Colorado History
Rededicating the Ames Monument By Anna Lee Frohlich
On Nov. 26, 1882, a group of people, braving the cold, stood on the top of Sherman Hill above the Union Pacific railroad town of Sherman, Wyo. to honor and dedicate the recently finished Ames Monument, a 60-foot-high pyramid shaped memorial on the pass between Cheyenne and Laramie. The 60x60x60-foot pyramid with nine-foot-high likenesses of two brothers was designed by architect Henry Hobson Richardson and sculpted by Augustus St. Gaudens. The brothers — Oakes and Oliver Ames — were financiers and had been instrumental in the Union Pacific Railroad portion of the transcontinental railroad. St. Gaudens had been known for carving tiny cameos, so it was unusual that he designed these huge medallions as plaster maquettes. The figures were bas-reliefs chiseled out of long-meadow brownstone by Evans and Tombs in Boston. The monument had first been conceived by the board of the Union Pacific to honor Oakes Ames, chief financier of the railroad. Later, when his brother Oliver died, Oliver’s name and likeness were added to the monument. When Oakes’s son Oliver (later governor of Massachusetts) saw the carving of his

Although, brownstone was a favorite medium of St. Gaudes, it proved to be unsuited for the medallions on Sherman Hill. Because of its relatively soft characteristics, the monument has been badly treated over the years by weather and vandals. However, because of the softness of the stone, repairs to the medallions are not feasible. The monument is one of at least six that Richardson did for the Ames family. Jump forward to Sept. 28, 2008, when a small group of western history buffs from the Denver area were treated to a tour of the Ames Monument and the surrounding area by Larry Ostresh of Laramie. One of those in the tour was Anna Lee Ames Frohlich, great-greatgreat granddaughter of Oakes Ames. Ostresh said to her that he felt that the monument should really be a National Historic Landmark. After eight years, the National Park Service declared it one. Securing this status was no easy feat and has required the efforts of a number of people. Ostresh began learning about

history of her family from early days through the building of the Ames Monument in 1882. They decided it would help their quest to get inside the monument to document the design and construction. An old workman’s tunnel had been opened due to erosion in the 1940’s when tourists and students had crawled inside. The State of Wyoming finally allowed supporters inside the monument, but for one day only. With architects to help, the monument was measured and photographed for posterity. It has then thoroughly sealed to preserve it. Shortly afterwards, Wyoming’s State Historic Preservation Organization took over the project. A committee worked on planning the new historical signs that now decorate the monument, and another committee chose the team wrote the story of the monument that was presented in Washington D.C. to have the Ames Monument made into a National Historic Landmark. Now, 135 years after the first dedication, the monument is about to be honored and dedicated for the second time. The celebration will begin on July 7, with a symposium of speakers and a dinner. July 8 will be the actual dedication with politicians, introductions and ribbon cutting. Following the ceremony, tours will be available of the old Sherman town site and the Dale Creek trestle that are part of the story of the Ames Monument.

The farming yields the company in hay, oats, wheat and vegetables, an average of about $8,000 a year. The placer lands patented, as well as the whole valley and mountains, in this region, show the “color” in every pan of dirt, but the necessary water supply for washing, has heretofore been wanting to make these diggings

profitable. To supply this want, the Rollins Company, after securing titles to the best lands, commenced building a canal and flume to take the water from the river and carry it along the side of the mountain where the necessary fall can be had to work the placers by hydraulic methods. The canal is nearly three miles in length, six feet deep, capable of furnishing sufficient water to run a number of Little Giant hydraulics for placer mining, with a pressure of 160 feet.

Going Green
Going green with indoor gardening containers When the weather gets warmer, one thinks of spring and gardening. Those who don’t have available space to plant a garden can still go green by starting an indoor garden in recycled containers. Need a little inspiration to get your garden started in containers but don’t have a lot of extra cash? Go green by using containers from recycled household items, like tea kettles, colanders, vases, antiques, and large tin cans. You can haunt yard sales and second hand stores or ask restaurant owners to save empty metal or plastic containers for you. Here are some creative ideas for growing an indoor garden.
Choose your plants wisely
If buying plants, choose the plants for your container garden
that will work with your lifestyle. You don’t like to water? Grow succulents and other drought resistant plants. Want to grow herbs for cooking? Place herb seeds or transplant bedding plants into pot soiling in small containers. Then place these containers on window sills on the south or west side of your home or
apartment. Want a more formal look for an entryway? Choose large containers in classic shapes and plant them with luxurious ferns and eye catching plants. Whatever your style, there are indoor plants that can work for your lifestyle. You just have to do a little research and experimentation to find what works. Before going to a garden shop, decide what plants you want and
of the plant to die. You can often increase drainage by drilling, punching or carving large holes. It is easiest to punch holes in plastic containers. Then place the filled, punched containers inside decorative planters.
then find out if they need sun or shade or anything in between. Plant tags are critical. They will tell you how big your plant will get, how much light, water and food it needs, and how much care it will need. The tag will also tell you about your plant’s “habit,” which means its shape and how it will grow. This is important when considering your container design.
Fertilizer your plants
Most potting soil has no accessible nutrients for your plants. The majority of plants will need fertilizer added to the soil in order to thrive. Mix a slow release fertilizer into a potting mix. To do this, either mix up a big batch of pot-
Use good quality potting soil and ample drainage
The more potting soil you use, the more water retention you will have which will give you a much great margin for error when watering and feeding your plants. Don’t take chances; fill your containers with a good quality potting soil. Having ample drainage can be a matter of life and death for your plants. When there aren’t enough holes for water to drain out of your pot, your soil may become too wet and cause the roots
ting soil with fertilizer in a bucket, or fill a pot with potting soil and then mix in the fertilizer.
Evaluate Your Light
Many people wildly overestimate how much sun their containers get. While you can find a great plant for almost any amount of light, you have to know how much light your container will get before you choose your indoor plants. To figure out how much direct light your container will get, place it where you want it and then time how long the sun hits it. Container gardening does take time and attention. If you use recycled containers and start your plants from seeds, it doesn’t have to be expensive. You will discover that some plants with thrive and some will not. When plants thrive, however, indoor gardening becomes exciting, rewarding and endlessly interesting.

THE COLORADO GAMBLER – Celebrating 25 Years
October 4 - 17, 2016
Trail’s End Mamie Doud Eisenhower The First Lady’s Denver Years Denver’s own Mamie Doud Eisenhower was the First Lady of the United States and held the position with style and grace for both of her husband’s terms, from 1953 to 1961. One biographer said “... the world never really knew Mamie Eisenhower...as she was perceived as quiet and reluctant to serve the media.” Yet Denver knew her and loved her; she was one of our own. Mamie Geneva Doud was born in Boone, Iowa, on Nov. 14, 1896, the daughter of John Sheldon and Elvira Matilda Carlson Doud. The family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa the following year, where Mamie’s father started his own meatpacking business. Very successful, the Doud family moved to Colorado for opportunity and to ease a medical condition affecting Eleanor, one of Mamie’s three sisters. They lived for a brief time in Pueblo and Colorado Springs, before moving to Denver in 1905, where the Doud family lived for the rest of their lives. With his successful business and investment holdings, John Doud was able to pay a little over $7,000 in cash for his home at 750 Lafayette Street, in Denver. This is the home Mamie would grow up in, the only family home she would know and recall with great fondness, the home she would later be married in. This house, so rich in family lore and history, would remain in the family until the death of Mamie’s mother, in 1960. The Doud’s were well known in the community as being fun-loving, involved with their neighbors, a caring, loving family, with deep religious commitments. They attended church in the community, where they often helped the needy. Mrs. Doud was the cornerstone of the neighborhood “women’s social tea.” This amazing woman organized regular social events in the neighborhood, usually hosted in her home. Among the neighborhood housewives included in Mrs. Doud’s teas, was my great-grandmother, Olga Berglund. She often

spoke of the kindness, generosity, and more importantly of the ordinary manner the Doud family preferred. Just a short seven years after arriving in Denver for a better climate, Mamie’s sister, Eleanor Carlson Doud, died Jan. 8, 1912. Sadly, Mamie’s younger sister, Eda Mae Doud, died Nov. 9, 1918. 1916, it was happy occasion was bittersweet. Ike marked the ceremony by placing a miniature copy of his West Point ring, an amethyst set in gold, on Mamie’s finger. However, the news astonished Mamie’s Denver friends. It was their opinion, that Mamie was marrying beneath her class. West Point graduate aside, he was still just a soldier, they said. And, while the Doud family had a fondness for Ike, John Doud had a stern fatherly talk with his 19-year-old daughter about life as an Army wife. In the end, Mamie’s strong will and good sense won out, as she later said, “...I was willing to accept whatever would come.” The Doud home, on Lafayette Street in Denver was the scene of the wedding, at noon, on July 1, 1916. The wedding was a grand event, yet held to the Doud family values of respectful modesty. Only family and close friends were in attendance. Even so, my greatgrandmother later recalled the narrow street scene on Lafayette as crowded and impassable, due to all the vehicles. The wedding ceremony was simple in style, yet strong on family and religious values, when Ike pledged his vows and took Mamie as his bride. Mamie was radiant in an ivory laced gown, escorted down the broad staircase by her father. Ike was equally splendid in his dress white military uniform, completed with sword and stars and bars of rank. Following the ceremony, the new couple enjoyed a 10-day honeymoon, spending the first days in Colorado. Then, the newlyweds left by train to Abilene, Kan. for a brief visit with the Ike’s parents. Looking back in history, this was perhaps Denver’s finest hour in the first decade of the 20th Century, yet no one in Denver or the nation knew at the time how important this union was, or how fortuitous it would become in later years.
