The Last Hand Real blackjack arrives in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
It seems that while many Mexiand the Mexican custom service area cans are coming to the United States was packed with hundreds of tourists legally or illegally, many U.S. citizens restless to hit the hotels, beaches and are going to Mexico with passports, of cafes. It took about an hour and a half course. This cases. It sounds rather silly, but if we can enforce the year, they have installed two real blackjack tables borders, maybe we really should open them up with dealers and one roulette table. The PlayWin Casino slot machines were busy and let the traffic flow both ways. Mexico has all on a late Saturday afternoon and the dining room of the natural resources that exist here in the U.S., except they don’t have the best form of governance, was full of special promotion customers. They were serving free margaritas at the ena Constitution or Bill of Rights that have served us trance to the main street location in downtown so well. One other highlight, we must praise our public Cabo. The live blackjack games opened at 5 p.m. with education system that has created the best country in the world. While our teachers and public schools a dealer and six-deck shoe around the standard receive plenty of criticism, we have by far the best- gaming table. All of the chips were in pesos with educated population in the Western hemisphere. a limit of five pesos to 1,000. There had to be two So teachers, take a bow. We also have mandatory players at the table for the dealer to play. As the sole customer, I had to put two, four peso chips on two education for all of our children. I recently spent a week in Cabo San Lucas and spots in order to play. I’m trying to figure out why it took two to tango, it was very enjoyable and the weather was perfect. Eight planes landed at once on our Saturday arrival but the only explanation might be to discourage
card counting, or make it more difficult. But with six decks and a real speedy dealer that would be very hard to accomplish, if indeed it really does make a difference. Maybe, they just think it is a waste of time to deal to one player that might be the simple answer? Soon other players came and joined in the game. The rules are the same worldwide except there was one exception. The dealer offered insurance on an ace showing, but didn’t show his blackjack until the end of the hand taking all bets. He did offer even money on opposing aces. All of the players who joined in the game were locals and they didn’t know how to play very well. They were hitting 13, 14, 15, 16 sometimes with a dealer bust had showing. Since blackjack is so new to the Mexican public, they were missing splits and double downs that favor the players. They all lost small amounts of peso chips. On the other hand this old player just kept betting a few pesos on the two spots and the cards were favorable. Using the Colorado casino experience, I was able to scratch out a small profit before my wife came and said it was time to go to dinner. I cashed out and received a 13 peso-to-one U.S. dollar, a very good exchange rate. It paid for dinner and the cab fare with the peso currency and I enjoyed the peso play. One last note…the brand new cards coming out of the shoe were very good and better than in an old shuffled deck when the dealer just seems to win all the time. I liked the fresh cards, and the new gaming and this it is good for Mexico. At the little outdoor Cabo Cantina Alonso, the www.coloradogambler.com waiter, taught me some Spanish, the words were “buena suerte,” meaning “good luck.”

Front Seat: A Good Ride
2015 Outback maintains grip in Rockies One of the vehicles most closely associated with our state and its rugged terrain is the Subaru Outback. The Outback wagon has been the staple of Subaru’s unqualified success in Colorado over the past By Bud Wells 20 years. Subaru’s outstanding symmetrical allwheel-drive system with active torque vectoring kept me going through recent deep snow and icy surfaces with the 2015 Outback 3.6R Limited model. The Subaru’s 8.7-inch ground clearance is much appreciated. The 3.6R’s outdated 5-speed automatic transmission of the past has been replaced by an improved continuously variable transmission to go with the wagon’s boxer 6-cylinder engine. As for wagons, when it comes to handling, I prefer the Audi allroad; for fuel mileage, none

of the other wagons can match the mpg of the Volkswagen Jetta Sportswagen TDI diesel, and, perhaps the nicest of leather and comfortable interiors is that of the Volvo V60. Still, for all-around, everyday service, dependability and durability, the Outback can compete with any of them. It’s been a winner of long standing. I remember the first Outback, introduced in 1995 as a variant of the Legacy wagon. Wagons were going nowhere at that time. The Outback, though, with its boxer engines and sturdy all-wheel-drive structure and heavy side cladding, endured among a rush of SUVs and more modern crossovers, and found favor with lots of outdoors persons. The first one I drove back in ’95, with a sticker price of $24,500, weighed 3,250 pounds on a wheelbase of 103.5 inches. Its 150-horsepower, 2.5-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine produced surprising low-end torque. The Outback has grown in 20 years – its wheelbase by 5 inches and curb weight by 550 pounds. The ’15 model has some exterior redesign,

including a more rakish windshield in which the base has been moved forward 2 inches, and it is a bit longer, taller and wider than last year’s version. Noticeable atop the wagon is a sturdy luggage rack. I’ve not been a fan of CVT transmissions in 3,800-pound vehicles; however, this one in the 3.6R is a much stronger higher-torque unit than those I’ve tested in the past for Subaru. Under certain acceleration levels, the driver even feels simulated “gear steps” like a conventional 6-speed automatic, and it is quickened with manual-mode and paddle-shift control switches. All this while attaining the better fuel economy of a CVT on regular-grade gasoline. The review model averaged 23.9 miles per gallon; its EPA estimate is 20/27. The flat-6 boxer engine develops 256 horsepower and 247 lb.-ft. of torque, with adequate performance. Standard engine in the Outback wagon is a 175-hp, 2.5-liter boxer-4-cylinder with CVT, which is EPA rated at 25/33 mpg. Acceleration is increased with the bigger 3.6R powerplant, complemented with responsive steering and the torque vectoring, which applies brake pressure to a front wheel for improved cornering ability. The Outback Limited rides on Bridgestone Dueler 225/60R18 tires. Highlighting the interior, in addition to perforated-leather heated seats, is a 7-inch touch-screen display with voice-activated controls, navigation, Harman/Kardon audio system with 12 speakers, backup camera, SiriusXM, text messaging, Bluetooth and dual USB ports. The navigation, moonroof, keyless access and push-button start pushed sticker price to $36,040. The Outback 3.6R Limited is equipped with eight airbags, including new front seatcushion bags to keep occupants in place during frontal collisions. Blind-spot detection, lane-change assist and rear-cross-traffic alert are other safety enhancements. The rear seating area boasts lots of legroom

and headroom, with added comfort from rear heat/air vents. Seatbacks recline for passengers in the back row. Cargo-carrying capability behind the second row of seats, 35.5 cubic feet, is a favorite feature for many buyers of the Outback.

Colorado History
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Jim Beckwourth, Colorado’s legendary frontiersman By Linda Wommack
Mountain man, scout, frontiersman, honorary Indian chief, and the first to pen an autobiography. And what a story it was. He was legendary in his own time, although early historians largely discounted him. James Pierson Beckwourth was born in 1798 in Frederick County, Va., to an African American slave mother. His father, Sir Jennings Beckwourth, owner of a large plantation, raised young Jim as his own son, although, according to the law, Jim was legally considered a slave. His father appeared in open court on three separate occasions and “acknowledged the execution of a Deed of Emancipation from him to James, a mulatto boy.” A few years later, the Beckwourth family moved to Missouri, where young Jim was later apprenticed to a blacksmith in St. Louis. Beckwourth, unhappy as an apprentice, had a falling out with the blacksmith, and left the area for a better opportunity. At the age of 24, Beckwourth signed on as a scout for the Rocky Mountain Fur Company. Ashley’s Rocky Mountain Fur Company was the first to depend primarily upon trapping the beaver rather than buying them from Native Americans. William Ashley’s ad in the Missouri Gazette, not only drew in Beckwourth, it also brought in future legends in the industry, such as James Bridger, Tom Fitzpatrick, Jedediah Smith, and William Sublette. And business boomed, setting forth the way for Westward Migration. For several years, Beckwourth hunted, trapped, and scouted for the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, as well as the American Fur Company, where he became proficient

Nevertheless, Beckwourth spent the next eight years with the Crow, and even married into the tribe, taking Pine Leaf as his bride. Beckwourth even said that he rose within the tribal ranks to the level of a war chief. During the later part of the 1830s, the beaver were becoming scare Jim and fashion trends in Beckwourth the East and in Europe were changing. Beckwourth returned to St. Louis in an effort to seek employment. As luck would have it, something Beckwourth seemed to have plenty of, he ran into his trapper friends, Andrew Sublette and Louis Vasquez. Vasquez told Beckwourth of the Bent brothers and their monopoly on trade with the westward travelers and Indians along the Arkansas River in southern Colorado. Vasquez, an experienced Colorado trader in the frontiersman skills he would himself, told Beckwourth that his use for the rest of his life. Returning to his love of scouting, in 1850, he ventured west toward California. As he traveled through the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Beckwourth spotted a pass through the area, “far away to the southward that seemed lower than any other.” Beckwourth later wrote, “We proceeded in an easterly direction, and all busied themselves in searching for gold; but my errand was of a different character: I had come to discover what I suspected to be a pass.” Beckwourth felt that the pass “would afford the best wagon-road into the American Valley approaching from the east.” A year later, he had developed the trail, now known as Beckwourth Pass. A decade later, Beckwourth had
returned to the Colorado Territory, gaining employment at Bent’s Fort. Beckwourth happened to be at Fort Lyon on Nov. 28, 1864, when Col. John Chivington and his volunteer army suddenly arrived at the fort. Beckwourth was forced to serve as a guide for Chivington, taking him and his troops to Black Kettle’s camp on the banks of Sand Creek. Chivington’s surprise attack on the village the following day became a massacre of innocent men, women and children. Beckwourth witnessed the atrocity, including the murder of a prisoner, interpreter John Smith’s son, Jack. Beckwourth’s testimony during the government trials concerning the actions of Chivington, led to Beckwourth’s appointment by the U.S. government as an advisory toward peace negotiations with the Indians. Beckwourth told his life story to J.D Bonner who published The Life and Adventures of James P. Beckwourth, the first biography of a celebrated frontiersman.

Stagg of Echo who asked Deputy City Marshal Taylor of Evanston, Special Deputy Edward Dawes of Evanston and Deputy Sheriff Calverly of Uinta County to join him. Three were from across the border, so they did not really

Why didn’t they come up and ask us to surrender?” Calverly’s testimony: “(I) had fired the first shot just as Coughlin was drawing a bead (from the doorway) on Taylor who was about to drink from the stream.” “No shot had come from the doorway.” Calverly’s testimony: “The men in the cabin had fired six or eight shots before (Dawes) fired at all.” The News Register - Evanston, 1896: “Eleven shots had been fired at the cabin window by Dawes before he was struck by the ball that caused his death.” Coughlin: “They just commenced sending the volleys into the shanty. I told the kid (George) that we must fight for our lives. So we started in.” Coughlin: “I didn’t kill Stagg.” “I guess that he was killed by those other fellows over there.” George’s testimony: “Coughlin first killed Dawes and then crawled out of the window of the shanty and along a ditch until he got right behind Stagg, who was crawling in the grass toward the cabin … Stagg heard something behind him and turned. As he did so Coughlin fired and Stagg died immediately afterwards. “After Stagg and Dawes had been shot, Taylor and Calverly were out of ammunition, and both had minor wounds. At Coughlin’s arrest he said, “When we did come out of the cabin and the two deputies were running away, we might have put bullets through them. But we thought we had done enough of that kind of Map of the shootout that was probably used in court. The spring was 552 feet from the work. Taylor and Calvary retreated to Wasatch and reported what had happened by telegraph. The outlaws were held up awhile because their horses had wandered away. Meanwhile they claimed to have tried to care for the dying Dawes who had been lung-shot. They gave him water and changed his position a few times so that he could rest easier in his pain. Patrick Coughlin and Fredrick George then headed to the northwest. The story continues with the longest manhunt in Utah’s history up until that time.

The Gable House Durango’s Victorian Diamond
By Linda Wommack
James Schutt was a wealthy businessman by the time he built his grand home in 1892. When the town of Durango was established, Schutt established one of the first of the three mercantile stores, as well as a flour mill. The Victorian mansion, located at 805 5th Ave., was designed and built by George S. Barber. Built in the popular Queen Anne style of the era, the three-story home was a prominent structure in the new residential area. Constructed of deepred brick, kilned in Pueblo, the exterior of the home featured a wooden wrap-around porch with ornate banisters. Two decorative balconies enhanced the second floor. A fabulous turret crowned the corner of the third floor. There were four gables that joined the steeply pitched main roof, each of which featured fishscaled shingles with ornate fascia at the gable ends. The interior of the home featured a formal parlor and dining room on the first floor, with bedrooms on the second floor. Hardwood floors, made of oak, graced the mansion. James and Eliza Schutt, who never had children, enjoyed their home for the next few years, despite the economic disaster of the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in 1893. It is quite possible that Schutt felt an economic downturn was in the making, as he had signed over the deed to the mansion to his wife, Eliza, prior to the Silver Crash. Following the repeal, Durango, as most of Colorado, fell into an economic depression. As mines closed overnight, the effect rippled across the state. In Durango, 15 businesses failed by early summer. Schutt’s various businesses suffered through what came to be known as the “worst depression of the century,” and he and Eliza eventually liquidated many of their holdings, including their home. In 1898, the mansion was sold, ironically enough, to J. L. Rachofsky, Schutt’s mercantile competitor. The Famous lived up to its name. Selling everything from beans and flour, to hammers and nails, and clothing, shoes and boots. While it was not the only mercantile in town, it was the most “famous” for catering to the common working family. Tragedy occurred in 1913, when fire engulfed The Famous, destroying Rachofsky’s business. Financially

ruined, Rachofsky sold the mansion to its most illustrious owner. Dr. Benjamin J. Ochsner was renowned as one of the finest physicians in southwestern Colorado. He left his medical practice in Telluride, moving to Durango, where he practiced at Durango’s Mercy Hospital. After a disagreement with the hospital board over a variety of issues regarding medical practice, Ochsner purchased the mansion from Rachofsky for the sole purpose of running his own hospital. Ochsner oversaw an extensive conversion of the home. The first floor rooms were opened to create a larger area, which Ochsner used as a patient ward for needy patients. The former parlor was used as Ochsner’s private office. The second floor rooms were private patient rooms, with a few two-bed rooms. The third floor, which had never been completed by either of the previous owners, was transformed into the operating room. The glass in the windows was replaced with leaded prismatic glass tiles, which actually diffused the sunlight coming into room, eliminating any reflection on the operating table. The Ochsner Hospital, which opened in 1913, became Durango’s first private hospital. Ochsner and his hospital served the community quite admirably. Lives were saved by Dr. Ochsner’s renowned medical expertise and his surgical skills. Ochsner furthered his practice by installing the first X-ray machine in the county. Seven years after the hospital was opened, county health regulations required Ochsner to install linoleum flooring, as it was easier to clean for sanitation purposes. Complying with the new regulation, Ochsner installed the required flooring over the original oak flooring. When Ochsner retired in 1937, Drs. Leo Lloyd and Christopher Martin purchased the facility. They continued Ochsner’s hospital practice for the next five years. In 1942, the doctors sold the property to La Plata County officials who operated the hospital as the county’s first public hospital, later known as the Community Hospital, for the next 20 years. In 1962, the county officials deemed the hospital outdated and opened a new facility. The property was then sold to the JAME Corporation. An acronym for four wealthy
investors, one of the investors, Marvin Dale, eventually purchased the property outright in 1966. For the next five years, Dale operated the mansion as a rooming house to students attending Durango’s Fort Lewis College. In 1971, Jeffrey and Heather Bryson purchased the historic edifice from Dale. The Brysons began a lengthy and painstaking restoration process, the ultimate goal being to return the mansion to its original condition. It would take years. Broken windows throughout the house were replaced. Layers and layers of paint were painstakingly stripped from the walls. Through their research, the Brysons were then able to find period-correct paint matches for the walls. The linoleum was torn up from the floors. Sadly, the original oak floors underneath were in sad condition. With hard work, golden oak flooring was eventually refurbished to the original condition. The second and third floors of the mansion had suffered considerable damage from a roof that had apparently been leaking for years. “It was sheer neglect,” said Heather Bryson. The water damage affected several walls, floors and the ceilings. The entire roof was replaced. This proved to be quite a daunting task. From the corner turret to the steeply pitched points, attention was paid to historic accuracy. The four gables also received careful consideration in an effort to duplicate the fish-scaled shingles at the gable ends. It may have been serendipity, for the Brysons chose to name their bed and breakfast inn, “Gable House.” In 1994, the Brysons opened Gable House to the public as a bed and breakfast inn. Today, the Gable House Bed and Breakfast not only offers a true Victorian experience for their guests, but a warm and friendly atmosphere as well. Heather said, “The Gable House is an intimate B&B. You come in contact with me not a desk clerk. I truly care about my guests and want them only to go away glowing, rested, rejuvenated and telling their friends what a wonderful time they had.” This is an excerpt from the author’s latest book, Colorado’s Historic Mansions & Castles. It is available in bookstores, at www.amazon. com, www.barnes&noble.com or www.lindawommack.com.

I’m racking up steps every time I walk into a room, can’t remember why I’m there, leave, and have to come back when I do. I get credit for all the steps I take when I’m hunting all over the house for my car keys. I never used to appreciate that I have to carry my laundry down two flights of stairs. I still don’t. But I do get a lot of steps on laundry day.
My grocery store moved everything around a few months back and I still haven’t caught on. But that’s OK. Wandering all over the store looking for canned tomatoes and dishwashing liquid racks up steps. I even get credit for steps I take heading to the kitchen for a snack. And at work, I notice I get a lot more steps on days when there are treats in the break room. I’ve set my daily goal at 15,000 steps and when I hit it, which I do almost every day, my Fitbit vibrates on my wrist. That makes me jump, and that’s always good for a couple more steps. Going Green
Trading Post EMPLOYMENT
Be green—don’t waste food
America is the land of plenty where food is piled high on tables in homes and restaurants, but what’s leftover gets thrown in the trash. The National Resources Defense Council estimates the average American household throws away close to 20 pounds of food each month. According to NRDC, reducing waste by just 15 percent would be enough to feed 25 million people annually. Much of our food “waste” should not be wasted at all. That’s not being green. Perhaps we overestimate the amount of food we could prepare and eat when we went grocery shopping. Or we tossed outdated food that was stamped “sell by” a certain date. Most likely it was not spoiled, but just not as fresh tasting, as we would prefer. I applaud the Colorado farm-to-table efforts to give us fresh healthy food, but I wonder if we aren’t cancelling these green efforts by our plate-to-landfill tendencies for leftover food. It’s good that health laws prohibit restaurants from saving bread products left in the basket. That’s why I always take home any leftover bread because I know it has to be thrown out. I feel guilty if I waste food. Bread is one of our most wasted foods, especially in this dry Colorado air where it soon becomes dry and stale even though it is perfectly good to eat and can be fixed in so many different ways. Here are some tips on ways to avoid wasting bread. Compost pile. Never use moldy bread; but instead of trashing it, put it in a compost pile. Breadcrumbs. Grate or whirl it in a blender, then freeze or store your breadcrumbs in an airtight container. Perfect for toppings on macaroni and cheese and casseroles, putting in meatballs and coating fish and meat. Add herbs and salt if you want a savory mix. Bread pudding. There are many versions of this recipe, but essentially it’s buttered slices of bread, layered and baked with a mixture of eggs, sugar and milk for a dessert. For a tasty main course, add cheese, spinach or chopped meats and bake in an ovenproof dish.
Februrary 17 - March 2, 2015
Stuffing. Mix breadcrumbs with onions, herbs and seasoning for a simple stuffing. Add beaten egg to hold it together. Experiment with extra ingredients such as squash, spinach, sausage, nuts and dried fruits such as cranberries. French toast. Dip thick bread slices into a mixture of milk and beaten eggs mixed with vanilla, cinnamon and sugar if desired. Feed the birds. Stale bread can be a lifesaver for hungry birds in the winter. Pizza toast. Cover bread slices with chopped tomatoes, herbs and grated cheese, and pop under the broiler. Salad croutons. Dice your bread and fry it quickly in olive oil for homemade croutons. Brown Betty. Butter a baking dish and arrange alternate layers of chopped apples and stale breadcrumbs. Start and end with a breadcrumb layer. Sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on each layer of apples. Bake until golden brown and serve with cream. Fruit Charlotte. Dip fingers of bread in melted butter and line a cake mold. Pour in fruit compote of your choice. Seal the top with some more bread slices and bake for about 30 minutes until golden brown. Great served with custard. Fried sandwiches. Fry bread slices and put together with your favorite fillings, like ham and cheese. French onion soup. Use toasted bread cubes with grated cheese for a delicious onion soup topper.
