Indians were making a final stand to protect their lands against the push from gold seekers, cattle barons and future homesteaders. Famous hunters, like Buffalo Bill, were paid thousands of dollars to kill buffalo to feed the railroad crews building the iron rails across the plains to haul building materials, food and people westward, and cattle trains to the growing eastern cities. The best source of news and records still remain in the binderies and morgues of pioneer newspapers including today’s Weekly Register-Call, The Denver Post, and somewhere in the Denver library the rich files of the defunct Rocky Mountain News. Recently, the Weekly Register-Call reported an Indian raid story in their “Turning back the pages…” section that is worth repeating from the newspaper files dated Jan. 18, 1869, that sheds some light on one of the last major Indian battles fought prior to the Sand Creek Massacre. Here is the story from the Weekly Register-Call: “It was what the Boys in Blue call a nice little fight. We had surprised Chief Black Kettle’s band in their village. We had marched for days through sage weeds, woods, morass and sand, tediously, perseveringly. We had faced the pelting storm of snow, wading wearily through its increasing depth from its fall; and had taken brief snatches of sleep upon its soft cold bed at night. We had finally abandoned our train and supplies, and had marched all day on the enemy’s trail; and turning our backs upon the setting sun at night, steadily and vigorously pushed on. Dogs Playing Poker and Updates
O
ne of the famously iconic Dogs Playing Poker oil paintings known as Poker Game, done by Marcellus Coolidge over a century ago and part of a larger set, was sold in November 2015 for a record BY setting LARRY $658,000. JOHNSON Experts believe this may have been one of the first paintings Coolidge did with dogs and could date back to 1894. This makes it a very special part of the collection as the other paintings that Coolidge did including dogs and poker were done between 1903 and 1910. Originally, there were 16 paintings with dogs done by Coolidge in the series, but only nine have poker playing dogs included. They were done as part of a cigar advertising campaign and he was paid up to $10,000 for each one. In 2005, two of paintings, A Bold Bluff and Waterloo sold for a combined price of $590,000 at auction. These two paintings are a set and tell of the beginning and the end of a poker hand with five dogs partaking. The first painting of the set

shows one dog attempting a very bold bluff with a pair of deuces and the second painting depicts the ending of the saga with the bluff working. There are very detailed reactions from the participating dogs thavt include barking in appreciation and even surprise. Due to advertisers needs, the original names of these two paintings were changed from Judge St. Bernard Stands Pat on Nothing and Judge St. Bernard Wins on a Bluff. In one rare version that Coolidge did early on of the second painting, there is a poodle serving drinks. The most famous and widely distributed of the paintings is A Friend in Need, which shows seven dogs playing poker around a table with a bulldog right in front cheating at five card draw. If this original oil painting ever goes on the market, experts believe it will go upwards of a million dollars. The paintings never really achieved commercial success until the 1960s and 1970s when they were revived on postcards, calendars and many commercial printings. They were found in bars,

pool halls, bingo parlors, and in many personal recreation rooms throughout America – in many cases printed on a background of very gaudy velvet. Ironically, Coolidge, who did not live to see his paintings become an American institution, was known by the
nickname “Cash” during his adult years. I found my set of six prints that were reprinted in the 1940s to promote Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, deep in the back of an antique store in Rollinsville, Colorado, covered with dust, and I continue to look for the other three to complete my print collection. When seen together, the complete set of nine dogs playing poker paintings that Coolidge painted tell a story of early Americana and the country’s fascination with the game of poker. Their expressions, their many actions, and their resulting reactions cover many of the emotions felt by humans at the poker table - a century ago or today.

On a different note, be sure to check out the bad beat jackpots in your favorite poker room throughout our mountain towns, many are changing due to players input. In some rooms high hands are being paid hourly; in others the bad beat payout methods are changing to smaller payouts but easier to hit; while in others the rooms continue

to keep the higher qualifiers in an attempt to build higher bad beats jackpots. By keeping abreast of each room and their bad beat requirements, players can play where it makes the most sense for them. If playing for a big payday but with fewer hands that can hit it - play where there is a big one. If playing a lot of hours - maybe a room where they pay more beats or hourly high hands would be better. And yep - Bad Beats do hit, usually when least expected. It could happen!
2015 results
Finally, a quick update on my 2015 overall results. With two winning sessions booked during the last week of the year for $480 and $510, resulting in a combined win of $990, my poker book ended the year positive a whopping $111! The first three weeks of 2016 has started out well with two small winning sessions here in Colorado and one at the Bellagio Poker Room in Las Vegas. WHOO HOO - here we go! Remember - play your game!

Going Green
Reap big home energy savings now and later
B
aby, it’s been cold outside and home energy bills in Colorado are skyrocketing. Have you ever checked to see how much insulation is in your attic? Have you ever felt cold breezes coming around your single-pane windows? Have you considered replacing your outdated heating and cooling equipment? If your insulation, windows, heating and air conditioning equipment are not up-to-date, you may be wasting valuable green energy and running up big utility bills. Here’s how you can be really green and enjoy more comfort while saving some big bucks.
Insulation and windows
Many times you may want to choose greener options to help our environment but it may cost you money that is hard to recapture. This is one option that can save you 20-30 percent on your utility bills, depending on the climate in your area and the age and construction of your house. Older homes reap a great percentage of savings because energy was cheaper then, and there was not so much awareness of a need protect our environment. If your home was built before 1970, replacing old and thin insulation with a foot of safe, efficient fiberglass installation can reap a boatload on year-round energy savings. In the winter, the insulation resists the cold air to save on your heating bills, and in the summer, the same insulation keeps your cold air in to save on your electric cooling bills. The reason older homes need insulation: Only about 4 to 5 inches of insulation was installed in typical pre-1970 homes. Now the standard amount of insulation is about 15-16 inches, according to construction codes that vary by area and climate. Furthermore, Colorado’s brick homes built in the early 1900s may not have any insulation. Why? Most of these homes had outside brick

walls with touching inside cement-like masonry walls that left no room for insulation. In addition to great savings on your utility bills now, you may recapture and even earn money on your investment when you sell your home, according to Realtor.com. That’s right, for every $100 spent invested for insulating your attic and/or walls, you can recapture about $117 when you sell your home because our home then is worth that much more. Mathematically that is a recoup of all your insulation costs, plus an additional 17 percent.

Window replacement
For a typical home built before 1970, replacing single-pane windows that have steel or aluminum casing with double-pane windows with modern plastic composition or wood casing can save you big bucks. For more energy savings, replace large single-pane picture windows with new resistance-coated doublepane windows.

Replacing outdated heating and cooling systems
If you have a wood-burning fireplace, you really should replace it with a gas-burning log unit. Burning wood creates lots of toxic waste in the environment and is forbidden in many places. Older forced air furnaces were not equipped with efficient gas burning units or electric fans to force the air efficiently through ducts. Consider shopping for a new furnace to save both gas and electricity. Evaporative swamp coolers, which blow water vapors through vents and filters, are very efficient ways of cooling your home in Colorado because of its dry air. In high humidity climates, they put too much moisture into your home. Air conditioners also have become more energy efficient in their use of electricity in recent years.

Our cabin completed, our quartz pulled down from the mine and the quartz mill about ready to grind, though our provisions were getting below the standard mark, we all felt optimistic. We forgot we were working just below the Snowy range, never thought of any danger from the snow banks and storms from the high Boulder Mountains. For these storms, we were not prepared. At last the storm came—whirled the snow down to us, singing its mournful song around our cabin and the ledges of rock back of our home. All this seemed to us so uncalled for, that we did not deserve treatment of this nature! However, the laws of nature cannot be Central City about 5 p.m. Upon inquiring, changed. the clothes on my back. The boys doubled up with other miners and I again went to Dalton Mill at Black Hawk Pointe, so as to be there in the morning. It was then about midnight. I rested on the rocks, near the creek, saw the engineer testing the gauge clocks and heard them whistle. I intended to ask the engineer for shelter, but on a second thought said, “No, the man will certainly think you are a criminal, or a tramp, account of being half dressed. No blankets and no other traps for me.” I felt very sad and forlorn and hungry and cold, and commenced to shiver. All of a sudden, I saw steps outside of the mill leading to a floor above the engine room. I crawled up those steps very carefully, thinking of the warmth near the smoke stack against which I was going to lean. I had traveled 28 miles and was just about ready to give up. I found a bunch of miners sleeping in their bunks, and heard one groaning quite loud, as if he were in distress or pain. I crawled to him. He was a Norwegian, sick and full of pain. Spoke to him and said, “Oh, stranger, what is the trouble?” He replied, “I have roomer ticks—rheumatism— will you rub me?” He had a bottle of liniment and I certainly did give him a helping hand as well as I could. I asked him what his name was and he replied, “John Olson. You are so kind, stranger.” After several hours of sleep, later that morning, I began hoisting quartz for B.F. Dalton Mill.

Colorado History Colorado’s World War II concentration camp
On the Eastern Plains of Colorado, the foundation ruins of a concentration camp can be found, a solemn reminder of Colorado history. It is also the remains of a misguided American policy that ended in October 1945. Located one mile west of Granada, and one mile south on Prowers County Road 23.5, the site of the Amache Concentration Camp is marked with a stone memorial to those interred in the camp. Perhaps most poignant of all is the tiny cemetery located just south of the site. The remains and memorials, while honoring the people forced onto the site, remind us of a sad period in Colorado history. In the mass hysteria following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941, many of America’s friends and neighbors suddenly became enemies. The popular logic of 1941 America was “once a Japanese, always a Japanese.” The general feeling was that if it came to a choice, the “Jap” would align himself with his native homeland. In most cases concerning the Japanese American, nothing could be farther from the truth. The general attitude among the American public against the Japanese was fostered, and gained momentum, among the political leaders and the media. Among the media, the most prominent and outspoken against the “enemy” was columnist Walter Lippman, who said, “The civil rights of minority citizens could be set aside for national security.” In February 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order No. 9066, authorizing the United States Army to remove all people of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast, inland to something called “War Relocation Camps,” a political term meaning concentration camps. The forced removal of American citizens without due process was an act that many called unconstitutional. This act troubled the nation for decades, finally leading to reparations many years later. Colorado Gov. Ralph Carr, much to his credit, as well as the apprehension of his political backers, let the U.S. War Department know the Japanese Americans would be welcomed in Colorado. In 1942, the War Relocation Authority acquired 8,000 acres of land, (the site would eventually grow to 12,000 acres,) located in eastern Colorado not far from the Kansas

border and just southeast of presentday Granada. The camp was named Amache after the Cheyenne Indian wife of Colorado pioneer and wealthy cattle rancher, John Prowers, for whom the county was named that now hosted the Japanese concentration camp. The Amache Relocation Center became one of 10 such concentration sites in the United States. Army contractors built the camp as any military base previously constructed. Within three months, rows upon rows of military barracks were erected, as well as a school, church and community center. The first train carrying the “relocated” (the term in vogue at the time), Japanese Americans arrived in August 1942. Provided with tools and scrap wood, the “relocated” made their own furniture and other necessities required for quarters in the barracks. There was no electricity for several months. A few of the barracks had access to water, but for a time many of the residents had to walk a good distance to the irrigation ditch. By 1943, 7,000 Japanese Ameri-

the soldiers, who by now were fighting side-by-side with their Japanese American citizens. Conversely, the measure actually passed in Denver, where The Denver Post advocated the measure in no small degree, as is evident by this editorial statement: “… The Japs in this country are the same breed of rats that American boys are trying to exterminate in the Pacific.” What the Post editors didn’t say was that by mid-1943, nearly 1,000 of these “rodents” who lived at Amache had joined the armed services and 45 of these volunteers had been killed in action. The dedication, adaptation and patriotism these people showed did not go without notice across America. In February 1943, U.S. Army Cpt. William S. Fairchild arrived at the Amache concentration camp. He addressed the nearly 10,000 inhabitants in a glowing speech of their determination and obvious patriotism. Because of these qualities, the United Armed Forces also realized they could use the abilities of these people. Williams announced that men between the ages of 18 and 38 could volunteer for special defense work. Thousands volunteered and served in the European theater. Many Japanese Americans lost their lives in defending their home, the USA. One of the best kept secrets of World War II was the use of some 6,000 Japanese Americans as “the eyes and ears” of the allied forces fighting the Japanese in the Pacific. President Truman called them “our human secret weapon.” All volunteers, the Japanese Americans translated captured Japanese documents, maps, battle plans, diaries, letters and various publications. They interrogated Japanese prisoners, intercepted enemy communications, and even made staged propaganda broadcasts to the enemy. The Amache Concentration Camp was officially closed on Oct. 15, 1945, following the end of World War II. The land was eventually sold and the buildings discarded for their lumber. Within a year, Amache became a ghost town. Today, there are few signs of Amache. A few concrete foundations remain among the sage and windblown grassland. A county dump sits less than a half mile north of the site. A small cemetery, just a half mile south of the site, with approximately 125 graves, gives somber tribute to the inhabitants of Amache. An impressive memorial was erected at the site in 1983, 38 years after the war ended. It is in honor of those Japanese who sacrificed in both civil and military life, to World War II and the American cause.

(Unlike most nobles, he was not offered for ransom due to his proximity to the French throne, although he was allowed to live in the manner of a noble, which beats chains and a dungeon.) His poem mournfully expresses the contrast between Chaucer’s happy mating of birds in the spring and his own prolonged confinement. When he was finally released (rumored to be speaking better English than French) he married a third time to Marie of Cleves and lived to age 70. He was interesting enough to be named a character in Shakespeare’s “Henry V.” Valentines were sporadically exchanged over the next few centuries, but in the 1850s, the custom blossomed. Cards ranged from simple woodcut varieties to elaborate artwork decorated with gold or silver leaf, paper or fabric lace, silk flowers, and the ever popular embossed cupid. They often went unsigned or signed with initials only, to add to the mystery. In America, Esther Allen Howland is often considered the Mother of Valentines. However, recent research maintains that Jotham Wood Taft actually made the country’s first valentines in Grafton, Mass., while Esther began as one of his designers. She later became very successful in her own right. Because Taft was a Quaker, none of his cards ever bore his name, in part due to a promise he made to his mother. In any event, both of their valentines were quite expensive even in 1850, ranging from $5 to nearly $30, the equivalent of several weeks’ pay for those of modest means. Along with cards, a favorite Valentine’s Day gift has long been chocolate, which entered the picture as an aphrodisiac early in the

game. The first to enjoy the love potion, the ancient Aztecs, drank it straight and bitter, without the sugar and fat in mixtures we love today. The Spanish brought chocolate to the New World in the 16th century. In 1643 when the Spanish princess Maria Theresa gave her fiancé Louis XIV an engagement gift of chocolate wrapped in a fancy box, he was so taken with his gift that he appointed Sieur David Illou to manufacture and sell chocolate. He raved about its erotic potential along with Casanova and the Marquis de Sade. All three reputedly, did quite well romantically, with or without chocolate. gift. Instruction manuals for 19th century courting couples usually devoted at least a chapter to the subject of floriography, which attached special meaning to every flower. Although the message might vary slightly (and sometimes radically) depending on the book, complex sentiments could be attached to floral arrangements, forcing the recipient to spend hours trying to decipher the meaning of a bouquet. The Victorians and Edwardians also loved jewelry. Oddly, enameled serpents and snakes with diamonds or garnets for their eyes were all the rage. Interestingly, Prince Albert’s ring to Victoria, a snake with its tail in its mouth, was considered a symbol of love eternal. Also popular, cameo and intaglio (the reverse of a cameo) on both brooches and rings were made from shell, coral or stone and sometimes surrounded by precious gems. Hair jewelry was an odd product of the era in both England and the United States. Tightly woven strands of human hair would be used in instead of gold chain in a necklace or bracelet. The Victorians attached special meanings to all things romantic, especially gifts exchanged between lovers. Gloves and gauntlets were always popular, since they signified honesty and friendly intentions. A fan for a lady would spark the flame of love, while a pair of doves bespoke marital harmony. The silver spoon stood for purity and true beauty, particularly when decorated with a scallop shell symbolic of the love goddess Aphrodite. Along with the possibilities mentioned above, today’s favorite gift choices include music, body care products, perfume and even electronics. However, one can only imagine what the Victorians would think if they heard Beyoncé on iPhone singing “My Heart Will Go On.”
Winged cupid was often portrayed as a plump little cherub.

right hand. Guess who it frowns at when I hold it in my left hand? There was one positive though, or at least I thought it was a positive at first. During the tennis elbow ordeal, we had to replace our mouse and we replaced it with a cordless mouse that can easily be placed on either side of the computer. Wonderful! Or so I thought until I tried to use it with my left hand. The cursor flitted around the screen like a bumblebee. I’m getting better at it, but cutting and pasting text still takes twice as long and is half as accurate. Fortunately, when I can’t stand using the mouse with my left hand one more minute, I can move it to my right side—or toss it across the room … with either hand. General Custer’s campaign Continued from Page 2 “The officers were assembled by Gen. Custer, and all cautiously crept up to the crest of the hill overlooking the valley below and the surroundings were carefully noted. It was a moment of exultation, and the general’s enthusiastic instructions were quickly and eagerly given and received. The band struck up Garry Owen, and the platoons swept down with a yell from every side upon the doomed village. The savages sprang into ditches and holes, and behind trees and bushes and opened a raking fire from every direction with bullets and arrows. Some with the terror stricken squaws and papooses, fighting as they ran. “Those strove hard to reach the ponies to mount, but few were successful in doing so. Sharp and loud rang the rattling carbines, echoed back by the hills and bluffs on every side. Swift and sure rode the troopers, whose lines soon extended across the valley, furiously tearing after the flying enemy, many of whom hit the snow, miles beyond their village, where their bodies were not afterward seen nor counted. Gradually all the Indians were hunted from their cover like wild animals whose escape is cut off, and the fire slackened. “One hundred and three bodies were found around the village proper, but many wounded escaped. A few of the squaws took part in the fight, using pistols. Others were spared, except those who had been seen to murder white captive children in their hands. Those instantly met the fate of their warrior braves. The ground was strewn with blankets, robes and clothing, shed by the fugitives. A great many rifles, pistols, saddles, lariats, bridles, robes, etc. were taken; also large quantities of ammunition, dried meat, and other food, all of which we destroyed, together with 51 lodges. When the squaws and children were overtaken, collected together and turned back in their flight, they defiantly and resignedly chanted their war death songs. Even the youngest did this, expecting to be put to death. “Capt. Louis Hamilton, Major J.H. Elliott, and Brevet Liet. Col. A Barnitz fell in the fight. Chief Black Kettle had for some time been disposed to keep peace with the whites, but had been overruled by his tribe. At the first sound of the horse’s feet, when the cavalry approached, he sprang outside his lodge, and sounded the war whoop, then shouted that the whites were coming to kill them all, and that he was glad of it. Thus he fell, and died with his faithless braves though “seeking for the right.” The battle is over, and the field covered with dead animals and savages, muddy and smeared, and lying upon each other in holes and ditches. The field resembles a vast slaughter pen. We have 55 prisoners.” (Writer not identified.) One of the last Indian battles, and history records what ultimately happened to General Custer at the Battle Of Little Big Horn later in the Indian wars.
