Saratoga honors employees with Team Member Appreciation event Andrew Westfall named 2015 Team Member of the Year
Despite the threat of lost revenues, Saratoga Casino Black Hawk closed early, Feb. 1, to allow its entire staff an evening of fun and team-building. The Team Member Appreciation event was held at the Lucky Strike Lanes in Belmar, which was privately reserved for the entire casino team. More than half of the nearly 300-member Saratoga Casino team battled the elements during the first large blizzard of the year to enjoy a delicious pizza buffet and salad bar, play games and mingle outside of work. The evening’s culmination was the awards ceremony celebrating all 12 Team Members of the Month and announcing the Team Member of the Year for 2015, Security Officer
Andrew Westfall. For his dedication and work ethic, Westfall received a check for $1,500. All nominees received gourmet gift baskets, and everyone in attendance was entered into a raffle for various fun prizes. “While we hold quarterly appreciation events, most team members only get to participate on their breaks, since they’re actively running the casino the whole time. I wanted to go bigger and do something out-of-the-ordinary this year, because this team truly deserves it. They set us apart from the other casinos, and we too had to be different in showing our appreciation for this extraordinary team’s efforts,” said Saratoga Casino’s General Manager Shawn Harris.
Nominees for Team Member of the Year: Back row, from left: John Makela, CSM; Fausto Urbina, Housekeeping; Ric Hoerter, IT; Chuck Carey, Marketing; Hugo Security Officer Andrew Ayala, F&B. Gemstones & Minerals
The colors of precious sea coral There are many varieties and colors of coral, but only a few of these are called precious coral. Corals are formed deep under sea by microscopic animals called coral polyps. These tiny, soft-bodied creatures form minute, hard shells. As a colony grows, it takes on complex branching, treelike forms which allow the maximum number of polyps to be fed by the nutrients in the water. Over time, colonies can form structures ranging from a hand-sized fan to a continent-wide reef. Precious coral was used in the oldest form of gemstone jewelry with pieces dating back 25,000 years showcased in museums. The use of coral, whose distinctive feature is that it can take a perfect polish, even predates the use of another ancient favorite, the pearl. Each coral gemstone color has its own distinct quality. Black coral is exotic and dramatic and has long been considered to guard against misfortune. Pink coral is delicate and is said to bring good health. Red coral

is best described as rich and romantic. Gold coral with its mysterious inner light, is the rarest of all corals. Another type, blue coral, which was found in Africa, is now almost unknown. The first new black coral bed found in centuries was discovered by Maui divers in deep waters off Lahaina, Maui in 1958. Today, Hawaiian Black Coral, the world’s finest deepsea precious coral and the Hawaii State Gemstone, is carefully collected by hand by divers at depths that exceed 200 feet. Black coral is rare and, when polished, shines with such a luster you can almost see your own reflection in it. Mature colonies may take 50 years to grow, so to ensure the future of Hawaiian Black Coral, Maui divers strictly adhere to both federal and state regulations that prohibit the harvesting of immature colonies. In this way, not only sustainability, but also growth of Hawaiian Black Coral is supported. Pink coral was first discovered off Makapu’u Point, Oahu, in 1,200
feet of water in 1966. Hawaii began making jewelry from it the same year. Now it is found over the entire length of the Hawaiian chain from Oahu in the east to beyond Midway Island in the west. Pink coral is a very dense and hard gemstone, its color runs the entire spectrum of pink, from almost white to hibiscus pink to salmon red. The marbled and shaded colorings in some larger pink corals are natural qualities of the gem. The value of Pink coral varies according to rarity, but all shades of this coral are highly prized. Red coral has a history predating the ancient glories of Rome. Red coral has been revered since early civilization for its color, luster and texture. Found in depths of about 500 to 1,000 feet, red coral grows only about 1/4 inch per year, making it a highly treasured gemstone. Red coral is harvested in water off the island chains of Ogasawara and Ryuku, as well as the Mediterranean. Hawaiian Gold Coral was discovered in small amounts in 1971 in the same general area as the pink coral discovery area off Makapu’u Point in 1,200 feet of water. In the
year 2,000, two new beds of Hawaiian Gold coral were discovered; one atop an ancient underwater volcano about 100 miles south of Oahu, the other off Keyhole Point on the big island of Hawaii. Both beds were at a depth of about 1,300 feet. The color of Hawaiian Gold Coral varied widely and displayed many interesting patterns, unlike pink and black corals. Its color ranged from a sandy beige to almost black. Hawaiian Gold coral has a special characteristic called “chatoyance,” from the French word “cat’s eye,” which describes a mysterious moving inner light. Maui Divers Company was the only company in the world authorized to make jewelry with Hawaiian Gold coral. But because of its rarity, harvesting of this particular variety of coral was discontinued decades ago. Thus, Maui Divers’ Hawaiian Gold Coral jewelry is no longer available. At the beginning of the first millennium, there was significant trade in coral between Mediterranean and India where it was highly prized as a substance believed to be endowed with mysterious sacred properties. Pliny the Elder remarks that, before the great demand from India, the Gauls used it for the ornamentation of their weapons and helmets; but by this period, so great was the Eastern demand, that it

was very rarely seen even in the regions where it was produced. Among the Romans, branches of coral were hung around children’s necks to protect them from danger. Coral was believed to have many medicinal virtues attributed to it. The belief in coral’s potency as a charm continued throughout the Middle Ages and even early in the 20th century Italy where it was worn as a protection from the “evil eye,” and by women as a cure for infertility. The fishing and working of coral is almost entirely an Italian industry. Fishing is done during the summer months, since the winter storms increase the hazards to both men and cargo. The boats, built specifically for this purpose, are all constructed along the same lines and, even though comparatively small, are solid and seaworthy. The divers have no trouble in shallow water, however, in areas of greater depth, a special apparatus is required. Coral is most commonly fashioned into beads, either round or egg-shaped and are used in making necklaces, rosaries and bracelets. Carved ornaments, including cameos, intaglios and figurines, are frequently seen including intricate pieces that represent the height of the Italian craftsman’s art.

tributed greatly to the cost of mining as the shafts got deeper.” It took 17 years before the Argo Tunnel reached Central City, over four and a half miles away. However, once completed, miners could drill and blast from below in the tunnel rather than working from above. The water filling the shafts and tunnels could spill down into the tunnel and eliminate the time and money spent bailing. Clear Creek Canyon is well mor ethan 1,000 feet lower than the deepest Gilpin County mine. According to an article by Kenneth Jessen in the Loveland Reporter-Herald, the tunnel was the most ambitious and costly venture ever undertaken in either Clear Creek or Gilpin counties. It intersected directly or by crosscut tunnels an estimated 100 mines. At the end of the tunnel near Central City, it was 1,300 feet below the surface. The Argo Tunnel allowed mines closed for years to reopen. They built the tunnel on a slight grade to allow water to flow in a flume out to the portal. For two-way passage of ore cars, the first two and a half miles of the tunnel was 12 feet wide with a double track. Beyond the end of the double track, the width of the tunnel decreased to ten feet allowing for a single track. They used electric locomotives for hauling. In 1913, the Argo Reduction & Ore Purchasing Company formed to construct a mill adjacent to the portal. When completed, it was the largest mill of its type in the world. They
incorporated the latest milling processes for the highest percentage recovery of precious metals. Rather than pay hoisting costs, many mine owners paid the tunnel company to haul ore out to Idaho Springs to the mill. During the company’s nearly 50 years of operation, the mill processed more than $100 million of gold ore at the old time prices of $18 to $35 an ounce. The Argo Tunnel remained in operation until 1943 when the tunnel closed following a tragic accident that took the lives of four men. The miners were drilling and blasting in the tunnel that passed near the Kansas vein. Pumping had stopped at the Kansas shaft and crosscut tunnels in anticipation that the mine would drain through the Argo Tunnel. Hydrostatic pressure caused the wall of the tunnel to burst, releasing the contents of the flooded mine, and drowning four men instantly. A fifth miner was bringing out an ore train when he heard a loud roar. Abandoning the train, he ran for his life and by the time he reached the portal he was swimming through the rushing stream. The water blasted from the tunnel like a fire hose for hours. Today, the Argo Tunnel continues to serve Gilpin and Clear Creek counties, draining and treating acidic mine water from the thousands of mines that form a labyrinth of tunnels beneath the many towns, subdivisions, state parks and opens spaces. This water, once treated is then safely returned to Clear Creek.

ming to Evanston. At that point Eliza must have felt home beckoning. George Chapman obviously adored his bride, whom he had married in 1882. He had built a beautiful house for her that still exists in Evanston today. In one year they had added a son, George Hobart Chapman (1887), to their family. He was followed in 1888 by my grandmother Elizabeth Louise, fondly referred to as “Elizabeth Louise, tickle and squeeze.” One more son in 1891, Elwin, completed the family. They lived in the town of Evanston where George opened a meat market and where he worked as a foreman at the Union Pacific’s machine shop. George also had been busy building a sheep ranch, Neponset Land and Livestock, that went from Wyoming well into Utah. The children loved going out to the ranch, but it was not really set up for the family to live there until sometime after 1900. Eliza apparently had an influence on the ranch. Her Evanston home as it is today still has yellow tiles around the fireplace. The ranch’s signature color was yellow. Everything was yellow right down to the wooden handles on the eating utensils. Could it be that this was her favorite color? In 1888, when she was pregnant with Elizabeth, George made Eliza a co-owner of the Chapman Canal Company. The canal was the lifeblood of the ranch, so this showed his trust in her. It is the Chapman Canal that still keeps the ranch viable today. Sometime after Elwin’s birth, Eliza’s health began to fail. My grandmother Beth (Elizabeth) decided to cheer her mother up. She got a piglet from the ranch, washed it, powdered it, and tied a blue ribbon around its neck. When she brought it to her mother’s boudoir, she was greeted with a scream. Beth was sad to have her good intentions go awry and even sadder when she returned the piglet to its mother only to have the mother kill the alien-smelling little creature. To the family’s pleasure there

George Fredric Chapman were signs that Eliza’s health was improving. It was a surprise to all when, during the noonday meal on Feb. 20, 1897, Eliza, who was resting upstairs, passed peacefully of heart failure. She was 38 years old and had been a loving wife and helpmate to her husband George. Beth wrote in a memoir when she was 87 years old that her dear mother died when she was about 9 years old. Her fondest memories were of her mother bringing the four children east to Beth’s grandmother’s home in Martha’s Vineyard during several summers. Beth loved traveling there on the Union Pacific. Perhaps it was in her blood. When Eliza died the sister of an aunt came to live with the children, but they were not very fond of her. ”After two years my father told me that he was going to be married again. I was quite crushed as I felt stepmothers were difficult. She, however, proved far from it...”

ithin a few short years of the gold strike on the south side of Pikes Peak, a young boy arrived with his parents in what was known worldwide as the “Richest Gold Camp On Earth.” He would eventually make his name known worldwide as well. He was Lowell Thomas, the renown radio commentator. The Cripple Creek Mining District, which included the future mining camps of Cripple Creek and Victor, was formed in 1891, following the rich gold find by Bob Womack. Thousands of miners and prospectors flooded into the area. Millionaires were made by the ore lode from the District’s gold. The richest gold strikes occurred on or near Battle Mountain, which shadows the town of Victor. Winfield Scott Stratton became the first millionaire from the gold deposits in the district. In July 1891, following Womack’s advice, Stratton filed a claim located on the side of Battle Mountain. His Independence Mine struck gold almost overnight. Others had similar results. The Woods brothers, Frank and Harry, broke ground for the construction of a new hotel at the corner of 5th and Diamond streets in 1893. Frank hit a 20-inch vein of gold. Construction of the hotel ceased immediately. The Woods brothers traced the vein of gold to the Gold Coin claim, which they quickly bought for a few thousand dollars. A shaft was sunk in the middle of the strike and the Gold Coin Mine was erected in the main thoroughfare of Victor. Within a year, the Woods bothers’ Gold Coin Mine was producing $50,000 a month, and by 1899, an average of $210,000 was the dividend returned to their stockholders. With all the wealth pouring forth from the surrounding mines, Victor soon became known as the “City of Mines.” Into this Victorian mining hamlet, at an elevation of nearly 10,000 feet, arrived Victor’s most famous one-time resident, Lowell Thomas. In 1900, when Thomas moved with his parents, Harry and Harriet Wagner Thomas, from Woodington, Ohio, to Victor, it wasn’t for the gold. Thomas’ father was a doctor, and his mother a teacher. Young Thomas walked daily uphill to the Victor High School. Along the way, he passed the red-light

He began by delivering the newspapers for the Victor Record. Following his high school graduation in 1909, Thomas enrolled at Valparaiso University, where he earned not one but two bachelor’s degrees. In 1911 Thomas returned to Victor where he edited the Victor Record newspaper for the next two years. Shortly thereafter, Thomas left Victor for a position with the Chicago Journal. During his time in Chicago, Thomas also became a faculty member at Chicago-Kent College of Law and taught oratory and public speaking. In 1914, Thomas left Chicago for New Jersey. There, he enrolled at Princeton University, where he studied for a master’s degree, received in 1916. Shortly after receiving his MA, America entered World War I.

Thomas was asked by President Woodrow Wilson, himself a former president of Princeton, to join an official government sponsored party to cover the war effort and “compile a history of the conflict.” Thomas jumped at the opportunity. However, Thomas had his own vision for covering the war. Rather than merely writing about the war, Thomas set about filming certain aspects of the conflict. In 1918, as an accredited U. S. war correspondent, Thomas was granted permission by the British Foreign Office, to meet and interview T. E. Lawrence, a captain in the British Army. After the initial meeting in Jerusalem, Thomas was invited to join Lawrence in the desert region of the World War I fight. After several weeks in the desert of the Middle East with Lawrence, where he filmed the enigmatic figure in Arab uniform, Thomas returned to the United States in 1919. With financial backing, Thomas launched a nationwide campaign of his film, supported by moving
pictures of veiled women, Arabs in their picturesque robes, camels and dashing Bedouin cavalry. When Thomas’s film “Lawrence of Arabia” was shown at New York’s Madison Square Gardens, it wasn’t long before the film took the nation by storm. Although Lawrence is known to have seen the film many times, he later claimed to dislike it. Nevertheless, in 1920, when Thomas requested an additional photo shoot of Lawrence, the British Army captain agreed. The two met in London where Lawrence, though he claimed to be shy of publicity, sat for a series of posed portraits in his British Army uniform, as well as Arab clothing. As the years went by, the friendship between the two waned. Thomas always held Lawrence in high esteem, remarking, “He had a genius for backing into the limelight.” For the next few years, Thomas showed the film at various venues across the country, as well as giving a series of lectures. In 1930, Thomas was hired as a

broadcaster with CBS Radio, where he delivered a nightly news and commentary program. Two years later, Thomas joined the NBC Radio network where he remained until 1937. By that time, Thomas had developed an independent company to produce his broadcasts which he sold to CBS Radio. There, Thomas made media broadcast history when he hosted the first television news broadcast in 1939, which was also simulcast on his radio broadcast. The following year Thomas returned to NBC, where on Feb. 21, 1940, he began the first regularly scheduled television news broadcast on that network. In the summer of 1940, Thomas anchored the first live telecast of a political convention; the 1940 Republican National Convention, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, also simulcast on his radio program. Despite his historic television achievements, Thomas preferred radio broadcasting over television. With his radio presence, Thomas was able to reach a larger audience, presenting and commenting on the news of the day. For the next four decades Thomas enjoyed his work on radio. His signature radio signon was, “Good evening, everybody” and his sign-off, “So long, until tomorrow,” became a part of American culture. When he retired in 1976, Lowell Thomas, the kid from Victor, Colorado, had achieved the longest radio career of anyone in the industry.
