Front Seat: A Good Ride 2016 Kia Sorento shows up with new power FRONT SEAT
2016 Kia Sorento SXL AWD SUV
By Bud Wells
Already rolling into Colorado are several 2016-model cars and trucks, still a month ahead of the 2015 Denver Auto Show. The 2016 Kia Sorento SUV is the first I’ve driven. It’s 3 inches longer than last year’s edition and filled with refinement. So filled, in fact, the SXL all-wheeldrive Sorento carries a sticker price of $45,095. Wow. A new, turbocharged 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine, tied to a 6-speed automatic transmission, impressively moved the 4,000-pound Kia sent my way. Standard is a normally aspirated 2.4-liter 4-cylinder of 185 horsepower and also optional is a 290-hp, 3.3-liter V-6. The turbo, though out-towed by the V-6, 3,500 to 5,000 pounds, seems the better choice in responsiveness and fuel mileage. The turboed 4-cylinder, after a momentary lag, delivers torque in strong fashion in lowend and midrange acceleration. Pushing a button on the center console will alter the drive mode; before getting to the sport setting, though, it rests briefly on the eco set, and shift points between eco and sport are immediately noticeable. With most of my driving time split between normal and sport modes, the Sorento averaged 21.4 miles per gallon. Suspension is firm, with little harshness. The third-generation Sorento features a large, upright PAGE 4

grille, redesigned headlights and LED foglights and powerfolding side mirrors. Its exterior pales in comparison to several more stylistic competitors, including the new Nissan Murano. Inside, though, its upgrades are eye-catching, from its softtouch dashboard to a 39-cubic-foot cargo area, one of the largest in its class. The cabin, a five-passenger with two rows of seats (a third row is optional), is especially roomy and premium Nappa leather seats are appealing and comfortable. The front seats are heated and
ventilated and the steering wheel is warmed, too. With the Sorento’s doors locked, walk up behind the rear liftgate with the smartkey in pocket, the taillights will flash, then momentarily the liftgate begins to open. Very handy for grocery shoppers. A panoramic sunroof, Infinity surround-sound, navigation, Bluetooth, lane-departure warning, 19-inch wheels, rearview camera with additional surround view, electronic park brake and smart cruise control pushed the price to the $45k mark.

Kia is also making a move with its redesigned 2015 Sedona minivan, which hopes to lure a few sales away from the competition’s Big Four of Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Grand Caravan, Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna. I’ve driven the big Sedona, which is a bit longer in wheelbase than the Odyssey and Sienna and is only an inch shorter in overall length than the Town & Country and Grand Caravan. It did some slipping on the icy streets of late February, though is generally an above-average handler with its front-wheel

Addition of xenon HID headlights, lane-departure and forward-collision warning systems, surround-view monitor and smart cruise control boosted sticker price to $43,295 from a base of $39,700 for the Sedona SXL. Friday night poker - playing with a world champion
On a Friday when a huge storm was scheduled to blanket the entire Front Range, I woke up with a huge poker itch. I had taken a BY vacation day and LARRY wanted to get up to JOHNSON Black Hawk, play, and head home before the snow flew. Thus, late in the morning I headed up the hill. The Heartland Poker Tour televised tour stop was in town so I was sure there would be lots of players at the tables. I walked through the Golden Gates Poker Room where the satellites were taking place for the Heartland and it was hopping. Many of the regulars from the local tournament trail were present with some celebrities sprinkled in. While I was not playing the tournament this year due to time constraints, it was fun walking through the satellite area catching up with old friends. Then it was time to go get my seat in the $30 - $60 ½ Kill Limit Hold’em game at the Ameristar Casino poker room. I had called in on my way up the canyon and was able jump into a brand new must move
poker talk
game - the fifth one going. As I checked in, the main floor man said, “Moneymaker is over there,” indicating a gentleman sitting in seat 1 at the game I was getting ready to join. The floor man was referring to Chris Moneymaker, the winner of the 2003 Main Event at The World Series of Poker. I glanced over and realized the player was actually Greg Raymer, the winner of the 2004 Main Event of the World Series of Poker and a player I had met before at the Orleans Open in Las Vegas a few years before. Sitting down in the 7 seat across the table from a world champion, I was ready to play. It was a very good table to start on. It was immediately apparent that the players on the other end of the table were distracted and focused on what Raymer was saying and on my end were a few tourists and a player I knew well and who played a pretty loose game.
Over the first hour, I pulled a set of 8’s to win a good sized pot along with a few other small wins while losing with pocket Q’s and missing a few draws and was up nearly $400. Raymer was playing a very solid game with his raises almost exclusively in late position and he was winning a bit while talking it up. Interestingly enough, it’s clear why he’s successful - he really watches the game. There were two instances where he coached the dealer on a floor call and was right. Just before he left for the next must move table, I said hello across the table and let him know we had met years before at the Orleans back in 2004 (I thought it was earlier, he clarified the date as he remembered the tournament.) He was very gracious and we talked for a bit. Gotta be honest - it was pretty cool. After losing another $200 on a busted nut flush draw after he left, I was moved to the next game and ended up just to the left of Raymer. This was a fun seat. At first I listened as he talked to the other players and then we got into a discussion on a range of topics. One question I asked him was how different poker in Colorado was than in other
places across the country and he said he didn’t really see much difference except that we did have much more limit poker, adding that in most rooms the poker above the $4 - $8 level is no limit. I did pick up pocket Aces twice in the hour we played next to each other and won both times. He made the comment, “I thought Ace’s didn’t win in Colorado” after my second win with a smile on his face. Just as at the other table, he played a very steady game dropping out if raised or re-raising the raiser, while clearly thinking through his options. For me, I won a bit while he was there but then went into a tough stretch, falling behind over $1,000. I bought in again and after 6 hours of grinding play, finally came all the way back and was up $12. With the big blind coming, I quickly racked up my chips and cashed out. By the time I got home, it was 5 a.m. on Saturday morning, the sun was coming up, and the snow had started to come down. So, while I didn’t win much - the experience of playing with a world champion was well worth the trip. Thanks Mr. Raymer, it was fun and educational. Remember - play your game.

splashed the pot with chips, acted out of turn (“oh, solly, me bad.”) and in general disrupted the smooth flow of the game. For at least an hour they spoke (loudly) back-and-forth about a $30-$60 game played at least a week prior. After looking at his hand and deciding to muck, the first player held his cards ready (what a tell!) but held them so at least half the other end of the table could see what he was mucking! My neighbor remarked to the dealer that this player was either folding and/or acting out of turn a lot (at last count – 39 times) and would the dealer please control the action. That went over like a ton of bricks. I had been up and down for the entire time and was just about fed up with the discourtesy, disrespect and rudeness of these two, deciding to cash out and depart. I looked down to find Qh – Qs so made a raise and was called by two others. [The perps mentioned above mucked and began their loud conversations again ignoring the English-only rule while a hand is being played]. The flop came low cards - two hearts – so I bet large to eliminate everyone, take it down and leave; I got one caller. The turn was another heart, I bet and the caller raised, putting me all-in. All this time these two brain trusts from the land of the rising sun (or where-ever north-south of there) were talking loudly back-and-forth. I admit I

lost it; I am usually a calm, imperturbable player letting little get under my skin, but these two jokers had been doing this for an hour disrupting everything going on and I had had it. I stood up and loudly – and directly into the face of the worst offender – told him “There’s a hand going on – shut the *&%# up!” The dealer finally decided to regain order in the game admonishing me for the f-bomb when my neighbor between us said he firmly agreed with me. While the dust was settling from that little outburst I called off my remaining $45 fully expecting to be beat. The caller (remember him?) turned over Jh-4h (!) for a flush. The river brought another heart and my Qh took down a $600 pot. I cashed out and departed $400 ahead. Two things I think of in this experience: First, if people are doing things to annoy you and/or disrupt the game, speak up early – don’t let it fester and grow until a breaking point is reached. That’s what floor men are for, to resolve conflicts and issues. Second, different cultures have different standards of behavior – these two may have been merely doing what they do during games in their home country. It’s up to the dealer, the floor man and ultimately us to educate them on behavioral standards so they can be thinking about poker (and how it is played in these parts).

uly 31: After getting one of their horses shod and making the animal good © Anna Lee Ames Frohlich for at least a few more miles, George and Coughlin, in their urgency to see a newspaper, approached some boys who were swimming in the Weber River. They convinced one of the boys to go to town to get a paper for them. Workers from the nearby railroad yards saw them talking to the boys and were suspicious. After watching them and noting that their guns were always in readiness, the railroad freight hostler stayed to talk with them. He inquired about the sorry state of their horses. One of them replied, “We’ll make them carry us to Salt Lake tonight or kill them.” Meanwhile Section Foreman Cullen left to telephone the police. At about this time, the young man who had gone to fetch a paper showed up with a Salt Lake Tribune. Upon reading it, our sometimes careless desperadoes became agitated, and rapidly mounted their horses, which they urged on in a southerly direction as fast as the miserable beasts were capable of moving. The horses were not the only ones in this group that were hurting. During the gunfight at Palmer’s cabin on July 30, Fred George received a flesh wound. He had been hit in the thigh, the bullet passing through to his other thigh. Coughlin had tried to take out the lead, but the wound was in need of further attention. The people of Kaysville and Farmington reported seeing the daring young outlaws, armed to the teeth and riding hell bent for leather, at between 7 – 8 p.m. They were headed toward Salt Lake. At the time, posses and groups of officers, guided by sightings by the Salt Lake posse and the observations of people who had seen them the night before, were beginning to close in on them. Lawmen began spreading out in all directions especially around Beck’s Hot Springs and City Creek Canyon. At about 3:45 a.m. Aug. 1, a

Newspaper drawing of Patrick Coughlin Capt. Donovan and four officers were riding in a patrol wagon to the east of Beck’s Hot Springs. They passed a caravan of vegetable wagons. When they passed a covered wagon, they did not see that Coughlin and George were riding on the other side of it until they had passed the wagon and the outlaws had taken off to the hills around City Creek Canyon. Coughlin later commented to the officers, “Say, next time you go out in the patrol wagon, just put out the lights.” Donovan and his officers gave chase in their patrol wagon, but they were stymied when Coughlin and George turned up the canyon where the wagon could not follow. The driver left to get six horses but returned with only two. Donovan and another officer took the two horses and started their pursuit.
The chase continues from the Weber River to City Creek. They caught up to two other officers who had been sent to guard the canyon. The four continued the pursuit together until they were stopped by a bullet shooting by uncomfortably close to the head of one of them. The pursuers took questionable refuge behind their horses from where they could see Coughlin and George on the top of a rocky outcropping. All of a sudden the desperadoes darted toward their horses. As they were mounting up one of the officers shot and dropped one of the horses. Amid a volley of bullets, the boys deserted both horses, ran, and mysteriously blended into the brush. The police looked up and down the whole canyon and the surrounding area but could not

find the wily two who had completely dropped out of sight. Even bloodhounds were brought in. Had the posse not chased them away from their horses, they would have been easier to find than on foot in the brush. Coughlin’s horse, though wounded, was still alive despite being shot through the back just below the backbone. This was the sorrel horse that had been stolen on July 24 from the barn of Mr. Rule near Salt Lake. When the horse was returned, Rule commented that it had lost 100 pounds and had a hole through its back. The search expanded and moved beyond the canyon. It was assumed by some that the disappearing twosome had totally left the area and
might not ever be found. The truth was that they never moved very far and stayed still and quiet while the posse strafed the heavily foliaged slopes with six hundred rounds of ammunition. Searchers and a bloodhound came very close to them but always far enough away that the boys did not have to shoot. Coughlin gently pushed the bloodhound away with his rifle. From the beginning of the chase the consensus of public opinion as reflected in newspapers of the area was that Coughling and George would be caught soon. This turned to: “How Salt Lake’s ‘Finest’ Were Cleverly Outwitted by the Daring Young Outlaws.” “A Wonderful Case of ‘Now You See ‘Em, Now You Don’t.’ ”

Boardinghouses My home for the present time
You step off the train in a new town, circa 1890. You need a safe and clean place to live for a week or a month or maybe longer. Where do you stay? For a reasonable rate, a boarding house would provide you with a furnished sleeping room and three hot meals day. For nearly 100 years, these large many-bedroomed houses were found in nearly every town and city, providing affordable communal lodging for solo travels and local working class residents: maidens, old maids, widows, unmarried working men and sometimes newlywed couples starting out on a lean income. You settled yourself into a basic, hopefully clean, room that was furnished with just a bed, dresser and chair. Downstairs in the public dining room you joined the other boarders for a hopefully delicious meal. This cozy sometimes cramped living arrangement was a practical option for many types of workers: miners, laborers, loggers and traveling salespeople was well as bank tellers, store clerks, schoolteachers, laundresses and seamstresses. In towns like Ouray and Manitou Spring, boardinghouse residents also included tourists, healthseekers and adventurers. Boarders sometimes arrived for a prolonged stay with a huge trunk containing all their worldly belongings. For young adults, a boardinghouse became a safe passage as they left the family home and entered the wageearning workforce. The reputable boardinghouse furnished a measure of decorum, spiced with a bit of freedom and fun. Sometimes romance blossomed and discrete courtships unfolded, under the watchful eye of the boardinghouse matron who knew that an appearance of respectability was priceless and often fragile. The parlor was the gathering place for leisure and entertainment, complete with a piano. Boarders gathered for music, singing, poetry readings, charades and other quaint, simple past times. Perhaps a bookshelf stood in the corner, encouraging you to broaden your mind. Your boardinghouse keeper was likely a woman who possessed savvy entrepreneurial skills. Your landlady acquired and maintained the building, secured renters, collected rent and evicted unsavory or rentdelinquent boarders. She supplied her guests with meals, clean rooms and laundered sheets, often hiring young women to help with these

Critics, cartoonists, novelists and even playwrights taunted the economical lodging for its poor-quality food, stingy meals, dingy sheets, amorous landlady or questionable moral atmosphere. “Boardinghouse Betty” was a nickname for the landlady’s layabout husband who kept out of sight as his wife handled her variety of business and financial transactions. The Boarding House Reach was stretching across the table instead of asking, “Please pass the butter.” Some landladies were guilty of cramming, stuffing the house with as many boarders as possible, so that the dining became a bedroom and guests had to dine in the kitchen. Gemstones & Minerals mass, comprising large parts of present day Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea, must once have been covered with vast forests in which the amber pines grew. Precious Sea Coral - Coral is the branchlike, chalky calcite framework of the coral polyp and is formed by the organic growth of colonies of these tiny marine animals. There are many varieties of coral, but only a few of these are called precious coral. A popular coral is usually found in light to dark tones of red to orangy red. The color is caused by a small amount of organic matter, plus some iron oxide. There is a black variety called “king’s coral” used mostly in the Orient. Another type, blue coral, which was found in Africa, is now almost unknown. Hawaiian gold coral was discovered in small amounts in 1971 off Makapuu Point in 1,200 feet of water. In the year 2,000, two new beds of gold coral were discovered 100 miles south of Oahu. Both beds are at a depth of about 1,300 feet. Hawaiian gold coral grows at a rate of about 3 inches a year
and only 3 percent of the bed can be harvested annually. Both state and federal laws strictly regulate the harvest. Of all precious coral, gold coral is the most rare. Petrified Wood - Petrified wood is a real wood that has turned into rock composed of quartz crystals. Through the process of petrification the wood has been preserved for millions of years. This process turns the wood into quartz crystal, which is very brittle and shatters. Even though petrified wood is fragile, it is also harder than steel. Petrified wood is known for its exquisite color and detail. Some pieces have retained the original cellular structure of the wood and, also, the grain can easily be seen. Petrified wood can be found throughout the desert regions. One of the greatest concentrations of petrified wood in the world is found in the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. Logs as long as 200 feet and 10 feet in diameter have been found in the park. Jet - Jet (ignite) is a geological material and is considered to be a

minor gemstone. Jet is not considered a true mineral gemstone, but rather a mineraloid, as it has an organic origin, being derived from decaying wood trees under extreme pressure over millions of years. It formed as a result of the compaction of driftwood that sank to the sea bottom and became imbedded in fine-grained mud. Jet is found in one of two forms: hard and soft. The “hard” jet is the result of the carbon compression and salt water. The “soft” jet is the result of carbon compression and fresh water. The name “jet” is an English word derived from the French word “jaict” of the same meaning. It is usually black and easily polished. It is used for making jewelry as far back as 10,000 BC in parts of modern day Germany. The finest jet has always been found and worked near the coast of England. It occurs in lumps of variable sizes, often retaining the shape of the branches and twigs of the trees of which it evolved. Jet is also found in the U.S., Spain and Germany.

And the result, ultimately, is the pearl. The largest pearl on record was recovered from a giant clam in 1934 off the coast of Palawan Island in the Philippines. The pearl weighs 14 pounds. The Muslim diver who found the pearl said its surface bore the image of a turbaned face, so he named it the Pearl of Allah. Pearl, that non-mineral gem, is one of the birthstones for June. Amber - It is commonly known that amber is not a mineral but a solidified resin from ancient trees. It is one of the few non-mineral gems that is used as jewelry. True amber is light enough to float in salt water. The massive concentration of amber along the Baltic Sea suggested that an enormous forest had once grown on that very same spot. However, that proved to be wrong, for today we know that the place of discovery is not the place of origin. A land-

In the world of gems and minerals, there are some nongems and non-minerals that are used for jewelry and ornamentation. Some of the most popular include pearls, amber, coral, petrified wood and jet and are described in the following paragraphs. Pearl - The natural pearl begins its life as a foreign object, such as a parasite or piece of shell that accidentally lodges itself in an oyster’s soft inner body where it cannot be expelled. To ease this irritant, the oyster’s body takes defensive action. The oyster begins to secrete a smooth, hard crystalline substance around the irritant in order to protect itself. This substance is called “nacre.” As long as this irritant remains within its body, the oyster will continue to secrete nacre around it, layer upon layer. Over time, the irritant will be completely encased by the silky crystalline coatings.
