I still enjoy a $2 breakfast at Saratoga on occasion and that is one of the best deals anywhere. “Streak” is a blackjack derivative game where players can bet on winning two hands in a row up to five hands with odds increasing rapidly all the way to 39-to-1 if a player can win five consecutive hands against the dealer. It always seems like the dealer is streaking, as they constantly pull 20s against the players, at least that is the way it seems. The great odds that the dealer enjoys is getting to take their hit card last after many of the players have busted out of the game. The 10 “scare card” makes players usually hit everything below a 17, and the dealer goes last. Players generally follow the book on when to hit, but the book isn’t always right. Hitting a 12 against a dealer’s 12 is one of the hardest decisions to make. Splitting pairs is usually a good practice, but not against a dealer 10 face card. Another derivative is Buffalo Blackjack where players can match their bets that the dealer will bust on taking a hit card. For example, you have a 20 and the dealer shows a six. The amount of your original bet can be bet on the Buffalo spot that the dealer will bust. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t. There is nothing worse than the dealer turning over a five for an 11, hitting it with a 10 and winning the hand, happens a lot. The casinos know what they’re doing when they add these games running millions of computer hands to see what the odds are in winning, and losing, and the game wouldn’t be presented if it didn’t favor the house. Going Green

Save bucks with energy audits and cost-saving appliances

Often we think “going green” will be costly, but you can be reimbursed many times and also recapture some of the original cost through lower utility bills. Colorado’s Xcel Energy Company now offers many substantial rebates for conducting home energy audits and buying new energy-saving appliances, thermostats, cooling and heating units, etc. If you want to upgrade your appliances or if one breaks suddenly, it can save you some bucks to buy the newer green models. Before writing this article, I talked with a knowledgeable Xcel customer service representative who recommended that if you are serious about saving energy and money, you should have a home energy audit to help you determine the right energy-saving improvements for your home. The audit can help you save money

on home improvements that can lower your energy bill for years to come. The customer service representative pointed out that customers can receive up to a $200 rebate on personalized home energy audits with a home expert efficiency that can set you on the path to lower energy bills and a more comfortable, efficient home. Every home is different. That’s why an in-person evaluation is so important. A qualified energy auditor will identify opportunities for improvement. You’ll receive a customized plan that includes valuable tips and tricks to help you conserve energy and reduce monthly bills. There’s no obligation, and you can apply those recommendations as you see fit. The comprehensive infrared whole-house audit includes inspection of your home’s exterior

(such as windows and doors), analysis of insulation levels, performance and general condition of your mechanical systems, a carbon monoxide test, and analysis of your utility bills. Infrared images provide a better idea of what’s happening behind your drywall and other areas that can’t be seen plus thermo images of the walls and ceilings. Leaked air increases your energy bills because it needs to be heated or cooled again. More technical audits even include a blower door diagnostic

tool to determine how much air your home loses each hour through leakage. The audits offer even more tailored solutions to combat air loss and energy consumption.

ing point for determining energy saving opportunities. This tool requires you to invest time (20-30 minutes) but no money.

Appliance and light bulb savings

You also can take a cost-free energy assessment online to quickly uncover potential energy savings. An online energy assessment is a free online Xcel Energy tool that interviews you about your equipment and operating conditions to uncover areas where energy and cost savings opportunities may exist. Based on industry averages and trends, regional data, and customer knowledge of the facility, the online tool is a start-

Energy efficient appliances and light bulbs may cost a bit more up front, but they can save big money over the life of the product. Xcel Energy offers rebates to help reduce the costs of implementing qualified energy efficiency measures, such as geothermal heat pumps, water heaters, air conditioners, LED lighting, tankless water heaters, and more. When shopping for a new appliance, carefully read the labels on the floor models for details on actual energy savings. Many labels estimate the yearly savings in utility bills over your older appliance. For more information visit www.xcelenergy.com or call a customer service agent at 1-800895-4999.

the stone to Germany. The red diamond was later discovered by U.S. General Joseph McNarney in a salt mine, but the General believed the stone to be a ruby. The stone eventually entered the private collection of an anonymous diamond connoisseur, in which it remained for 30 years. The Kazanjian Bros. Inc. purchased it in February 2007. The previously unnamed 5.05-carat Red Diamond thus acquired the name “Kazanjian Red” diamond. The Kazanjian Red was put on display at the Morgan Memorial Hall of Gems of American Museum of Natural History in New York, from October 1, 2010 to March 13, 2011. The whereabouts of this diamond today is not known. The world’s first largest red

diamond is the Moussaieff Red, a 5.11-carat, trilliant-cut, fancy red, internally flawless diamond. In the rough state, this diamond weighed 13.90 carats. It was discovered by a farmer in Brazil in the mid-1990s. The rough diamond was acquired by the William Goldberg Diamond Corporation of New York, who transformed it into a spectacular triangular brilliant. The color of the diamond is a fine ruby red, and was initially given the name “Red Shield” by the Goldberg Corporation. The diamond was later acquired by the Moussaieff jewelry firm, around the year 2001, for a rumored $8,000,000, and after this transaction the diamond acquired the name Moussaieff red. The Moussaieff red diamond is set as the centerpiece in a platinum ring.

Gemstones & Minerals

Old garnet hatpin is really a red diamond

The DeYoung red diamond was in the possession of Sidney DeYoung of J & SS DeYoung Inc. Founded in 1835 as diamond cutters and dealers in natural pearls, colored gemstones and antique jewels, the firm was based in Boston, Massachusetts. The stone had been acquired by his establishment as a part of a collection of estate jewelry in which it was wrongly identified as a red garnet. The item that included the stone had been labeled as a garnet hat pin! But one day Sidney DeYoung happened to examine the garnet hatpin a little more closely. He noticed the so-called garnet just didn’t look quite like a garnet. Moreover, he observed that for an old stone, it was remarkably clean

and wasn’t scratched up. This observation aroused his suspicions, and so he had the stone tested by a gem-testing laboratory. His suspicions were confirmed, and it turned out that the so-called garnet was in fact not a garnet, but a red diamond, the third largest in the world! The DeYoung red diamond is a 5.03-carat, modified round brilliant cut, fancy dark red diamond with a slightly brownish hue, giving it the appearance of a rhodolite garnet. It is the third largest red diamond in the world and is valued at approximately five million dollars. Sydney DeYoung donated the red diamond to the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution in 1987, to be added to the

National Gem and Mineral Collection. He also donated to the institution a 2.86-carat fancy intense pink diamond that came from the Williamson mine in Tanzania. The two diamonds are exhibited side by side at the Natural History Museum. The second largest red diamond in the world is the 5.05-carat, emerald-cut Kazanjian Red diamond. This red diamond was discovered as a 35-carat rough in Lichtenberg, South Africa, in 1927, during the “diamond rush” of the mid-1920s. The rough diamond was cut in Amsterdam, and after cutting and polishing, weighed 5.05 carats. The cut employed was an emerald-cut, believed to be the best cut that suited the rough stone. At the onset of WWII, the diamond’s owners placed it in a safe in Arnhem, the Netherlands, but was eventually seized by the Nazis who sent

A Tailing Tale A Tailing Tale of Clara Brown Community Leader and Philanthropist A Tailing TaLe By Maggie Magoffin

Maggie@maggiempublications.com

C

lara Brown was born into slavery near Fredericksburg, Virginia, on Jan. 1, 1800. At a young age, she and her mother were sold to a Virginian tobacco farmer who eventually moved to Kentucky. At eighteen-years-old, Clara married a slave named Richard and together they had four children: Richard, Margaret, Paulina Ann and Eliza Jane. Sadly, at 8 years of age Paulina, the twin sister to Eliza Jane, drowned. In 1835 their owner died and in the process of settling the estate the family took Clara’s family to a slave auction where they were each sold to separate owners in distant locations. A plantation owner from Kentucky sensed Clara’s intelligence and strength and placed high bids to attain her. When her owner died, Clara was 56 years old and per a stipulation in his will, she was granted her freedom. However, Kentucky law required freed slaves to leave the state and so she hired on as a maid and cook for a family heading to the westward departure point of Leavenworth Kansas Territory. From there, she was hired to work as a cook on a wagon train headed for Denver. It was a hot, difficult eight-week journey made more uncomfortable by the complaints of a southern man about a black woman traveling with them. In the Denver area, Clara PAGE 12

Clara Brown

settled in Auraria where she worked at the City Bakery. She was one of the founding members of the nondenominational Union Sunday school through her affiliation with two Methodist missionary ministers. Following the tide of miners heading into the mountains, Clara set up the first laundry in Gilpin County in Gregory Gulch. Her laundry service eventually expanded to where she took on a partner. As a result of the growth of her business, her income grew substantially. She invested her earnings in land and mine claims

and within several years accumulated $10,000 in savings. At this time, she was reported to have owned 16 lots in Denver, seven houses in Gregory Gulch as well as property and mines in Boulder, Georgetown and Idaho Springs. Clara gave generously of herself to those in her community and hosted the first Methodist church services at her house. She helped people in need in any way she could, whether newly settled Euro-Americans or Native Americans. Lovingly called Aunt Clara, her home was a hospital, a home, a

general refuge for those who were sick or in poverty. She was quoted as saying, “I always go where Jesus calls me.” The Catholic Church and the first Protestant church in the Rocky Mountains were built partly through Brown’s donations towards their construction. Clara gave of herself unselfishly to anyone who needed her, but she desperately missed her family who’d been torn from her nearly thirty years prior. With the help of friends who could write, she began sending letters asking for any information on her husband and children. She eventually heard that her husband, Richard, and daughter, Margaret had both died. Her son, Richard was lost, but she vowed to find her daughter, Eliza Jane. At the end of the Civil War, Clara liquidated her holdings to travel back to Gallatin, Kentucky. She didn’t find Eliza Jane, but she helped relatives and others who were former slaves travel to Colorado by train and wagon train, where she helped them find work once they were settled. In 1879, she went to Kansas to help former slaves build a community and farm the land. At eighty years of age, Clara’s funds were depleted due to monies spent on charitable contributions, her efforts to find her family, and having been cheated by real estate agents. She moved to Denver when she could no longer endure the higher altitude, and she lived in the home of a friend. After years of writing letters, Clara heard that Eliza Jane lived in Council Bluffs. At 82 years of age, she traveled there to meet her daughter. The Council Bluffs Nonpareil reported on March 4, 1882 that Brown was “still strong, vigorous, tall, her hair thickly streaked with gray, her face kind.” After a lengthy visit in Council Bluffs, Clara returned to Denver with her granddaughter.

THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 23 Years

She was later visited by Eliza Jane, who remained with her until Clara’s death on Oct. 23, 1885. Clara was buried in Denver’s Riverside Cemetery. Colorado state dignitaries attended her funeral, including Denver Mayor John Long Routt and Gov. James Benton Grant. The Central City Opera House dedicated a permanent memorial chair in her name.

have had various groups of people who he entertained. There were salesmen coming through town with foodstuffs for his market, men buying or selling livestock, hunting parties, Union Pacific officials (since he was the master mechanic of the entire line), and politicians. (Mr. Chapman was a Republican and was elected a member of the legislature of Wyoming in 1892.) There was an enormous amount of work for Elizabeth. There were also weddings. The one I know about was the 1910 wedding of George Hobart Chapman, son of George Fredric Chapman, to Frances Clark. Frances and her sister had been friends of Mr. Chapman’s daughter Beth since childhood. They were the daughters of Clarence Clark, the U.S. senator

from Wyoming. The wedding was not at the ranch, but there must have been a celebration there. The wedding took place in Washington, D.C., and was attended by the president of the United States. Beth was a bridesmaid. Then there were the children. Their enchantment with the ranch must have been not that different from what the Chapman children had experienced. There was so much to see and learn and plenty of room for exploration and shenanigans. The ranch was not a quiet place. The animals, “enormous herds of sheep and cattle,” made noise, as did the cowboys. The dust in the air must have been thick. Sheep and cattle were brought closer in to the corrals for branding. Sara and Ronnie watched lambs and calves being born. If they were lucky, they might have been able to bottle feed orphaned lambs. The hard part for them was watching the more violent aspects of the cowboys jobs. “… It was the branding, the roping, the earmarking, docking, etc., that made them sick to the stomach, and

yet they were so fascinated that they couldn’t take their eyes off it.” The Chapman children too had spent time at the corrals. They fed little abandoned lambs and played with the puppies of the sheepherding and hunting dogs. My grandmother Beth learned to use a lasso. After 1915 in Brookline, Massachusetts she lived with her husband two doors from the firehouse, which still used horses. One day the firemen showed up on her doorstep, holding a lasso. A horse had escaped, and they couldn’t catch it. Beth took the lasso in hand and caught that horse in one try. Sara and Ronnie played in the fields and enjoyed nature all around them. There was a hot spring by the pigs, and they would throw the hot water on the backs of the pigs making that boar very angry. Children seem to think that they are immortal! At the end of the summers it must have been very hard for the children to go back to Evanston, and difficult for Elizabeth too. Despite the hard work, there was a kind of freedom to being at Neponset Ranch.

Orchestra. When the DSO took its first national tour in 1953, Time magazine labeled it a “happy orchestra,” a term coined by Helen to describe the enthusiastic young musicians. Although the orchestra received good reviews elsewhere, Chicago audiences panned the group from the Rockies as “an adequate orchestra within its limitation of size, technique, talent and tone.” Rabid critic Claudia Cassidy of the Chicago Tribune wrote a scathing review, calling Saul Caston “a rigid conductor with little talent for music.” When the orchestra returned to Denver with a relatively small $15,000 deficit, the board refused to pay. Helen supplied the funds out of her own pocket, cashing in her insurance policy. Regarding the incident, she said later, “I have given my money and my life to Denver having a good orchestra. I’m not sorry.” The Chicago

reviews outraged certain orchestra members, who took the criticism personally and led a well-publicized revolt against Caston. Calling themselves the “Better Music Associates,” the rebels grew in strength over the next ten years. Since Helen strongly supported Caston, she stood directly in the line of fire. Ensuing bad publicity over the disputes let to dwindling public support and resources. When the city auditor refused financial assistance because the orchestra had fallen behind on rent for the auditorium, an anonymous supporter (probably Alan Phipps) donated $100,000. Caston resigned in 1963 and played his last concert to resounding applause on March 24, 1964. He died of cancer six years later. Helen stayed with the symphony until a new conductor came on board, Vladimir Golschmann of the St. Louis Symphony. She resigned on April 24, 1964, admonishing the musicians, “Lest you forget, never sell yourself short!” The board presented her with a string of pearls,

but offered no pension to the 67 year-old woman who had dedicated her life to the symphony. Fortunately, former board presidents Alan Phipps and Charles Sterne set up annuity that, in addition to her Social Security, sufficed until she entered a nursing home a few years later. A member of several civic organizations, she spent her final years doing volunteer work. Over the years, Helen supported the careers of talented young musicians, including pianist Van Cliburn and coloratura soprano Beverly Christensen. Through her public relations genius, she brought national attention to the symphony, making possible the Junior Guild, Symphony Guild and Symphony Balls. In 1983, the Denver Woman’s Press Club, of which she was past president, and the Rocky Mountain News initiated the Helen Black Arts and Letters Award in her honor, and the Symphony Guild formally recognized her contributions. She died on Jan. 31, 1988, at age 91, only a year before the Symphony went bankrupt again. A new, cooperative Colorado Symphony Orchestra rose from the ashes, playing its first concert Oct, 4, 1989. Since that time, the CSO has garnered national applause and grown to include 80 fulltime musicians from around the world.

For years, symphony concerts were held in Boettcher Auditorium, now the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.

There may be a few surprises in your DNA mix, as there were for me. That’s because people long ago did not let a lack of U-Haul and airline service keep them from migrating all over the place and starting families wherever they went. You may also be surprised to find that the DNA you share with your siblings may not be as similar as you’d think. You get 50 percent of yours from your father and 50 percent from your mother. So do

your siblings. It’s just not the same 50 percent. There’s one more thing to fight about. One Stanford University researcher I found on the Internet said it’s like having two bags of 50,000 different colored marbles. You take 25,000 out of each bag, combine them and record the results. Then you return them to the bags and take out another 25,000 from each one for the next sibling. Naturally, you’re bound to get two different sets. This explains why siblings can be so different, and why some of yours seem to have lost their marbles. Put another way, it’s like you each got a ladle of soup, but yours has more noodles. Or you each got a scoop of trail mix, but theirs has more nuts. And that helps explain why some of my Scandinavian relatives eat lutefisk.
