’Kelley, Pam Piro, Lisa Daniel Johnson, Jeanie Curley, Patti Ellerby, Linda Christie-Horn, Loretta Robinson, Jackie Rotole, Pam Sletton, Jean Smooke, Denise Tova, Patricia Villegas, Pam Wiegand, Deb Woodard and Gayle Ray were also there, among lots of others.

Cherry Hills tree lighting brings the spirit of the season By Jan Wondra It was homespun and handmade. That’s just the way the Village likes it. The hometown kickoff to the holiday season at City Hall, Dec. 13, featured the lighting of the Village tree, a reading of ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas by Mayor Doug Tisdale, the arrival of Santa Claus and horse-drawn wagon rides. The holiday setting, complete with Santa’s workshop, a gingerbread house and a gingerbread man, was all constructed by the staff of the Public Works Department during downtime throughout the year. Staff and volunteers manned the refreshment tables, dishing out hot chili, hot cocoa and cookies. Residents milled about, talking with neighbors, and visited in the lines for the horsedrawn wagon rides and to meet Santa. Temps were in the 40s, downright balmy, compared to the below-zero weather of the previous weekend. “We have the spirit and the will to create a great city,” said Tisdale. “But we never forget that some of the best efforts are hands-on. Our hats are off to our Public Works Department and the city staff for this wonderful evening.”

Aspen Academy holds annual Spirit of Service Week
The Aspen Academy community strongly believes that who we are as individuals is always more important than what we know. It strives to facilitate opportunities for students and families to make a positive and lasting impact on the world. Every year during the last week of school before winter break, Aspen Academy holds its annual Spirit of Service Week. During the week of Dec. 16-20, teachers, students and families focus on reaching out to the local community and serving others in areas where it is most needed. Part of Spirit of Service Week includes students giving donations to a variety of local organizations. This year students donated pajamas to Families First, sports equipment to the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Denver, art supplies and food to Champa House, and household items to ARC Thrift Stores. The organizations were chosen by the student government, and donations were dropped off by volunteer parents and student government members. Many other moments of service took place throughout the week. Aspen Academy students and their parents volunteered at The Boys and Girls Club’s Annual Holiday Party. They organized and ran a craft table for the Boys and Girls
Club members to enjoy, as well as spent time interacting through ping-pong and other games. Junior Kindergarten students put gift boxes together for troops serving overseas and included handmade holiday cards. Kindergarten students and their fifth grade mentor students put together corn bread, berry crisp, and bean soup jars for the women and children who live at Denver Rescue Mission’s Champa House. Second grade students spent time making scarves they donated to CASA, an organization that advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected children in Denver Juvenile Court. On Dec. 20th, students wore black and gold in support of their neighbor, Arapahoe High School. Sixth grade students commit themselves to a year-long service learning project that involves a partnership with ARC Thrift Stores. During Spirit of Service Week, sixth graders spent time at ARC Thrift Stores. Students were trained by the employees of ARC with developmental disabilities and spent the morning working alongside them. The sixth graders also helped plan and promote the donation drive for household items, and helped load a truck with more than 200 bags of items.

Marin District and Landmark may face bumpy road By Tom Barry During the last two months, it appeared that The Landmark luxury residential towers had finally turned a tumultuous corner, but things change and the light at the end of the tunnel may either be sunshine or an oncoming train. All appeared to be going well at the swank Landmark and Meridian condominium towers in Greenwood Village near I-25 and Belleview Avenue. Neuberger Berman and SVP Global had purchased the note for the property from the German government, which had acquired it through the bankruptcy of Hypo Bank. The East West Partners were placing the property’s trustee, Andy Miller. What’s more, the Kentwood Cherry Creek real estate firm had brought new life and a positive attitude into the sales of the remaining luxury units. But due to some recent developments, The Landmark towers could potentially be headed for another bumpy road over the next year. A sign was posted recently on the door of the towers’ opulent leasing center: “We’re sorry we’re out. The Sales Center is in transition. There are exciting things to come!” The sign included contact information. The Villager had not received a reply from East West Management at press time Developer Zack Davidson constructed the upscale Landmark residential and commercial center and ventured to fund a never-built adjacent European Village. He also created the Marin Special Metropolitan District to fund infrastructure improvements. One year ago, a grand jury indicted Davidson on fraud and other
charges for bilking the Marin District of $3.1 million. The bankrupt Davidson committed suicide shortly thereafter.

Lawsuits up in the air
A number of lawsuits involving Marin remain unsettled. Its homeowners association has filed suit against the district contending that its residents were not responsible for repaying Marin’s debts. A district judge concurred, leaving things up in the air for the primary lenders, Colorado BondShares and UMB Bank. In a separate matter, Marin has filed suit against some the district’s original board members and professional consultants in an attempt to recover some of the misappropriated funds. Re/Max agent Rike Palese has settled out of court, claiming no wrongdoing, but paying $100,000. The district’s previous lawyer Paul Cockerel and accountant LeAnn Jones have yet to settle, as the district hopes its professional-liability insurance will replenish the misappropriated funds.

Contentious meeting
On Dec. 12, the Marin board, the district’s legal adviser and accountant held a meeting attended by more than 15 Landmark residents, some of whom asked hard questions of the board and its advisers. Some residents were dissatisfied and dismayed with the responses. The issues addressed included the judge’s disapproval of the district’s repayment plan to homeowners. The proposed budget and mill levy were also discussed in a sometimes-contentious manner.

pal of the debt. It appears likely that Colorado BondShares and UMB Bank will appeal the court’s decision. The board had previously agreed that if denied the stay, Marin would impose a 1.5 mill levy on each residence to fund operating expenses based upon individual property-tax assessments. The deadline for the board to certify the mill level to Arapahoe County was Dec. 16 and the board complied. As a result, this year’s property tax bill for residents will be significantly reduced. Money from the district’s debt reserve will temporarily fund the full payment for 2014. The district has limited income due to legal decisions and will be unable to meet the interest-payment obligation for 2015, unless Marin receives legal relief or direction from the court.

Warriors never gave up in game for Claire Davis
T
By Tom Barry he students at Arapahoe High School had experienced one of the most challenging and emotional times of their young lifetimes this last week. Counselors had strongly encouraged the staff and students to have some type of normalcy to help them process all of what was happening in their lives. Everyone in the Warriors community was concerned about their classmate. After the tragedy, students were given an additional week of vacation and exams were postponed until after the winter break. After the tragedy, nearly all of the previously scheduled activities and sporting events were cancelled or postponed. There were several exceptions, as the girls swim team participated in a meet, the boys wrestling team had a match, and the girls and boys basketball games were played. The Lifetime Fitness Center near the high school opened their facilities to both the girls and boys basketball teams allowing them to utilize their gym last week. The boys basketball team headed to Rock Canyon High in Highlands Ranch for the school’s annual winter classic tournament. Students had painted a large rock in front of the school in Arapahoe’s black and gold colors with, “Stay Strong AHS – Pray for Claire.” The Rock Canyon community provided dozens of hot pizzas, hundreds of Christmas cookies and drinks to Warriors students and families on Dec. 20 in the school’s cafeteria.
Prayers for Claire – Hoops for Hope
Tournaments are sponsored to raise money for the respective team’s program. On Dec. 19, Rock Canyon raised $500 in donations at the first game for the Davis family charities. On Dec. 20, in lieu of admission, the school raised more than $3,500 at the door for the Claire Davis/Arapahoe High Fund, according to Rock Canyon’s Principal Andy Abner, as his wife teaches at the nearby Arapahoe High. In the locker room prior to the game, the Warriors players chanted out “Claire,” several times. Coach Dan Snyder and his team came onto the court to the cheers and applause of everyone in attendance. The undefeated Warriors team (3 –
0) sputtered throughout a good portion of the game chasing the talented Jaguars’ lead. More than 1,200 people attended the noteworthy competition. At one point, the Jaguars had what appeared to be an insurmountable lead of 10 points, but the Warriors team, students, families and alumni never gave up. The most important element to the game was not only on the court but the Warriors students in the bleachers. This was the first time the teenagers had any type of normal activity in a week, as they vocally got into the game. When halftime rolled around, the Rock Canyon students invited the Arapahoe students to join them in the “Canyon Crazies” section. The students welcomed their competitors unfurling a massive banner, which read “Rock Canyon Jags Loves (read heart symbol) Warriors,” signed by students and staff. In the second half, the Warriors gave it their all as teammates and fans rose to the occasion keeping the game close. In the beginning of the fourth quarter, Warrior teammates once again chanted “Claire,” several times, as their game was being played in her honor. With just over 13 seconds remaining in the game, Warriors No. 13, Brendan Till, a senior, was fouled and went to the line to shoot two free throws, as the team was behind by one point. Warriors fans stood nervously in the stands as Till sank both shots through the net to the cheers of Arapahoe fans. Arapahoe defended their one-point lead and in a comefrom-behind victory took the game winning 54–53. Warriors students rushed the court cheering and surrounded their team, savoring the victory and for a brief moment in time enjoying a typical event.
munity but this community in general, the community in Denver and in Colorado. “The Rock Canyon folks have been tremendous. Their players could not have been more gracious.” “Claire is in our thoughts and our kids are thinking about her all the time,” said Snyder. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her.”

Coach Snyder reflects
“This game was so close it could have gone either way, I thought Rock Canyon did very well,” said Snyder whose team was down by eight at halftime. “This is our chance to represent Arapahoe in a very positive manner…Winning and losing is a secondary thing but we needed a winning effort.” When asked about the Jags raising the funds in honor of Claire’s charities, Snyder said, “I think it speaks not just to the Arapahoe com-
