By Bud Wells There’s not a lot of glamour associated with the 2015 Volkswagen Golf TSI SE hatchback, yet I seemed, over and over, to look for reasons to get into its driver’s seat and maneuver it all over town. This allure might explain its surprising choice as car of the year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. The little Golf beat out a couple of hot-shot finalists – the Ford Mustang and Hyundai Genesis – for the honor. The new Golf, a five-passenger compact, sits an inch lower, is two inches longer and looks a bit sportier than last year’s model. It shows refinement inside and, with the small turbocharged engine, is fun to drive (except for the turbo lag on takeoff). Its sticker is just over $25,000. Another Volkswagen I drove recently which might be an even better value is the 2015 Jetta SE four-door. It doesn’t have a backup camera and there is no navigation screen. Let me tell you what it does have – the 1.8 turbocharged engine and manual transmission producing fuel mileage into the 30s, heated front seats, SiriusXM satellite radio and Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity. That for a sticker price of $20,810. While the Golf’s wheelbase is only an inch shorter than that of the Jetta’s, it is 16 inches shorter in overall length. At 3,023 pounds on a wheelbase of 103 inches, the Golf is a superb handler; the German engineering is appreciated. The front-wheel-drive configuration performs well with the

1.8-liter turbo 4-cylinder developing 170 horsepower and 200 lb.ft. of torque and tied to a 6-speed automatic transmission. It has strut front and multilink rear suspension and rides on Continental ProContact 225/45R17 tires. The Golf averaged 31.2 miles per gallon in overall driving. Small, inconspicuous paddle shifters are easy to touch and use with the transmission’s manual mode. The Golf’s out-of-the-way
touch-shifters contrast in appearance with the 6-inch-long magnesium paddles on the Infiniti QX70 which replaced the VW in my driveway. Inside the VW are firm, supportive perforated leather seats (heated in front), a 5.8-inch touchscreen display with small but clear-imaged backup camera and flat-bottomed steering wheel. The rear-seating area has added legroom and headroom and the

cargo space behind the rear seats has grown from less than 16 cubic feet to more than 22. As for the Jetta, few cars in that price range will handle better than the German product (built in Mexico) from VW. Rural roads with their bends and knolls and short-stretch straightaways brought out the best in the front-wheel-drive Jetta. It exhibits precise steering. The Jetta is Volkswagen’s best-selling model,

ahead of the Passat and Golf. I reviewed the first Jetta, an 1980 model, 35 years ago; it was 15 inches shorter than today’s sedan and weighed only 1,900 pounds. The 2015 Jetta weighs 3,000 pounds on a wheelbase of 104.4 inches and overall length of 183.3 inches. The added size gives it a roomy interior and a nice-sized trunk of almost 16 cubic feet. The driver’s side sun visor can’t be swung completely around to the side window because of obstruction by the overhead grip handle, and is left hanging at an awkward position.

Spiritual
Building good luck By Dana Holliday, psychic/medium
Good luck feels fun, joyous and happy. To build good luck, when good things happen, I like to thank the universe and ask for more. Like “Thanks, universe, I’ll take more of that please.” Or you can even be more specific, thanking for the free cup of coffee you received or the wonderful customer service and attention you got. The universe responds to all this. It’s important to recognize all the gifts, big or small we get from the universe. So if someone stops to help you, thank them and the universe. You can do this during the day and make a list at the end of the day of the gifts you received. This will build momentum and help your luck continue to flow and at a faster rate because you are now including it in your awareness and asking for it. The more you ask, the more you get. “The better it gets, the better it gets,” says Abraham Hicks. You can create a mantra/affirmation and repeat this whenever you get a chance. An example might be: “I am awash in financial abundance, I am open and willing to receive. I have an unlimited amount of cash flowing to me now. Money comes to me easily and effortlessly. I am thriving in abundance now.” It’s important to make it positive and in the now as if it is already happening or happened. This is an easy and fun way to get that
lucky energy flowing. You can write these down or just say them to yourself. I like to write it down so I can see it and it makes it real for me. Also you can call on your money angels/guides. Yes, that’s right, there are money angels. You can ask your angels or guides for assistance at any time. You can just ask for more luck and fortune to come your way or help with an increase in luck. You can also call on Archangel Barachiel. He helps in games of chance, happy surprises and good luck trinkets. He works with prosperity and abundance. So be sure to just invoke his name in any request for a windfall you have. You may want to say something like, “Barachiel, I call on you to assist /help me with this bet/opportunity today. Surround me with your light of luck and abundance, in gratitude, Dana.” This helps build on the momentum you had from before. You can use these at any time. It’s best if it’s on a consistent basis, but even just doing it on the spot will help your luck magnify. Dana Holliday, psychic/medium, is a dynamic and experienced psychic that can help you navigate through life, connect to your spirit guides and get clarity. A Ranch in Wyoming and Utah
W
e left our i n stigators of mayhem riding away from the shoot out between themselves and four lawmen, which left two of those lawmen dead on the morning of July 30, 1895. Fred George and Patrick Coughlin’s escapades had progressed from bad to worse to as bad as they could get. Before they mounted their weary horses to leave the scene, they took the guns and ammunition belts belonging to the deceased but took no other belongings. Before the day of July 30 was out, posses were forming. Sheriff Hardy from Salt Lake with four deputies took the train to Ogden where they met up with Sheriff Wright from Evanston. The six men arranged to have a special train take them from Ogden to Evanston in the evening. How quickly news could travel after the advent of the telegram! On the evening of July 30, a posse had left Evanston for the cabin on Duck Creek in the Wasatch Flats where the violent scene had taken place. Someone thought that they saw a movement at the cabin, and they fired hundreds of rounds of ammunition into the cabin before checking and finding the cabin empty. In Evanston a posse was gathered by Sheriff Harvey Hardy. They left the morning of the 31st to find the murderers. They combed the area west of the cabin, and other bands of searchers spread out around the area. Men were joining the posse including Harrington, who had been shot at by Coughlin in Crandall Canyon on July 28. The posse now consisted of about 25 men. Coughlin and George were spotted riding their pathetic horses on Chapman and Strong’s range (Neponset Land and Livestock). Officers felt that the horses could only last a few miles more and that a final bloody battle was eminent, but this was not to happen on that day. Meanwhile, general excitement in the area was gaining. The town of Almy, Wyo., near Evanston, added 40 men to the search. They were joined by 10 men from Whitney’s ranch and eight from Chapman and Strong’s Neponset ranch. It would probably be a good guess that George Galbraith, the strong scots foreman of Neponset, would have been among those who joined in. Close to 100 men were now

At this point, Coughlin and George probably made an error. Had they headed south into the Uinta Mountains, they would have been much harder to find. Instead they stayed in more open land to the north which they were more familiar with. They breakfasted in Huntsville, bought tobacco and other things, and then headed toward Ogden through Ogden canyon. On July 31 they approached Ogden from the east and rode up to a black-
smith shop owned W.A. Boatwright. In describing them later, Boatwright said one rode a sorrel horse and the other rode a dark brown one and they looked young and haggard and rough. Even though they were heavily armed and were looking around as if they were concerned about who might show up, he didn’t realize at the time that these were the fugitives about whom much fuss was being made. They asked him to put a shoe on one of the horses, but he told them he was too busy and sent them across the street to the establishment of another

farrier, L.C. Williamson. The two men, holding rifles and standing at the door, told Williamson that one of the horses had something in its foot. They asked him to clean it out and put on a new shoe. He did as they asked while one man watched from the door and another sat inside. They spun quite a yarn for Williamson as if they wanted to justify their presence in the area. Williamson was unable to help them with their request for the newspaper from the day before. Like Boatwright, he did not suspect who they were. After Coughlin
and George paid Williamson 40 cents for his blacksmithing services and headed north a few blocks and then south, it finally dawned on Boatwright just who they had been helping. He sent a message to town, but the message never reached the searching officers. At this point, since the shootout, no shots had been exchanged between the fugitives and the men who were chasing them, unless you count the hundreds of rounds shot into Palmer’s empty shack. The chase, however, was hardly over.

St. Patrick’s Day
In Honor of St. Patrick’s Day Irish immigrants who made Colorado history By Rosemary Fetter
Although the Scots-Irish (Protestant Irish from the north) began immigrating to the U.S. in Colonial days, the major exodus from Ireland took place during the potato famine from 1845 – 1851, striking again in 1879. Two-thirds of the country relocated during this period, primarily to North and South America. More than a million Irish refugees fled to the U.S. alone, forming the first mass migration in this country’s history. Many of these immigrants formed their own enclaves in the large cities, while others were more adventurous. The first Irish arrived in Colorado during the 1858-59 Gold Rush, finding work in the Nevadaville mines (near Central City) and Leadville. Others worked for the railroads. Many, called terriers, were hired to blast holes in the rock to build railroad tunnels. Some men opened saloons or joined the brewery business, settling in the Auraria neighborhood, where the college campus stands today. Following are just three of numerous Irish who made contributions that put Denver (and Colorado) on the map.

Thomas Fitzpatrick: An Irishman among the Indians Many Irish immigrants to America in the early 19th century fled poverty, religious oppression, and government tyranny. America represented freedom, dreams of success, and new beginnings. For one 17-year-old Irish immigrant, America gave him those opportunities and much more – an the untamed American West. Thomas Fitzpatrick was born in County Caven, Ireland, in 1799. Despite receiving a fairly good education, he ran away to sea and became a sailor. Fitzpatrick immigrated to America in 1816, jumped from a ship at New Orleans, and worked his way up the Mississippi River to St. Louis, where he eventually settled, for the time being. Fitzpatrick was off to an exciting start, to say the least. Yet Fitzpatrick, not realizing it at the time, soon signed up for the adventure of a life time. “Ascend the river Missouri to take part in the fur collecting business,” was the lead in an advertisement placed by William Ashley in the Feb. 13, 1822, issue of the Missouri Gazette and Public Adviser. The ad called for 100 enterprising men to join Ashley. Fitzpatrick, at the age of 23, jumped at the chance, and was joined by many other soon-to-be legendary scouts and trappers as Jedediah Smith, Mike Fink, William Sublette, Jim Bridger and Jim Beckwourth. Ashley’s new company, the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, was the first to invest in employees to trap the beaver for the everpopular Eastern fashions, rather than buying them from the Native Americans. Ashley did not pay his trappers a wage, but took a share of the earnings from the furs the trappers obtained, in exchange for transporting them to the Rocky Mountains. Ashley also supplied each man with traps and gunpowder, food and supplies. Accepting this arrangement, the men set off for their first expedition into the Rocky Mountain West. Led by Ashley, and his partner Andrew Henry, the trappers were sent off on the Missouri River in two groups, in May 1822. Fitzpatrick soon proved to be a natural leader. Reaching the junction of the Yellowstone River, the group

built a stockade, did some trapping, and by the fall of 1822, the profits were high when they returned to St. Louis. Fitzpatrick and his party, more than 70 strong, returned to the West, where on May 30, 1823, the group were attacked by several bands of Arikara Indians. Twelve of Ashley’s men were killed and the rest were forced to retreat. Stranded in the Wind River Valley, Jedediah Smith managed to get away under cover of darkness and bring back reinforcements, thus the discovery of South Pass through the rugged Rocky Mountain range. For several years Fitzpatrick worked the rivers and creeks of the Rockies along with other noted trappers of the day. By 1830, Fitzpatrick, along with Jim Bridger, Milton Sublette, Henry Fraeb and Jean Gervais, purchased the Rocky Mountain Fur Company from his good friend, Jedediah Smith, who had purchased it from William Ashley. Life as a mountain man was dangerous. Fitzpatrick, like many
Thomas Fitzpatrick other famous mountain men, had several near-death episodes. Early on, perhaps during the fight with the Arikara in 1823, he had gained the nickname “Broken Hand,” when his left hand became severely damaged from an accidental gunshot. In July 1832, while en route to the yearly mountain man rendezvous, a harrowing encounter with
a large number of Gros Ventres, near Pierre’s Hole, left Fitzpatrick barely alive. It was a long recovery, and when he did recover, his hair was completely gray, earning him the nickname of “White Hair” by the Indians. Fitzpatrick’s travels led him all over what would become Colorado Territory. In 1834, on his way to the annual mountain man rendezvous, Fitzpatrick made his first visit to Bent’s Fort. Here, he learned the rendezvous had been canceled, so he spent his time in conversation and relaxation with the Bent family and the Cheyenne Indians. He and Yellow Wolf, the respected chief and friend of the Bents, became great friends. Fitzpatrick would return many times to Bent’s Fort during his travels and adventures. Fitzpatrick trapped on the Green River in the fall of 1834, where he was attacked and robbed by the Crow Indians. He made Fort William his base along the Laramie River for the next few years, trading with the Sioux until early 1836, when he sold his trapping business

to the American Fur Company. For the next few years, Fitzpatrick hired out to the AFC, and also hired on as a guide to parties into or across the Rockies. In 1841, he guided a wagon train from Missouri to Oregon, and a second party later that year from Fort Laramie to Fort Hall, which involved another near-death encounter with the Pawnee. In 1843, Fitzpatrick was the chief guide for John C. Fremont’s second westward expedition. For the next 18 months he led the “Pathfinder” to California and north to Oregon. Returning east, Fitzpatrick and Fremont arrived at Bent’s Fort in early 1844. Later that same year, Fitzpatrick guided Stephen Watts Kearny and his Army of the West to the fort, where the army prepared for the war with Mexico. The following year, Fitzpatrick led Kearny’s army south of Santa Fe until the command met Kit Carson at Socorro, New Mexico. From there, Carson took over as guide and Fitzpatrick took Carson’s dispatches from Fremont to Washington, D.C. At the nation’s capitol, Fitzpatrick received the appointment as the first Indian Agent for the Upper Platte and Arkansas Rivers. Fitzpatrick’s jurisdiction was from the Laramie River south to the Arkansas River and east to Leavenworth, where on his recommendation, the first military post on the western plains was constructed. As Indian Agent, in 1847, Fitzpatrick counseled with the Southern Cheyenne at Bent’s Fort, where he made Bent’s Fort his home. Here, he had an office set up where he conducted his business with the local Indians as well as messages received from the government. Fitzpatrick was instrumental in organizing the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851, a peaceful agreement with the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Shoshone and Sioux tribes. In 1854, while in Washington D.C. on official business, Fitzpatrick contracted pneumonia and died very suddenly. He left behind his French-Indian wife and two daughters; he was 55 years of age. He is buried in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Trusted by the Indians, depended upon by the trappers and mountain men, Fitzpatrick was influential in the opening of the West. This Irishmen deserves great respect in the history Colorado and the American West.

watch a Tweety and Sylvester marathon. In episode after episode, the original Sylvester attempted to capture sweet, innocent Tweety, but Tweety always escaped, often thanks to his own cleverness. Other times, he was rescued by his loyal bodyguard, Hector the bulldog, or his owner and protector, the umbrellawielding Granny. That’s how it is at our house too. Kitty is cuter than Sylvester, but he’s just as persistent. Mr. Tweeters sings cheerfully until the cat sneaks into the guest room. There is no Hector, so I’m left to defend Tweeters. There’s not a cat in sight. I open the door just wide enough to slip through, and suddenly Kitty appears out of nowhere, heading my way. Going Green
Be green – save our bees
Did you know it takes 12 bees a lifetime to produce one teaspoon of honey? Bees do a lot more than just produce honey, however. We rely on them to pollinate food crops and plants to keep our ecosystems and economy healthy. Throughout the world, bees are suffering from a variety of misfortunes that are causing whole hives to die off, while others are not thriving. For example, in the winter of 2013-2014, one-quarter of honeybee colonies in the United States died. Even though you may be frightened of bees because of their stings, we must all learn to understand that we need bees to maintain our food supplies. Bees are responsible for pollinating one-fifth of the world’s crops, upon which both humans and livestock depend. If these hard-working insects die off, the world could suffer enormous food shortages. Without bees, many plants that provide food could go extinct because all flowering plants reproduce through pollination, and most pollination is accomplished by bees. I love to watch how bees work to make honey behind a protective flat glass case at Westminster’s Butterfly Pavilion. Here you can view hundreds of busy bees going in and out of a wall opening as they collect pollen and nectar from plants around the building to build their combs in the summer. These bee colonies look something like Honeycomb cereal. While no single cause has been isolated, how we manage our beekeeping and modern agricultural practices may be the most important means of bringing back our honeybee populations. Some of the apparent causes include the use of harmful pesticides by commercial farmers and home gardeners, as well as viruses, mites, and other ailments that attack our honeybees. Today disappearing green spaces and the loss of their natural habitats are making life difficult for bees. In the early days of the

United States, and still in much of the rest of the world, houses were not surrounded by lawns, but instead gardens full of fruit trees, flowers, vegetables and herbs. Since many families grew all their own food, the front and back of a house might be surrounded with as many as a hundred different kinds of plants and trees. These ecosystems kept our bees busy and healthy. In Colorado, March and April are good times to plant earlyflowering spring bulbs, so that the bees have food after the winter months. Crocuses and snowdrops are a good choice. Daffodils and tulips are great too. Just look out for varieties with open flowers that bees can easily feed from. By providing even a few flowering native plants to be used by these hard-working insects for food, you will be playing a part in keeping the ecosystem and the food supply healthy for families. Also start planning what vegetables and herbs you want to grow this year in your garden, window box or kitchen windowsill. Remember not to use pesticides or artificial fertilizers on the plants you are growing to support the bees. Instead of fertilizers you buy in the grocery store, consider composting instead. Not only does compost generate healthier soil, but composting also keeps your kitchen and outdoor waste out of the landfills. Also put out a bowl of fresh distilled or filtered water every day for the bees. They need water just like any other living things. Whether you have a large lawn, or just an apartment with a single windowsill, you can support your local bees with very little fuss or danger. Since bees are pretty undemanding, as long as you grow flowering plants that are native to your region, you will be supporting the bees. Even if you have only a single plant growing on your windowsill, you will be helping support honeybees, the pollinators necessary for plants to produce food.
