To counter the outrage, administration officials and even Gov. Waite, began sprinkling unfavorable rumors as to the character of Sadie Likens. Likens actually sued for defamation of character. The Populist Party quickly lost favor with the Colorado voters and Waite was not reelected. In 1895, Sadie’s job as police matron was returned to her. Later, Sadie served as superintendent for the State Home and Industrial School for Girls, a reformatory

She lent her help, when able to the Florence Crittenton social agency in 1897, where she provided aid to unwed pregnant women. Two years later, in 1899, Sadie became a matron of the county hospital where she used her skills to care for patients from all walks of life. During World War I, Sadie, now well into her seventies, volunteered with the American Legion, which supported and provided aid for returning soldiers. On July 30, 1920, Sadie died after suffering a long illness. Her loss was

deeply felt among the many Denver citizens she had helped and befriended over the years. Denver war veterans hailed her as “the one Coloradan who has given the most unselfish service to her country.” Shortly after her death, people rallied together to lobby the City of Denver to provide a memorial in her honor. The City of Denver obliged by erecting a drinking fountain and plaque in Denver’s Civic Park, across from the State Capitol building. Sadie, who became the first female on Denver’s police force, contributed so much more in the way of humanity and decent human kindness.

n Aug. 2, 1895, Fred George and Patrick Coughlin were still at liberty. In Salt Lake City the Deseret Evening News wished “more resolute representatives of the law had followed them over their circuitous and chequered course.” The News claimed that © Anna Lee Ames Frohlich only half dozen searchers were still trying to follow the trail. They surmised the hunted were not very far away and had probably been passed numerous times since the confrontation at City Creek on Aug. 1. Approaches to the city and the homes of George’s Salt Lake relatives were being guarded, but the renegades were not seen. “The disappearance last evening was as complete as though the earth had yawned in some volcanic disturbance and took the young offenders in …” The newspaper was correct about the criminals not being very far off. Coughlin and George spent the nights of the first and second quietly on the eastern outskirts of Salt Lake City at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery and at Jack Gilman’s ranch. On the third night, they returned to Murray, the first place they had stolen a horse on July 14 shortly after the strawberry incident. This time in Murray, they stole two horses that had been tied to the hitching rail in front of the Union Pacific Saloon. The two young men from Taylorsville whose horses were stolen did not report this to Salt Lake officers until the afternoon of Aug. 4. This was the first concrete clue as to the whereabouts of the slippery twosome and it gave rise to more stories of “sightings” that led to numerous “wild goose chases.” Some may have been deliberate hoaxes by people who wanted to help Coughlin and George to make their escape. It was thought that they may receiving help, especially food, from young men who were impressed by their daring escapades and would have liked to join them. Coughlin and George were considered heroes by these misguided young men. Posses had disbanded after the City Creek affair thinking that there

was no chance of catching their illusive prey, but they started to regather once word started coming in about their location. The posse members were wary however because they did not figure that Patsy and Fred, heavily armed as they were, were worth dying over. The boys last meal as free men took place on the evening of Aug. 4. On the way to Grantsville they stopped at Rue Barre’s cabin near the Third Term mine. They rode up on their horses around dusk and asked Barre for some bread and butter. Barre graciously offered, “Boys, if you will wait awhile you may have supper with us.” At first he had no suspicions about them, but in a short time the truth crept up on him. Other men at the mining camp were suspicious as well but felt it prudent not to say or do anything. The armed fugitives sat at the dinner table cautiously facing the door. As soon as Coughlin and George had finished their dinner and had ridden off, the miners climbed on their horses and made haste to notify the authorities. Our bone weary travelers bedded down for the night in South Willow canyon just three miles south of the mine where they had dined. Their intention was to rise early and head

for Deep Creek country, but, tired as they were, they overslept. As a matter of fact, it had been daylight for some time when one of the officers in the Grantsville posse spied a horse in the brush. Marshall Meacham and Richard Rydalch were riding a bit ahead and were the first to see the horse. While Rydalch went back to alert the others, Meacham set about making noises to make it appear that a large force of men were with him. The posse stationed men above and below where the horse was seen and on the sparsely covered slopes to either side. Escape without being seen was now impossible for the fugitives. One of the officers spied a man in the brush. The posse had no doubts that this was on of the thieves. They started to close in while firing a few shots to drive the men out. Coughlin appeared and was ordered to put his hands up. He did this quite willingly while crying out, “Don’t shoot! Don’t shoot!” Rydalch, Barres and Gus Sandberg moved in immediately. Coughlin asked for assurance that he was safe with them. He declared, “This is the first time I have had an opportunity to surrender like a man. Everywhere else the officers have tried to shoot us down like dogs.” He said the officers had ap-

He and George were afraid to come out least they be shot through. Coughlin was handcuffed and left in the charge of Sandberg while the others went looking for George. He told Sandberg that he had intended to surrender as soon as he heard the officers. The game of cat and mouse was drawing to a close.

Trail’s End

Ouray’s ballplayer

Smoky Joe Wood

‘Nobody Threw the Ball Harder’ In the 1890s, the silvery San Juans were filled with miners who lived in towns with strong community ties. Towns such as Silverton, Telluride and Ouray boasted churches, schools and ball fields. America’s favorite pastime was not just the rage of an era, it was a passion of the players and the fans. One of those fans was 10-year-old Joe Wood. The youngster would do anything he could to get to the local baseball field. He cut corners on home chores and schoolwork. After his daily chore of setting type for his father’s newspaper, he would head off to the ball field. Wood became the mascot, batboy and eventually a player for his hometown team in Ouray. By age 18, Wood became a professional ball player and later, a legend in the sport. Wood was born Howard Ellsworth Wood in Kansas City on Oct. 25, 1889, the second son of John and Rebecca Wood. Howard and his older brother Harley were both given nicknames at a young age. Howard became Joe and Harley became Pete. Joe loved baseball and played endlessly on empty fields with the neighbor boys. John Wood, a teacher, lawyer and newspaper publisher, was struck with gold fever. After several excursions to Alaska and California, John Wood eventually moved his family to the San Juans of Colorado. In 1897, the Wood family traveled by covered wagon to Colorado, settling in Ouray. During the long trip, Joe kept his ball glove on the front seat of the wagon as they traveled across the flats of western Kansas and over the mountains of Colorado. When Joe finally made the Ouray team, he had already honed his skills as a ball player. Those skills were enhanced by the altitude. These mountain ball players took to the fields at elevations that would shock the east coast teams. At the ball fields of Ouray, at 7,800 feet, Telluride at 8,500 feet, and Silverton at 9,302 feet, balls flew far in the light air. It was at Ouray that Joe cracked the bat that made the ball soar, and his throw would smack harder at lower altitudes, where it was later said, “No one threw harder than Smoky Joe Wood.”

Colorado baseball players in the 1880s. John Wood arranged a try-out for his son with the newly formed team, the Hutchinson, Kansas, Salt Packers, of the Western Baseball Association. The 16-year-old pitched well enough to earn $20 to finish out the 1906 season. Joe Wood was signed to a $90 contract for the 1907 season, becoming one of the youngest professional ball players to ever play the game. From his first step to the mound, Joe seemed to make history. “Manager Doc Andrews says Joe Wood Can Deliver the Goods.” It was an unusual cold and windy

May day when Joe pitched his first shut-out game, bringing his team a 5-0 win over Wichita. Joe pitched smartly and also switched off to play second base, shortstop, or left field. During the last day of the season, Joe pitched a double header against Springfield, and hit two home runs, finishing his career with the team with an 18-11 record, and struck out 224 batters. For the 1908 baseball season, Joe, signed a contract with the Kansas City Blues, for $250. It wasn’t long before Joe’s abilities and personality endeared him to the Kansas City fans, as well as

the sports writers. The Kansas City Post wrote, “Joe Wood, the phenomenon from Hutchinson, can pitch some, play second some, cover short some, and go some at various other stations.” By mid-season, Joe’s stats were not good and he was traded to the Boston Red Sox. The team needed a young talent to follow their star pitcher, the great Cy Young. On Aug. 24, 1908, Joe Wood, at age 18, made his starting debut as pitcher for the Boston Red Sox against the Chicago White Sox. It wasn’t a great game, and while the Kansas reporters were

kind to Joe, the Boston reporters were not. So started a four-year love-hate relationship. Paul Shannon, sports writer for the Boston Post, wrote, “Wood has nice curves and a pretty drop ball but has got to learn that a pitcher who uses nothing but curves is not destined for a lengthy stay in the big leagues.” This same reporter would later give Joe Wood the nickname “Smoky Joe” during the 1911 season. That was the breakout season for both Joe and the Boston Red Sox. Joe pitched in 44 games, won 23 games, compiled an E.R.A. of 2.02, threw a nohitter against St. Louis, and struck out 15 batters in one game. That was the game that made “Smoky Joe Wood.” Ty Cobb remarked, “A lot of fellows in my time shortened up on the bat when they had to--that’s what the boys should try against this good pitcher.” For Joe, Cobb was an inspirational figure and the two had the occasion to take the field together, making history in 1911, which was the inaugural year of baseball’s first All Star Team. Originally played as a benefit game, it turned into a traditional event acknowledging the great players of the game. The 1911 players included Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Joe Wood’s team roommate for 15 years, Frank “Homerun” Baker, and pitchers Walter Johnson and Joe Wood. Baseball historians consider it the greatest single team ever gathered on the field. The year 1912 was exceptional for Smoky Joe, the Red Sox, and American baseball. Boston’s baseball season opened in the newly built Fenway Park. With the new era, it was Smoky Joe Wood’s best season, winning 34 of 39 games. Smoky Joe completed 35 out of 38 starting games, becoming the youngest pitcher in the American League to do so. The winning season earned the Boston Red Sox entry to the World Series, which most historians consider the “greatest World Series of all time.” In the eight game series, it was Wood who pitched against the New York Giants in the final tie-breaking game, winning a 3-2 victory and the World Series title. He stayed with the Red Sox for three years, seeing Babe Ruth join the team in 1915. Smoky Joe completed his career with the Cleveland Indians. In 1920 they won the World Series. He became the second player ever in baseball history, the first being Babe Ruth, to be a starting pitcher in one World Series and a starting position player in another.

Granted with all the expenses and deductions you may have – and have good records of, right? – you may not have to remit it all, but better to have it ready to send than to be scrounging under to sofa for funds come tax time. One last thing – you might file a schedule C as a professional gambler and because the amount of income doesn’t meet IRS standards (whatever they are), they may disallow that status for your gambling activities. At that point, you may deduct expenses and losses only to the extent of your winnings. Any further deductions/losses will not be allowed against other income you may have. In that case, you’ve gone about as far as you can go protecting your income from the tax man. It all helps – as long as you have good records! And – you rely on professional advice (not me). And – you keep thinking about poker.

disallow something – OK, fine. The primary key here is - be sure to file your taxes every year. The IRS is okay with amending a return should the need arise, but they lose their sense of humor (?) if one has not filed for a year…or two…or more. The second key is – keep excruciatingly complete records. A handwritten logbook is an acceptable record; it has been deemed a diary of sorts. At month’s end I enter that month’s data into an electronic filing/accounting system; at the end of the year I print out a report at the click of a mouse. But I KEEP the handwritten logbook as backup to the electronic data. A third key is to keep every receipt you get for anything poker related. I put mine in a separate envelope within a book – obtainable at any office supply store – where each subject for which I need to keep receipts is kept. The last thing to remember in all this is – if you note you are having a winning season,

I keep a separate logbook for each as it helps in differentiating from where and when my gaming income comes. I also keep a record of all the side expenses related to my poker playing: Mileage to & from the casino is deductible as is hotel, transportation (airfare, taxi, rental car, etc.), part of your meals, books & magazine subscriptions (you do read about and research poker, don’t you?), anything related to one’s gaming professionalism can be a deduction! Caveat (meaning WARNING) – I am not a professional accountant or attorney of gaming law, PLEASE consult your own expert before relying on advice given here. I’m merely passing on what I’ve been able to do: I’ve passed two IRS audits as such, having to pony up less than $100 in extra taxes one time. They just had to
