wait. I don’t. I didn’t take the time to read all 2,032 spam messages either. But before I emptied the folder, I scanned through the advertisements for DUI lawyers, cat food coupons and lonely singles in my neighborhood. As far as I could tell, there were no ships, just a whole lot of dinghies. It’s just as well. If I had found an email promising large amounts of cash, I wouldn’t have believed it anyway. You get

a little cynical after you’ve deleted a few hundred messages offering easy hair removal and Ph.Ds. without taking classes. No, if anyone wants to alert me I’ve won a $150,000 prize they’re going to need another way to do it. And it won’t be by phone either. I don’t know if he ever went to college, but I know I never got my magazine. If my ship comes in by mail, it’s likely to get buried by credit card offers and insurance offers from the AARP. By the time I get to it, they’ll have given my prize to someone else. So yes, I’m concerned that someday my ship will come in and I won’t be at the dock to meet it. And if it shows up at my front door, or by email, snail mail or the telephone, the chances are very good I’ll sink it before it gets to shore. (Dorothy Rosby is the author of the humor book, I Used to Think I Was Not That Bad and Then I Got to Know Me Better. Contact drosby@vastbb.net.)

to agree. He went on: “You write about thinking about poker an’ mebbe ya are, I cain’t tell. But yer not playin’ yer game, yer best game. So whadarya gonna do about it?” First things first, then; I rose from the table to take a break and I began – again – to think about poker. To think about what I was doing and to think about what I could do to change things from what they had been [lousy, abysmal, terrible, sh***y, etc.] to something more satisfactory. Larry Johnson also writes about poker in this magazine; he ends his column with “Play your game.” Not only was I forgetting about that which I had spent so much energy thinking about but I wasn’t playing my game, my best game. Resolving to make those changes, I returned to the tables. Now, I wish I could relate the story of an incredible turnaround. I wish I could tell you

of getting hit in the face with the deck and making incredible draw-outs and such. But I cannot; despite my best efforts and exerting incredible discipline and will power to play correctly, nothing seemed to work. And there comes a time every so often when one must read the writing on the wall – and admit to the fact that it just isn’t coming together tonight. So then with equanimity, arise from the table collecting the surviving chips from a decimated stack, bid farewell to the dealer and fellow players and depart the battlefield resolving the thought that Scarlett O’Hara voiced at the end of Gone With The Wind: “Tomorrow is another day.” A day when you can realistically think about poker and [thank you Larry] play your game – your best game. BTW – the next session I played resulted in a 25 percent profit above my buy-in.

Thinking About Poker: Equanimity Equanimity: e-qua-nimi-ty [noun] Calm temperament; evenness of temper even under stress The last few articles I have written covered, in essence, a ‘back-to-basics’ approach I decided to employ while returning to the poker world after an enforced absence. I detailed the importance of having patience; waiting for the right time and combination of factors with which to enter combat with your chips as ammunition. I stressed the importance of playing quality cards when entering a hand instead of the junk hands and personal favorites which, when realistically viewed in the statistical scheme of things, are ‘way down the line of playable hands. I mentioned the importance

PAGE 8

of your position when considering entering a hand; an attractive card combination in late position may not be playable in early position. Reviewing all that, I related some of the successes I enjoyed when returning to the tables. These successes were heartening and gave me the will to continue down the path I mapped out for myself: Back to basics with the mantra of “Patience – Position – Power” as my guide. Did pretty well, too … until one night about two weeks ago when I sat down to what I expected would be another in my string of profitable excursions into the poker world. Just like any optimist would, my expectations were high and my enthusiasm equal to the task. Well,

pretty soon it became evident that reality was not going to live up to expectations – in a way as if ‘The Duke’ was standing to one side saying “Wahl, just wait a dog-gone minute thar, Pilgrim. What the heck do ya think yer doin’ thar?” “What I’m trying to do here, Duke – and without much luck I might add – is play my game the way I know how to play it. I’m patient; well, I may have gotten a little desperate there those last few hands I’ve played. I’ve waited for good position; well, I may have gotten a little desperate there those last few hands I’ve played. And I’ve waited for powerful hands to …” Duke interrupted: “You say the right things Pilgrim, but yer not doin’ them. I seen ya – ya haven’t had a decently playable hand in over an hour and now yer tryin’ to force things ta go yer way – and it ain’t happenin’, is it?” Sheepishly I was obliged

A ranch in Wyoming and Utah: Neponset’s sheep on the trail

W

hen George Chapman and his partner Charles Strong paid off their mortgage on Sections 20 and 24 in Rich County, Utah Territory on Jan. 10, 1884, they immediately took on the new role of sheep ranchers. Included in the mortgage with various items of hardware were sheep dip, access to a dipping pen, and 3,900 sheep with marks, barley, and oats. This was a time of large movements of sheep. The great herds in the far west, which fed into the flocks to the east of there, had originated in Central Asia. They were domesticated at about the same time as dogs, 10,000 years ago. Sheep were brought to the New world by explorers including Columbus on his second voyage and Coronado in 1540. They were a convenient food supply. Some got left behind. These Mexican-Spanish ewes (improved later by purebred rams) were the basis of the great California trail herds that developed after the gold rush of 1849. Part of the California flocks had

been trailed westward from New Mexico. A contract to settle New Mexico was given in 1598 to Juan de Onate, a forward thinking man, who wanted to bring new species of plants and animals to this new colony. © Anna Lee Ames Frohlich He developed an irrigation system and grew a variety of vegetables. He brought to New Mexico large numbers of livestock including sheep. The main trade of the colony became wool, lamb, and other animal byproducts. Sheep had been reared in New Mexico for 250 years by the time wilderness guide, fur trader, and publicly-acclaimed guide to John C. Fremont, Kit Carson, went into the sheep business. Carson had fought in the Mexican-American War, which ended in 1847. At this time he had a wife, Josephina, and a family, and they started raising sheep. 1853 found Carson and his partner, Thomas Boggs, in a position to drive a large

flock of sheep from New Mexico to California. They profited well from the enterprise. It has often been considered more profitable to raise sheep than cattle. The wool profits only add to that. Raising sheep can be a quick turnaround of an investment. Carson would have Kit Carson heard about his friend “Uncle Dick” Wootton who brought 9,000 head of churros (Mexican sheep) from Taos to the Sacramento, California, area the year before 1852. Carson may have benefitted by Wootton’s story of misbehavior by his herdsmen. Carson also brought churros, 13,000. He and Thomas Boggs each took half of the flock and headed over the Sierra Nevada to the gold country. The year 1886 brought unprecedented freezing cold to the middle western states, and there were many deaths among cattle. This setback in the cattle industry lasted for several years and gave a boost to sheep raising. Neponset, in both Wyoming and

The Last Hand

Monarch hosts Monarch Continued from Page 2 lobster tail, a plate full of crab legs, and some prime rib buried underneath a growing pile of gourmet food. Sam knew everyone in the place, and he warmly visited with the staff as we moved from food station to food station finally settling in a booth where I followed his lead in ordering a cranberry juice drink. He immediately shelled his lobster, cracked his crab legs and then assisted me in the same procedure. He is a masterful crab cracker, ha. We were joined by Andrea, food and beverage supervisor, who was so friendly and nice to us both, offering to fetch more food items. At this point Sam and I were full but we opted to go back for lemon pie, chocolate cake and some soft ice cream among a fabulous array of desserts. During the strolls around the buffet area we met many of the staff, Hakim who told us that they are always “improving’ the buffet. Andrea stated that, “this is the best restaurant on the hill.” Christy was checking people into the dining area along with Rose, Mia was manning the reception desk, and I was told that Chef Anthony was hard at work in the kitchen preparing thousands of lobsters every week. Did not meet Bill the manager, but his staff was terrific, hard at work and customer friendly. Monarch held an Easter Brunch, March 27, which featured leg of lamb, ham and many special treats. Monarch is the sister property to Atlantis Casino Resort and Spa in Reno Nevada and they know how to treat their customers. The new parking structure is expected to be completed late in the 2nd quarter of this year and they expect to begin construction on the hotel later this year. The new 23-story tower will nearly double the existing space and will include approximately 500 hotel rooms, an upscale spa and pool facility, three additional restaurants and additional bars. Tower floors will be opened as they are finished, beginning with the casino expansion and additional restaurants. They currently expect completion of the entire tower in 2018. Hotels help the entire Black Hawk/Central City area as more people come as a destination and visit the many casinos. What we need next is a new convention center. Sam and I played some blackjack with pit boss Elizabeth keeping her eye on the play with busy tables and the jingle of slot games through the newly carpeted and remodeled casino area. Black Hawk and Central City are both great cities to visit and the cuisine everywhere is terrific. I still want to get back to the Century for one of those foot-long hot dogs featured downstairs. Whatever your taste and budget, the casinos have it all.
