Many poker players and gamblers such as Doc Holliday, Poker Alice and Bat Masterson frequented the towns covered in the book usually playing poker, faro, or other games of chance in the famous and rowdy Red Light Districts nearly every early mining camp supported. Doc Holiday is said to have had his last gun fight in the rip-roaring town of Leadville at Hyman’s Saloon during the early months of 1885. According to legend, Holliday was down to last dollar and fearful a man he owed money to was gunning for him so he shot first and hit the man in the arm. After claiming self-defense and a bit of time in jail, the jury acquitted him. He then made his way to Glenwood Springs and died on Nov. 8, 1887 at the opulent Hotel Glenwood due to complications with his tuberculosis. At the end, a nurse said his last words were, “It’s funny” as he looked at his boots because

he thought he would be shot and killed with his boots on. During the 1880s the famous poker playing woman known as Poker Alice had her start in Leadville after her husband died and she needed to find a way to make ends meet. She found that she could beat her male counterparts in poker through distracting them with her good looks and beating them with her strong play. Soon, saloon owners were paying her to play at their tables. Bat Masterson was a famous gun fighting gambler, buffalo hunter, and noted town marshal with time spent at the Royal Gorge, Trinidad and Denver. During those early years, the railroads were the key to the opening of Colorado’s high country with their narrow rails reaching into the steepest canyons, to the summit of high peaks, and connecting the many towns that were springing up. Today, most of those railroad tracks have been pulled up and are just overgrown forgotten cuts in the land or have been convert-

ed into hiking and biking trails. In either case, it is fascinating to find and walk those old grades and at times, when deep in a canyon with the rushing waters of ice cold creek rushing by - it’s easy to imagine the monstrous large steel engine huffing and blowing steam while passing by and the cars clicking and clacking along behind. The gambling towns of Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek are included in the book of course - with other nearby locations such as the well preserved Victor, the busy Idaho Springs, the hidden jewel Beaver Brook Station, the forgotten Perigo, and popular Nevadaville among many others. So, as you are heading to play poker up in the hills or just traveling across the state, stop and take a look at some of these spots. They really give you a feel for what Colorado was yesterday; what Colorado is today; and what Colorado can become tomorrow. Ok - back to the tables and remember to play your game!

lines with guffaws,” and gave the famous star a warm welcome. Even before the show began its initial run of 25 performances tickets had almost sold out, but Central City Opera director Frank Ricketson informed newspapers that there were still good seats available. In fact, the show proved so popular that another week of performances added to the schedule shortly before the show completed its original three-week run. Opera officials referred to the demand for tickets to the popular show as “unprecedented.” It was the first time in Central City Opera’s history that a show had been held over for an additional week. Only one mishap marred the performance of Diamond Lil when four Central City teenagers stole some of Mae West’s jewelry during a performance. West reported the robbery to Sheriff Ken McKenzie, and also broke the bad news that the thieves were going to be disappointed. As she later told the Weekly Register-Call, the four necklaces, six large bracelets, and six pins and clips, were all rhinestones. The value of them was about $50, though she had spent another $950 to create the pieces they were in. West’s personal maid and another person from the play went to Furness Jewelers in Denver and convinced the manager to loan the star jewels for the rest of the show’s run. McKenzie reported that the teenage thieves managed to escape without a trace. Between performances of Diamond Lil, West took part in many publicity stunts to keep the people of Colorado entertained, attending parties and receptions in Denver throughout the plays run. In early August, she was made an honorary member of the Lakota tribe, with Charles Eberhart and William Willoughby presenting her with a headdress. A week later, she attended a high society party held in the Baby Doe Suite at the Windsor Hotel in Denver. When the Opera added the additional week of performances, West went to Denver and promised to sign photos for the first 25 people who bought tickets at the Daniels and Fisher store. More than 800 people showed up to buy the remaining 250 tickets to the show, which sold out in less than half an hour. West celebrated her birthday while in Central City, cutting a cake at the Teller House, playing the piano and signing in the Gold Nugget Bar (which also was in the Teller House). Jack Foster of the Rocky Mountain News also persuaded West to have her chest x-rayed at the Metropolitan Building in Denver as part of a campaign to fight tuberculosis. West reluctantly agreed, and the x-ray showed that the famed star wore a corset. Life magazine ran the photo and story, using it to poke fun at the 57-yearold actress, much to Foster’s dismay, who leapt to her defense in a column in the News in September, the day after the mag-

It had been quite a run, and decades after she left Central City, many people still fondly remembered their encounters with the famous star during her six weeks in the old mining town.

Going Green

Enjoy a jolly green Christmas this year As the holiday gift-giving season approaches, we often are filled with a sense of dread. How will we ever find the perfect gift for everyone on our list, the time to finish shopping and the money to pay for all the stuff we need to buy? The frenzied pressure starts before Black Friday when we are bombarded with “Buy…Buy…Buy”, and it continues through the holiday season. It seems we have become trapped into frantically buying superfluous things. It’s materialism at its worst because it creates wants in our heart for acquiring more “stuff, which in turn, creates more wasted energy and pollution for Mother Earth. Does serious spending, really contribute to the genuine spirit of loving others as we

celebrate Christmas? Wouldn’t it be more fun and rewarding this year to have a jolly green Christmas by capturing the real spirit of the season with genuine gestures of love and friendship in other ways? The word “Christmas” is Old English for Crīstesmæsse, which means “Christ’s Mass”, the celebration of the birthday of Christ. We can start by muting the TV commercials that try to entice us to buy their products, and also refusing to look through extravagant Christmas wish gift books designed to tempt us to overspend. We can refuse to take out holiday loans from banks and financial institutions. We can realize that malls are beautifully decorated and play lively holiday music to

get us in a mood to buy more. Of most importance, we can start to give generously of our time and talents instead of shopping till we drop. Think how you can create good will and fun for your family and friends over the next year that may involve your time or talents but not require a lot of money to implement. H e r e are some suggestions to consider for a jolly green Christmas. We should put giving to the poor at the top of our “to do” list during this holidays. We

can take food and gently used clothing to a local charity. Or we can donate to an international organization like Heifer. org. Every year our family gives a gift of a farm animal through Heifer. This is no ordinary gift. Giving an animal to those in need is like giving someone a small business by providing wool, m i l k , eggs, etc. Animal donations can p rovide poor families increasing access to medicine, school, food, and a sustainable livelihood. For family and friends, think of jolly green activities to do

with each person or family. Then write fun promises on decorative notes. For example, you might take friends out for dinner at your expense. In past years, instead of buying expensive toys for our young children, we took them to a dinner theater after Christmas. It was an enjoyable dining experience, plus it created an appreciation for live performances for them. Other suggestions might be having a family fun night every month and let the children plan the activities or starting a fund for an extra nice family vacation. To add to the joy to the holiday season, you might consider babysitting for a young couple, taking an elder out for a ride, or cooking a meal for a shut in. If you are a boss or supervisor, why not take extra time to mentor an employee to help him or her become better on the job? May you have a jolly green Christmas!

Trail’s End

Remembering Pearl Harbor 75th Anniversary Plans are made and tickets are bought for the thousands of now retired military personnel who served and saw the horror of enemy invasion at Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. The 75th anniversary will take place at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 2007. It is an anniversary, an occasion, for these courageous men, now in their 80s, to spend time with comrades, a time to reflect and remember their experiences. The Pearl Harbor Survivors Association is a strong group nationwide. With branches in every state, there are four branches in Colorado. These men are full of emotion, devotion and patriotism. Chief of Aviation Electronic Technicians, Irvin Obermeyer attended the ceremony in 2001, and remembered December 7, 1941 as if it was yesterday. Obermeyer enlisted in the United States Navy on March 13, 1940. Clyde L. Holmes enlisted with the Navy in December of 1936. Jack L. Peterson enlisted with the Navy in July of 1939. John J. Garcia enlisted with the Army in November 1940. All are Coloradans, placed with

their military service, at Pearl Harbor, on that fateful day. Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, started as a quiet, peaceful Hawaiian morning. Most of the servicemen awoke early, dressed and headed to the Mess Hall for breakfast shortly after 6:30 a.m. While eating a leisurely breakfast, the men heard a continuous loud roar, which rumbled the ground yet seemed to come from above. Running outside with the others, to see what the commotion was, Obermeyer was stunned at what he saw. It seemed like a 100 planes were flying overhead. The men knew instinctively this wasn’t an ordinary military fly over. They and their military command base were under enemy attack. The surprise attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor lasted almost two hours. Obermeyer remembered: “It was mass chaos. People were frantic, running everywhere.” Meanwhile, Jack Peterson, aboard his ship, the U.S.S. MacDonough, scurried to the boiler rooms, where there had been extensive damage. He and others worked to repair the damage in an effort to get the U.S.S.

MacDonough out of the port. Aboard the U.S.S. Pennsylvania, Clyde Holmes was ordered to man the battle station, fighting the enemy from above, and the fires from below. The U.S.S. Pennsylvania, would eventually be lost to enemy attack. Miraculously, Holmes survived. Over at Schofield Barracks, Sargent John Garcia prepared for orders to attack, and kept busy with reinforcements at the airfield.

These men, Obermeyer, Peterson, Holmes and Garcia, are only a few of Colorado’s heroes of Pearl Harbor and World War II. All went on to serve their country, proudly. All emerged from World War II has military heroes. Years later, retired from the Navy, Obermeyer remembered that dreadful day, as all those present at Pearl Harbor remembered. Obermeyer served as chairman for the Denver branch of the nationwide Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. Jack Peterson remained with the Navy serving on battleships, providing protection for aircraft carriers in the Pacific, including Midway, Wake Island, Guam and the Philippines. Retiring from the Public Service Company in 1981, Peterson spent much of his time with the PHSA group. Clyde Holmes continued to serve aboard ships, running amphibious operations in the Pacific from Aleutian to Okinawa. He retired from public service as a firefighter and deputy sheriff. John Garcia continued his service patrolling the Asiatic Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Following the war, Garcia served as a security guard for the Pueblo Guard force before retiring after 39 years of service.

Within a few weeks, a few of these heroic men, (all well in their 80s, and some no longer living,) reunited with other members of their beloved Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, commemorating that day they all lived through, 75 years ago. As members of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, all agree with the cause, summed up in their motto: Remember Pearl Harbor, Keep America Alert Let us pause to give thanks for the courage these men showed. Through their efforts and duty to our country, we are a free nation today. Let us smile and wish them well as they travel for this historical reunion, for they have earned it. And finally let us learn from their example and keep America alert. Let us give thanks for the service our American military is doing Afghanistan, and let us hope all Americans will take to heart the words Irv Obermeyer once said to me: “We did what we had to do.” You did indeed, Sir. And this American will remember. The question becomes, as these great heroes go to their reward, will we still remember Pearl Harbor? We must, for America’s future.

A Rocky Mountain Christmas By Linda Wommack

There is nothing as magical as a snow white Rocky Mountain Christmas. Several mountain towns, many within an hours’ drive from Denver, offer shopping, dining and seasonal entertainment. Golden - The charming community of Golden offers a month-long holiday celebration. The “Olde Golden Christmas” includes festive activities such as elf-themed 5k runs, parades and of course, shopping. Downtown Golden twinkle with holiday lights that illuminate the area. The charming stores are all decorated and many offer hot cider and cookies. Santa Clause is featured in the parades with bands, prancing horses, vintage cars and carriages. Thousands of holiday lights sparkle in the trees along the December 6 - 19, 2016

banks of Clear Creek. The Candlelight Walks with carolers and free hot cider is not to be missed. Georgetown - To experience the traditional Georgetown Christmas Market is to take step back in time. Then as now, the picturesque mountain mining town glistens with holiday lights and cheer. Take a stroll through town where the smell of hot roasted chestnuts fills the air. Or see the sites from a horse-drawn wagon. Here’s a little-known tidbit - the 1986 movie, The Christmas Gift, starring John Denver, was filmed in Georgetown. Frisco - The quaint mountain town of Frisco offers holiday shopping, dining and caroling along the festive lit streets. For the adventurous, there are scenic or dinner sleigh rides available. Vail - For those looking for a

holiday vacation destination, Vail is an excellent choice. The alpine ski resort not only offers some of the best skiing in the state, the community also boasts several venues for dining and night-life entertainment. Beaver Creek - The Winterfest at Beaver Creek is a spectacular seasonal event. Performances on the Village Plaza include ice skating, parades, children’s contests, photos with Santa, costumed carolers and much more, all free to the public. Glenwood Springs - The historic Hotel Colorado is decked out for the holidays. For the 26th year, the annual Christmas Craft and Gift show will be held in three rooms of the hotel. Unique gifts, handmade crafts and oneof-a-kind items are displayed and available for purchase. The town

also offers musical concerts including a symphony winter concert and the acclaimed Mountain Madrigal Singers Christmas Concert. The Winter Celebration Festival of Trees is a unique approach for charity. Trees of all sizes, make and creations such as paper, metal, wire, food or other creative materials are presented and sold at silent auction. The proceeds go to the support of the Silt Historical Park. Entertainment such as caroling, hayrides and bake sales

round out the event. Speaking of festive trees, there are several mountain areas that offer permits for cutting down your own tree for the Christmas holiday. Several within an hours’ drive from Denver include Pickle Gulch near Idaho Springs, Buffalo Creek near Bailey and Elk Creek, near Grandby. Permit information can be obtained from the US Forest Service at usda.gov or call 303-239-3838. PAGE 17

seeding program, which is why last summer we gave up our tent and built ourselves an ark. I’m joking! Actually, we bought a camper, which was easier. We also did a bit of canoeing over the summer. This presents a challenge for me because it means assisting my husband to lift our aluminum canoe off the top of our vehicle, and I’m not as strong as I look. Fortunately, after 28 years of marriage, we’re a team. Working together, we’ve developed a very efficient system that involves lifting the canoe, then flipping it while my husband calls out instructions and I complain about them. In November, we traveled to New Jersey to attend a wedding and then spent a few days sightseeing in New York City. As someone who grew up in a very small town, I’m fascinated by big city life. For example, in small towns, we say hello to everyone we meet on the

street. It’s not because we’re nice people, though some of us are, it’s just that it would be odd to pass the only other person on the block and not say something. They don’t do that in the city. I don’t think it’s because they’re unfriendly, though some of them may be. It’s just that it would be strange to say hello to every person you pass in a city block—not to mention time consuming. I noticed they honk a lot in the city and they park anywhere they

want to—even in the middle of the street if they can’t find anywhere else. We’d never do that in a small town. Of course, it’s easier for us to find a parking spot, and besides if small town people honk at someone or park illegally, everyone recognizes their vehicle. Anyway, it was a wonderful trip topping off a great 2016. I hope your year was as good, that you’re well and that your Christmas gift is in the mail to me. I’m joking! I won’t mind if you don’t send a gift. But I won’t mind if you do either.
